To be accepted by the locals, you really have to give back to the island and it's people, through some sort of volunteerism. Such as the food bank, organized sports, church groups, beach clean up's, etc. If your not willing to do these things, you'll always be an outsider, no matter how much money you have. Kauai is unique in this way. This takes years ,not months. Mahalo
Hey Andrew! The thing is - I never experienced any hate until recently. Everyone I have ever come in contact with has been so warm and kind. I think in my past life I was a talkshow host because I love asking questions and learning about people - so whenever I meet people - I can talk to them forever and get to know them. Like I said - always kind and respectful conversation from both sides. Anyway - hopefully there is peace moving forward ❤️ Thanks for the message
It took me 5-6 yrs to feel like the locals realized I was here to stay. This island should be looked at as and treated as a foreign country. The customs here are personal. ALOHA means something more than just hello. They expect you to know how to connect to each other’s heart through your eyes. It is a magical place that embraces true connections. They know when you’re faking it too and then you get “stink eye”. Not like to many places anywhere else in the world.
This is so funny, the "locals" aren't an indigenous people, most of the local people are a mix of all kinds of Asian and aren't really Hawaiians, I have lived in kauai for about 8yrs and have never felt like "an outsider", like any community, if you work hard and be respectful you'll be fine..
Just respect the people and the island that's all we ask for. Don't feel entitled and we will always take care of you. It's when people come over and feel like they are owed everything from the island. I always talk to visitors when they have questions or need directions or places to go. And main thing drive slow you're on hawaiian time now 😆
Hi I am a native to Kauai..but for the past 4 plus years, I currently live in New Mexico. You are absolutely right with your 10 pros and cons. I Am homesick for Kauai. Am contemplating on moving back to there. Majority of my family still live there too. What is having me to hesitate on moving back are the high rents and cost of living. Mahalo for sharing.
Hi Marla! Yes - the rents & cost of living are so incredibly high - especially compared to New Mexico. I have a friend who moved from Los Angeles to NM because the cost of living in Los Angeles is crazy expensive too. Home prices and rents are on an upward trend at the moment too - which is making things more difficult especially for local families looking for places. The salaries don't keep up with the rise in prices. I hope you can find a way to come back so you can be with family again. That's the hardest part for us - my parents are in MA and my partner's are in Portugal. We feel so far apart sometimes. Mahalo for your input and for watching ❤️
I think moving to a small island like Kauai requires a massive mindset shift. Things like growing your own food, homeschooling your kids, riding an electric bike to get places, etc..is what's needed to succeed there and thrive.
@@Eaglejake Growing your own food because buying it all is so darn expensive; homeschooling your children because Hawaiian public schools are generally terrible, & private schooling is pretty much as expensive as university; I'm not exactly sure about the electric bike one, maybe something about them being strong environmentalists?
Kauai was the first--and so far only--island I have visited in Hawaii. I fell in love and pondered the reality of living there throughout my stay. It very much fits my lifestyle and attitudes. It was strange to realize that, because the place is so small, everything mentioned in the video--the north coast beaches, the large canyon--I saw those exact things. I knew exactly what you were talking about. By the way, I wasn't having trouble with food variety. I had great Japanese food along the south, and there was this excellent Indian food truck near the shopping area along the north coast. They served the best fish curry.
Materialism is a spectrum though... a different pair of shoes/flip flops for everyday of the week is WAY different than multiple luxury vehicles, latest fashion, expensive jewelry, hair extensions, expensive make up, purses and on and on. There’s mild materialism and then there’s MATERIALISM.
10 years ago our best friends sold their large very successful construction business in the New England area and moved to Kauai, both were in the mid-40s and a bit materialistic. They were very well off (McMansion at 600k well off), sold their home, boats, cars, and all their possessions and had a decent amount of money saved and had delusions of living there, and him finding a light job in construction, her something part-time in order to maintain some extra income. Since we had traveled to many of the Islands in the past and knew the costs we tried to warn them, but in their minds, they were going to be fine. They did manage to find a nice home there, for a hefty price and not the standard they are used to. But after 3 years they came back broke and had to start over by renting an apartment back in New England.
Hey Michael! Jeez, that's so sad. What's even more sad are all the families who are born and raised here with many generations before them living here and them not being able to keep up with the rise in prices. Lot of families having to pack up and relocate - mainly to Las Vegas. Some becoming homeless too. Just like the rest of the country - the rise in home prices is truly crazy. So sorry for your friends 💔
I had those same delusions myself, right out of high school 37 years ago! My best friend and I were going to Laverne & Shirley ourselves out to Hawaii, become hula dancers, the whole fantasy. So we sent a letter to some kind of chamber of commerce office to ask about moving there. I still remember what the letter we got back said, "Most people come to Hawaii expecting paradise. You are welcome to come, but please bring enough air fare to get back home." And this was nearly 40 years ago. That slapped us both into reality and the farthest we've gotten to the ocean is the Jersey Shore 😂
Living in California for the last 7 years the prices in HI aren’t a sticker shock for us. I used to live there and we will be moving back. I lived a minimalist lifestyle there and I miss it.
Hey Jeramy - True that you have a more minimalist lifestyle here. CA does have crazy taxes, etc. I don't think CA has anything on food prices and utility bills though. Groceries are definitely way more expensive I've noticed. I miss getting organic strawberries for $5 when we buy non-organic for $8 over here. But - it's worth paying the higher cost of food for all the other amazing things the island has to offer. Thanks for watching ❤️
Buddy Hawaii is wrecked. It’s a methadone clinic now. I’ve been in 2 fights this week with meth addicts just walking home from work. Last one was 30 minutes ago outside the ABC store. If you’re moving back here bring a gun. Oh ya they’re illegal in CA. Unless you’re a pretty girl like this chick and life’s a breeze then you’re in for a real treat when you get back. Good luck.
@@bigmike1850 nah not illegal in CA I got quite a few nice handguns and a rifle. can buy own and possess here if youre over 21 just cant be a felon or a nutcase. no open carry here tho
I come from a Caribbean island and all of your Pros and Cons about Kauai apply to the Caribbean as well. The best, for me would be, if you can afford it and I can’t, is to winter in Hawaii. Great well thought out video, thanks
Looking forward to a six day visit to Kauai in early September of this year, Have never been to the islands before so we are anxious to experience the layed back vibe that you describe. Five days in Honolulu will precede out visit to Kauai, so I am sure we will wlecome the slower pace. Thank you for sharing. The fresh fruit and fish sounds wonderful,
I would say two of the top 3 cons is every gas station on the north shore (all 2 of them) closes at 8pm... and there is no laundromat for the entire north shore either.
Grew up on kauai from age 12. Been here more than 40 years now. Ive seen and done everything. Not old enough to retire but i want to so badly, so we are moving to South Carolina in a few months. This will make it possible to retire young and do some traveling, road trips, see the country. I worry that i will miss kauai but its not going anywhere, ill come back if i need to we’ll see.
I moved from Boulder, Colorado to Koh Samui, Thailand 23 years ago and everything compared to the U.S. is very cheap now my Thai wife and I moved because she wanted to, to Nakhon Sawan and everything has gone up a bit money wise but still much better than the U.S. prices. The whole country is very beautiful and being 66 now love it here and have never gone back to the U.S. I have 4 houses in different parts of Thailand and my first one is on Koh Samui. There are many places that look as good as Hawaii and no reason on earth would I move there. Being a Buddhist country it is very peaceful here and has a very low crime rate and people call it the land of smiles.
Hi David! I have Thailand on my list of places to visit. It looks so incredibly beautiful. I visited Indonesia a few years ago and I was a little disappointed. I loved the people and certain parts of the country, but it had so much trash. The coral reefs were all but gone too due to old fishing techniques where they would use dynamite. From what I hear though - they are trying to clean things up and educate the local people on what dumping trash can do to the land. I hear Thailand is different though in terms of being clean - is that correct? What places would you recommend in Thailand to visit? Would you recommend Koh Samui? Thanks for watching ❤️
my friends from denver just visited thailand and recently decided to move there. much more bang for their buck and they were tired of the rat race in the US.
We've been here on Kaua'i almost a year now! Love it! Everything! completely wrong on the grocery pricing though. We've never come across eggs at $12 lol Also, we learned quickly to put in a switch for the water heater! It will knock $75 off your bill just turning it off when not in use. It stays warm for dishes in between heat-ups. we turn ours on(at fuse box) every few days for 30 minutes. Easy saver for ya here..:)
Hi! I hope my video doesn't come off as I don't like the island, we love it. Just some things to get used to. Maybe as you live here a longer period of time you'll understand some things that can be difficult, but of course the pros outweigh the cons - hence why we are still here. We both have a business and it can be very tough to run a business here for a few different reasons. For instance - my fridge in my rental has been down almost 2 months because even though I have the part - labor is hard to get and be scheduled in. Another big thing is opportunity for kids (not sure if you have kids). My kids are getting really into chess, robotics, etc and it's hard to find those things for them on island. With regard to groceries - we've noticed the prices have lowered a bit, but eggs at Foodland still range from $8-$11 for a dozen. Of course you can pay that for 2 dozen at Costco though and even farmers markets can have cheaper eggs. Definitely ways to save, but a really huge price difference from everywhere we've lived. Anyway, welcome to the island! It truly is a magical place ❤️🌺
Hello ma’am! I’m moving to Kauai next month to be with my partner and her family. They live in Koloa. I really appreciate your list, I know it’s been up for about two years but I imagine jts still pretty relevant. I’ll possibly be looking into HDOT for employment because I noticed the roads could use a bit of repair last time I visited. I really don’t have anything lined up yet, but I have some skills and good work ethic to bring with me. I can appreciate others with their island time because it opens the doors more for me (I’m moving from inland empire California where everything is cutthroat) If I see you and recognize you I’ll be sure to say hi!
Hi! Thanks so much for watching! I'm planning on uploading more content for sure! Working on a new video as we speak. What part of the island are you thinking?
@@YourHostJ North shore!! You sold it so well haha. We want to get in the dirt and help people working on permaculture projects, growing food and caring for nature. I've found a few volunteer opportunities up there that look great. Have you met some farmers through the farmers markets?
Hey Tom! I've never been to Tennessee, but I did have a boyfriend from there for a couple of years and he'd talk about the mountains as well. They must be beautiful. Thanks for your comment and for watching ❤️
Was on Kuai in 1984 being from England UK it was an incredible experience, would love to know how much it has changed since that time, lihue Airport was amazing, picking up the hire car as part of the condo stay, knew the island was not that big, guy asked me what car would you like, i said give me the biggest flashiest car you got 😂😂 he shouted his helper, this beautiful car came out in front of us, great memories 👌😊
Hi I would like to reply to your question about living on Kauai back in 1984 well I also was on the island back then and there was only 15 to 20,000 people there then and now there's over 70,000 people I think that's enough said to let you know what the heck is going on over there it really sucks I understand people want to live someplace nice but the rainforests are being destroyed years ago there was no homeless people up and down the streets of Honolulu now it's normal that should not be normal and they're all local families I was there when the drugs flocked into the islands people used to hang at the beach and just drink beers and have a good time and camp that's not happening anymore it really sucks I wish we could turn back the clock but that doesn't happen either good luck to you Paradise gone
@@kuuipo626arthur4 wow that is a big difference, think the Olympic games were that year in LA, used a product manufactured in Hawaii called grab a tan, that was a great product, enjoy your life there its beautiful.
Hi, visited Kauai back in 2005, first time ever in Hawaii, stayed at Pali ke kua in Princeville. Absolutely had a wonderful time. I plan to come back for a visit again, beaches, golf courses etc. Such a relaxed vibe and people were so nice. I imagine of course living there has its challenges but I can see why you stay. I'm from Florida but lived a decade in Los Angeles myself, Burbank area so I can relate. Thanks the information and I'll be checking out your other videos.
Hey Spencer! Thanks so much for the kind comment! I have a feeling a lot has changed on the island since 2005. A lot has changed in the just the past 8 years. But yes, Kauai is a magical place and be sure to write me if you have any questions before visiting. Thanks again ❤️
@@YourHostJ Thanks J for responding to my post, I will definitely write before I visit again one day. Was considering the 1 Hanalei bc ate there when it was still Princeville resort and such a great location and views but prices are pretty steep so might revisit Pali ke kua condos. Lol thanks again and I'm subscribed to your channel so I'll look forward to watching more. Take care, Spencer
Hi Adriana! I did end up making a video about making the move. You can find it here: th-cam.com/video/AC3wlsK1UmE/w-d-xo.html Thanks so much for watching! ❤️
Mahalo for sharing these points. I am a big fan of Kauai and look forward to my next trip. Always a dream to live there but I think it will remain as my special and most beloved travel destination instead. So looking forward to the next visit!!! Especially Tahiti Nuis!
Very good video. Good pros and cons. Medical/health care should be a main consideration before moving to Hawaii, especially if not Oahu. Health care is expensive everywhere but another necessity and cost of life. Consider your personal health. How often do you visit your primary care physician? How many times do you visit a specialist? How about five years from now. If you live outside Oahu and need a medical specialist, you may have to get an appointment, fly to Oahu, find ground transportation and get a hotel room if your timing is off. There is only one level one trauma center in Hawaii which is on Oahu. If you need major emergency care, you’ll need an air ambulance. I don’t know the cost for an air ambulance, but a nine mile, 15 minute ground ambulance on Oahu cost over $1,000. Everyone should have medical insurance anyway but if you live on Kauai, Maui, Molokai, Lanai or the island of Hawaii you should check if air ambulance flights are covered. We love Kauai but live on Oahu. I was fortunate to have been born in Hawaii, raised in Hawaii, traveled the world, lived in Japan and Europe. Hawaii has always been a beautiful, expensive place to live. The cost of living here will continue to increase so factor that into your decision. Costs have dramatically increased in the last three years. If you can “just about afford it” now how will you afford it in three years? This is not meant to be a big negative for living in Kauai. If you are seriously thinking of moving to Kauai and think you can “just about afford it”, be sure to have an emergency fund to cover the always unexpected emergencies. Wish you the best of luck.
Oh i think that emergency plane ride is a heck of a lot more expensive than 1,000. Personally i pay the local company a 60 dollar fee per year for me and hubby, in the event that there is an emergency the flight will be fully covered. Check it out.
Thank you so much for sharing this. I’m moving to Oahu 10/1 because that where is where my job will be. Fortunately, with my career, I can go anywhere, so I’m looking into Kauai within a year. When I was on Kauai a few years ago I loved it. I’m from the LA are originally, have lived in Vegas, and now I’m in a small town. I prefer the later, so this was bwry informational. Again, thank you
While stationed at KMCAS on Oahu in 1983, we went to Kauai to count whales from a Navy ship. Each of the islands are The Most Beautiful place on the planet
We have spent October on the North Shore for many years, though those years are long gone. You get up at 5am and walk to Kee, with the Milky Way hanging bright over your head, reminding you of the universe and your speck in it. You take a shower on the side of the house when you return, and then lift hand weights for awhile. A breakfast, and you take your backpack and head up the beach, in shorts, to the point above Tunnels and drop your chair and read and watch and muse. You might drop the pants and walk into the water up to your chin, or snorkle for awihile, scooping up the shells. About 3pm, you drive into Hanalei, and get some fresh fish at the Dolphin for dinner. Dinner is on the porch which lasts to bedtime, and you do it over again and again and, for some of us, you never get bored of it. But it is an island in the middle of the Pacific, and there must always be an end, a time to come home to the real world. Of course, if you have trained for it, you take the pack and and walk the Kalalau Trail, nine miles of Nam jungle, to the Valley where you take a shower at the waterfall and lay down on the sand exhausted and listen to the combers roll in. And you can go up to the canyon and trek into the swamp to get to the rim overlooking Hanalei Bay. The South Shore sucks, for the tourists. You can hike or attempt to drive the old mud road that cuts from Princeville across the mountain to the South side, or hike through the old water tunnels, or visit the old estates of the interlopers who took ownership of most of the land. Just after crossing the first bridge on the road to Kee, there is a tiny market stand. Behind it, there is a a gate, which with permission from the market guy, you can hike into the last undeveloped valley which won''t last forever, past the water falls to the top where the river springs. But the North Shore is for you when you are young (under 60) and want to live in a state of nature. Of course, the money kings have long since taken possession of the beach front lots, and have high fences along the road, so all that is left is Peggy Slaughter's houses now owned by someone else. One thing though. When you buy the expensive produce at the Hanalei farmer's market, and you drive into town and park and leave the vehicle unlocked, the homeless will steal what you bought in the five minutes you are gone. Park your vehicle at Kee and leave it for the day, and the windows might be broken when you return. In the very old days, back when there was no traffic light at Hanalei, when the dogs laid in the roadway at night and refused to move, and you are lit from the drinks at Tahiti Nui, you might have driven to Tailor's Camp and partied with the Naked Hippies from San Francisco all night.
Yes, Kaui'i is an incredibly beautiful island with fantastic beaches! But the cost of living is insanely expensive! It takes a certain kind of person to live in Hawaii; the lifestyle is not for everyone. Nice review!
Hey Jim! You're correct for sure. It's a lot of sacrifice to live on such a beautiful island due to its high cost of living, but we've been happy doing so 😊 Thanks so much for watching ❤️
Hello! I know this is a 3yr old video, but hearing you’re from MA and were able to live on Kauai for so long, you’re living out my dream! I’m 22 and lived in MA my whole life but trying to leave it all behind and make it to Kauai as a marine biologist. Can I ask how you were able to make it happen?
May be worth investing in a $1500 Ecowave Delta power pack and a couple solar panels off Amazon.. You can recharge it in 1.5 hours from the wall and not even bother with solar panels if need be.You would recoup the cost in no time. You can run lights, TV, small heater or fan.etc and reduce hydro bills. Portable unit.
I feel like farmer's markets can be a mixed bag. Sometimes I'll find deals and other times not. I think as stands get to you know you better and you go weekly - you'll get those discounts.
Love your videos! I’m looking to move to Kauai in the next year. Just started my own channel (mostly to inspire myself to keep that vision clear.) Thanks for sharing your experience!!!
I definitely will make a video on how I made Kauai happen. I can only speak for Kauai - but finding a job is actually pretty easy. There are so many job openings right now. I'll cover these topics in that video.
Thanks so much for watching, William! Thanks for the compliment as well ❤️ My mother always said - if life ever went South for me - I could always get into radio 😂 Thanks again
"J & Family" - Oooh, this clip was 24k gold, even though you posted two years ago. FWIW - I live on the Island of Madeira, Portugal = approx 400 miles West and off the Coast of Morocco. I ran a comparative against my current 4,000 sqft. home with those for sale on Kauai today (July, 2023). I am still reeling and pacing from the data. I lived and worked on Kauai back in 1996. I never needed (years), money or volunteering to assimilate into Kauai culture. I was a rabid Spear Fisherman and always showed up to every cook-out with a coolah choke full of Lobstah Brah. Worked every time. I also gravitated to Pidgeon naturally and with ease. I worked with a Guy named Ollie from Guam and I couldn't understand a single word he said at first. After nine months of employment, I'll never forget leaving with tears in my eyes knowing I could understand his every word upon my departure. Three families showed up to the airport when I waved "Goodbye" and headed back to the Mainland to finish my undergrad. We all had tears in our eyes. I always wanted to go back and still considering my options. Kauai and Hawaiian culture felt like Home and Family as early as two weeks after my arrival there, (not years). Years to assimilate, indicates a culture in direct conflict with how your values, morals and approaches are alligned with who you are and your strategy to help, fit in and serve the newly adopted community. Again, thank you. FWIW - finding Qualified Labor for A/C, plumbing, electrical, etc. in Portugal = is virtually impossible AND none speak a single word of English. Not one. Amazon Prime Euro deliveries takes week(s), not a 5 to 7 day span. Cool Breezes to you and yours.
I was born, raised and lived on Kauai 1971-1991, Oahu 1991-2000, Washington 200-present, one thing to keep in mind is not to irritate and piss off anybody and everything will be alright.
You just answered my last question! You live in Washington now. But yes, be kind in most places in the world and you'll be alright. I grew up in a city in MA and so it's the same there - don't piss off anyone and you'll be alright 😂
Sometimes I’d just like to take a road trip and a short flight to Europe or up the coast. Sometimes I’d like to wear layers. Sometimes I’d like to buy groceries without having a panic attack. Kauai is beautiful but many places are. They wont look like kauai but beautiful in their own way. I haven’t flown to Maui in over twenty years because the round trip flight, car rental and hotel for a 3 day stay would cost well over 1,000.00 not including food and entertainment.
Just got back from Thanksgiving with my daughter/granddaughter at her place on Kauai. It was so cold and rainy- totally weird. Not too crowded in Kapaa but traffic was terrible, they really should reduce cars and improve the highways- especially between Kapaa and Lihue. I live in Honolulu, more to do here. I bought a $41 pizza at Diamond Pizza, but it was good.
Yes! The traffic has been terrible for quite a few years! The county need to do something about that for sure. Yes - it's definitely been pretty rainy, but the island is constantly unpredictable for weather - even in the summer. $41 pizza?! Wow! Similar prices I guess. Thanks for your comment and for watching ❤️
Aloha - Thanks for the video..... First time to Kauai in March 2020.... right about the time when they started the permits for the beach and fines for being out after curfew... got a little nervous when people were yelling to us to ‘Go home’... It’s was a crazy time - Just glad to get out when we could. Looking forward to making the the ‘Covid Revenge Tour 😉’ when things get settled. Been to Maui 4 times and all over the island.... Looking forward to coming back and just relax with the local chickens that crow when they like ❤️👍🏻. Love Hawaii
Aloha! Thanks for watching! 😂 I like that - Covid Revenge Tour. Yeah, there was a lot of stress and angry people in March. I think everyone was just so uncertain of what was happening and weren't sure how the virus spread that they were afraid of getting our Kapuna (elderly) sick. Probably could've found a better way than yelling and screaming at tourists. I'm sure Hawaii will welcome you with more Aloha when you return. Again, thanks for watching!
Awesome video! Very helpful! Our family is strongly considering the move. Planning another visit next year. Keep up the good work and thanks for the great content!
Hi Phil! Thank you so much for watching and sending the positive message ❤️ I am glad I helped provide you with a little insight. Everyone's experiences are different though and when you plan your next visit - try to stay as long as you can so you may truly get a feel on what day to day life may possibly be. That's what we did. Thanks again for watching and Happy New Year!
Hi Ma'at! Yes - I knew about the spider, but I just learned about the scorpions recently. I had no idea! But those are venomous creatures (like the centipede) and not poisonous - thankfully! 😂
I love Kauai and found your video interesting. I imagine cost of living would be lower on the west side (Kekaha or Waimea?) compared to the north. I really love the food there but maybe the lack of quality variety might wear on me. The best Mai Tai's are on that island though. All very subjective. I think Big Island might offer more choices? I also wonder about the native-transplant-haole "thing" that runs deep with certain folks. Thanks for the informative post - very well done!
Thanks so much for watching! Yes, in terms of housing, the homes and rental prices are cheaper, but everything else seems to be pretty similar. The lack of variety definitely gets to me, but I'm a dual citizen to Portugal, so I travel there every year and that helps break things up. Many people have mentioned"racism" from locals, but I've never experienced it. I've seen some people get disgruntled against tourists, but that's when people visit and aren't respectful to the local culture and land.
What you said about appliances is true right now, mostly due to the pandemic. Manufactures all over the country are behind. Also, cheaper to replace than repair in most cases. I just bought a new washer $808 delivered from HD. Needed my garage door fixed, repairman was here the next morning. Put in new A/C and was done in a week. Most of the building trades are slammed right now and 6 to 8 weeks out to even get estimates on some jobs. Eggs, food, I understand you said your on the N. shore, but Costco trip a few times a month is worth the savings IMO. Costco prices maybe 5% more on most items vs mainland. I agree with all of your 10 pro's so worth it to live here and get used to Island time. Great video! Aloha
Yes, Costco is definitely the saving grace! I have a large freezer box in my garage and try to buy lots of things that I can freeze. The only problem is trying to eat items that are fresh. I love veggies and fruits, but if I buy Costco size portions of either one, they will end up going to waste because we can't go through them so quickly and I hate throwing away food. I ordered my washing machine Sept 8th and still waiting for an update. I know everything is delayed and the pandemic has slowed things down even further, but even before the pandemic I felt like I was waiting a lifetime for things. As a society we always want things "fast and now" and I hate to admit, that I'm still getting used to not having that. I'm getting better though 😂 Again, thanks for watching!
You are so on point...thx for sharing these. I grew up on O'ahu, got rock fever, and needed the world, so I moved to NYC years ago. Each year (each winter I should say), I start to think about life back home. So then I contemplate whether or not Honolulu is just right with it's options and urban energy. Or am I really seeking the sort of tranquility that an island like Kauai offers at this point in my life? Hmmmm. Things to ponder. Thx again...
Hi Jim! Thanks for your input. Wow - Oahu to NYC. That's a big change on so many levels. I was born, raised, and spent most of my life in MA so I know that East Coast winter! No place is perfect - but Kauai has been amazing in so many ways. It's especially been perfect for raising our children. I know it's not realistic for many people, but if you are able to travel even once a year - I think that helps with the island fever. I appreciate the positive message - you should see the comments TH-cam automatically withholds because the comments don't fit within their guidelines (basically hateful comments) about my videos. Yikes! 😬 😂 So I appreciate the kind words from someone who was raised on Oahu. Thanks for watching! ❤️
Been in Kauai for 3 years now and u had all great points. I feel like island fever hits harder here cuz its way more rural than the bigger islands. Ready to move this summer tho, ready to get back to better pay, more opportunities and just a standard of life im used to. 😃🤙🏾
Hey Jennifer! Thanks so much for watching! Yes - island fever is hitting us hard right now 😂 We usually spend our summers in Portugal to visit our family and try to celebrate Christmas & New Year somewhere - but both those opportunities have come and gone. We are itching to travel soon. Hopefully we get back to semi-normal by the kid's next school vacation time so we can go anywhere - just somewhere 😂 I feel you on the opportunity side of things. We talk about that when it comes to our kids as they get older. From small things like being involved in things they are interested in - whether it's robotics or chess - to bigger things like job opportunities in the future. We'll see where the wind takes us. I wish you luck on your future. Thanks again for watching! ❤️
Hi Tigran! Thanks so much for watching! I already made a video about how I made the move to Kauai! You can find it here: th-cam.com/video/AC3wlsK1UmE/w-d-xo.html Thanks again for watching and subscribing! ❤️
Thanks for the helpful content! I'm visiting Kaua'i this summer in an official capacity as chaperone for some jhs kids from Japan. I clicked this to get an idea of grocery prices because we'll be responsible for most of our own meals. Needless to say, Kauai sounds expensive! Trying to figure out what's best for ten hungry kids visiting for two weeks...
My company has a customer in Kauai. I worked with them on the phone and via WebEx yesterday. They mentioned they are looking to hire someone with my skill set. I immediately went into fantasy mode and looked into what it might be like to live in Kauai. Very nice video! Thank you.
Thanks, Greg for watching! ❤️ It is a beautiful island, but since I made this video - home/rental prices have gone through the roof! I guess so has the rest of the country, but another thing to add to the list 😊
Hi Mama SITA! I think that depends on the person because the parts of the island are all so different and everyone has their own taste - but in my opinion - I say the North Shore ❤️ Thanks for watching!
Hi Caila - it is obnoxious and I don't think any company should have a monopoly on anything. It's ridiculous we are forced to deal with a specific company. Maybe Starlink is the future and will help give us more internet options.
Thank you for sharing your Kauai experience. I think the number one issue for me is home price. It's just too expensive. A decent ~1,000 SQ ft 3 bed 2 bath is about $700-800k.
Hi! You're definitely right. Prices are getting crazy high on island and it's making it more and more difficult to make a living here because the pay doesn't match the home prices. This is the same on Oahu. I'm lucky I bought our home 7 years ago and it was a short-sale so got it at a discount. If I were shopping around today - not sure we could make it happen. Thanks for watching ❤️
Thanks for the info! My husband and I are thinking about moving there. He's originally from Honolulu, so there's the natural pull there (but not interested in fast-paced city-life, hence, Kauai). At this point it's a toss-up between Kauai and Bonaire (by Aruba). I think more vacations are going to be necessary to help us to make up our minds. :-D
Hey Julie! I totally agree - vacation in both spots, but try to see what true day-to-day living is like. When we visited Kauai before moving here, we tried to do all the things we'd normally do back home while here - if that makes sense. So, eating and cooking at home, work life, drove by the school in the morning to see what bringing the kids to school would be like, etc. Try to snap out of the daydreaming side of it 😂 I wish you luck on your journey. I'm sure whatever choice you make will be perfect ❤️ Thanks for watching.
Not sure how anyone could live in Kauai and work. A good friend's wife relocated to Kauai, so he quit his job and they moved. She started working right away, (both in in healthcare) and he grew a beard, fished, ate fruit. After 6 months she said, "You know honey, this is not a vacation for you... get a job."
Im hapa, a single father and adopted and I have no opportunities if i move to the islands. But ive cleaned every beach ive seen and id love a chance to be living on kauai. any links lemme know
To be accepted by the locals, you really have to give back to the island and it's people, through some sort of volunteerism.
And main thing drive slow you're on hawaiian time now 😆
Beach cleanup is a good thing that most people can do.
Most beautiful island! Been there 7 times and each time it feels like the first time. Love the locals, the culture and honesty everything about it.
It is a very magical place and the people are wonderful ❤️ Thanks for watching
Grew up in Hanalei in the 70’s. In Texas now. Went back to visit while thinking about moving back. Tourists have wrecked it.
I think moving to a small island like Kauai requires a massive mindset shift. Things like growing your own food, homeschooling your kids, riding an electric bike to get places, etc..is what's needed to succeed there and thrive.
You're absolutely right. Thanks for watching ❤️
or best idea dont have kids lol
@@ethandumas6937 Hey Ethan! But they are so damn cute! 😂 Thanks for watching ❤️
Don t need any of that. We have Costco, Safeway, Wal-Mart, Target. Lol
I am born and raised on Kauai. As much as I like traveling, I will always live here.
i lived in many countries on 3 continents and I 100% agree with you!
I disagree about the materialistic part.
I personally have a pair of slippah’s for everyday of the week.
😂 Touché
That's insane
@@ChicagoGuy77 I live in Pittsburgh PA. I'd sleep on the Beach with My Dog if I had to. The fresh fruits and veggies alone..
I come from a Caribbean island and all of your Pros and Cons about Kauai apply to the Caribbean as well. The best, for me would be, if you can afford it and I can’t, is to winter in Hawaii. Great well thought out video, thanks
Great video. Very informative! Love the timbre and cadence of your voice. Like a lullaby. I could listen to it all day.
Thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️
definitely, please do a video on how you pull it together and what had to be done to make a move to Kauai happen!
Yes! I have always said I should open a laundromat in the North Shore. It's SO needed!
Yes please talk more about Kauai and how you got there etc. Thanks!
I’ve been thinking about moving to Kauai in a few months, buying a route business. Any tips or advice? Thanks
@@dcampbell_8 route business?
@@dcampbell_8 yeah what's that?
"on Kauai"
I was late when I was born so living on Kauai works for me😊
Oh please. Very peaceful place, Thailand, where parents sell their children into prostitution. Lovely. How Buddhist.
Thank you for sharing, it's nice to know everybody experiences the same normal situations in their own version of 'Paradise'...😉👍
Thank you for the video! Kauai is now next on my to visit list!
Awesome! You'll love it!
Same
I asked a native if they like living in Hawaii. He said he’d love to get up and put on a sweater sometimes.
Absolutely adore Princeville!!!
Ditto! Thanks for watching!
That's expensive... beautiful, but expensive.
I just stumbled across your video. I'm a long time resident of the north shore. You nailed it (:-).
Hey Michael! Thanks for watching and the kind comment 🙂❤️
Very helpful video. I’m thinking about visiting soon
Thank you 😊
Hi! This was great - my partner and I are moving to Kauai soon. Thanks for the glimpse into your experience, would love to see more videos.

@Pancake - why do you say that?
The mountains remind me of Southern Appalachia here in Tennessee. Love greenery.
Hey Tom! I've never been to Tennessee, but I did have a boyfriend from there for a couple of years and he'd talk about the mountains as well. They must be beautiful. Thanks for your comment and for watching ❤️
What solar options for your house or even Starlink for the internet ??? Ever look into those ?

You're welcome and thanks so much for watching! We can always use some great nurses ❤️

What a beautiful ode to the North Shore. Thank you, the dogs sleeping in the middle of the road wasn't too long ago.
We still have to vacation on Kauai. But as a tradesman close to retirement , It sounds like I could be helpful and keep busy there.

If you're living living on the north shore you are doing financially well. Excellent!
Sounds awesome. You’re living the life
It's definitely a beautiful island ❤️
Love Hawaii
Meant to say “Aloha from Maine”
Interesting !!
I have lived here for 52 years and have always lived it and went with the flow of the downsides !!
Just went on vacation here. Everything you say rings true!
Thanks for watching, Vern and your input ❤️
im from Pittsfield mass. And headed to Kauai for the first time in may 2024
Awesome video!
Thank you for this honest video.
Yes please. My sister and her husband sold everything they owned, including jewelry 21 years ago to move there. What did you have to do?
Hi Jane! I made a video about my journey here: th-cam.com/video/AC3wlsK1UmE/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for watching! ❤️
Thank u for your nicely delivered lists
So nice of you to say. Thank you for watching ❤️
Actually along with the centipedes, there are scorpians about 1.5 in long and black widows. Ive seen both in Polihale
Hi Ma'at! Yes - I knew about the spider, but I just learned about the scorpions recently. I had no idea! But those are venomous creatures (like the centipede) and not poisonous - thankfully! 😂
@@YourHostJ Indeed. They pop outta nowhere. Watch your toesies 💛❤💛
Thank you ❤️ I do always look in my shoes before putting them on.
Yes, tell us how you got to Kauai.
Hey Sharon! I made a video on it: th-cam.com/video/AC3wlsK1UmE/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for watching!
I'm guessing by plane ;)
A grand for studio is actually not bad. A studio in the Bay Area is well over 2k.
I love Kauai. If I could afford to live there, I would.
I'm getting better though 😂
Again, thanks for watching!
Hey have you ever been to Maui, Big Island, or Oahu before?
Hopefully we get back to semi-normal by the kid's next school vacation time so we can go anywhere - just somewhere 😂
I feel you on the opportunity side of things. We talk about that when it comes to our kids as they get older. From small things like being involved in things they are interested in - whether it's robotics or chess - to bigger things like job opportunities in the future.
We'll see where the wind takes us. I wish you luck on your future. Thanks again for watching! ❤️
10:44 did they get Fiber internet anywhere out there yet?
Hey Eric! Nope - still waiting on that promise.
Yes please, we would love to hear that story
Hi Tigran! Thanks so much for watching! I already made a video about how I made the move to Kauai! You can find it here: th-cam.com/video/AC3wlsK1UmE/w-d-xo.html
Thanks again for watching and subscribing! ❤️
Thanks for the helpful content! I'm visiting Kaua'i this summer in an official capacity as chaperone for some jhs kids from Japan. I clicked this to get an idea of grocery prices because we'll be responsible for most of our own meals. Needless to say, Kauai sounds expensive! Trying to figure out what's best for ten hungry kids visiting for two weeks...
bring a costco card
My company has a customer in Kauai. I worked with them on the phone and via WebEx yesterday. They mentioned they are looking to hire someone with my skill set. I immediately went into fantasy mode and looked into what it might be like to live in Kauai.
Very nice video! Thank you.
Thanks, Greg for watching! ❤️ It is a beautiful island, but since I made this video - home/rental prices have gone through the roof! I guess so has the rest of the country, but another thing to add to the list 😊
Kauai is so beautiful!!
It sure is! 🌺
Which side of Kauai is more beautiful breathtaking?
Hi Mama SITA! I think that depends on the person because the parts of the island are all so different and everyone has their own taste - but in my opinion - I say the North Shore ❤️ Thanks for watching!
I’d like to see a video of different areas of your Island around north shore
Hey Devin! I see you found my other video. Thanks for watching ❤️
Thank you. I was wondering is there any beach front hotels in the area or should we rent a house/condo if we are visiting for a week?
We only have spectrum in NY as well. And our electric is currently monopolized now too. So I felt that one. Most obnoxious thing.
Double that now...
After 6 months she said, "You know honey, this is not a vacation for you... get a job."
Very good list. Can you do an update for 2023?
Im hapa, a single father and adopted and I have no opportunities if i move to the islands. But ive cleaned every beach ive seen and id love a chance to be living on kauai. any links lemme know
Watching from Oahu! Great video
Thank you! ❤️
You said so many beautiful things you fell in love with your words
I knew this was an older video. The prices you’re giving for everything is what it is in Philadelphia, Pa area in June 2022.
Yes - Kauai prices are absolutely outrages right now - if you can even find a place! Thanks for watching ❤️
Thanks for this!!! I am raising capital to move!
You're welcome, Gustavo! Thanks for watching!
Your vlogs are interesting and informatic, great work
Hey Kavin! Thanks so much ❤️ Glad you enjoy my videos.
