How fun to include Alyssa! We bought a used 2019 Etron last year with low miles after listening to Kyle’s advice. Like Alyssa, we love all the comfort, total quiet- yes bank vault and rocking sound system! Room for our 2 Goldens! Charging at home is super easy. She added a good perspective to the podcast. We look forward to more with her. Thank you guys😄
I always enjoy Alyssa’s opinion and participation in these videos. However, I really miss Francie. She had real gift for hosting and did a terrific job researching and presenting each topic. I’d love to know what she moved onto and if it’s in the EV industry.
I bought a 2024 Y long distance (Hardware 4) in July, because of $11K off between Fed & MA discounts. I came from a Subaru Forester, and after 6000 miles, I have come to love the Y. Initially, did not like visibility via the mirrors, very hard to see looking back. It seemed big and I could not "feel" how close I was to curb, other cars, etc. I have learned to appreciate cameras and Autopark. With FSD, started using it mostly as cruise control as it steers better than a driver, tho yes, it does not see potholes, and speed and positioning in traffic less good. Eventually, used FSD (v.12.5.6.3 is a game changer!) from Boston to Queens, NY - shockingly good, tho in heavy rain it needed me to drive. I just drove to eastern Mass on FSD door to door, there and back. I fiddled with chill, standard and hurry modes, as well as using the steering wheel adjuster to tune speed parameters. Driver monitoring is a pain, but it does force you to be attentive, which after all, is it's purpose. Can't wait for FSD v.13! It took me some time, (which Alyssa did not have) but I've come to love the Y. The 3 is too low for me, I don't like sedans, and I dislike the 3 back glass design for New England (fill your trunk with snow!) No complaints on Y ride comfort. I also think some Juniper upgrades were put in late 2024 Y's with Hardware 4, but I am looking forward to the refresh. I don't think the Y deserves to be trashed quite as much as you guys did, sounds like older ones are worse? I'm with Kyle's mom re: the Y. The Fed discount will likely be gone by date of Juniper refresh, but I can always trade up...
I agree with Alyssa. I had a 2023 Model 3 Performance and had to get rid of it right away (during covid, so no money lost). I couldn't stand the road noise, rough suspension, rattles, phantom braking with autopilot, lane changes canceling autopilot, no Android Auto, and awful Tesla customer service. I am so much happier with my Q8 etron. The quietness, ride comfort, etc is pretty much unmatched and that is really all I care about for 99% of driving.
First, more Alyssa is always welcome! I value her perspective on whatever car is being discussed. As a MYP owner, her comments are spot-on, except I’ve grown to love the car over time. It’s far from perfect, and our other daily driver (an I-Pace) offers a superior driving experience. But every car on the road comes with some collection of compromises and we bought the Y for utility, not to be the ultimate driving machine. For us, the combination of Tesla’s SW, the stereo system, and the space (including the frunk which we use all the time) outweighs the crappy ride and handling, at least at its price point. Give it a better suspension and more NVH refinement and it’d be a home run. As it is today, I think it’s still the best value in its price segment.
I have a 5 month old, Model Y AWD. This car works for me, because my wife likes it (we're a one car household), she doesn't have to go to a gas station ever. My parents are about 200 miles north of us, while my in-laws are about 200 miles south of us. If driven at 65mph, regardless of the weather, as long as we start from our home at 100%, and the cabin is pre-heated and battery is at a nice temperature too, we will always reach at either of our parent's house within 3.5 hours, and not needing a pee-break or a charging stop. It also fits very nicely two young kids in car seats, and one very cuddly cat whole loves to hang in my wife's lap and laying directly on top of my kids. Not to mention auto-pilot, which makes the journey nearly painless. We're in Virginia Beach, and have taken longer trips (we don't do more than 1000 mile road trips, just fly at that point), and charging to 80% gives us about 170-200 miles, while the first leg gives us about 250-275 miles, pretty good, considering our trunk and frunk are usually fully loaded on longer trips with kid stuff and our own clothes. We have one more kid in the next few months and are thinking of adopting a dog, at which point we're either going for the big Kia electric, or a minivan. As to Alyssa's point, I don't like the Model Y, but till now, it has literally been the perfect car according to my wife, and she's the one who does majority of daily driving, dropping and picking me from work during the week, and me driving during the weekends.
Well, you would have to let your wife try out different option to compare it to. Say an etron, or a Lyriq . Then she may or may not find the Y to be so perfect.
We have a 2022 Model Y long range with 50,000 miles on it now. We bought it new. No rattles, love driving it. Suspension is rough but not that bad. Just got the Christmas software update, amazing! Driving on long trips is great especially the charging! Best car I’ve owned. I’m 82 years old. Thanks for the video though. Very informative!…but not how I feel.
I have a 2022 Model Y Performance and it's been amazing. Great camping vehicle I can carry my folding ebike without putting down the back seats and it was great sleeping in it this past summer. I had a Model 3 LR before, it was fun but I needed more space and utility. Sure if you want an around town car, Model 3 is great. But when you want to go camping or take your bike somewhere or hook up a cooler, M3 is garbage and you'll wish you had a MY. These people have driven $100,000 + cars... of course the Model Y is junk for them.
@@Streeknine Completely agree! Great take. They don't give the Y enough credit. The 3 is a great car, but I need the space of the Y. It's significantly better for me than the 3.
I have to agree with Alyssa. I was all set to buy a MY and then my neighbor who previously owned one told me to go on Turo and rent one for a week to see how I would like one after it has been broken in! I have to say the firm ride and squeaks and rattles annoyed the hell out of me and my OCD. I was turned off after that experience and now I am waiting to see if the Juniper refresh will address those issues otherwise I may just wait for the Cayenne Electric.
My first EV was a used 2019 model 3 long range plus. Had lots of buggy issues and didn’t enjoy it. Then got a brand new 2024 model Y long range AWD. Got it in February, 18k miles on it now. However we traded in the wife’s SUV for a Kia EV9 and WOW - what a massive difference. It’s bigger and drives far better than our Y
We just traded our Model Y to get a Mach-e. Nice to buy a car from a company that has always been a car company and knows how to build cars. Done with Tesla.
Huh. Interesting. Is this just a no tesla thing or do you find the Mach-E better? On paper, I'd be surprised to think of many things the ford does better (maybe interior/UI choices or if you like the styling, fair). What do you like more about it?
@@karlwolf2 Yes, double the price is no exaggeration and a rediculous comparison. For most, price is everything, the Model Y in Australia where I live is a cheap EV, only slightly above the Chinese EVs. Cybertruck is also incredibly expensive in comparison and has numerous negatives.
Same feeling about the Y suspension. Going over RR tracks, it rides like an old Chevy Nova. As upposed to a well tuned German car that can literally climb a curb without you noticing. Yes, tires, performance, an extra ton of batteries all make a difference. But the suspension on a Y is just totally unimpressive at the price. Even a ten year old Lincoln is smoother.
the longer cars also tend to be really used trade-ins and one I got had a sticker saying it was bought back due to lemon law. You may want to test drive a current model to see if its the same.
It is a lttle funny to see how strong the opinion of Alyssa is about the model Y. It reminds me strong of my wife, when we are looking for an EV, which she insisted to do. I first fall in love with a Model 3 performance while doing a testdrive. Also the kids did. But she did not like it at all and even refuse to test drive it. So we were looking for an alternative, at this time there were not many, especially if you consider the price. (2019) Thankfully that has changed. PS. When a VW calls for an Oil change it is calling for inspection/service. I would not call it bad software, only old fashioned/confusing way to say it. In particular for an EV. Kyle is totally right when he said VW has not a good use of space anymore. They have lost there way. The Golf I was a wonder of useing space at the time it came out. And it saved the brand at this Time. It was truly the car for the pepole, which Volkswagen literally means. VW has to do it again. Apparently Tesla has become this in the EV world.
Same here. I rec teslas to everyone bc it’s just easy to use. But I can’t stand the ride, noise, squishy seats or fast steering of MY. Like Kyle said, I gives me a headache from it.
This has been known and should be discussed more. People always ask "Why anything other than a Tesla?" - but then go on and on about how rough their suspension is, squeaks and rattles, road noise; things that are uncommon in other brands EVs.
I just bought Model Y a month and a half ago. First thing I noticed was how rough the suspension is too. My explanation is it feels like I drive a skateboard. My previous car was not even an expensive car, just a regular Toyota SUV, and it was way more comfortable than Model Y. I admit that I did not test drive Model Y before I ordered, becauseI thought it won't be that much different than Model 3 Highland. Turns out I'm wrong and now I'm stuck with it. All I can do now is just get used to it and enjoy the practicality of it instead of how stiff it is. My car also rattles the hell out of the trunk too.
Kia EV6 rides great charges fast looks amazing and the dual motor is pretty snappy, no rattles and everything works perfectly, not much of a software nerd just know it all works, every car takes a little getting used too.
My wife and I rented a model Y on road trips to Las Vegas and Nebraska and I can say the supercharging is awesome but we were unimpressed. The ride was not comfortable for me. We had owned Kias and we went and bought a EV6 at a super great price. We love, love our EV6 Gtline. I drive it every day and use it for my work car and we road trip it. It is to be in on a daily basis. I guess I am not a tech nerd and having cheap cars over the years I don't mind some of the plastic.
The sound quality is superb. You may want to consider having Kyle and Coleton on the left of Alyssa in the 3 box configuration so that the eyeline is correct.
Totally agree, tesla are a great for two things 1. Supercharger network 2. Lots of tech for your money I had an audi a6 loaner, and that car was so much nice as a car, more refined ride, nice low driving position, more going on around you. If you could combine both, that would be something.
I have a 2024 Model Y AWD Ultra Red with the 20" wheels, not sure where it was assembled at but i don't have any rattles or gaps (quality issues) the ride is stiff but doesn't bother my me or my wife, we live in South Florida so maybe our roads are better, no potholes or patched up roads, not sure about the Colorado road conditions. I love minimalist like Kyle. Please do a review of the 2024/5 Model Y before the refresh and after. As for this review maybe you need someone that owns a 2024/5 Y instead of riding in a loaner a few hours for a better perspective. Great video overall 👍🏾
I don't own a Model Y but I've driven one and the lack of a screen behind the steering wheel is just stupid. Why does Tesla think that eliminating normal car things just for the sake of eliminating them a good idea?
As a MYLR owner who has owned "nice German cars". I need the space for 2 teenagers and hockey gear so a 3 doesn't work. Not a truck guy. MY is pretty much the only option if I want to stick with Tesla (software, superchargers, etc). Can't wait for Juniper for all the reasons you called out. FYI, also rocking a 2017 Leaf for around town.
Really love this long form format and it was great to hear from Alyssa! One small bit of feedback, having the TV doing inception behind Kyle is a little distracting visually, otherwise great audio and video setup.
The suspension on the latest long ranges is pretty good - on the sporty side though - it’s still a noisy ride though for sure compared to Audi Something being popular isn’t a reason to avoid it though ppl do that all the time like with bands. If you imagine no one has one, it’s cooler, but that’s in your head
My wife went from a Honda CRV to a 4680 Model Y with castings front and rear. She loves the car and since we mostly charge it at home, the supercharging speed isn't an issue. No rattles, solid suspension, great seats and a huge cargo area. She did NOT like my 2023 Model 3 Performance at all, stiff suspension, a few rattles, and she didn't like that it felt so tiny which meant she didn't feel safe. Fast forward a year and I traded my M3P for a Cybertruck and she LOVES the truck. If Tesla can make the new Model Y emulate the feel of the CT, then it will probably be a huge success.
2023 model Y has greatly improved suspension. It isn't so much stiff as it is rigid. You barely feel potholes if only one wheel is affected. I am looking forward to the refresh. Fantastic car for the money.
Exchanging my 2023 Model 3 LR AWD for a 2024 Model Y LR AWD was the best thing I ever did. The ride quality is the same between the two cars I owned. It is true though, Tesla changed the suspension in late 2022 and the 2024 Model Y is smooth like butter. Maybe Alicia experienced a 2021-2022 Model Y loaner. Next time it would be great to have the years of the loaners when we are talking about Tesla. Things that made me move from Model 3 to Model Y : - ingress/egress - towing capability - hatchback configuration And remarkable as it seems, the efficiency loss in the Model Y is less than 15% compared to the Model 3. And way better compared to all the other SUV competitors of the Model Y (Mach-E, Ioniq 5, EV6, ID4).
I recently drove a Highland Model 3 and a Model Y at the dealer. Liked the Model 3. Hated the Model Y. Will give a retry when Juniper comes out, but the Y I drove was nothing like "smooth as butter".
@@johndleggett I own(ed) both for more than a year, nothing like a 30 minutes ride, and the 2024 Model Y is as smooth as the 2023 Model 3 - not the Highland. The Highland is better, but not enough to make me forget about the fact that I have to dive inside it.
I should underline one thing : my Tesla Model Y has 19" wheels and that has an impact on the ride quality. The Tesla Model Y that are given for test drive are usually on 20" wheels and this does have an impact on the ride quality.
If you can deal with a slower charging speed the Equinox is a great alternative. Once you throw in incentives.. the Equinox is going to be a good $5k cheaper (or more) than a Model Y. The interior is much better and the ride is much more comfortable. It is an extremely likeable vehicle, despite losing almost everything on the spec sheet. It just feels right...
@@greenne There's nothing to agree/disagree, quality of materials is an objective metric. That the average buyer is incapable of correctly perceiving quality is well known in the industry, which is why legacy OEMs fill their interiors with all kinds of cheap design elements that add visual interest so as to give the perception of higher quality.
@boostav quality by its very definition is subjective. How do you measure "quality"...are you equating quality with durability, cost, or value? (Some combo of the three?) Where are your metrics? Oh wait...another Tesla bot. Tesla is not regarded as having great QC....
I found out my 2021 Y has lost 50% of its value after just 3 years even though it only has 18k miles. That scares me enough to want to sell it ASAP. I'm so glad to hear the discussion about the ride quality because I once considered trading it in for a newer one with the so-called comfort suspension only to hear it's not much of an improvement. There are also rattles from the cargo area trim panels.
My current biggest complaint on basic Autopilot is that you have to constantly disengage it to change lanes and it's terrible. If you cancel via the stalk you also cancel cruise control, so you have to cancel it via turning the wheel which takes a lot of force then you have to re-enable after the lange change. It's so bad. It either needs to do the lane change for you like enhanced autopilot does or pause while the turn signal is on, then resume after completion.
I have cruise on one pull, and Autopilot on 2 pulls. To lane change I use the turn signal which after a sec. disengages Autopilot, but leaves the car in cruise. So it maintains the same speed, you just have to steer into the new lane then, 1 pull puts it back into Autopilot. Not bad, but it does have me not wanting to change lanes as often as I would, if I was driving in just cruise.
I have a 2023 Fremont Model Y with 19 inch Gemini wheels and Continental tires. Wheel choice was deliberate to tame ride noise and harshness. The 19’s accept several covers. And aftermarket covers.
Have a 23 MYP and couldn’t disagree more. Great build quality. 20,000 miles and no rattles. I have pretty good roads in Arkansas so the suspension is great for me here. Much easier for me to get in and out of compared to MS or M3. I take it on road trips frequently and love it. (And I’ve owned MB and BMW, and Volvo) I’m looking forward to improvements, but love my current one. I get the “basic” interior knock, but I’ve gotten used to it and get the design. The ambient lighting will be a noticeable improvement.
She likely got a pre '23. The suspension was really rough on both the Y and 3 prior to '23. There's really a big difference. So coming from a luxury vehicle, it's really noticeable if she got a pre '23 model.
I have a 2022 MY LR and I live in the Mid-Atlantic. We don't have the best roads and the suspension has never bothered me. Can it be improved? Sure. I just put Hankook EV Ion tires on it and it is even quieter than the original OEM Continentals. The ride of the Performance model is stiffer I hear due to the larger wheels. I think having the 19 inch Gemini wheels was a good accidental move on my part. Oh, BTW I've driven to Florida twice over the past 2 years and the only state where I noticed a less than desirable ride was going through South Carolina and it wasn't that bad.
Man…..OOS is so positive, so educational and multifaceted. All that with a dose of varied personalities manning the ship. Pure excellence in entertainment as well as education.
The MY LR is a great daily, if you care about interior space, storage, range, and cost, but yeah limited feel. I drive PS2 performance (not practical but fun). In shopping, I tested a used Taycan 4S and the tech felt so antiquated.
We have driven Corvettes most of our lives. The Model Y suspension delivers the same experience. The 255 mm wide tires have the same footprint as the revolutionary 1984 Corvette had, and even a bit more aggressive aspect ratio. So I am very pleased with our Y, a cargo hauler and high performance SUV in one vehicle. However as we get older, I hope the Juniper Model Y refresh has a softer, more isolated, ride. I think most mainstream buyers will also appreciate that.
Love the video and very interesting views from everyone. I bought a 2022 Y long range new (ordered in 2021 and waited 8 months). I agree with the ride quality, it could be better but mine is built solid with no squeaks or rattles. I drive 25k+ annually so while the car is only 2 1/2 years old, I have 65k miles on it. The charging, compared to the competition today needs improvement, but you just can't beat the Tesla network, it's everywhere. Im also very techy and software is VERY important to me, once again Tesla wins. I do prefer the model 3, hands down, but I need the space the Y provides on my long distance trips along with a hitch to carry my mountain bikes. It's not perfect, but for me, it very hard to beat.
I must have been lucky, cause my '21 M3P w/Ubers with Cont all seasons year round (had since new); no rattles so far (I think there is a rear seat rattle that happens like one drive a month). And I drive that thing from the midwest to east coast (and other places far) more times than I can remember loaded down with 3 people and luggage. I like stiff suspensions, but overall the car is solid.
I think they still get the win for specs on paper and it’s still relatively early adopters that are worried about the infrastructure. My dad got an s for the range and supercharging and after 2 years he has realized he doesn’t use either and could have got basically any other EV.
I drove 38 different vehicles before purchasing the Y. Sure, there are a few cars left that are more exciting to drive, but they are either exotics or they cost 2-3X what the Y does--I'm referring to cars like the 911, M3, some AMG cars, etc. I learned pretty quickly in car shopping that there is no better $40k cross over SUV that combines practicality, safety, performance, driving pleasure, etc.
I would be willing to bet she may have mistaken the loaner car as a rwd because ive noticed from my experience they have several at each experience center and the way she described the power seems that of a rwd
My cousin sold her Y and bought the id4 and 'loves it from a driving perspective but especially no rattles.' Her words on Sunday. For me I am leaning towards the EV9. I feel more comfortable in that style than the Y or the cybertruck. It isn't going to change what I can do and should fit into my life. It basically is similar with what I have and it is 5 to 6 times more efficient. Thanks to Alyssa for giving her impressions! Always enjoy your thoughts and feelings. It helps other gain perspective. You looked fairly annoyed on that trip to Norway, except for most of the food.
Crazy that this comes out the day I get a Model Y loaner! This one has acceleration boost so it feels just as fast as a Model 3. I think it’s for the person who doesn’t care about driving dynamics, and wants a bigger model 3.
There are 2 safe ways to disengage FSD: 1. Tap the brake 2. Push up on the right stock. Torquing the wheel to disengage is the least safe way to disengage.
I just rented a '21 and have all the same issues. Coming from an Ioniq5, the Y is way stiff. 2nd strike for us was my kid can see out of the 3rd row. So even though used/new the Y is cheaper, were shopping the other three rows that are better 3 rows
To each their own. It is good to hear someone's HONEST opinion (even if badly stated). Except for the rough ride, I am thoroughly enjoying my 2024 MYLR. With the rebates (state, local and federal) and low interest rates AND superb Tesla software.
I own a 2021 model Y. It’s amazing. I needed a compact SUV. I almost purchased a BMW X3 plug in. I have only owned BMWs because of the throttle response, handling ( I like the sport suspension). I drove the model Y and I was hooked because of the acceleration, handling, and superior sound system ( way better than BMWs premium Harmon Kardon). I test drove the more expensive etron and it was not as zippy, no regen and infotainment was inferior. So happy with my decision. No rattles and the range is great.
@@HansProbs right, but when you are 28 years old and get to drive so many 100k+ cars all the time and you have a Model S Plaid, CyberTruck, and Audi eTron in the garage all at the same time, you can afford to look down on all the lowly people who own a Model Y and think it's the best car they have ever owned.
I currently own a 2022 Model 3 LR MiC and find the ride quite harsh. Model Y LR MiG feels like a boat and very soft, Model Y Performance MiG has the perfect balance. It’s firm but not harsh. No rattling and much quieter than my Model3. I imagine opting for 20” or 19” wheels would further improve NVH and performance (as tested from someone on YT) Model 3 Highland on the other hand feels way to soft. Every time I floored it the nose went straight up like an Audi A8 4.2.
My friend wants a Tesla. I recommended that he wait for the refresh Y. He test drove the current Y then test drove my 3P Highland. He loved the upgrades on the 3 and he is a rather big guy so he will now wait for the Y refresh.
For me, I like the seating position of the Y. If the same updates as the 3 are applied to the Y it will be nearly a perfect daily driver. Just my $.02.
I love Alyssa, she’s so honest and direct, it’s hilarious 😂 I agree with you guys. I don’t understand why people love the Tesla Y. I think it’s as you said that people just want the simple A to B solution. I hated driving it, I got out of the parking lot so it took me a minute longer than Alyssa. I also don’t like how it looks, and it’s way too common and they’re all the same color.
Quite interesting perspective! I had a 2018 Model 3, and the 2023 Y is such a better ride (to me). But now I have to look with a different perspective. Thanks for this!
Recently leased a new model Y. This is the most expensive vehicle I have ever purchased, yet it was cheaper than other comparable vehicles. The ability to put in a wheelchair easily into the back was more important than almost anything else. I do not need a car that can go 130 mph, when the speed limit is 80. What I need is a safe ride for my family and the fact that it has the supercharger system throughout the country will enable us to take some longer road trips, even if we have to spend an extra five or 10 minutes per stop, I cannot say that I love the car yet, and I do not trust the FSD. I can say that it is roomy, has a good stereo, and has sufficient features to keep us all occupied going down the road.
We have a 2022 and 2025 LR Model Y. There is a big difference in ride quality when it comes to the suspension. I do like how they improved the rear camera which is better covered to avoid getting dirty. I believe the Juniper, of course, will bring next gen technology. Love the podcast and audio sounds great!
The camera angle 📐 on Colton’s cam is way too low and close perspective. It needs to be a little higher up like the one on Kyle to make the person look better and more natural.
I love my 2023 Y and I thought it was very comfortable with good ride quality. I certainly thought it was much better than the combustion car it replaced. HOWEVER, about a month ago we purchased a Highland 3 LR AWD. Now when I’m in the Y, I think it’s exactly what Kyle says. It’s boomy, stiff, high frequency bumps are annoying, etc. I enjoy the 3 a lot more. The only thing about the 3, most people these days like the higher seating position of the Y and it’s more practical and that’s why it sells better. The stereo in the Y is slightly better, and I actually thing the older seats are slightly more comfortable. It definitely needs the Highland treatment.
Just got back from a trip where I rented a Model Y from Turo. My first Tesla driving experience. Aligned exactly with your comments: fast and handles well, but ride too harsh for daily driving and the NVH was fatiguing. I found that latching the unused seatbelts helped with rattles, but were others that wouldn't go away.
The model Y ride realy depends on the year, 2021 drives like a tank, 2023 they did improve, but not enough for me so I replaced the dampers win Tien Adjustable, that improved it but not enough so I am going for progressive springs to improve the ride even more I heard lot of 2024 owners say that model was a big improvement!
The Model Y is a 3 that has traded extreme driving fun for practicality. The Y gives you a hatch with a flat and low tail gate that fits almost anything and is very comfortable to sit on. Open the hatch, sit down on the shaded tail, crack a beer, call your dog up to sit next to you. Of all the Teslas you sleep most comfortably in the Y and can fit a DC fridge in the sub trunk. You can also tow up to 3,500lbs without adding an aftermarket hitch (18ft camper). I have a MYP and miss driving my M3P every day but the Y is a LOT more useful doing bigger things than the 3.
I _wanted_ to like the model 3 as I like how it looks and had read it handles better, but I am what one might consider a tubby individual, and found the Y much easier to get in and out of. I ended up with a late ‘23 MYP and am quite pleased with the ride & handling. I had an anniversary edition ‘99 Miata (factory lowered) & also an ‘09 Acura TL Type S, and I would put the ride & handling of my MYP between those two. I do tend to prefer cars with stiffer suspension as I am prone to motion sickness, and I’ve learned over the years I do a lot better with stiffer suspensions; comfy cars with soft, cushy suspensions might as well be boats as far as my stomach is concerned & make Dramamine mandatory… …with regards to the boominess, no resonance in mine (it’s a late ‘23 Fremont build), as I understand if the bump stops on the rear hatch are not properly adjusted it can cause that resonance.
3 year old Shanghai MYLR here. I remember I thought it was extremely stiff when I first got into it and then I just got used to it, took a few days. After that it's "it is what it is", still love the car. If I totaled it tomorrow, I'd buy a MYLR again. But yeah, the suspension is probably one of the worse parts of the car.
US Model Y. The viewers should keep in mind that this covers the US-built Model Y. The wheels also have a big effect on comfort, as you know. I have 22k on my China Model Y on 19" & have no rattles. I would not say no to "Highland" type shocks, but on well kept European roads, the times you might notice the suspension is on manhole covers and the occasional coble stone streets (which are mostly 20mph anyway).
not a criticism, more of a question. Why does Kyle's arm show behind his head on the his left, when he's extending his right arm pretty far to the right, his hand shows up above his head. Its like its wrapping around a frame?
The monitor behind him is repeating what we're seeing on the screen. I believe he's switching between cameras live so that they won't have to edit different angles together before posting and can just put out what they record right away.
SuperCharger network, FSD, software integration is why. I have Model Y and I hate the suspension and NVH issues but what's the alternative? There's nothing out there.
When I sit in a Tesla I, with the buttons, the lack of display, indicator buttons, lack of gear selector, I instantly think my experience is being cost-cut and it's not a great feeling in what's still an expensive car. All those things are individually overcome but they add up to make it feel like they are more interested in saving money than giving a good experience. And that's in a way that not even Honda or Toyota do
I just traded in my etron for the MY because of the opposite of what she is saying. I agree its suspension isnt great but everything else is better. Also had an merc e class and im still picking the MY. The experience is way better and etron’s interior is just as bad or worse! I also literally couldn’t sell my etron and had to take the hit and trade it in. Oh yeah, FSD for the win!
I had the same impression of the ride quality of the Model Y as a passenger. It had a very rough ride unless the pavement was perfectly smooth.
We have late 2023 y. Horribly bumpy. We just drove through an alley in Los Angeles and I have a traumatic brain injury.
I always enjoy Alyssa’s opinion and participation in these videos. However, I really miss Francie. She had real gift for hosting and did a terrific job researching and presenting each topic. I’d love to know what she moved onto and if it’s in the EV industry.
Agree. She was a real asset.
Francine was amazing.
I love Alysa real person perspective. And she is not afraid to say she doesn’t like a Tesla as her car
Tesla loaners are often older Model Ys, often as far back as 2021. 2023 and later Model Ys have improvements over those older models.
@@777Outrigger Thanks for mentioning this. I have a 23 and have none of the negatives they're talking about. Quiet and solid.
Please turn off the TV behind Kyle next time 🙏
Yes! Seeing Kyle's enlarged arm swinging behind him with a slight delay was really annoying.
Yes. I have a 2023 Model Y and the ride is TERRIBLE! Make sure you test drive before buying…..
ALSO, the interior is very “boomy” Yes. The model Y needs the Highland treatment…..
🤣 I thought that was someone making fun of how much he talks with is hands.
I mean to compare and cross shop a Model 3 Perf with a Q8 etron you need to have double digit IQ
2023 wasn’t around during Covid?
Good to see Kyle stop interrupting people and letting them speak by themselves now
We’re past the early adopter phase for EVs. People are looking for value and practicality above all else. That’s why the Y is so popular.
Same here. I have a 2021 with 75,000 miles
Great Video! So what car would you get over the Model Y in the same price range?
“Won’t be super long.” 54 minutes! 😂 Keep these podcasts coming. Great listening material for my commute.
@@AK2CO of course it's bigger lol. Its double the price....
Great listening to Alyssa! What a gem for the channel.
the longer cars also tend to be really used trade-ins and one I got had a sticker saying it was bought back due to lemon law.
I’m with Alyssa. Yes, nobody has software as good as Tesla. But day to day having a comfortable and quiet car is a bigger priority for me
Same here. I rec teslas to everyone bc it’s just easy to use. But I can’t stand the ride, noise, squishy seats or fast steering of MY. Like Kyle said, I gives me a headache from it.
What about Chevy equinox EV I think that’s a home run
Totally agree, tesla are a great for two things
1. Supercharger network
2. Lots of tech for your money
I had an audi a6 loaner, and that car was so much nice as a car, more refined ride, nice low driving position, more going on around you.
It’s just cost cutting.
Definitely cost
A key to being a happy EV owner is not lusting after more range, better charging, and more advanced tech. Love Alyssa's viewpoint.
Alyssa was quite good in this video. I could see her being the regular podcast host.
I love Alyssa's review, her no holds barred comments were great. The car "is trash" 😂😂 I liked that Alyssa doesn't let Kyle direct her thoughts.
She is behind the camera since Kyle started YT .. please correct me if I’m wrong.. so she has quite an experience
Really love this long form format and it was great to hear from Alyssa! One small bit of feedback, having the TV doing inception behind Kyle is a little distracting visually, otherwise great audio and video setup.
I agree.
I agree
The suspension on the latest long ranges is pretty good - on the sporty side though - it’s still a noisy ride though for sure compared to Audi
Something being popular isn’t a reason to avoid it though
ppl do that all the time like with bands. If you imagine no one has one, it’s cooler, but that’s in your head
Great seeing Alyssa do a podcast love the podcasts keep them coming!
Things that made me move from Model 3 to Model Y :
- ingress/egress
- towing capability
- hatchback configuration
And remarkable as it seems, the efficiency loss in the Model Y is less than 15% compared to the Model 3.
Interior is much worse on the Equinox not better, this is simply an objective matter based on quality of materials used.
@@boostavi disagree.
I am loving this podcast series!
Is there any way to fix the subwoofer rattle mine has that and it’s killing me!! Have a 2024 m3lrawd
I have a 21 MYLR and a 25 RIVN R1s and when I get in in the MY, the suspension feels so "cheap". I never noticed until I got the Rivian.
Maybe Alyssa should look at the Volvo EX30. Oh... I know it's small and having dogs it may be too small. But Kyle was very excited when he drove it.
My wife test drove the Volvo EX30 and she liked driving it. I was surprised that I fit in the back seat, lol.
More Alyssa! Couldn’t agree more about the model Y. It drives so bad! Can’t wait to see refreshed model Y.
I wonder if chill mode was on for that Model Y loaner, as Alyssa complained about the performance.
There are 3 reasons you might buy a model Y: 1. you want the best value EV 2. You want a dummy proof road tripper 3: you believe in FSD
Interesting. My 2021 Y is the standard range which works for me. I put 18 inch wheels and taller tires and it rides awesome.
I just rented a '21 and have all the same issues. Coming from an Ioniq5, the Y is way stiff. 2nd strike for us was my kid can see out of the 3rd row. So even though used/new the Y is cheaper, were shopping the other three rows that are better 3 rows
Alyssa was genuine and great in the podcast!
Yeah Im with you. Im kind of shocked at all the Model Y dislike. Its such an awesome package especially for the money right now.
Where is Francie?
she moved on
she got overwhelmed and she is doing something else now - no hard feelings
?????????
@ lol where have you been?
Yeah no EQG will tank hard, only way for that not to happen is if they restrict production but the demand isn't there to do so.
I currently own a 2022 Model 3 LR MiC and find the ride quite harsh.
Model Y LR MiG feels like a boat and very soft, Model Y Performance MiG has the perfect balance. It’s firm but not harsh. No rattling and much quieter than my Model3. I imagine opting for 20” or 19” wheels would further improve NVH and performance (as tested from someone on YT)
Model 3 Highland on the other hand feels way to soft. Every time I floored it the nose went straight up like an Audi A8 4.2.
Great discussion. I'm like Alyssa. My Ioniq6 is super comfortable and I don't road trip it. And it was only 38K.
I love Alyssa, she’s so honest and direct, it’s hilarious 😂
I agree with you guys.
Here’s hoping Juniper will meet and/or exceed the Highland improvements. Especially the ride quality!
Put a your phone on screen mount. You can text while you have FSD on. Perfect with sunglasses. Love FSD.
I found that latching the unused seatbelts helped with rattles, but were others that wouldn't go away.
couldn't spell one word :) figured it out
thoroughly enjoyed this podcast, Alyssa was a fresh viewpoint, keep these coming Kyle
The model Y ride realy depends on the year, 2021 drives like a tank, 2023 they did improve, but not enough for me so I replaced the dampers win Tien Adjustable, that improved it but not enough so I am going for progressive springs to improve the ride even more
I heard lot of 2024 owners say that model was a big improvement!
a Kia EV9 is my lease purchase.......
How did I luck out that my 2018 Model 3 doesn’t rattle or have (yet?) control arm squeaks. Just shy of 60k miles can’t be why?
I _wanted_ to like the model 3 as I like how it looks and had read it handles better, but I am what one might consider a tubby individual, and found the Y much easier to get in and out of.
I ended up with a late ‘23 MYP and am quite pleased with the ride & handling. I had an anniversary edition ‘99 Miata (factory lowered) & also an ‘09 Acura TL Type S, and I would put the ride & handling of my MYP between those two.
I do tend to prefer cars with stiffer suspension as I am prone to motion sickness, and I’ve learned over the years I do a lot better with stiffer suspensions; comfy cars with soft, cushy suspensions might as well be boats as far as my stomach is concerned & make Dramamine mandatory…
…with regards to the boominess, no resonance in mine (it’s a late ‘23 Fremont build), as I understand if the bump stops on the rear hatch are not properly adjusted it can cause that resonance.
Much prefer the MYP over the M3. M3 is too low
not a criticism, more of a question.
Alyssa is the bomb. great personality fun to see her express her own opinion, even if its wrong...lol
SuperCharger network, FSD, software integration is why. I have Model Y and I hate the suspension and NVH issues but what's the alternative? There's nothing out there.
Great video. Slowing my urge to get a highland based on all the longer term impressions
yeah. I have the same feeling on Tesla build quality. I've owned two over five years, and now I'm moving on
In Australia we are getting bombarded with Chinese cars at the moment and most of them look so much better then the Y...
Good show ! Such a good channel (european speaking, think "best channel ever") ! Keep going !
