  • A Second World War veteran celebrates his 100th birthday today (Sat) with his daily trip - to the GYM.
Retired army major John Hamilton, who was evacuated from Dunkirk, pumps iron every day - for 90 minutes.
The great-grandad, who smashed a rowing world record five years ago, is in remarkable shape and believes his health is improving.

I’m 56 and suffered from massive bloating for 3 months, couldn’t eat properly due to being so bloated and full, lost some weight, felt weak, but I changed my lifestyle. I forced myself to walk daily no matter how weak I felt. Ate when I had no appetite, and slowly but surely, I’m on the mend. Sometimes you have to know when to push. Because all it takes is turning that particular corner and you will get healthier and stronger.

The best way to reduce and prevent more muscle loss and "joint deterioration" (although thats not how it actually works), is by resistance training AND ADDING more weight. When it's done properly and progressively, no matter the age, its safe. We are not talking about adding 50 pounds here
