This was SUPER helpful! I love the idea of doing more "glossary " type videos where you explain what a scent is. It's so so helpful, especially for newbies
I completely agree with your observations! Yes! Salty, woody for sure :-) I work with raw Ambroxan everyday. It's a fascinating materials. Why? because it has 2 main - seemingly contradictory facets. It is BOTH dry and aquatic. First, 1). Ambroxan is light woody, bone dry clean, white driftwood you might find on a beach. Very clean. 2). Ambroxan also smells of ocean, salt water and the tiniest bit of sea weed. This makes sense because ambroxan is a central molecule within Ambergris. Ambroxan is a warm material. It also a type of "white musk," or woody-amber white musk type material. It doesn"t change character while it dries and it lasts for days. You can think of white musks as "white noise," a wall of solid, pleasant sound...in the background. Ambroxan is not as warm as real Ambergris, but it is warm. So Ambroxan is both bone dry woody, and salty atmospheric. The salty atmospheric facet of Ambroxan makes it applicable to men's aquatic fragrances, aqua-colognes. Perfumers use Ambroxan in nearly any kind of perfume... but especially woody fragrances. Ambroxan brings warmth, structure, strength and diffusion to a wood perfume without changing the characteristic of other elements within a perfume. Again, it is 90% transparent, but its effects are felt. It make a fragrance richer, last longer and more powerful. I don't know of any commercial perfume that uses real ambergris. Many niche perfumes, like myself do, but its rarely if ever used in commercial perfumery.
When I was in undergrad, my advisor was someone who was passionate about and used to work in the fragrance industry. He let me smell real ambergris. Unfortunately, I was only able to smell it for a few seconds and I've been anosmic to it ever since. I did like the smell. I can still smell ambroxan.
Diptyque's recent release 'L'eau Papier' is also so good. Opens really similar to JHAG Not a Perfume/Glossier You but I preferred it more because it has some rice/sesame notes to it which makes it warmer and more cozy when it dries down.
Large quantity of very pure ambroxan is used in Baccarat Rouge 540, it is definitely not ambergris there, that is exactly why people get anosmia after using it for longer time.
Yes this glossary treatment for notes is a great idea!!! I´d be very interested in similar treatment for others like tobacco, vetiver, cardamon, myrrh, amber, incense, vanilla, cacao. Synthetic ones as well, e.g. Iso E Super. I'd like to have a large collection not of perfumes but of small samples of the actual natural notes themselves: some cedar wood, some cypress, some myrrh, amber, lavender, patchouli, iris, vetiver, moss, musk etc. etc. etc. About Ambroxin, I do like the smell of Sauvage EDT. First impression from this fragance for me was that it immediately reminded me of the smell of some melon mojitos (drinks). Sauvage EDT I agree is kind of upfront and agressive, but fewer/distant sprays should be able to tone that down to everyone's taste.
The best reviewer on TH-cam ! Sebastian we trust your opinion. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Keep your good work with this passion about perfumes.
I agree Ambroxan is coarse. Possibly it can get smoothed out by other notes temporarily, but when it is the primary note it has a bite to it. Perhaps this is more obvious to me because of the earlier, smoother notes in my current fragrance ( Sheikh al Shuyukh luxe edition) that contrast with it when it kicks in later as a base note. Thank you so much for this video, it's been remarkably informative on the subject. Cheers :)
Yes glossary!!! And I’d like to hear your opinion on milk & cream notes. A lot of frag snobs don’t prefer it, but your perspective is pretty well-rounded. More please 🙏🏽
This video was SOOOO helpful! You just helped me figure out what the note was in all of my favorite fragrances, that drives me wild. The scent that led me to you was “Level 13” by Brown Sugar Babe. I realized that the same “thing” I loved in it, was also in “Valaya” by PDM. Then, your scent description confirmed it. Thank you! Please keep the glossary videos coming.
Please we need more of these glossary videos. Excellent content. Just one thing to add, one reviwer on TH-cam (he is a perfumers as well) was talking about BR540 and he said that it uses Ambroxan and not real Ambrigries. 🙄
@@gbradley5264 G Bradley Nobody here is insisting on ambergris. What makes me upset is when the company market the perfume to include real ambergris when it is NOT. They lie to your face so they could jack up the prices. However, I'm not insisting to have it and I don't mind wearing a perfume that uses any other ambergris substitute. BUT DON'T LIE ABOUT IT!

But now that I find I like better molecule 1 and Juliette has a gun. You smells much sweeter. I’d like to know more about the powdery scent of iris as well. Think that would make a great video!
What a great video!!! Love juliette has a gun not a perfume. I was asked enormous time by others what is it that I'm wearing. Also got Another 13 sample and it is gourgers. For me it smells like not a perfume "on steroids". I intend to get a full bottle in the future. In general I do enjoy this clean scents with the saltiness. It would be great idea to go on with other ingredients videos. Love your content!
Tried Juliette has Gun not a perfume, was not surprised when I couldn't smell it on my skin but after a few minutes the scent came out and I was able to smell it. Give it some time!
Great explanation video, and great idea for a series! I personally do not enjoy the ambroxan centered fragrances. They end up all smelling the same after a few hours, and it comes across to me as a very synthetic, harsh, generic scent.
I'm glad I came across your video. Super interesting and informative. I have been wearing Another 13 for about a year now and I have never received so many compliments on my cologne before. I thought maybe I was using too much of it at once. I've noticed that it can be a little scarce to find Another 13, so I am always on the lookout for it so that I'm never out of it. And now I understand why I enjoy Sauvage as well. Thank you for sharing!
I learnt that today. Never figured out why I don't like sauvage. Then I bought mont blanc explorer... well. Now I have 300 ml of pure ambroxan which I can barely use.
I KNOW RIGHT?? With my virgin nose, I thought Aventus, Sauvage and Prada Luna Rossa Carbon were all the same. I know it’s because of the Ambroxan, but I didn’t know any of this before.
Very nice reviews. I adore ambroxan. When I first smelled Not a Perfume, for me it was a whole new experience and with a time I started to appreciate more subtle fragrances
Love to see your take on Iso E Super too. That one makes me smell stinky when mixed with my sweat. So I'd always know if a fragrance contains Iso E Super in it as a result of my stinky-ness lol.
It's so interesting what you explain about being anosmic and that actually changing. I could never smell Dolce and Gabbana Light Blue, it literally smelled like nothing to me, water! lol Then after years went by I worked selling fragrance at Sephora and I would smell it again and again and then could finally smell it and appreciate it so much!
I like ambroxan, reminds me of new clothing, and being at the dry cleaners. Great for adding depth to most scents by layering. Try it with Dior Sport, Terre de Hermes, Artisan Pure. Thanks Sebastian, looking forward to the next video!
This was an interesting video of one of my favorite notes! Thank you so much! I would love to see more of these types of vids especially with ISO E super. Thanks again and as always stay clean my brotha!
Hello Sebastian, your reviews are always Precieux. I like very much ambroxan, cause I love Amber, amber gris, salty and smooth woody notes. Thank you to share with us. Your passion it's my passion too....❤️
How can we get Ambroxan out of perfume? Can we distill it or crystallize it or oxidize it out of perfume to salvage the bottle so that it's wearable without being noxious?
I am in loveeeeee with JHAG Not a Perfume Superdose, I have bought two additional bottles.😍 I am wearing it today layered with Lipstick Fever! I want D.S. & DURGA - I DON’T KNOW WHAT
I find it SUPER interesting that someone wouldn't be able to smell ambroxen. I received the La Labo sampler for Christmas from my sister and am working my way through a new fragrance each day. Today I sampled Another 13, and my goodness I found it to be so in-your-face strong! I don't know how someone couldn't smell it. At first, I didn't like it at all. I found it very overwhelming, and too dirty like animal pee (sorry don't clobber me!). That said, as it has dried down over the past couple hours on my skin, it's beginning to smell much more sensual and interesting. I might like it better on my husband, even though I often like unisex fragrances with neroli and sandlewood. Let's just say, Another 13 is quite different coming off the soft nectar fragrance Ambrette 9, which I loved. Also, it brought me to this video to learn more about ambroxen, so thanks for posting this video!
I had the same experience with the “animal pee” smell, ugh. Recently sprayed Not a Perfume intense on my arm at Sephora. I liked it on a tester and in the air… As I was walking around the store I smelled it again. OMG… I couldn’t scrub it off soon enough! I came to this video wondering if anyone felt the same about it.
I like this format. Please try to feature more notes and the fragrances that highlight these notes. It would be helpful to those who have tested expensive niche fragrances and loved it but also looking for slightly cheaper fragrances designer or niche. Thanks!
I just discovered this note with Dior Sauvage eau de parfum, and I absolutely love it. I’ve wanted this type of scent, but most oriental feminine perfumes are too sweet. I want to try Versace Eros and its flanker Flame next.
To me another simple molecule that has a very complex smell is Dihydromyrcenol, it's so intrinsically masculine and shave lotion and yet sophisticated.
Great video! Great idea! On the subject of ambroxan, I seem to not be alble to resonate with it. I find it too scratchy on my nose. Not at all like ambregris 😕
Awesome video! It's interesting to learn about ambroxan and hear your thoughts on the scent. For once I'm actually familiar with the scents you've mentioned because my girlfriend was looking for a subtle scent and got samples of Not a Perfume, Escentric 02 and I don't know what. I ended up getting I don't know what for her because the smell is so unique, slightly metallic yet so compelling
Yes! Like these videos a lot. And, yes, do Ambergris please, cuz it's nothing like Ambroxan to my nose; way more beautiful. They seem to have totally different purposes.
Thank you Sebastian for sharing this valuable information with the perfume community. Could you please do a video on female powdery fragrances and the best combos on layering female / unisex designer perfumes. Thank you and keep up the good work.
So I first bought Juliette Has A Gun Not A Perfume and have loved it from the her go, and it is so strong on me. I will smell myself 24hrs later (if I haven't bathed yet). So naturally I blind bought Superdose. At first I was completely anosmic to it besides the initial alcohol blast. I've had it a few months and I'm no longer anosmic to it. Its very strong, but a different scent on me vs the original Not A Perfume. I think Superdose is a tad more masculine, and has this mixed drink vibe the same way the JHAG Moscow Mule does. I am really enjoying Superdose now, and will love it mixed with somw of my go to summer fragrances. The OG is still my fave from them. It's extremely creamy on me.
Sebastian I love been educated big for this particular video could you please do Hedione I'm not sure if I'm writing correctly 🤔 the name HEDIONE help.
Oh I cannot STAND another 13, got a sample, had to give it away immediately, took a small dab on my arm, stayed on even after showering, just made me feel sick. too much ozone.
Have you heard of Frequent Flyer from City Rhythm fragrances? That is my personal favorite base layer enhancer for fragrances. It definitely Amos up the projection and longevity of a scent.
I have a dilemma.... I can switch my Creed Aventus for a Roja Elysium or Roja Vetiver mmmmmm. I like soapy fresh and clean fragrances like ... Acqua di Gio homme, Prada L’homme, Perry Ellis red 360 ... Don’t like musky, powdery, amberoxyny, woody and oudiny ;-) what would you choose?
Thanks Im very interested in juliette has a gun not a perfume, I heard demi rawling also talking about this, its very minimalistic and non offensive but I heard it doesn't has a good longevity. But I,m looking for a nice everyday fragrance and nice sweet creamy floral fragrances for everyday or Valentine's day fragrances. Nice video! I knew ambroxan was a molecule but never knew what it smelled like. Please do a video on Valentine's day perfumes that you would like on woman, since there aren't a lot of females out there.
Interesting, thanks for posting. Recently had my first experience with Sauvage which is a known (and slightly noxious) Ambroxan bomb, and also had a sample of Aventus whose dry-down smelled very similar though not as intense (due to Ambergris). I happened to have a sample of DS&D I Don't Know What as well, and it, while decidedly fresh, smells distinct from the other two. Is this likely due to the addition of ISO E Super?
I also ran into the issue of being anosmic to many fragrances that feature ambroxan, and even those that feature ambergris. It really sucks, because I remember a while ago, being able to distinctively smell BR540 and being in love with it, but now my nose seems like it's changed and I can't detect anything but a faint smell of sweet latex gloves! Lol! The issue is the same with fragrances like Not a Perfume and Another 13, so I don't know if my nose is just broken or something :( if anyone knows any solutions to "retrain your nose" into being able to smell ambergris/ambroxan so-to-speak, please please please let me know!!! I really want to enjoy these fragrances!
I walked into a Burger King one day while wearing BR540. I hadn’t even made it to the counter yet and someone back in the grill area came out and complimented the smell in the air. She said it smelled ‘strong’. Being that I kno BR540 isn’t a ‘strong’ smelling fragrance per se,I knew she meant it was performing extremely well. I used to wonder why I can’t smell it anymore-but after that compliment I never questioned it again lol
This is a really helpful video, thank you! I haven't smelled BR540, but I understand that Ariana Grande Cloud is similar. I'm finding that what I suspect is ambroxan (and your video is helping to confirm) is a note that I don't tolerate wearing in larger quantities. After 30 mins or so on my skin, it smells very strong to me and unpleasant. How would we find out what other common fragrances might contain ambroxan, and do they typically list the note or instead list "amber" or "ambergris" or other terminology (even if it's chemically inaccurate)?
I find Jeremy's Office and Date seem to have this smell that makes me feel ill. It's like a skunky smell. I first smelled it with Sauvage. Just trying to figure out what it is? Iam leaning to maybe it's the ambroxan Iam smelling, not sure but I hate that smell.
To be honest. I detest the lingering chemical smell on my skin after many modern perfumes. I find it cheap nasty and nauseating to my senses. I have to declutter or give away any of my perfumes that contains these chemicals containing Ambroxan or Iso e super etc. if all modern perfumes will go this route, I’ll have to source vintage.
Can I hear your thoughts on Clean Reserve? I am blown away by the minimilistic and clean cold linen sheets. Do you have any suggestions? I think it the ISO E that is my attraction, but I am not really sure whether it is that or Abroxan. I so want this to be my office fragnance, just super clean.
I got more of the ambroxane feel you describe now in Gaiac 10 than in Another 13. The first few days I couldn't smell it at all. But after a few days it started smelling really nice. Now it has become my favorite perfume.
Prada Women the one in the rectangular bottle that came out in 2005 (I believe it was 2005) that one has huge amounts of ambroxan in it and I loved that smell so much it is addictive but in the airplane the perfume evaporated until it was almost empty which was interesting to watch. Haha and it also had that old fashioned pink pump ball on it which made it evaporate even faster. And it also had to do with the alcohol content even though it was the Perfume and not Eau de toilette. Some fragrances such as ambroxan are very volatile by themselves even in oil form but particularly in an alcohol base. So also for my skin I prefer oil based perfumes alcohol free and toxin free.
I have some perfumes that seem to be all top note. Could layering the "Not a Perfume" with those fragrances help to round out the experience of wearing those fragrances?
I’m not sure why, but fragrances with dominant ambroxan notes don’t develop well on my skin, but smell great on other people. For me, these fragrances end up smelling like cheap or spicy shower gel, or become overly sweet. Are these results indicative of a skin chemistry incompatibility?
👏👏👏Great video! Great content! Keep them coming. Love learning about each notes. Your channel was the very 1st TH-cam channel that I've subscribed to. Thank you for your hard work. 🙏 Keep it up! Always looking forward to seeing your videos.

I like this format. Please try to feature more notes and the fragrances that highlight these notes. It would be helpful to those who have tested expensive niche fragrances and loved it but also looking for slightly cheaper fragrances designer or niche. Thanks!
AMAZING video brother! Tnx for educating us, so important to know what we're wearing to appreciate our (or avoid) frags.
I just discovered this note with Dior Sauvage eau de parfum, and I absolutely love it. I’ve wanted this type of scent, but most oriental feminine perfumes are too sweet. I want to try Versace Eros and its flanker Flame next.
Can ambroxan cause a headache? For some reason I experience it with Dior sauvage EDT
Me too, suffocating, it's a thick smell that blankets everything else.
To me another simple molecule that has a very complex smell is Dihydromyrcenol, it's so intrinsically masculine and shave lotion and yet sophisticated.
I enjoyed this Sebastian, would enjoy exploring more via the format for sure
Thank you for covering this topic! I have been wondering this for a while now! I can't smell anything at all from Molecule 02
Thank you for your informative video! I walked past a honeysuckle tree today and WOW! I was wondering if you knew about some honeysuckle fragrances.
Sebastián, I had never considered one could train one's nose to get past anosmia!?!?!!! That is fascinating!
Nice educative video... let's talk about Super E and Ambergris on coming videos. It will be a good serie.
Love this video idea! Please do more. Thanks!
Wow, what an education on ambroxin. Thank you
Sebastian I love been educated big for this particular video could you please do Hedione I'm not sure if I'm writing correctly 🤔 the name HEDIONE help.
Yes I love that note! Hedione. 😀
Oh I cannot STAND another 13, got a sample, had to give it away immediately, took a small dab on my arm, stayed on even after showering, just made me feel sick. too much ozone.
I love the glossary videos! Nicely curated
Thank you so much for this kind of video! Your videos are so knowledgeable for me as a newbie. Hope you have a great day, Seb! 👏🏻🌿
Have you heard of Frequent Flyer from City Rhythm fragrances? That is my personal favorite base layer enhancer for fragrances. It definitely Amos up the projection and longevity of a scent.
Yes more videos with fragrances like these ! Thanks
I cant smell Sauvage after 5 minutes, but in first week it was too strong for me. Others can smell it on me i guess..
Yes. I like to learn more about the ingredients and notes of the perfumes
Fantastic video! I really enjoy Sauvage fragrance line. I look forward to your ambergris video! 👍🏾
Love this format of videos
This is great Sebastian!
Yeah that's ambroxan
To be honest. I detest the
lingering chemical smell on my skin after many modern perfumes.
Could you do a bergamot video
Arabian oud - Arabian Knight Silver is my fav Ambroxin perfume
I fuggin' love Ambroxan. You introduced me, and I'm hooked.
Fantastic content! Nicely done.
Very informative video, thank you, this helps me understand it better than just looking on Fragrantica.
Really enjoyed this type of videos so please keep it up
It's a salty, woody, minimalistic experience. That's what she said.
👏👏👏Great video! Great content! Keep them coming. Love learning about each notes. Your channel was the very 1st TH-cam channel that I've subscribed to. Thank you for your hard work. 🙏 Keep it up! Always looking forward to seeing your videos.
Thank you very much! :)
Brilliant and informative video 👍🏾
Loved this video!!!
Great video !! Thank you for answering/realising my question/idea by making a video 😊
No problem. Thank you for the support! :)
Very informative. Excellent job.
Dior Sauvage literally makes me sick to my stomach!!! I recently found out that it’s because of the ambroxan
