What Joe said about walking into a shop is so real, and as a tattooer it’s not an ego thing. It’s about respecting the people who paved the road who us who tattoo now.
Being up on my tattoo history is how I met JD Crowe.

I actually really get the article that Jon read
It’s not pushing everyone to be a tattoo artist, it’s understanding that the younger generation, those getting tattooed, want to feel good about who they’re going to.
I myself as a 32 yr old collector and tattoo apprentice, when I go to an artist, their art, their values and what they stand for matters to me. Are they genuinely good people who love art, who care about you as a client? Many artists, it is obvious that it’s just about money to them. Their successful and have huge followings, and at conventions, would be hungover, high etc and tattooing clients. (Have seen this literally. artists get too cocky and basically not give a shit about the tattoos they do sometimes).
You can’t just be an amazing artist, you have to be a brand that people are proud to wear and represent. Many are annoyed by it nowadays, but yes, to be successful you have to be a good artist, good marketer, a good artist and good PERSON all around. It is what it is.

No the issue is that hungover high douchebag is always going to make more money. Because of their online persona, and good marketing. The people struggling are the friendly, solid and good tattooers, who just can't break into the marketing flow of IG. And yes douchebags are being pushed out, but they're being pushed out for these influencer tattooers,(the same people you complained about) many of whom are not good, and don't care about longevity, or their client at all.

I got my first tattoo in like 1991 or so. I'm still getting tattooed. What I find interesting about tattooers and tattoo conventions...I can walk-up and get a decent tattoo for $400. Then, for a different convention, I pre- booked with a tattooer that charged me a "travel fee" and a hefty day rate. (The convention advertised this tattoer being there) i think some collectors are starting to feel taken advantage of, and it's turning people off.

Some guys overcharge. But at the same time I know some guys that could charge more but they don't ask for more. So it's different for everybody. If you feel taken advantage of I think it's time to find some new artists

@@derekwalter4238 my regular tattooer is amazing and is extremely generous with his talents. I'm just saying, it's really interesting how differently some tattoers charge, especially at conventions. I willingly paid the travel fee to the tattoer who ended up tattooing an amazing design for me. I am happy to pay. I would never ask someone to lower their rate or give a discount. I also thought it was interesting that a tattoer who was already planning to be at the convention was charging a travel fee. Why not just add that to the price without calling it a travel fee. I know booths are $ and accommodations are $ , would they charge a walk-up a travel fee? Just interesting. Again, I paid it, in fact i paid well over $2000 + tip for a 9.5 hour session.

He was on a reality tv show as a judge. Profited from it, and the end result is people got inspired to be tattoo artist. This is what came of it. Those reality tv show should have never happened. Studios feasted, tattoo shops got more customers and a bubble was created. This is almost every other industry. Culinary, design, programming. We’re in a mess now.

It's not about people preferring to have a meal.
In the vast majority of studios ( instagram will confirm this )
The booking process is a nightmare, you're treated like shit as a client.
The prices are absolutely insane even for a small piece of flash.
Tattooers thinking that a few thousand instagram followers makes them a celebrity.
Tattooing used to be a working class profession, now it's lame.

Much of this dudes internet takes are ones you would expect from someone that just doesnt really understand whats really going on.
The algorithm isnt like the guy at the magazine that blocked you from being published at all, its a popularity system, if people liked your tattoos and you were getting thousands of likes it would boost that picture, its not like someone at Instagram hates New School tattoos and has a vendetta against your style.
I think Jon was more on the money with that new app failing, there is no point to switch to a new app if it doesnt provide some value to its customers. The random person is already ingrained in the product so why should they switch? The big creators arent going to get paid on the new app so why should they? To say they dont want to start from 0 is not true, look at TikTok, many creators with millions of Insta followers started one up because it paid out top creators and people knew they could get more eyes and potential customers on it.
Social media for the tattooer is a tool, just like magazines were back in the day. Im sure back in the day old dudes were hating on anyone that got in them because back in their day they would get clients by standing on the corner and yelling or whatever they did.

exactly, especially in America. It's absolutely insane, every tattooer thinks they're entitled to be millionares and C list celebrities. The self entitlement is unreal, social media has gotten them thinking they're superstars.

Gotta admit, this guy is the representation of all these old timers just saying the same shit, in the same tone of hate. “Rewrite shit”? Sounds like he feels he is entitled to something? Time has pass and the young artists are using modern apps, tools. Ways of connecting to kicc off every invidually career as they do these days. These old timers are bummed out
