- The 1980s were a decade of change in the motoring industry, and a decade of absolutely stonking excess around it. With everything getting bigger, louder, wilder and brighter, the eras concept cars basically followed suit, shedding the wedge-centred image of the 1970s in order to get a bit more bonkers through the 1980s.
The decade featured some truly revolutionary thinking too, from a minivan with a Lamborghini V12 under the bonnet, to a car with eight wheels that could split into two, via a strange car/bike hybrid concept that could seat six with both a wheel and handlebars. The 1980s was truly the decade of the crazy concept car.

Which of these should have been built?
I would like the Lamborghini Aton. However I have to mention the Concepts like the Nissan NX 21 a breakthrough in engine technology, or Lamborghini P140 which brought us the Diablo in this case is far better than the concept and finally Mercedes Benz 190 Cabrio that never saw the light, a shame really. Very interesting video, when the concept looked something very futuristic.
The Concept Trans sport by far! It should be made today. It would actually sell in todays market of super SUV's.
Brown or not, I would love to have a Citroën Karina. At least it would have been in somewhat affordable, if ever built, compared to the likes of Lamborghini and co.

Funny you mentioned the idea of jump-starting a new idea to the public with a concept. The Trans Sport (and its relatives Chevrolet Lumina APV and Oldsmobile Silhouette) were already fully designed and ready for production before the concept was even thought of. So while the production vans were indeed radical for the time, the REALLY radical concept made the production cars far more palatable when released two years later.
The Louvre pyramid wasn't around yet when the Citroën Karin was built. Not for another 8 years.
It's also not pronounced "Loof ".
And Countach isn’t pronounced as count-ashe either.
So the Karin inspired the McLaren F1 and the Louvre. So definitely the one that deserves to be built.
That concept Trans sport is awesome. It's like a Helicopter and a Nascar got fused into a mini van. I mean look how thick those tires are!

Just ask Lamborghini if they can build you one, and if they will accept a 1000 year long down payment plan.
On second thought, it would probably be priceless and a billionaire would probably pick it up for the twice the price you payed for it after you had your fun with it.

These concepts are not so "crazy" compared to the crazy SUV crap that we have today.
They might be crap but they aren't "crazy." These are original ideas; SUVs are boring because they are derivative.
My favorite vehicle on the list would be the Pontiac Trans Sport . I like the huge glass sections and the weird front bumper with the thin headlights
I want a first gen Pontiac Transport. A white one. The production model still looked like a prototype. That thing looked like some kind of space shuttle.
Thanks to your video I recognized TOYOTA stole the idea of a minivan styling from PONTIAC and made the 1st ESTIMA. They look very similar to me. 5:47

That is the exact definition of a concept, and the same reason why it never makes it to production and looks the same most of the time.

The machimoto feels like an 80's version of the polaris slingshot. Not wholly practical, but it would probably slay the vacation rental market

I feel like in general, 80's concept cars were basically all a result of that one guy going "What if we did this?" and everyone else was just too nice to tell them no (At least before the people much higher up did).

I seen the Citroën Karin and the Lamborghini Athon at the first car show I remember going too. I had the program for many years from that show and both cars were featured in it. That is why I remember. I also recall seeing a Range Rover concept topless called Ranch Rover at another car show, which also had the new DMC 12.

These concept cars should look like the cars in the 2020s. The cars in this future of 2022 are not what i expected. They should look like these but nope, we didnt get a Bladerunner,Total Recall,The Running man future that i dreamed of as a kid in the early 90s watching 80s scifi movies.

I think the Machimoto was intended as an industry joke, a sort of dig at how loony concept cars were becoming.

The most daring car concept aspect we had in the last 10 years were petrol engines. That's the most daring and creative thing about them. How sad...since the 2000s, cars have become so boring

These models are so hard to find that I think even Jay Leno does not have them all. I did, however, see the Briggs & Stratton featured in his channel. By the way, Leno featured the first ever true hybrid, the Owen Magnetic, manufactured in 1915!
The Voyager III is very similar in concept to the scale model Amtronic released by AMT in 1969, though without the jet engines and hovercraft mode.
I built that kit and loved it. :-)

The Karin didn't pre-empt the F1's three seat layout by "decades"; the Mclaren was released in 1992. Mind you, the Mclaren was designed by a proper engineer, not a stylist claiming the credit as "designer".
The Lamborghini concept, if you were to cut it in half and display just the front half, would look exactly like a mid to late 80s RX7.
