Aloha, Christine. Have been living here on Maui for 3 years now. Transplant from Boston. Traffic, is bad, but not as bad as Honolulu. Had to visit the DMV 6 times, just to get my state identification. I don't drive. Every time I went they wanted more proof of my residency, even things not on the list. I had more than what was required, and could not believe what I was put through! Food, expensive and sometimes you have to go to 3 or 4 different markets to get what you need. I've yet to find any market here on west side that has pita bread or light cream, or buttermilk. Those are the negatives, on the positive side, it's natural beauty is stunning! Only 10 minute walk down the hillside to the beach. Weather is incredible. It's relatively crime free. People are for the most part friendly and welcoming. Had been visiting every year since 1985, before moving here to retire. I do not regret it. Saw you and Michael in costco one day before you left, but did not want to disturb you. Hope you get to come back and visit.
Great informative video. Lots of people don't realize that Honolulu is a big city with big city problems. Hawaii's population is about 1.5 million with close to a mil on Oahu which is where I live. It's very congested and very expensive but if you seek out the pros, you will find it. I love how you brought up the mainland attitude because that is very real. You are very mellow and humble so it's easy to see why you meshed with the locals easily. Those who are not will definitely have a much harder time. Island life is not for everyone but if you can travel and explore, it'll break up the monotony. It'll also make you appreciate home much more. Hawaii is paradise. It's my home and I love it! Glad you got to experience it when you did!
Everything Christine says is 100% accurate. I’ve been to every island except Niihau and Molokai. Hawaii isn’t for everyone, but it’s definitely for me. I cry each time I have to leave. It feels like I’m leaving a piece of my heart behind. What’s the best thing about the islands? The wonderful people.
Christine, I think I speak for a lot of your viewers when I say we’d love to know more about you astrologically. Do you believe in astrology? What are your sun, moon, and rising signs?
I found your vlog 5 years ago on how you moved to Maui. It helped me a lot. I’ve been living on Kauai since then and live it. I can also say all your I go is spot on. Aloha from one Vegan to another 🌺😎🌋
$ 8,500 to ship car, belongings in a 1/4 container. Shipped via truck to Matson on West coast...to Kohala on Big Island delivery to my front door. The shipping guys were great and very helpful. Loved them.
I agree with so many of your statements. Housing for sure, on Oahu, is all about showing up first then putting in applications. I’d also remind people that a lot of times, even if you have a secured job, you may not get your first paycheck for a month or two so plan financially. Living in Hawaii is how you make of it. Many people have housemates but you also have beautiful beaches and parks that become extensions of an entertainment space. I’d recommend people read up on blogs and watch a lot of TH-cam videos prior to the move, it helped me out a lot. The costs weren’t shocking to me because I lived in NYC so I adjusted rather well. I love how you described how Hawaii wraps it’s arms around you, I totally agree!!
We stayed near Makawao on both our trips to Maui. Loved how quiet it was. I'll take a quiet upcountry house rental over a fancy beachfront resort any day!
hai Christine I enjoyed this video so much, I can listen to you for hours, your voice is so soft and calm. From me you can still make a lot of videos, I always look forward to seeing new videos from Belgium many greetings
The public schools on Maui are pretty good. My 2 children were born and raised here on Maui. They went to 13 years of public school and both went to very good colleges on the mainland. My daughter is a middle school teacher here making a good wage. Private schools are very costly and it’s just not necessary. A brand new high school is being built in Kihei and there are 2 relatively new grammar schools in central Maui.
Hi Christine, as a follow up to the part where you talked about discrimination...I'm wondering if you can share any insights on what you learned about Native Hawaiian struggles and the fight for sovereignty while you were out there? What suggestions do you have for non-Native Hawaiians to be mindful/aware of Hawaii's history and current needs?
Do research and read up on History of Hawai'i. Right now there has been an official war crime being addressed Because Hawai'i was never annexed, the US can't provide proof so there are many things to learn about that. This Lady is only on mau'i and the Hawaiian activists aren't as active as other islands but they are there. Hawai'i is a family orientated place so it's pleasant for the most part. Aloha is key here, respect is given to those who learn about Hawai'i or what to take care of the land.
Great video! I have been talking about making one of these for a while but just haven't gotten too it. Great job explaining and understanding Maui! We shipped our car. We are from MN so we took one last big road trip and drove it to the west coast. It was cheaper and part of the adventure. We each only brought 3 check bags and shipped a few small boxes to my cousin's house. Luckily we had family to stay with for a time while we got jobs and found an apartment. It took us Months to find an apartment 5 years ago... and now it seems the apartment options are so much less. Maui will chew you up and spit you out. (Tests you big time) and if you are strong enough you will make it through. It is expensive and for the 1st 2 years my bf and I worked 50-60 hours a week or more. It was rough. Now we are able to maintain a little better. Our 450 sq ft apartment in Lahaina is $1500 and that is cheap in comparison. But there are ways to save money like "Happy Hours", Farmers markets, and Costco. Family is the hardest thing... And Vog is something that Noone seems to know about until they get here. Hidden island secrets. HA! We have not had much descrimination.. but there are some little things that we notice. It doesnt bother me though. I just try to be understanding. But honestly... It happens everywhere but "White" people are just not used to it. Even Front Street night life is down. Not much here on island. Thanks for making this. Much Love and Aloha.
About furniture & household items, my daughter moved there recently & got rid of everything to buy new out there, but to replace it was super expensive, delayed delivery & very limited choice of quality & style. New washer/dryer took 2 months. From what they spent, a container would have been much cheaper. Furniture tends to be smaller, lightweight & cost a lot more. Their little couch is already breaking down in the seats & cost as much as my huge couch/loveseat/ottoman set. They couldn’t find a couch that had a normal back, they were all low back height. Also there are things that no one will ship to Hawaii & you just can’t get, which is completely understandable but just know what to expect.
Cockroaches freak me out. I live in Louisiana. My husband and I vacation in Corpus Christi, TX a lot. We bought a couple of palm trees to bring back back home the last time we visited and also brought back cockroaches. We found out they live in palm trees.
One thing I wish I would of done more when I visited Maui was spend more time walking on the beach and catching more of the beautiful sunsets, absolutely magical ☮️
I might be the only one but for me Tucson speaks more to me than Hawaii; I have been to Hawaii on vacation and it is a gorgeous place and I loved the people and the pace, but Tucson seems as beautiful :)
I just came back from Maui..I’m over the idea of maybe trying to retire there..it’s far better to just visit..glad you mentioned everything because it adds up and gets real when figuring out the finances.
I've never been to Hawaii!!it looks so beautiful but I feel like it's so crowded too!I started watching your channel when you lived there...love your channel ...
Yes Medical care brought me back home. To drive to Khehi from Lahaina could take more than a hour or more between 3 and 7. Ridiculous traffic in Lahaina. My 3 mile drive from Honokowai to Front street took 30 minutes. Although it is very expensive I'm planning to move back and purchase a home upcountry instead of living in a condo. It's a very peaceful place for me. 😎🌴🐢🤙
Just thought I'd pop over to say a great big thank you, I received my order and I am so pleased with it, so well made..and also to say I was touched my your hand written thank you note. You can be sure I'll order again soon :)
51 minutes of Christine? I'm in heaven! Thanks for the advice and info on moving to Hawaii. I'd love to move to Oahu in the next few years. I'm working for myself from home and plan to get a condo so this was very helpful info. I've found out I'm part Hawaiian so I gotta move there! I have a question: What made you decide to vacation and move to Maui instead of Oahu?
How are you doing? Did you make the move to Hawaii? I am seriously considering it moving to Hawaii. Dealing with too much analysis right now. It's time to make a decision
Loved this video. Was in Kona recently and a loaf of bread was $5. Everything is expensive. Im in california so its expensive here too but food isnt that much unless you go to whole foods.
Very good information. I had two cuzns live there and thought they were crazy to move back to the main land. All what you say, primarily cost of living and flexibility yo travel back and forth (finamcially) what tjeu said reason for coming back to main land.
Thank you for this video! I was only lucky enough to visit Hawaii last year, and it was such a beautiful experience. I would love to go back one day, I've joked about moving there. The high prices of course make it difficult to do so, but who knows, maybe one day I can retire there. I loved this video and hearing all the pros and cons - my mouth dropped when you said moving could cost up to $10k with a shipping container! I've always wondered how people can manage to live there comfortably, like what careers thrive there etc. For now, I'll just stick to visiting when I can.
My in laws live in Makawao! I hope to move to Hawaii someday! I lived on Oahu when I was a kid for about 4 years and my husband is from there. He’s a hapa 😍 Best place on earth ❤️❤️❤️
Early Squad! I am from Fiji Islands living in California but I miss the island living, mainly tropical fruits. My dream is to own a summer home in Hawaii.
If you are used to surviving on your regular wage now, and your rent is under 1000 dollars, Hawaii is not for you. I love living here, and the price is worth it, for me but the cost of living is very high for one person, or even a couple. 100,000 dollars is low income on oahu
What do you do for a living? I am moving to kailua in the end of this month. I want to take an ultrasound class. Is there any fast career classes and places? Any tips? Anything is helpful.
We moved three times to and from Hawaii. The Military moved us but even that changes but I do believe that it is easier. We lived in military provided housing which is now gone. They provided us a place to live while waiting for a home. We still had to wait for a place and for our household goods to arrive. The average delivery time was 6 weeks. Our children loved growing up there and would go back if they could. We were on Oahu for hurricane Iniki. The bugs were horrible and the centipedes were enormous and rats ran the power lines at night. Would I go back, yes but not to live it is just too expensive.
As beautiful and charming as Hawaii is, quality of life for most is tough as costs are so high. Challenges of Island life where everything has to be flown or shipped in....I am however, looking to visit and see the beauty as I have heard so much about it the islands....so glad you are back honey..
I struck up a conversation with a woman in the airport before my connecting flight and we exchanged contact info. She called one of the days I was there and here and her husband picked me up and we went to the Arizona Memorial together.
I lived there in 2003 (military) after a few months i started feeling trapped cabin fever.....island fever?? 😕 definitely beautiful and would love to go back to visit but not live there.
Loved the video Christine 👍🏻 I don’t plan on moving there, but I would love to spend a few weeks on Maui exploring. I miss your Chickens too! Every time I feed our wild rabbits, I think about you feeding tortillas to the chickens lol!
@ChristineKobzeff Fabulous video so mush valuable information even for people wanting to visit, I think most beach holiday resorts appear to have a heavenly feel when you visit, I know from experience visiting Italy and Malta years ago without a doubt I always want to live there after visiting. When you’re away from home life daily routines you have a false sense of living the perfect life in the place you are visiting, we forget to live there your precious vacation memories fade fast when you live work and pay bills there loll. I loved this video thank you for sharing I look forward and always do to your next one Christine 🏝 😘 ♥️
Thanks for making this awesome video! I'm wondering how long it took you to find your place in Wailuku... we have decided on moving to Wailuku in about a year- year and a half. We've been here in Washington for 3 years, but I am from West Maui, and have never lived on the Wailuku side before, but am excited for a change of scene from the west side! I'm an RN, so my plan is to be close to both the hospital and the clinics, depending on where I get a job. I just wanted to get an idea of how tough it is to get a somewhat affordable place to rent in Wailuku, and if you even predict it possible to line up a place to rent in advance from the mainland (without doing the temporary vacation rental thing). Thanks again! Love all your videos!
Hello, I was out in Hawaii once, it seems great, but after awhile you must get bored. Its kind of like living in a retirement community I think. Although a step up from Florida.
Yeah Hawaii is very nice, but I don't know if it's a step up from Florida. Florida has white baby powder sand and the Florida keys....and you aren't land locked and can travel anywhere by car.. Plus it's extremely cheaper than Hawaii. But no Mountains of course. But the Smokys aren't too far from Florida. I've been on this debate about moving to Maui or Florida and it just seems Florida is a step up from Hawaii in many more ways.
$2,000 is actually not to bad. Maybe it doesn't sound like a lot to me because I live in Florida and everything is over price here! A rent in South Florida for a townhouse is $1,700 or more.
Hey Christine, curious, do you miss living near the ocean/beach? I think moving from any beach area to a landlocked place would drive me crazy. I'm in Florida 4O minutes to the Beach. I'm not sure if I could handle being landlocked again like I was before I moved to Florida. Have you been to any beach since moving back?
urthebest1122 I wonder if they’ve been to a beach since moving, too. I moved from AZ to the west coast close to the ocean and don’t think I ever want to be landlocked again either. It’s life changing being near the ocean for my husband and I. Wonder how they are coping with this as well.
The teeth are looking like a lot of progress has been made ! Have you ever considered not bottle bleaching your hair m, and just it the natural color grow out ?
Sharing my experience of 17 years living on Maui. If you have experience visiting or living in Hawaii please share! xoxo
Would you do anything different?!
@@SuiGenerisAbbie Sounds like you are the one rambling

This was so well thought through and helpful. Thanks Christine appreciate it!!

As beautiful and charming as Hawaii is, quality of life for most is tough as costs are so high. Challenges of Island life where everything has to be flown or shipped in....I am however, looking to visit and see the beauty as I have heard so much about it the islands....so glad you are back honey..
I'm thinking about moving to Maui. Do I need a car or can I make it without one?
I’m new to your channel. I saw previous posts on your succulents when you were in Maui, were you able to bring your succulents n cactus in Arizona?
I struck up a conversation with a woman in the airport before my connecting flight and we exchanged contact info. She called one of the days I was there and here and her husband picked me up and we went to the Arizona Memorial together.
I lived there in 2003 (military) after a few months i started feeling trapped cabin fever.....island fever?? 😕 definitely beautiful and would love to go back to visit but not live there.
Michelle Dennis I honeymooned in Kauai and after a week my husband and I were definitely experiencing island fever lol
J LS yes definitely..i love to drive and go take road trips and i got tired of driving in circles😂
You should correct your post and add the word Mau'i to it cause Hawaii is the big island as well as the state.
Congratulations. Great video 🌹 💐
What about your jewelry collection? Show it us , please...
What about anamanda condor and local taihini area?
Hello form Poland(west Europe)😁i love your vlog
That's for a 2 bedroom townhouse in South Florida.
1,700 in maui is a one room 200 sq ft studio.
Box Jelly fish just love me... ,but ouch!
The teeth are looking like a lot of progress has been made ! Have you ever considered not bottle bleaching your hair m, and just it the natural color grow out ?
