You only need to remove the 3 long bolts, you DO NOT need to remove the short middle bolt. Make sure to clean the housing and everything with brake cleaner. Apply the liquid sealant to both sides of the gasket IF you get a leak by only applying gasket to one side. Let the gasket cure overnight before starting the van. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ

It's been 5 years now, I know, but did the bond work fine, like no engine light or leak after that? Seems like hinda doesn't sell the gaskets and people complain about the Amazon ones that claim to be honda

Ngl that was the first thing that came to mind. All my engine bays look like shit. This engine bay looks better than my 74' stingrays granted my small block chevy power plant looks much better but I feel ashamed. 🤦♂️

Tell me about it. The leak covered my alternator, catalytic converter, etc all covered with oil.

Thanks, MrRangerZr1 - I believe my leak is the same problem. My alternator still works, but covered with oil. Can you use degreaser or something to clean it?
I wouldn't spray or drench the alternator in water. I would spray some brake cleaner on a towel and wipe it clean.
@@MrRangerZr1 Thanks for the procedure, right now I am having the same problem and I read stories about people who changed the gasket, cleaned the surfaces, tightened the bolts with specified torque and it still leaks. Is there any secret while doing it so that it does not leak? Also for those of you who have oil spilled on alternator, NEVER spray brake cleaner or carburetor cleaner on alternator. Just like MrRangerZr1 stated, take a towel and spray the brake cleaner on the towel, then wipe the alternator as much as possible, other solutions require replacing it or taking the alternator to a rebuilder.

Just did mine the other night I'm happy I looked around to make sure it wasn't something else. I'm good on putting gasket sealer on that part though.. I have my old part with extra gaskets and I'm going to get a junkyard alternator to keep in the car for. Road trips just incase this happens again on the road. Even though all the parts are new now .I kept all my old parts for that reason lol I refuse to leave my family abd me on the side of the road
This fixes the issue if done right, but after this video was published the gaskets came out, that's why I have a updated video.

FYI you walked me through replacing an alternator today on the 2010.
Did the leak cause alternator issues? Just bought 2010 a few months ago and check charging system light comes on periodically, but almost always when first starts. Then turns off about 10-15 minsters later. Before turning on the car, the battery is testing at 12.6 V after starting it gradually goes down until the check charging system light turns off then immediately jumps up to 14 V. When the check charging system light turns off the car hesitates for just a split second like it wants to die and then everything rubs back up. Trying to figure out what’s going on, advanced auto and AutoZone tested battery and alternator and both said it was fine. Today however I noticed some leaking around the dipstick area but looks like it’s coming from slightly above, so I’m thinking it’s this valve leaking thing. I had read somewhere online that it leaking could lead to alternator issues, I don’t know anything about cars and I’m just trying to learn and was wondering if you had the same issue?
Yes. It fried the alternator.

All u gotta do is go to a car wash leave the engine running set to degreaser mode let sit for 2 minutes then rinse with pressure nozzle. lastly dont turn off engine until water has evaporated. Done.

Great video! Helped me out a lot. I followed all the directions step by step. Brake cleaner. And let the sealant dry for a 24 hours. The leak has noticeably slowed down. Would you recommend doing the same sealant to the bottom gasket?

Never pull on the wires, grab and pull on the connector itself.
Hi. I am in need of replacing that very same gasket but Honda will only sell the hole part . Did you purchase that gasket sealer from Honda or your local store like Autozone? Thanks
The sealer is from Honda. I don't think Autozone has it, they have a similar gasket called Permatex but Hondabond is best.
Check Amazon or eBay they cost 14 for the set
Before I tear into mine, I bought the replacement part direct from Honda. It came as a complete unit not just the top half as depicted in the video. However, there was no gasket of any kind. Should there be a replacement gasket for the lower section where it meets the engine? I would have thought Honda would have provided one if there was, or suggested it when ordering/buying. Anyone who can help would be appreciated. Thanks
That portion is installed with hondabond. You just need to remove the gaskets from the assembly and put it on your car.

There is no torque specs in the manual, I would say 8-9 ft. lbs. Just tighten it down like I show in the video.

hey man, I have an 08 and i got 20" SS camaro staggered wheels. I plan to chop springs and roll back fenders. I have adjustable rear control arms on way. any clue how much spring to chop? ty! are you on FB? people are asking for you LOL
Man don't do that. Just get H&R springs. Cutting springs is a big no no, from alignment from wearing things out, it's bad.

Did this last year on 08 accord v6 coupe.
However the leak returned but the leak is lower down now, or maybe it was there where the original leak was all along. If I remove the part below the solenoid what kind of mess am I looking at, is there a gasket there also or is it just epoxy on the lower portion?

Don't use epoxy, replace the gaskets. Check the update video in description.

Tighten it down, then wait. Overnight is best.

Did you buy OEM spool valve. I saw you made 2 videos on this and not sure if you bought an aftermarket and it didn't work and leaked?

I did exactly what you did. I only used gasket seal on that one same gasket you did in the video... still leaks used seal on the other gasket underneath the plate too. And I still got leaks.... is it just because I got a bad new gasket? Help

had this done on my 2008 odyssey and then check engine light came on. mechanic said it was a transmission issue that caused the light, so i ran it to transmission shop who fixed that cheaply. On the ride we noticed the van's now not running on all cylinders. wondering if you've any experience with this chain of events?
Both your mechanic and transmission shops dont know what they are doing.
What problem did you go in with to begin with?
@@MrRangerZr1 had an oil leak near the dipstick. they changed the "variable valve timing solenoid" and "valve cover gasket". Now it's misfiring and the engine light is on. The transmission light was on too, but had a transmission place remedy that. They unplugged and reseated two connectors. So currently the check eng light is on and it's misfiring. First mechanic is having a look at it again this Friday. I've gone to him for 15 years. Usually it's great work. Saw your video and am I right to think the valve gasket is on wrong in some way?
No idea what they did. They most likely didn't put an OEM solenoid on.

@@MrRangerZr1 Hey really appreciate your videos. I recently changed my rear spool assembly with an aftermarket from Amazon on my 07 odyssey. Leaked. Ordered another, leaked worse. Thinking of getting the Honda sealant and applying it on the new assembly that's leaking. I may have overtightened this last one, so not sure if that would make it leak worse. Just wondering what's your take on this.? Will applying the HD sealant cure my problem? Could overtightening make it leak? I'm running out of options and don't want to have to buy $700 oem 😬

@@MrRangerZr1 Yes I watched it. I installed a brand new aftermarket spool valve (twice) and the included gasket for the surface between valve and the head. So not sure about any additional gaskets. I bought the Honda HD today so I'm going to take it off and put a thin layer of HD on the new gasket and reinstall. Hopefully that solves it. Could just be cheap Chinese parts. Crazy.

I'm not 100% on the rear solenoid...it should be the same as the front. Get a mirror and look around. Worst case, you might have to remove the rocker arm assembly to replace the spool valve. I'll take a look at my van and will let you know.

I just did this for my 2009 accord V6 , but the oil still seep through when I start the engine. The gasket maker i use is genuine Toyota fluid seal packing. Do I need to do it again?
The reason why that happens is when you reinstall the assembly, oil seeps down and ruins the gasket. First clean the inside of the assembly with brake cleaner, make sure no oil is present, and then apply the gasket. It happened to me.

I have a 2009 Honda Accord EXL V6 and it’s leaking in the front. I am thinking it’s a valve cover gasket. But more than likely it may be this. But on my car the part doesn’t look like the same as video
Could be valve cover gaskets or the cover itself.
Is this the same thing as an oil spool valve? Mine is leaking directly over the alternator. If it's this easy, I'll fix it myself.

Just recently ordered gaskets and replace small leak on 2008 Honda Odyssey, afterwards got a P2659 code but went away after going 5 miles down the road, 250 miles later check engine light comes back on, sure it’s the same code, can anyone help me on this or maybe had the same problem what did you do to clear the codes, I followed the steps as shown in the video but still got a code. Thanks for any help!
Well check the code again, could be something else. If the same code did come back, you need to change the whole assembly.
Disconnect the battery. Unclip the 2 electrical connectors. Remove the 3 bolts (not that middle one). Pivot the valve out from under the wire harness. No need to remove anything other than the 2 electical connectors and 3 bolts.
Do you reccomend changing the gaskets or the whole assembly? I have the gasket for it.

@@sangxu6876 That's not replaceable. Bottom switch has a o-ring. Thoroughly clean the area and watch where it leaks from.
I have an engine oil leakage from passenger side on my odyssey 2010 EXL. I checked it is not coming from oil filter gasket. I suspect my front solenoid gasket is leaking but i am not sure. How can I verify that front solenoid is the real culprit before fixing it? And how could I verify that which solenoid gasket (under and above metal plate or both) are bad and need to be fixed and replaced? Any suggestions to identify bad/leaking gasket.
Thoroughly degrease/clean the whole engine bay. After you clean it, you'll be able to tell easily where the leak is coming from.
MrRangerZr1 thanks. How can I clean engine area around belt (right front wheel side), there is not much space for cleaning.
I have videos of cleaning the engine bay on my channel. Just cover the alternator and spray degreaser, let the degreaser eat through the grime and wash it off with water.

Yep that's the solenoid gaskets, it will look like it's leaking from the dipstick. Check out the new updated video of the solenoid gaskets. It's linked in the description.

I want to replace the entire spool valve, not the gasket. Is this the proper way to get to it and remove it?
To replace the entire assembly you need to remove the valve cover and rocker arm assembly. No need to replace unless the hondabond is leaking, which is very rare.

I’m happy to see how many people have had success with this. But unfortunately I’m very upset because I cannot get this. I have a 2011 Honda Odyssey EXL that needs the front spool valve gasket replaced due to significant leak. I cannot follow these directions verbatim because on the right side of where the injectors are at about the one minute mark in this video, there is a thick plastic ridged line that comes off and attaches to a fuse box and the battery. I have no idea how to begin to disconnect it. It’s not a connector. It floors me nobody else has run in to this. Does anyone have any idea what I’m talking about?......I literally cannot move the piece out of the way so I can’t move on through the process
Work around the harness, you don't have to remove the wiring harness completely out of the way. Makes it easier but not necessary.

What is the function of the Vtec solenoid ?
Controls VTEC engagement. At 4200, 5500, whatever RPM VTEC kicks in in your car, the solenoid activates vtec, giving you more power.
how do you know the solenoid oil leak is from the top gasket not the bottom one?
You really can't tell, that's why you replace both gaskets like in the updated video.
I have an engine vacuum leak which I can't find but I hear vacuum hissing sound by this Solenoid. Can vtech solenoid cause vacuum leaks?
Check the PCV hose right untop of it
@@MrRangerZr1 I did, its something else. I am hearing an audible hissing sound. Can intake manifold gasket cause vacuum leak? I am also wondering if I should change valve cover gasket (there is no oil leak what so ever), I assume a leaking valve cover will cause oil spills, but I am getting frustrated.

What if you already bought the whole assembly. Could you use the top part of the new one and but the bond on the bottom gasket?
Shop manual says to remove rocker arms to replace the whole assembly. I would try to sell the part or return it.
I have bought the whole solenoid with the intent of only replacing the top piece. I also wish Honda would simply just make a gasket for the top piece. It is usually the only failure when this part leaks oil.
In dealing with the VTEC solenoid assembly, where in the shop manuel is the proceedure. Haven't found that yet. The gasket sealer did not work for me so I have the assembly. Thanks

Are there torque specs for those bolts?
It's a very small spec, like 6-8 ft.lbf.
Can someone please explain what this means? I am a female that has never worked on her car and I’m going to have to probably change this myself and I don’t want to screw something up.
Torque spec means how hard you tighten the bolts. For this dont go as tight as u possibly can, just go pretty tight… try to feel how tight they are as your taking them off
According to Honda Service Bulletin 20-023 (replacing the entire assembly, including new bolts), all three bolts are torqued to 8N-m, 6 ft-lb.
Do you use the car… that engine bay looks brand new!

@@zirensausi8119 I can confirm after replacing 2 alternators that yes the Spool Valve Assembly for the VTEC solenoid, part number 15810-R70-A04, was leaking on the alternator killing it eventually.

dammit i tightened 1 bolt and it snapped in half... fuck me lol
Damn how you gonna take it out. Might need to drill or grab a vice grip to thread it out.
Once the bolt bottoms out, just snug it up. Doesn't have to be on super tight.
well I got lucky after it turned like it stripped I backed it out and it all came out and the middle of the bolt was twisted and snapped when i got it out but it all came out. I'm worried the threads inside are stripped but no shavings came out.. now I gotta find a replacement bolt :( :( :(
