  • Just a curious and non scientific test of the differences between both being and getting strobed and high beamed.

    Here's an idea:
Get a foam bat and try to hit your friend while he tries to avoid and blind you, compare direct lighting with strobe.

Interesting test.Keep on the good work!
I'm the guy who left the original comment about the strobe not being necessarily the best option for self defense.
From your test in that specific environment it doesn't seem like the strobe makes it more difficult to see movement compared to the solid light.
Like you said it depends on the light too.I've seen lights with slower strobes that really makes things look like they are happening in slow motion. The Klarus has a really fast strobe compared to other lights I have used in the past.
One question you didn't answer is if the strobe is really more disorientating than a solid light as you had your eyes closed.
I believe the brightness is what blinds you, not the flickering of the light.
I know that test what to see the difference for the person holding the light and not the victim though.
Another thing you did the test outdoor. If you do the same thing in a small room especially with white walls you're more likely to suffer from the effects of the strobe as much as the bad guy.
Also another reason I like the "outdoor mode" better than the so-called "tactical" one is that you get instant low mode as well.
You're not always using your light to blind people, sometimes you just want to navigate without giving your position away and without using too much light.

JoeDurobot Hello Joe! It is good to hearing back from you! I apologize for having forgotten your account name in the video. If it wasn't for your comments we would have never thought of doing this video. Once again, you have brought up some very valid points. For me personally, the strobe felt a bit more "severe" with my eyes closed, but the test was so brief I am not entirely certain. Your mentioning the difference between being outdoors verses indoors is another solid point. We may have to address that in a future video. Also, I have been experimenting with both modes on my XT2CR since reading your original comment, and am currently also operating my personal light in outdoor mode. Thank you Joe!

strobe is harder on your eyes because in between the flashes of light, your eyes open their pupils again because its dark, they are then flashed with a bright light with open pupils, making it way more disorienting :)

I am thinking along the lines of I am pulling a flashlight first to see who is approcahing me and gain better SA, when I usually pull my flashlight out I aim it to the ground to illuminate the area, If someone seems to be threatening, I would aim the beam directly to their face and pull my firearm. I feel a strobe would impact my sight picture with a flashlight. and the steady stream of light will still blind someone. Not going to stop them. but it will disorient them enough to to give you more time to get your front sight post on em.

By far one of the more comprehensive videos in terms of answering the questions about various scenarios. That said, my whole understanding of strobe vs. solid light advantage is that the strobe is more advantageous when the defender moves around and knows the layout in a dark environment. Example being if you know where your furniture is and keep moving while pointed at an offender/intruder that has a weapon drawn, the strobe could disorient them while you navigate around physical obstacles (aka furniture) whilst you (defender) know where to step and move around. I was also specifically thinking about a strobe function attachment to a pepper-ball pistol for non-lethal home defense to the point I could get close enough to take down a larger person with blunt force and subdue them...just a thought

    • @yoothas483

Exactly this !! With Strobe your sight is also missing "frames" so you either have a very good knowledge of your surroundings or i would definitely go with solid so i can keep a clear and constant sight on what he's doing. I think your video camera has not done justice to the strobing effects of the light when shining on the attacker. When you point the strobe effects to the camera, the effect are much more pronounced. To see the true effects of the strobe, you camera should be set to high speed... above 60 frames per second. The Strobing effects on the attacker are much more dis-orientating than on the defender who is stationary. The defenders who feel dis-oriented should practice a couple of minutes a day moving around with the strobe light throughout their environment. The best tactic is to blind the attacker with solid bright light if he is stationary.... and when the attacker begins moving use the strobe. The strobing will disorientate even more. If you have to move use the normal bright light, blinding him.

The initial blindness is what matters most and you look like both eyes are closed from start to finish so the test means nothing. It would be the effectiveness of the initial blinding at various distances that you should be testing. With both eyes closed there is no disorientation so you just keep aiming in the direction you're facing as to where if you got hit with the Intial blast of light for all you know your target stepped left or right a few steps. Great Idea for a video just not enough thought put into it.

I don't care what anyone says. Flashlights are absolutely the best self-defense tool in the world. They're a hundred percent legal to carry anywhere in the world, they can't permanently hurt or damage anyone (unless they have epilepsy or some other neurological disorder.) They bring attention to the situation by providing you with light, and temporarily blinding your assailant, they can be used as a blunt-force object at close range and can Perry certain types of weapons, most of them can fit right in your pocket or right on a holster on your belt, and they're not too pricey. Not to mention, they come in handy during the daytime to. How many of you have dropped your keys or phone in a dark area (like behind the couch or under the car seat) and thought, "oh my God I wish I had a flashlight with me right now!" I know I have!

One test you didn't do is moving to one side with turbo and then with strobe. The reason I mention that is from others who experimented with this found that with strobe, the 'subject' seeing the light found it harder to detect side movement with strobe. So, if that is true, I'd rather use strobe since it is harder to detect my side movement. Also, modern lights also have a variable strobe, no rhythm. I would tend to think that makes it worse for the person looking at the light.

A great idea for a video!
I have read some studies, about the testing of how a strobe mode affects our vision. Then, which was a couple of years ago now. We tested it here ourselves.
You bring up a great point, about the strobe causing somewhat of a slow motion effect, and that definitely needs to be taken into account. Also of course, we need to take into account the situation, distance of a possible threat, and threat level.
From the studies I've read, and the testing we've done here. I'd like to point another thing to look at. And that is the strobe rate. We can of course discuss a steady light, vs a strobe. Such as you've done here. That discussion needs to take place. But we then also need to discuss, whether we're trying to disorient the target, or keep an eye on his every move.
I'd look at that decision like this. If for example, we thought it possible that the target may pull a weapon, and we had one on our person as well. I'd go for the steady light. Because if something should start to happen, we could do something about it. But, if we were worried that the target may pull a weapon, and we had none. Then we'd have to go for the strobe mode. while thinking about taking cover, right?
But what I'd like to throw into the mix here, is the strobe rate. If we are behind the flashlight, and the target is looking into it. We are far less likely to be affected. Is what we've found is, that a slower strobe rate, gives the targets eyes more time to dilate again, after seeing the blast of light, and the constriction of the pupil. With another pulse coming at the target, into eyes that are in the process of dilating again, or never fully constricted in the first place. Causes more issues for the target. A steady light will of course cause constriction of the pupil, but then can be 'gotten used to' more by the target (squinted eyes, constricted pupils, low lumens, etc.) rather than a constant yo-yoing of the pupils.
A shot of 2000 lumens (smooth reflector) into eyes, where the iris is more open, is very effective. Of course there is a sweet spot to be found here in the strobe rate, and we rarely see flashlight manufactures give us that rate in their spec sheet. A beacon mode, for example on a Manker MK35, can be very useful too! Given the target is at some distance, and the flashlight user is able to move between blinks.

A little slower causes much more eye adjustment sequences as compared to your light....I know this from using it on myself..!! On the otherhand, a very high lumen light, 4000 or more can be very affective, especially when compared to 10-20,000 lumen lights

Nitecore P10iX Tactical Flashlight Floodlight, 4000 Lumen LED USB-C Rechargeable Super Bright Compact with LumenTac OrganizerNitecore P10iX Tactical Flashlight Floodlight, 4000 Lumen LED USB-C Rechargeable Super Bright Compact with LumenTac , which can be set for either instant probe or secondary push intense beam, both at maximum output..!! Every one I have used it on says that this should be illegal it's so disorienting, takes several seconds to recoup your sight clearly.!!

If you yourself can handle the strobe, I feel it’d be more defensive than a solid, with a solid, you can slightly glance a different direction and still approach but the strobe is going to continue to make their eyes try to focus on the light.

Especially with fenixes patented alternating strobe pattern.
But honestly a canted light away from center mass of the body is better because the attacker will walk right to the direction of the light. Lol

Just wait to attacker to your strike range
    Then it's close eneough
1 flash and it's blinded for 3 sec. Go on and make ur move with flashlighyt bezels strike Real good and hard Side of the skull
    Nose
    Mouth
    Throat
Back of the neck etc. Always aim for the head
Then proceed to disarm if therese a pistol or smth.

Everyone's eyes are different. && for home defense either strobe or steady beam will probably disorient someone who is not expecting it. I do believe the strobe may slow down reaction time however a direct beam will give the intruder a direct target if he or she is shooting back. Yes inside a resident's might be different with white walls && loud noises . Please do more test. Anyone please give input or criticism

How about you actually let your eyes adjust to the dark "ambient lighting" and then try to "attack" your friend. Lighting and strobe have very different effects. But your just walking back six paces straight in from of him. Then all he does is hit you with a bright light with your eyes closed then you pull out your light then hit him center mass. Well anyone can walk backwards and keep there eyes closed and stay right in front of your target. If your really put some real sim into it you will realize the real outcome of this sim will be real different.

I have also tested the difference between constant and strobe and strobe is much harder to see through however any light you hold is a target for a firearm whether it is strobe or constant. Hold it out at arms length from your body to the side, if at all. Otherwise all your doing is giving a target. Hint: while your giving the bad guy a target make sure you have a weapon in our shooting hand, loaded and safety off.

Bro u and I think alike. This is literally my plan too if an attacker was coming at me. They coming straight for the LIGHT Period. Does not matter if strobe or constant on… they coming at us. So… like you said the light we using is secondary as a distraction and primary is the other hand. Right on brother and be safe out there

In my way of thinking the steady beam of light is the most important because it provides the most consistent blinding while your other hand could easily be producing (from your pocket, waist or holster) your defense of choice without him being able to see that you were doing that. Then turn off the light and show him One... Last... Strobe... lights out.

    • @giveitarub7215
      @giveitarub7215 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Strobe is better for disorienting though. Sure a nice bright light will be hard on the eyes but a strobe is meant to disorient someone by disrupting the images going to the brain.
My buddy recently did some guard training and someone had a military grade flashlight with a strobe function and he used it on my friend. He said it was like being stunned and would not want to do it again lol

My wurkkos ts10 is set up with a pretty fast strobe interval thanks to the anduril ui, and I think that helps with my disorientation and time distortion I like to test strobe light by running from and towards what would be a self defense situation in hallways and outside, from what I experience it’s best for creating distance but for actually defending yourself a long turbo at medium to clore range with disable their focal point and give you the advantage. Great video btw

To me, the question is which light would most disrupt the accuracy of the assailant’s aim, and ability to see other things around them. So maybe repeat the test with an airsoft pistol and see if one or both disrupt your aim, and if so whether one is more disruptive than the other.

Problem with this test, it assumes you as the defender stay in one spot. When you actually do tests in your home attempting to defeat an intruder, I found it much more effective to blind the intruder with the strobe, then move locations and setup in a kill zone. As the attacker, it was easy to fire directly towards the light, but when I got blasted and the light went off, I was so disoriented for 10+ seconds. It was amazing the difference. Try real life scenarios in your home with nerf guns and flashlights. It is best kind of training I ever did. You create your kill zones in your home, look at their kill zones when you come to investigate. In my previous 2 story home, I found it best to sit and wait upstairs. The minute I would start down the stairs, I was entering their kill zone. You could hear where I was and blast through the walls and it would definitely do damage to whoever was on the stairs. Burst lighting to get your target, then lights out then shoot. This also helps you know where you can not shoot, because of collateral damage behind the target.

There are two elements----1 blinding from brightness 2 disorienting ----get 1 with high only and get both with strobe
I have used both in self defense scenarios and both worked----but now I carry a Powertac with direct to strobe flashlight as primary defensive tool---Klarus I tried but the gas pedal strobe button activates all the time in the pocket---not good

    • @michaelomalley592

Agreed. Solid light does affect night vision, however our eyes can quickly recover. The strobe doesn’t allows the eyes to adjust or recover.. this in turn is excellent for when you determine your assailant is Armed being that their tracking and target acquisition will be substantially diminished.

first, glad to see you were smart enough to close your eyes!!!! There is no point in damaging your sight to show what your video did! As someone who uses my flashlight daily for work and also consider it an important piece in my self defense arsenal.
I personally want and use the strobe feature on any tactical light I carry. I believe there are times it is very effective and useful. I also have to have and use the moonlight feature on any tactical light I carry. in any situation it is good to have options because sometime I will need moonlight and other Turbo blinding brightness. I think the strobe has it purpose, but I wouldn't carry a tactical light that just had strobe, not would I carry a light tactical light that just had one setting.

Thank you for watching and commenting!!! You bring up a good point! The point of this video was not to show how the difference between straight light and strobe affects the attacker, but the defender. Many defenders argue that strobe is just as disorienting to themselves and therefore should not be used. My eyes were diffinitely closed brother!!! Hahaha!! We love the feedback brother! Thank you for being a part of our channel!!!
