It was a temp boost that inevitably hurt multiple other industries. Higher tariffs for other countries like China, never help America and they never will. It will lead to a temp boost then crash.
It's why GM had to close a factory and layoff 14k people. Trump's tariffs. He doesn't know economics or how any of this works.
I can't understand why there isn't consistent explanation in the media (and even among the Democratic Party publicly) about how tariffs actually work. Trump is able to keep falling back on the most simplistic and wrong-headed concept about tariffs and he is not presented with the usual consequences of imposing them. Tariffs hit production costs and industry passes those costs onto consumers. A country cannot just switch from imports to domestic production, nor can it automatically produce goods of an equivalent quality at lower cost. It's just magical thinking at best and utter dishonesty at worst. With Trump....it's probably a mixture of pure ignorance and gross lies.

If you listened, recall the line where he said tax on steel that China was dumping. Those are tariff's, that is a tool to protect the domestic industry of any country. Also US is in a trade deficit, basically foreign countries are heavily taxing US products but US is not responding appropriately which has been causing loss in the trading prices.
Increasing tariff's for US products will basically cause a price stabilization globally.

Trump didn't specifically answer the question - just said that taxation structure was the answer...then proceded to give the example of the tariffs he put on steel. -trump does that, the (Chinese) exporters put up their price. The American consumer has to pay or do without. That sounds to me like a recipe for putting American companies out of business.
The USA has a big trade deficit. Many countries that export to the USA place high tariffs on American goods. Tariffs are often a negotiating tool. When other countries agree to allow the export of more American goods, it becomes possible for the USA to lower tariffs on their goods.
No commentary, no analysis, and no arguments from his opponents are needed. You just have to let Trump speak to show whether he is competent.
Oh there is a big workaround on that, that benefits US citizens, foreign companies just invest (heavily) on US companies. This in turn increases revenue and promote the domestic industries growth.
And about the line "The American consumer has to pay or do without", don't buy imported products. Simple as that, India did that in the industrial revolution. Can't US citizens do the same, India was considered a 3rd world back when that happened.
