  • Should the Oilers feel targeted by the Blues' bold strategy to go after both Dylan Holloway and Phillip Broberg? Why is it we don't see more teams use offer sheets to pry away players from other teams? TSN Hockey analyst Frankie Corrado and Bryan Hayes join SportsCentre to discuss.

2nd/3rd for two 1st round prospects (that you don’t need to wait 3+ years to develop)

2 years is the worst possible contract at that price for Broberg from the oilers POV. If it was 1 year, u might be able to swallow it since it doesn't impact Drais future contract. And if it was 4 or 5 years, 4.5 mil would probably end up as a steal in the latter few years. 2 leaves them in no man's land and means they more than likely overpay for an RFA defenseman who hasn't even played a full season in the NHL yet.

Offer sheets actually can/could be a corrective on spending 70% of the cap on a few elite players. If a GM manages their cap more conservatively, they can 'overpay' young RFAs and expand the prospect pool, with short-term deals - this works, especially, for rebuilding teams, where the opportunities for gaining competitive strength are most welcome, very much in the spirit of a cap-limited league. Its just another dimension of cap & asset management discipline, that should be, well, mercilessly exploited competitively. It rewards younger players, puts a break, indirectly, on the highest-end salaries, somewhat anti-inflationary.

I say let them both go... They made their bed and now they need to sleep in it. They can watch their ex-teamates parade the cup around while they tank their value for their next contract playing on a losing squad. I would have liked to keep Broberg but no way he is worth 4.5 at this point. Our window to win the cup is now. I would rather put that money to fill holes down the stretch to win the cup this year. 4.5 would get us a pretty good experienced D (maybe even a 6 mil guy taking a 1year discount to have a chance at a cup). IF Broberg pans out which isn't guaranteed (he played a handful of games with the best players). He wouldn't be worth that kind of money until after the Oilers cup window is over. I don't want to risk losing the cup because we are wasting cap on a future maybe. Do what's best to win a cup now, worry about the future later.

As a life long Oilers fan, here's my take on all this.
1- For an offer sheet to happen, the players have to agree and sign it to make them valid.
2-Connor and Leon have stated and been giving the hints that "the team" must take a small hit if we want this team to continue the path we're on and the momentum we've achieved.
Taking these two things into account, I say let both of the fuckers go! We have players that have proved they will take a bit less than they could get elsewhere in order to keep the teams momentum going. If two young players, or even just one of them, get their offer sheets matched, it will be the start of breaking the bond in the room.
Players wise, I would like to see them both stay as Oilers but after this, they have now decided that they are more important than the team so good riddance! The top two payers in the world along with others on the team are willing to make a pack and stay together but you as a young, still unproven player is going to break that? Cut the Cancer out and open the door for them on their way out, them staying will now hurt the team dynamic in the room going forward.
And for the two players...you will make a bit more now but the amount your Stats will suffer will create a long turn value for you and you would have been better off having this Oilers team on your resume for the remainder of your tenure in the NHL.
Just my feel on it all.

Holloway has had some flashes of brilliance but on a team with as much talent as Edmonton's top 3 lines, its hard not to look decent. I think the Oilers counter Holloway and let Broberg go, bring in a couple vets to training camp on PTOs and see what shakes out. There is still the cap space to think about, now and going into next year, if the oilers let them both go then they arent limited to trading Cody and can see how the start of the year goes with Kane on LTIR and if they need to make a knee jerk trade by November, also by that point, team management might have a better idea of potential trading partners.

He absolutely only has one playoff to back this up, but that's after years of steady progress to get there. He's the better bet at 4.5 than Holloway at 2. Holloway won't see the playoffs for half a decade after this move, and cost himself a fortune.
Good move by Broberg's agent. Terrible move by Holloway's.

@@alanpaul9481 So you're saying the only way Halloway is good is if he is playing with McDavid ro Draisaitl? Then why would the Oilers gm offer him more if that is the case. If the GM knows the player isn't as good as the stats show due to who he plays with he's not going to over pay for him. What you said makes no sense unless you think the GM is clueless.

Unexpected? I'd have been astounded if it didn't happen. Why would a team NOT make such offers?? If I'm a GM, (ya I know I'm not), I'd have done the exact same thing. 2 players who you could pick up who you know can play NOW, are just at the start of their skill level, are very young, who's upside is tremendous, and who you could get at a discount. It's a no brainer. I'm only surprised that just the blues had the foresight/ability to make the offers.
