  • In efforts to save money while traveling Peru, we decided to do Machu Picchu completely on our own without a tour agency. In this video, we share what we did here and there to save a couple extra bucks throughout our time at Machu Picchu, and how we ultimately managed to complete our day trip for half the price of what Peruvian tour agencies were offering online. We hope you find this video helpful, and thank you for joining us at Peru's world famous Machu Picchu! 🇵🇪

    Was there in 1981. My friend and I climbed the big peak with 2 other tourists from Germany, but didn't make it back in time before they closed and locked the gates. It was dark by then and the 4 of us were the only ones on the grounds. We had to yell for awhile for someone to let us out. They had to get someone from down the hill to get the key. Very embarrassing. People were not happy. However, it was all quite beautiful at night. The moon was almost full. The walls of the ruins glowed in the moonlight.

    We did the same trip in 2016. In Ollantaytambo we stayed at the hotel that is right at the train station, which was convenient. You don't need a tour, we did everything ourselves with no problem. We paid less for a lot of things but that of course was 6 years earlier. For example, the taxi to Cisco was $65 then, the admission to MP was $24, the bus up the hill was $5. In Cusco, the elevation (12,000 ft) can affect some people; they recommended that we drink coca tea (similar to cocaine leaves) which did help.

  • @willp5709
    @willp5709 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    chad nailed it. if you have the time save the money. the trips quoted most certainly are starting and ending in cusco. you did leave out the caveat of that your expenses began at the train station. the travel to ollantaytambo, hotel and , food to start from that point you still save money from a established tour. the trip to cusco at the end of the day if its not too late. take a collectivo from the main square. they are about 15 soles $3.50 per person . great video you both did a wonderful job in presenting it.

    Great vlog you have done such a good job with it!
    It’s a life dream to go there but with my ill health I thought it may be too tricky at this particular stage/path of my life… but actually watching your vlog it’s giving me hope!
    I have a question or 2 …
    How far is the walking trail back by foot and how long did it take you?
    Also how much were accommodations?
    Why did you choose this place /village before the treck? Do you recommend it or is it just as well to depart from Cusco (or it makes it too long of a day) or Aguascalientes? Would you do it all the same and if not what would you change?!
    Great channel I love all the travel destinations you have chosen so far they are all on my bucket list (apart from one)
    Take care keep the good work

I follow "Overlanding Sophia" and Chesca from that channel started a book club, Where The Wild Books Are. This month we are reading Turn Right At Machu Picchu by Mark Adams. Well, your current travels fit in quite nicely with our book read. I have been enjoying your Peru travels thus far and looking forward to seeing more. Hi Chad & Claire. We’re you able to get all the way there by bus or did you have to walk some? Also did yo7 have to take medication to be able to go up do to the height? I watched a documentary and the travelers said they took medication furnished by the hotel to be able to go up that high and also that it was a tough climb on foot. I’ve always wanted to go, I’m getting up there in age but still have it on my list. Thanks for the great video.

    Peru rail can transport passengers closer to Cusco. On their bimodal transport, they transport by "bus" to and from Cusco and Ollantaytambo then train from ollantaytambo to Cusco. Why didn't you take their service to Cusco? Is it because of the baggage limitations?

    Thank you for making this video! Very informative! I keep reading online you have to hire a tour guide to get into the site, is that true?? Thanks!!

      @@ChadandClaire haha.... I am not sure what your plan is. But I would also suggest going to Titicaca lake, la Paz and Uyuni in Bolivia. Especially the salt flat in Uyuni. It is awesome. Have a great trip.

    great video.. seem like a fun exhausting daytrip. i thought macchu Picchu requires a guide entering the site? that may be a cost that is added to the overall cost. thank you for detail vlog... continue to enjoy trips and stay safe

    Hey! Thank you for sharing your experience! Can you guys please tell me for what time did you book your train and machu picchu tickets? I have no idea what is the ideal time to book my ticket to machu picchu if I take the first train in the morning 😅

    It is fairly easy to organize and visit Machu Picchu on your own. No need for tours or agency.

    Hi guys, really loved your vlog. Just a question though, when is the best time or season to go there so that there is not much tourist or crowd. Thanks a lot. God bless on your next adventure. 🙏❤️

    • @andreamorales1834
      @andreamorales1834 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! The best season to go IS when is crowded. The reason behind this is the weather. If you go on bad weather, you won´t see Machu Picchu just clouds covering it all up.
