    Extremely honoured to showcase this prototype arcade game by the late chris Oberth on Neil’s channel.
    Also very excited to start this new arcade with such passionate enthusiasts Neil & Richard.
    It’s going to be amazing and I hope to meet everyone that comes down when it opens.

    Man, that parallaxing looks great in this game. Very effective with that many layers.

    • @danyoutube7491

      Yep, creates a nice sense of depth doesn't it.

    • @vaguerant
      @vaguerant 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it's really more of a creative use of a single layer. This seems to be using a linescroll trick, i.e. scrolling individual scanlines (horizontal rows of pixels) at different rates. This is the same trick that was used to create bending roads in games like OutRun. The limitation of the linescroll method is that because it's actually only one layer, there's never any interaction between the layers: they're all occupying a different place on the screen rather than overlapping each other.
      Conversely, Moon Patrol uses actual overlapping layers, which you could argue is "true" parallax scrolling. The faster, "closer" layers appear on top of the slower, "further" layers. They're fundamentally different approaches and personally I'd still have to give it to Moon Patrol for being the first, but it absolutely looks fantastic here.

    • @xotmatrix
      @xotmatrix 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@vaguerant I was going to point this out too. Moon Patrol is in interesting example because the two background layers don't just scroll horizontally at different rates, they also shift vertically, which really enhances the effect of driving over a hilly landscape. It's surprisingly sophisticated for such an early example.

    Man, I watched that auction when it was live and couldn't believe how little action it got and that it went so cheap. Really happy it got into Alex's hands. Such an underrated gem of a game. Chris made some really fun games. Glad this was saved.

    I was lucky enough to have my inaugural visit to the cave today and spent quite a lot of time playing this. It’s surprisingly intricate for an arcade game of this era and I found it quite addictive as well as challenging. I look forward to playing more of this curiosities once the new arcade is established. As a side note what an amazing job Neil has done with the cave. The attention to detail, and the scale and quantity of exhibits is amazing. Add that to a warm and friendly welcome along with bucketloads of nostalgia and it really is a highly recommended visit. Thanks to all there.

    As a PC gamer, that scrolling would've blown my mind back in the day! It's so smooth and parallax effect looks awesome. Arcades were more of a thing for my oldest brother, but by the time I was playing games in the late 80s/early 90s, they were pretty well on the way out here in Sydney, Australia. Timezone did try to make a bit of a comeback in the late 90s/early 2000s, not to mention Sega World, but that didn't really take off, and Sega World only lasted a couple of years before they shut down.
    Anyway, I can't wait to see how the arcade turns out. It sounds like a really fun way to use the space!

    the pseudo-parallax is a really neat effect, but it is 'pseudo' - it's not layers because they are not overlapping (i.e different screens on top of one another). Instead it moves a few lines of the same screen at different speeds. A similar effect can be seen in Jump Bug from 1981 where the clouds at the top move more slowly to give a feeling of depth. If you look at Moon Patrol on the other hand, it has backgrounds that actually overlap. Nevertheless very cool game.

  • @SeanOfEarth
    @SeanOfEarth 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Rescue doesn't actually use parallax scrolling.
    If you look closely, you'll see that none of the background layers overlap. It scrolls in strips. It's done by scrolling the entire background while the electron beam is between lines.
    Looks like it has a single background layer and a sprites layers.

  • @timvangenechten5258
    @timvangenechten5258 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The difference is that this game only uses 1 layer. The way they achieved the parallax effect us by shifting the background left or right depending on the scanline. You will never see one background object move over the other
    Moon patrol actualy uses at least 2 layers. You have 2 background mountain layers which move over each other. I'm not sure if they used a third layer foe the ground. They might have used the shift trick for this. Both techniques can be very impressive but the technique here does not need multiple layers to function.

    That headphone socket feature is actually pretty forward of it's time.
    In Japan especially many Music Game Arcades have headphone sockets so you can plug in your (hopefully really nice) headphones while music gaming away on the arcade cabinet. Sure something like "Rescue" would not need this but the idea is actually more solid as you go forwards in time and got "reintroduced" with last bastions of arcade game genres that take advantage of these types of things. Of course Japanese arcades are not also exactly as noisy, opting for silent or quiet attract modes rather than loud ones memetic in west as I understand and one view is to be polite and not let your gameplay be too loud for everyone around you.
    Few Japanese rhythm games are also fitted with cameras and video out ports to shoot your "skill play videos" to share online after you cut it and cleaned it up to best it can be, which I think is somewhat of extension of the headphone socket feature as this was something "Hacked on" to machines before it became much more supported by the game makers for the players.

    Rescue is very similar to Choplifter, in concept. I don't know about playability as I haven't played Rescue yet. I've only played Choplifter on the SG-1000 and then the Master System version. Rescue is graphically a lot more impressive than both of those, that parallax scrolling is amazing and super smooth.

    Sprint 2? Holy shit I'm there. That is one of my fondest arcade memories! And of course it leads onto Super Sprint which is without doubt my favourite arcade racing game of all time. It pains me to this day that when I had the chance to buy a superb condition Super Sprint arcade cab in the mid 90s I had neither the space nor the cash as a broke student at the time.

    I'm terribly sorry for disproving your theory, but there is just one layer scrolled in parallax fashion using beam chasing and adjusting the offset.
    You can talk about layers when they overlap on at least one raster line. When you look closely you'll see this is not happening here.

    Since this is basically Konami Scramble hardware, every line (or every two lines) on the screen can moved horizontally individual of all the others (that's how they did the cars, logs, turtles in Frogger, the only sprite in Frogger is your Frog until later when enemies as well as your ladyfrog appear), so the parallax scrolling isn't done with sprites but with background graphics.
    (btw. Galaxian Hardware can do this too, Scramble is based on Galaxian, Super Cobra is just Scramble with a bigger ROM space)
    Some Zaccaria pinball machines had headphone jacks.

  • @X1L3

    I used to play this as a kid in a taxi rank that was down the road. it has a bug in it, or an intentional cheat built in. I forget what you had to do, but it had to be done within the first three levels, or maybe the first level. If you did everything right then you'd be given what i think was 256 lives. The down side is the enemy bullets would move at lightning speed, so you couldn't avoid them. It was a good way to get a long way on it, but you could only ever get so far by doing it. The older guys who'd come in and play the games would offer me 10p to 'do the method' for them, so they could play it with all those lives. The down side was a 'dead leg' was in store for me if i failed to do it.....
    I need to run it on an emu some time and see if i can recreate the cheat again.

    Looks good and would be a fun game to play. So many people are used to cabinets meant for two players so it is understandable that the joystick on the right would be mistaken as the one for player 2. I wonder what chip(s) are used for the graphics. Perhaps a 6847?

    brilliant, subbed, i played asteroids at the ice rink in peterborough in 1980 or 1981 and never played another arcade machine, thinking about it i didnt like spending money on something like that and would rather save and buy my own games

    A very interesting episode and machine. I wonder how this arcade (which is great!) will affect the planned secret arcade - will they be combined downstairs and the upstairs space used for something else?

    1:32 So my rant :) if that is a pool table that is going it, then it MUST and that is MUST have room on all 4 sides for you to use a full size cue and to NOT hit the wall :) its a pet peeve of mine. Having grown up in the 80s and we had one of those table top snooker tables in the backroom. The amount of times you'd hit the wall it was super annoying.
    Then last summer my partner found a holiday home to rent for a week that had its own outhouse "games room". She said it had a pool table in it. Ooo, excited I got. Then arrived and paid a visit. They had small cues and full sized ones. I discovered I could only use the small ones because on one side you'd hit the wall, the other side you'd hit the window. Annoying.
    But I guess if you don't have the space small cues are fine :)

      Don't panic! The pool table is now upstairs in the lunch room. It was not easy moving that thing!
