    I was surprised they had nothing about how important Bear Butte has been to the Lakota and Cheyenne peoples. When we walked up the trail to the top, the first time was before the fire, the sacredness was so important. One of the park people was a Cheyenne. On the way up it asked people to be respectful as Indians would be praying. One man coming down had bare feet. Along the trail were the prayer cloths on pine branches. At that time there were both tepees and campers in an area below where it is said Crazy Horse once talked to his people. It is also said that he's buried on the other side of the mountain in a secret place. Indians were still doing spirit quests there but wonder if any of that is now banned. Sad if so as it was very much a sacred place the times I've been there.

      Thank you Rain for sharing this bit of historical facts. So much is left unsaid that really should be brought into the light. Possibly the Welcome Center might have referenced such but as Russ stated it was closed due to the pandemic. A picture board should have been designated for Native American info regarding the tribal sacredness of Bear Butte.

    Today, on Facebook, a photo memory from 2011 popped up of my granddaughter on Bear Butte; I took the photo looking down on the area you show with buffalo, and those distant Black Hills. Lovely to see your drive-it takes me back to when grandparents and grandchildren could be together, just like that. The visitors center was open in 2011, and it’s really a good one...sad that coronavirus has closed it for now.

    I grew up there and I was hiking up that mountain when I was 8 or 9 and I heard a loud roar and ran down. No idea what it was. It's way bigger than it looks and there is big wooden decks as lookouts way up top where you can see forever!!

    Big wave Russ. The Black hills and the beautiful land in South Dakota amazed me when we visited there and also still to day amazes me when I see your videos. Beautiful. The remnants of the Volcano are something else, and the videos of all the beautiful bikes and all the work of creativity that goes into building those bikes is amazing. Thank you for sharing. We so appreciate you sharing your virtual holiday with all of us. Take care Russ. Stay safe, and keep on trucking. Carolyn & Colin Hogarth Canada

    Bear Butte is a really cool place. Years before I ever had a drone, my wife and I hiked up to the the top and I flew my RC slope glider off the top. Lots of wind means lots of lift and I still have a plane or 2 when we travel just in case we find a nice slope or cliff to launch off of. Now days, flying models is discouraged especially in National or State parks. Have fun!

    Lady at Custer must not have read the signs. She got off her motorcycle to approach a buffalo calf and another buffalo didn't like that. Ended up with helicopter ride to the hospital.

    Great view of the Black Hills in the distance with the Drone. Notice the rule on the entrance notice board. "Leaving or scattering of human remains prohibited" Must have been a practice engaged in by the local Indian Tribes People. Note. Bear Butte Mountain is not a volcano. It's a laccolith A magma intrusion that came up through the rocks that didn't quite reach the surface. After a very long time, the rocks above the magma were weathered away exposing the igneous rock intrusion

    • @lindagolden9892
      @lindagolden9892 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my humble opinion if Bear Butte has sacred significance to tribal people then they should have the right to scatter a loved one’s ashes there. I’m willing to bet this land was once theirs illegally and greedily taken away by our forefathers. 😢

    • @skyfacer9626
      @skyfacer9626 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lindagolden9892 It was. I've read somewhere that the entire Black Hills region was given to the Plains Indians as their last reservation. But then the white man realised there was Gold in those hills and that was that. The region ended up being the theatre for the last Indian wars culminating in General Custer's 'Last Stand' and after that, the massacre at Wounded Knee. A truly dreadful event. Have I got my 'facts' correct on all this ?
