  • NMCA Master Teacher Lisa Dalton leads Wil Kilroy through the three basic gestures used in forming a Compositionary Gesture Sequence that can later be condensed into a single Psychological Gesture. This Intellect-based technique uses Leading Questions that provide a surefire path to discovery of a Psychological Gesture. It's a great help if the ideal paths of Inspiration and Imagination fail to reveal the Psychological Gesture. Kilroy is using the role of Steve from Becky’s New Car by Steven Dietz to explore the process.

So are you supposed to do these before preforming on stage/film or is it just something you do daily as practise to get emotional?

The archetypal gestures like push and pull, lift and smash, gather and tear are great to do as practice for everyday. Then for specific characters, yes you rehearse them to get the right energy and you can do them just before you perform. You can also do them in your imagination as you are acting. You get to play and practice to see what way is most inspiring for you. You are unique so how it works for you can be unique to you so experimenting is a great way to find out what you love best.
