My God, what a freakish singer. I am not sure I have ever been quite this impressed by the combination of skills in a contemporary setting. I hope you all enjoyed it and learned something too!

Thank you for this analysis. I studied voice with Todd Duncan, (picked by Gershwin to create the role of Porgy in "Porgy and Bess") from the Curtis Institute of Music and he would have LOVED Dimash! I think/predict Dimash is/will lead(ing) the way to a new level for music...

the baritone is Sundet Baigozhin, and he is also from Kazakshtan. What I have understood this is from a competition in Russian tv, that Sundet was in and he asked Dimash to duet with him. Sundet Baigozhin is professional and awarded opera-singer as you can tell :) happy you enjoyed it Zach!

because most vocal coach think they are the best singers just listen to them they all mention what they do how they do it, so that tell me they can't say anyone is better then them. I don't listen to vocal coach any more on Dimash I'll wait for the Scientist to Analysis Dimash because they are the ones that will tell us how incredible Dimash is.

Thank you, Zach! Since discovering Dimash, I've fallen in love music and singing all over again, I've watched and listened to a lot of vocal teachers to learn how he does what he does...I appreciate your breakdown, and even humility in admitting you wouldn't know how to teach the melisma he does at the end to a student. That makes me feel like we're all on the same page and we can just appreciate the joy and wonder he channels with this voice - cheers!

Great analysis. I think you picked the right performance if you are only going to look at one as he demonstrates much of what he can do well and does so tastefully within the context of the musical experience. The second to last section with the glottal stops is a fragment of a Yakutsk folk song found by his arranger and longtime friend, though that singing style is also common to Kazakhs who call it 'komeymen aytu'. (Something similar is also used in parts of the Middle East). He has more vocal technique up his sleeve than you saw here as he has trained in multiple Western and Asian traditions. He evidently enjoys pickup new styles ones so there is a certain element of suspense wondering what he'll toss in next.

Zach, I think I have a hypothesis on your pondering about his significant breath management in 3 words--"inspiratory hold position". Remember it from your training? Where a singer maintains the position for as long as is both possible and comfortable, maintaining a raised sternum (but not raised shoulders or clavicle), avoiding displacement of the chest (or collapse of the ribcage), and allowing the muscles of the lateral abdominal wall to stay close to the position of INHALATION? This, coupled with maximum compression of the vocal folds (providing greatly suppressed exhalation!) in his "head voice" pharyngeal configuration, allows that bright, twangy timbre (and he trained all through puberty, at the Kazach Institute of Music, to use it) that's so economical in breath expenditure. Unlike us "normal" humans, he's also bypassing the normal appagia most of us flip/slip into, at the upper limit of chest/head voice, forcing falsetto--he's trained to bridge the break (unless he wants to slip seamlessly into falsetto, as a musicality tool) and uses what's basically a "controlled scream" in a remarkably accurate, musical way. Result: SIX OCTAVES, with his last (known) note (the Gakku concert's "Unforgettable Day" D8) being beyond the piano keyboard--it's becoming known as the "dolphin note". Now THAT'S a whistle!

Zach, your analysis is so welcome! Dimash's artistry hits many of us on an emotional level, but some of us really relish understanding the virtuosity (is that a word?) of his technique, too, so that we can love it with our minds as well. I'm always watching for new skills, or technique if you will, because he has shown, over time, that he usually surprises us, and it's often very subtle. Recently, a new song included--for lack of a name more suited to the genre--trills. But they were woven in so subtly that I had to listen several times to be sure that's what I was hearing. There is another new skill I've heard once, and I'll be watching to see if it really is in the professional recording of the song. Heady stuff, I tell ya! Thank you for your unique perspective.

  • @Roman-yt8up
    @Roman-yt8up 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Hello! Thank you so much for this amazing professional in-depth analysis!
I've been extremely impressed by him as well, literally since I for the very first time heard him sing (which was actually Sinful Passion).
I became interested in that person, and I read quite a lot of articles, and even watched Kazakh documentaries about him. :-D i.a. I found out about him the following:
It was, in fact, confirmed by a doctor that he has a physiological anomaly: He was born with unusually long vocal chords. Of course, he has trained his voice since age 5 and has further expanded his range, but I was said (- contrarily to you, I'm, of course, not a voice teacher -) that with "normal" vocal chords you wouldn't be able to reach such a range anyway, no matter how long and hard you train.
He already had absolute hearing with age 5.
When he went though puberty, his natural voice lowered, but he never lost the high pitch he had as a child.
His mother said in an interview that he was already born with really good lung volume, but he has further expanded it, mainly by regular swim training (including swimming underwater) since early childhood.
As a teenager, he sang in a choir led by university professors of music. However, he was the main tenor soloist in the boys choir and, because they had lacked a really skilled soprano soloist in the girls choirs, he actually did that as well. XD So he was a soloist in the boys choir but also a soloist in the girls choir as a soprano. XD
And there's another thing I read: I don't know how I should evaluate that information, but I found it quite interesting: One of his voice teachers was once was interviewed, and according to him, Dimash only very rarely uses falsetto.

We talk and occasionally sing, but Dimash sings and talks occasionally. He practices about 3 hours per day, and in fan vids you see him break out into song or vocalise often. He started actual training at an academy at 5 years in piano and singing, and slept with cassettes and played with them and his player as a younger child. He says if you cut him, he will bleed music.
He graduated with a degree in classical and jazz, went on to a Masters Degree in Musical Composition, and is studying for a Doctorate in something else.
He was offered a career in Kazakh Opera, but wanted to follow his own dreams of mixing many styles which he has pretty well mastered as you have seen, and if you look at his latest 3 songs at Sochi New Wave competition/concert where he was on the judging panel, he performed them with notable pianist, singer, composer, music and concert producer, who has raised up many excellent stars, and is a Russian self made multi billionaire who has made himself available to Dimash both as a mature friend and mutual benefactor of creating the most wonderful performances for them both. These three songs, Stranger, Fly Away, and Ave Maria make up a story if you have eyes to see and ears to hear. In Stranger he arrives through a portal from the Holy City on a mission, and is aware that he may have been here before, and wonders how he will cope. In Fly Away ( this may not be an Igor Krutoy song) he has struck some disappointments and has to assert his dominance. And in Ave Maria (vocalise version by Igor), he has succeeded in finishing his mission and is ascending back up through the various heavenly dimensions and unearthly battles to get back home. This is my interpretation!!, assuming he is a combo human/Angel that serves the heavenly destiny.

Hello Zach! I just checked out your channel and you most probably give the most detailed vocal analyses I've ever seen on YT. So, massive respect and also thank you for that.
Because you asked how he could to that long vocal on one breath in the end...
I don't know, I guess it's a mixture of the following: He has excellent breath management, he uses very little air, and he also seems to have a really good lung capacity.
He often sustains notes for 20 seconds or longer, that's nothing special for him and no problem at all. He sometimes also does a melisma right after a long, sustained note, on the same breath... BUT what he did here... I long, sustained note in that range, with that much power, plus a MASSIVE run added, not only massive with respect to its duration but also with respect to the pitch variation, with one breath, for 23 seconds, is still on another level. This is even way more difficult, also for him.
You can hear that he basically more or less runs out of air in the end of it, the volume just drops, 2 seconds or so before he had completed the run.
I'm pretty sure that this was not intentional and not how he had planned it. I think he wasn't able to pull it off in that live situation exactly as he had actually planned to. He usually always ends a long vocal with the same power and same volume (and often with a little cry in the end). It still was PHENOMENAL (!!!) of course, and almost unbelievable. But it shows that it didn't exaaactly work out as planned (it worked out to almost a 100% but not a full 100%), and that he obviously really went to his limits with that vocal. ..which is something he usually never does, everything he does usually seems totally easy for him.
...and you can even see/hear that when he started to talk afterwards, which was almost a minute later... he was still a little out of breath, he was brething much more often than usual, and also more heavily than usual... So it was difficult even for someone like him.
I guess he just wanted to pull off sth extra special for this special event. (And he did.) However, I watched a looot of performanced of him in the last few months, and, even though this is not really the genre I prefer, I've most probably never (!) seen a vocalist that impressed me that much.
...Hmm or you know what...? Replace the "most probably" with definitely. ;) There's really no other name that comes to my mind right now... He really is phenomenal. Not everyone is a fan of such a "show off" style (btw, he doesn't do it in all of his songs, but in a lot of them), but I personally totally enjoy it.

I'm quite selective with TH-cam vocal teachers, as most videos are a blend of partial analysis and first time reactions, or pretty much reaction. He's my favourite singer and I want to understand him better, I learned a lot because of him. Very informative and educational video, especially for an amateur singer.

I think that Dimash’s range will be as great due to the training he has maintained since he was 5. Even during the teens years when his voice was changing, he kept singing, which, from what I have heard, most western institutions advise against doing.
In a normal anatomy and physiology setting. As we age the body in general loses a huge range of motion. We are not as flexible as we were when we were children. However those that are actively maintaining that range with stretch exercises don’t lose it.
So I think the fact that Dimash has never broken his training regimens will aid his maintenance of the great range that he has.

Thanks for this highly informative video :) Dimash really needs more analysis like this, and not those endless, pointless react videos.
Also it's interesting that you defined him as tenor (well, or "more-tenor-than-not"), which I also inclined to think. One thing I noticed (not sure I'm correct at that) is that his voice isn't really going much lower than sometimes accessible by tenors ~F2 without things like vocal fry or whatever "alien" tricks he might be using. But in clear chest voice it seems kinda breathy and quiet around middle 2 octave already, like for most people it kind of "won't go much lower than this" sound. Which is not to say it's any less impressive, but just curious at where the bottom of that insane voice might be, if the top is all but unlimited. Sorry, I'm not much of a professional in music theory and even less familiar with english version of it, I hope that makes any sense.
Anyway, it was interesting to watch, thanks!

Love watching your analysis videos. It is like case studies one after another with some concepts emphasized over time but at a nice pace. Not for this one but for other videos I really appreciate that you pointing out what should not be done, e.g., singing with too much air. To me, sometimes it is more informative when I know both what should and should not be done for singing. Great jobs.

Thank you for your informative analysis. Dimash is an awesome, well trained and experienced performer. If you feel so inclined, I would be interested in your take on Dimash newest performance, "Love is a Dream"; performed recently in Russia. "Love is a Dream" it is a composition by Igor Krutoy, who accompanies Dimash on piano, in the performance.

Hi there. Great reaction from you. You should see the live performance of this in his Moscow concert last March 2019. His voice is more mature. And yes, his agility & breath control is just awesome.

Excellent discussion and commentary!!!! Love the physiological dissection! I don’t claim to know exactly how whistle notes are produced, but having trained as a soprano in my youth, here’s my two cents. So as we move up the scale to ally, we move the placement of our resonance from the malar sinuses to the frontal sinuses and finally up to the sphenoid sinuses. You can direct your air flow straight, but it’s a bit hard because if all the structures in the way and the sound comes out a bit muddy. The better way, for a crystal clear tone, is to curve the air flow up and backwards to behind the ears then curve back to the central focal point if the sphenoid sinuses, which can be imagined to be the intersection of the three planes in the center of the head. This technique can be used for high notes up to the 6th octave maybe, depending on the person’s vocal cords. But for the D8 that Dimash threw in just to puzzle us in his live performance of Unforgettable Day at the Gakku concert, ... well I’m just as befuddled as you are... no idea how that is even possible...😯😯😯
