When we were kids we lived with my father's parents. We were so poor that about all the meat we had was wild meat given to my Grandmother. She was a great cook. At around 69 years old she was raising 5 kids. Thank the Lord my Grandmother opened her home to us. We had nowhere else to go.

Cann't tell you how many times I had to make the turkey gravy at Thanksgiving and Christmas time for friends who never learned how to make gravy. Mom had to go back to work when I was in 8th grade and my sister and I did the cooking for our family of 7. We had water gravy with almost every meal and kind of meat! One of our favorite meals was left over roast chopped up in left over gravy over torn up white bread with buttered green peas. Momma said a roast is always better on the second day. My Dad and both Grandpas were big hunters and fishermen ! Momma said all of their meat was wild during the Depression and what ate depended on what grandpa found when he hunted after work and on weekends. They lived in small city outside Pittsburgh Pa. They were blessed to feed a family of 6 and many strangers who came to their door asking for food! Dad grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin. He said his Mom would cook anything he brought home and always praised him. One time she came to visit us in TX during quail season and she fried up a mess of quail. They didn't have quail in Wis and she thought they were great. The tiny wishbones were so cute to her she took some home. God Bless

My Dad and my brothers were always hunting squirrels or rabbits, I love them with gravy and biscuits. That was the only meat we had. My Dad was a coal miner. We were poor. And of course we had water gravy. Back then Mom would buy cans of pet milk to make gravy when she could.

My mother sucked the brain out. My brother ate the squirrels but us girls wouldn't touch them. Same went for rabbits. Only time she would cook a separate meal for us. Usually you ate what was on the table or you did without. I did try rabbit after I got married. It was good.

Maybe it's a good thing to have hard times, perhaps it's just what we need to come together again as a nation rather than a nation divided. To get back to some basic values of family, community, and treating each other as human beings, not as the enemy.

We were raised in a coal camp & saw lots of hard times (we also had squirrel & gravy)... during those times families really appreciated getting the supplemental commodities. I loved those big blocks of american cheese, the peanut butter & mom would make the best bbq's with those big cans of beef. Thinking back those hard times were the best of times.

Please make more videos like this where you all sit down and eat while you tell how you grew up, etc.!! I loved listening cause it brought back so many memories of my family gathered around the supper table! There was 6 of us and we ate many, many meals of squirrels and gravy and biscuits. My daddy and brother were big squirrel hunters. Mama always stewed them in the pressure cooker and then made gravy from the broth. I loved eating the legs and tenderloin!! For the 6 of us, mom would cook 3 or 4 squirrels. My older sister and brother always ate the heads (brains and tongue) but I never wanted to try it. I grew up in the 50s and 60s, but my parents were married during the depression and went through some really tough times over in the mountains of southwest Virginia. So I know squirrel meat was a sustainable food back in those days, sometimes a chicken. Mom had a Jersey milk cow and chickens so, as you two said, lots of meals was just gravy and biscuits with eggs. Soup beans (pintos) and cornbread was another sustainable meal. I hope the coming food shortage won't be as severe as things I'm hearing, but the Good Lord will supply us if we trust in Him.

I've been raising them for close to 3 yrs. It's a dense meat, eat less than what you eat for chicken. If you get upset stomach, it's bc you're not use to it. 2nd time you eat it you'll be fine. Quail is great to raise for eggs n meat, quick turn around. Just put 60 of our eggs in incubator today, renewing some cages and fill freezer.

I like my gravy brown & water is good to make brown gravy with & it's so good with homemade biscuits. I loved this video. We had a lot of venison to eat too! My dad always furnished wild meat when we needed it & my mom was an excellent cook. We never went hungry...thanks be to God!

We’ve been watching y’all for a bit now, and love your content. This morning though, it resonated with both us. Which prompted me to comment. We were both raised “poor” and didn’t know it. Hubby was raised on a dairy farm, with that being the only income. Both my parents worked low income jobs. Neither of us did without. My father, taught us how to fish, hunt, gather wood, and many other ways to survive. My mother. She taught us how to make meals from practically nothing. Squirrel, rabbit, venison, and fish were many times the protein on the table. The water gravy y’all make, we knew that as brown gravy. And we still make it today. So yummy. We are both so thankful that with the way we were both raised that we were taught to make do. And that is what gets us through along with our faith in God. He provides for the sparrow, how much more would he provide for us💕. Blessings to you both for central PA.

Think farmers market offering corn, tomatoes, zucchini, squash, taters, cantaloupe, watermelon, peaches, and peppers ... and blueberries and blackberries.
With the squirrel stew, add sweet potatoes, fried potatoes with onions, macaroni and cheese, or turnips.
Don't forget tomato gravy, biscuits, and an egg dinner.
Also, don't forget sweet tomatoes and pasta stew.
Think of the passarounds at Lambert's, fried potatoes, fried okra, cabbage, macaroni and tomatoes, apple butter, molasses, and rolls. For meat, think rabbit, squirrel, turtle, goat, and fish or seafood caught. Also, chicken, turkey, quail, gizzards, livers, and eggs. And boiled peanuts.

She’d cook up the rest for supper, including the heads with the brains inside and use the salty, peppery, broth for making dumplings. The gravy it made from the dumplings was my favorite poured over a hunk of cornbread ! My grandfather loved the brains! Good memories 🥰

You two are such a blessing and a joy to listen too! I grew up in a house of 6 kids and 10 on most weekends. We always had something to eat. It may not have been fancy but we didn't go hungry. My oldest brother brought the rowboat out and set lines for carp. He'd bring them home and dig a hole in the garden to place them in so Mom could plant tomato plants, etc. We got flooded out of our home twice while growing up and got shipped out to neighbors who lived on higher ground. We thought that was a party but looking back at it, it was a miserable time for my folks. There were times my folks had some money for new/used bikes but most of the time we didn't know any better that Mom and Dad struggled. Our parents are gone now and one of our brothers. I'm the youngest at 59 y/o but if life becomes tough for any of us, we are always there for each other. I wouldn't change a thing growing up. We are all the better for it!

My parents were avid hunters and fishers, and my mother was a wonderful cook who made all that wild game and fish into what seemed like a gourmet meal. We ate squirrel, rabbit, grouse, duck, venison, walleye, northerns, trout and smelt, plus they had a huge garden that we would can all during the fall harvest. They were sustainable and organic in the 60s before it was popular! It was just a way they fed their young family.

This brought back so many memories! I was raised by my grandparents who grew up in the hills near Dayton Tennessee. We were painfully poor and many times relied on the squirrel grandpa shot in our woods behind the house. Grandma would make a big pot of potatoes and riv'lins and a skillet of cornbread and we'd eat on that for 3-4 days.
I make cornbread and potatoes and riv'lins for my son's while they were growing up when times were tough.
They're all grown now, and work jobs that bring big money, but they always want cornbread and riv'lins when they come home to visit 😂

I am 82 today (June 21) and my mother always made sure to let me know that it was the longest day of the year in more ways than one. We left Chicago to live in Michigan on a small fruit farm that had a little bit of everything from vegetables to pigs, chickens, a cow and other animals and a variety of fruit. I also started my hunting around 9+ years of age and most of the year whether during the season or not. I also fished the rivers and ponds around the area if they were within walking distance. What wonderful times they were. Thank you for the memories.
