Resealing my VVT Solenoid 05 Honda Odyssey 3.5L

  • In this video I take you along with me as I attempt to perform some "hack engineering" on my 2005 Honda Odyssey 3.5L. I suspected that my VVT solenoid, aka spool valve, had developed a leak between the two halves of the body. There is a seal inside that was not available aftermarket or dealer that tends to leak. The seal is available now. So, the "official repair" would be to replace seals or replace the whole VVT solenoid. (I would suggest replacing the seals as it is much cheaper. In this video I attempt to fix it another way.
    Do note: This video is not intended to be used for the purposes of showing you how to repair your vehicle in the manner I did in the video. The method used in the video it not a "proper repair" and could potentially damage your engine. DON'T DO IT THIS WAY!
    One way it could damage your engine is that it may not fix the leak at all and you could leak all your oil out causing severe engine damage. Another way it could damage your engine is by clogging up the small passages inside your engine with RTV. RTV could break away from the inside of the valve and travel into the engine where it could potentially dam up the flow of engine oil to important components of the engine causing failure of said components and or complete engine failure.
    So, I say again, do not repair your vehicle in this manner. It could cost you hundreds if not thousands of dollars. This video is intended for gaining information about this problem and also for entertainment. (I may be sorry I did this to my own vehicle. Though I'm not terrible concerned about it as I can repair it for just the cost of parts)
    Now that part number for the VVT solenoid is 918-078 (this is a Dorman VVT Solenoid and note this part # was provided as help to you and not for the purposes of promoting Dorman products.)
    As for the aftermarket seals, which I would suggest replacing instead of replacing the whole valve. The part # is 917-0268-1. It's a VVT Solenoid Gasket Kit, it's one kit, but contains both gaskets.
    Here is a link to a website that sells this part : www.napaonline...
    Same thing on the NAPA parts as the Dorman parts. I'm no promoting either although I think they are both great!
    Note: Always consult your parts pro to insure that any part you purchase is the correct part for your vehicle including the one mentioned above.
    Sorry, I do not have the torque specifications for the three bolts that hold the two halves of the housing together and I do not know where to get that information. I would suggest using a repair manual when performing the task of replacing the seals. (Not sure if this information is available.)

    My local dealership told me this repair would be $1140. Thanks to both your videos i feel i can replace both gaskets and have a fix for around $20. THIS IS AWESOME!

    I had a 2005 and about a year ago had to do something similar, but I made a whole new gasket with RTV. I first filled the groove neatly and then put equal shims (thin) around the gap and tightened the bolts and let dry overnight. I then cam back and trimmed off the excess and it worked great! Didn't have a replacement gasket at the time - I wish they did. This thing drove me crazy after replacing the base gasket first and it was still leaking. Thanks for the video!

    I found the gasket that included that gasket on Rockauto. It is a DORMAN 917268. The kit includes both. I noticed that it is only for the EX-L and the EX and LX doesn't have the two gasket set.

      Yea, they don’t offer it..... at least that’s what I was told. You can get it aftermarket now though. I found both gaskets for under $20.....for both!

    They told you you can't buy the gasket? I went to Honda and told them what was wrong and what part I needed. And they gave me the vtec solenoid gasket. Cost me $20. I'm in Canada. Nevermind I see that you said you can buy the gasket now. Which is what I did and it is apparently easy to do

    I own a 2006 honda odyssey and ive learned more about this dadgum vvt than care to know.. this however is new to.. the gasket in the inside.. this has been so frustrating to find a mechanic how is willing to take apart and clean.. i keep getting p2646 code.. after my oil change at jiffy lube a few weeks ago..had a different mechanic changed the oil and filter and he looked at the part changed the main seal with the 4 holes.. but i dont think he ever even opened it.. said that if the light came on change the assembly.. everyone I've called or taken to look at says the samething.. replace. Change oil. Etc. No one has once ever mentioned opening up and cleaning it up.. did this work for you?

    • @BarboursAutoHelp
      @BarboursAutoHelp  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I didn’t do this to take care of a check engine light or a diagnostic code. I had an oil leak. That’s the only reason I took it apart to reseal it. It’s not leaking anymore but from the sound of it I don’t think taking it apart to clean it is going to help your problem.

      BarboursAutoHelp that's interesting.. well i am leaking oil from that part and according to the mechanics ive had look at it.. they say that's my issue.. and to replace the whole assembly but who know maybe the solenoid or some electrical compontant is malfunctioning aswell kicking off the code? bc honestly I've been checking my oil i haven't noticed a significant difference in the level.. who know i can only guess that what they're are telling me to is bit the bullet pay $500 for a part then cost of labor because im not mechanically inclined to handle it myself.. i figured if it was just a leak .. check the seals.. all of them.. i just dont want to get taken advantage.. the last guy(recommended to me by a coworker)put silicon in my power steering hoses and turned in to hot mess . I thought for sure the jiffy lubes guys put the wrong oil density in with this new issue.. rocker arm oil pressure control solenoid .. blah blah blah.. we will see what happen..

    I did same procedure on my Mercedes oil filter to cooler housing gasket and it worked.I have put on the outer gasket a number of times Grey Gasket maker, but every time I tighten it, the bolts get necking and elmgate by 2-3 mm with 9 inch ratchet.
    .1. Does the inner gasket needs to be sealed with external gasket?
    2. What are the O rings for?
    3. My external gasket is soft and still 2.6-2.7 mm thick and new is .8-2.9 mm.
    4. What torque did you se for tightening.

    I did same for my old prelude vtec valve. It's work very well. How many VTEC valve on 2005 Odyssey ? I am working on it, just don't see vtec on front cylinder head ???

  • @stbaldawi
    @stbaldawi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I replaced the vtec spool valve gasket (the front one next to oil dipstick) on my 2009 Odyssey then I got code P3497 (Cylinder Deactivation System bank 2) then i got P0394 code (cylinder 4 misfire). Honda said #4 fuel injector is bad.
    I didn't do the repair yet and have the van parked with no use. I am afraid to dump money on it and the same problem come back again.
    I started to hate Hondas because of this very touchy stupid system of VTEC engines.

      I had the same problem my 2011 odyssey, but after going back through the van we realized that it was the lower aftermarket gasket that had just been replaced was failing after just a day. Buy the VVT solenoid from the dealer and use the gaskets provided. My van immediately ran better and no longer giving codes.

    They sell the gasket kit at O'Reilly auto parts. Be sure to torque the bolts correctly or it will leak again.

      Do you know the torque spec?

    • @victordelgado6055
      @victordelgado6055 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I found that 7.7 lb-ft is what it should be but ended up torqueing it to 8.7 lb-ft which ended up working out. This is informationI got from a guy named Chuck that was pretty consistent with others:
      "Honda wants 6 x 1.0mm bolts torqued to 12nM or 8.7 lb-ft.
      If you're looking at another size bolt it will be different. See
      www.cncexpo.com/MetricBoltTorque.aspx
      Note the 75% proof load torque spec for a 6 x 1.0 bolt is 7.7 lb-ft so Honda wants a little tighter."

      @@BarboursAutoHelp its looks ok you think its okay to use a super light amount of Honda bond on the inner seal? The inner gasket bolts need to be tighten to 9 lbs torque I gather like the outer ones?
