  • Choosing a flashlight that can be used for self defense, especially to blind someone, is not easy. You must consider a few things when you buy or look for a light, and with these criterias met, you will end up having a nice light that actually blind people effectively and not just make them more pissed off at you.

    Very informative. I had thought that the more lumens, the better protection. I also thought that the more bulbs, the better. I never even considered the reflector. Now I know better. Thanks for that. Of course, you might not be a reliable source of information, but somehow I think that I can believe what you say.

      +QUABLEDISTOCFICKLEPO Welcome and no it is not the more bulb the better. In fact, more bulb is worse! One good bulb, with one deep smooth reflector is the best!

    Concise yet very informative! The M18 seems ideal for this purpose. The strobe effect is more disorienting than a constant beam and the small size means a person is more likely to carry it all the time.
    Just add a refillable built-in pepper spray and stun gun to the flashlight then it would be perfect! :)

    The other good thing about the Striker (M1X) is it starts from the last setting it was on, so you can set it so one tap takes you directly into strobe mode. I think that's really important because in a self defense situation you want to keep it simple.

    One of my favorite flashlights I have is the Trustfire Z5 it's not small to conceal in your pocket but very useful for camping stuff. What I like about it is the Projector type lense and zoomable :)

    Good information. Just the sound quality lacks.
    I just want to add that you can see if it is a thrower or a flooder if you compare lumen with candela. Lumen is the light output. Candela is the light received at a point.For blinding you need high candela values.

    Good video but I can sum it up even faster: choose the light with the highest candela output :) If it's higher than 6-7000 you should be good to go.
    An expensive but good option is the Surefire E1D Defender which has 6500 candela and a striking bezel. It's good palm sized light, but very expensive. Other small sized EDC lights don't really pop into my mind, maybe the Eagletac D25C click, and some Nitecores.

      +Ádám Varga ,
      That information might be of some value, but where do you find it? No advertisement that I've seen mentions candela or candlepower.

      QUABLEDISTOCFICKLEPO Luckily neither do I need your acknowledgement to share valuable thoughts :)
      I own several dozens of flashlights (I am youtube reviewer on my other account), ranging from low ouptput to very highly concentrated beams.
      When it comes to practical application (blinding an attacker from 5-8 feet) you need a highly concentrated beam, simple as that.
      Floody lights with low candela output (1200-1500 cd) are not blinding enough to burn dots into the pupil for several seconds.
      Using my various flashlights, I learned, that about 5-6000 candelas is where it gets to the point, that it is extremely painful to look into the light. Of course it all depends on how dark it is, and how much the attackers eyes have adjusted to the darkness. But for AVERAGE circumstances 5000 candela is the minimum.
      Not sure if it was too technical for you, but if it was, look up some thread about the relationship of lumens and candela, since it is essential to understand.

    Hi Mak! i have 4lights including M18 striker and Nitecore P12.
    P12 has multiple advantages compared to M18:
    -a bit more lumens
    -strobe has a more blinks per seconds
    -has memory for strobe mode.
    This is not just on paper, when i compare them by looking straight to them, The P12 is really pushing my head away. I suggest you give it a try.

      Radu D I'm looking at the p12gt over the p12 as it looks like it has a tighter beam. If you like the p12, the gt should be great Yeah?

    excellent review as always Mak, I love all your videos. I've kinda missed watching your videos.. IMA have to binge watch you now! BTW. my everyday pocket carry light is the Nightstick TWM-350. its design allows for perfect pocket carry, as well as the mounting to a pistol. its designed for police and j love the ambidextrous, momentary/constant on switches. the only bad thing is that it can turn on in your pocket and waste the expensive cr123, batteries... I need to find a good rechargeable alternative to the primary cell lithium's.

    I just stumbled upon your channel...a little late. So the Olight M18 striker is no longer sold. What do you recommend that has the same features you suggested smooth, deep reflector, yellowish light, though maybe improved on? Something that can be placed in a purse or pocket..
    Great knowledgeable video btw!

    For self defense I really wanna carry a gun but the law of my country prohibit me of carrying a gun, then comes knives but carrying knives is asking for trouble because in every country of the world the police can interpret that you carrying with the intention of harming someone (For police, bandits are also people, unfortunately) and then they apprehend your knives. So for self defense I am strongly considering tactical flashlights and tactical pens. You Rock Mak! You are doing a great service with this video. Just one question. Does the Olight M22 Warrior - 950 Lumens Flashlight, New for 2013 have a beam strong enough to blind?

    • @MakHobby
      @MakHobby  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      PowerMadHeadBanger Yes you are right, a light is much more "non weapon" vibe to the police, especially the dumb ones. The Olight M22 is okay but the reflector design is not for blinding. I must say that the bezel is not good for thrusting and stabbing either. The Olight M18 striker is way better for self defense because of the sharp bezel and the blinding-geared reflector. Not the higher lumen the better man, sometimes just a nice reflector with about 200 lumens can blind the shit out of you already, while you can stare into a 2000 lumen light with orange peel and wide reflector and still do a talk show, LOL!

      Hi Mak.
      Thank you for your video,nice work.
      What about the SR52 Intimidator?It seems to be stronger.(1200Lm against 800Lm of the M18 Striker).

    Hi,
    ?
    Everywhere on internet it is said that this M23 JAVELOT is the blindest flashlight. Have you ever tested it ?

  • @AshGreen359
    @AshGreen359 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Have you ever tested the thrunite tn12? It has a smooth reflector but it's slightly more floody than most tactical throwers. So I'm wondering how well it would work for blinding or how effective the strobe really is.

  • @mycarmails
    @mycarmails 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    First off great videos to the point and informative. What are your thoughts on beam intensity aka CD lux or candela in terms of blinding potential? I was between olight m1x and Nitecore p12gt and went with Nitecore because it has 25700 CD while olight has 9000 CD. Also because it has a memory strobe. Should I return it for the olight?

    Nice vic. & good info. I used 2 carry huge mag lite (with accu pack&charger in car) at work as guard. It made a great bat to hit with ✊ but the halogeeen bulp would break so easy! LED is great. Use the Fenix TK 16 now. Its cheapish and does the job. U know it? Thnx for the video anyway

  • @MakHobby
    @MakHobby  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Benedict Benito - there are stunt guns and shit with flashlights combo, but when you have more things in the package, the light is often garbage. Just like most china-knockoff, they love to make MORE features to outbeat the legit companies, but they also give you garbage quality internals and light bulbs in exchange, LOL

      haha, well get an olight m18 striker, you won't regret for the purchase, especially I have shown and proven that it can break glass bottles (liquor again) without sharpening the bezel ring!

    • @MTHA-45
      @MTHA-45 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah i watched that vid of you sharpening the bezel ring, never thought about that before, nice tip :) well i dont have much cash to play with at the moment so was looking at cheaper flashlights and came across this
      www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Zweihnder-Y51-Rechargeable-5-Mode-1xCree-XML-T6-Explosion-proof-LED-Flashlight-/151427759144?pt=AU_Lighting_Fans&hash=item2341cc3c28
      I know its cheap but how menacing is that! hahaha!

    • @MakHobby
      @MakHobby  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kal El The problem is, most of these cheap lights, when you strike them, you will also damage the internals, like the board and stuff inside, and then the light will die. Also, the "teeth" on the 4 corners are very weak like that, and it won't give you a good striking power. You will want a "ring" bezel with teeth and so at least it will withstand more impact than 4 single "tooth" sticking out like that.
