I worked as a valet Parker at Trump Marina In Atlantic City… circa 2004-2005.. our minimum wage was 5.05 an hour.. and we only had to claim $125 in tips weekly… I thought that was a bit much until I was pulling that and more every other night … hell on a slow night I walked away with like $75.
I see why the base pay is so low.. because imagine if valet Parker’s were making 18.50 an hour plus tips.. you know what would happen then?
*No One* would tip.. trust me . The average Americans mindset shows that.

I've never worked in the service industry where I relied on tips but I just learned something about racial bias as it relates to tipping. Hearing that black workers were tipped less and people are more likely to tip people of their own racial caste isn't shocking to me. I've always felt that black people were short changed at every opportunity. I remember in college you would by your text books which were expensive and at the end of the semester you could sell them back but they really didn't give you much if you tried to sell them back to the bookstore. A lot of students would either keep their books or sell them independently by posting bulletins around campus so that they could get more money. The universities were ripping us off by selling us books that were extremely marked up and then only wanting to give us back a few dollars so that they could turn around and resell the books for a much higher price to other students. A group of black students did a social experiment to show the difference in what black students were getting back vs their white counterparts. White students received more money back for their books and so black students started getting their white friends to resell their books back to the bookstores.

I don’t hate it, but I most definitely don’t like it. But what I hate most of all is that restaurants now especially in the south are taking 18% gratuity or more from you when Eat it there restaurants about bar and grills. And then the waitress a waiter expect a tip from you all over again once they have taken out gratuity from your check that you must pay. To me that’s a form of stealing from me.

In that case, that's all they get. It's ironic that if gratuity wasn't automatic, I'd tip more than what was added. If you said you're taking x amount, that's all you get from me. I prefer a choice in how much to give.
Also, if service is exceptional, I'll ask the wait person if the restaurant pools tips. If so, I'll give the wait person extra on the side.

I left out their race over there but upon further reading, I thought it was important to include. Another concern with studies that rely on the subjects self reporting, is their tendency to under report their income to avoid tax burdens and to keep income under limits that would exclude them from government subsidies. People don't want to lose their Section 8 or EBT. A study that ignores these realities is not complete.

I hate, hate, hate when I receive mediocre or poor service, and am still socially guilted into tipping. I don't feel right if I don't tip. Specifically, because of the blacks don't tip stereotype. It's gone crazy though. I don't think I've been in a business r3ecently where they don't expect tips. Even if I drive to a place, order the food myself, wait, and carry my happy butt onward. That tip jar is just sitting there looking at me like stop being so cheap fool.

I have friends who own small eateries as well as many friends in the industry. The general consensus is Blacks and Chinese are the most demanding customers and the lowest tippers. Stiffing is considered the most insulting and detrimental insult to wait staff. This video was interesting and upvoted.

I don't really believe in tipping but I do sometime and I don't feel guilty when I don't. The cause like I've heard all the peoples in this comment and say you should pay a worker decent wages. Well, he wouldn't have to depend on someone tipping.

In America owners and businesses pay their workers unlivable wages then demand consumers pay tip to compensate for their lack of liveable fair wages! DoorDash, Uber eats, Grubhub and your local restaurants.

"Patron sharing" or "patron spreading" is the even distribution of (poor tipping) patrons, and is a well established practice in the front of house food service industry. If the host/hostess doesn't evenly spread the (poor tipping) patrons to server sections, they get an earful from the staff. Experience and psychology expose poor tipping patrons vs good tipping patrons.

I always tip the bus man or woman they most often earned the tip because they are the ones who bring your food to the table and clean up afterwards . The one taking the order has not earned the tip because all they do is take your order. It’s a shame that most people only tip the person taking the order. and they fail to recognize the person putting in the work. I always give the bus man or woman the most money. Gratuity goes to the person putting in the work. 😅 That’s my honest opinion. 😊

I am in my 50s... when I was in my 20s I had to be taught to tip. My family did not eat out maybe once every few years. Is it possible that is how part of the myth was started back in early 1900s. It wasn't that they didn't want to tip, it was that they didn't know they were supposed to. Especially if they weren't exposed to the dining out culture? And like everything else in the US, it was blown out of proportion?

I work in hospitality in NYC where there is a huge concentration of wealth and it's a union town with lots of unionized skilled, unskilled and municipal (government) jobs! So then, the people putting tips are part of their income, the Philly and ownership class that used to all but guarantee the money you've brought home would be more than enough to take care of yourself and tipping the way they used to. I've been working in the same building for over 2 years. It's as though after the pandemic people who can clearly afford to pay lots of money for a single night's day and I feel it's okay to just look at you. Say thank you and keep it pushing. I happen to be one of those High Brothers like Sinbad with some Jimmy the Greek-ass thighs so I've never worn skinny jeans but if you have... Now's the Time take them out of the closet because there are no more knots to be had. But certainly in smaller cities and towns, the newfound reluctance to tip would certainly hurt their "unskilled labor" much harder!

I’ve worked in many service jobs and even did DoorDash. So I’m very passionate about this topic. The common theme I noticed was that customers who didn’t tip (even when they live in a fucking mansion) were always the customers that expected me to go above and beyond …… for nothing lol. Yeah, I agree that tipping has gotten out of hand but from my experience, someone not tipping is a reflection on their humanity. Some people do not give a fuck about exploiting someone’s labour to get their chipotle meal delivered. I don’t think it has to be one or the other we can have high wages for workers and still keep tipping. Because then if a worker doesn’t get tipped it won’t be like “guess I’m not getting groceries today”. It will be more like, “ok, that’s cool”.

Good Info. Thank You. On your platform, you stated that their is a "stereotype" that black people dont like to TIP. That is a stereotype that I dont believe is true of us. I am black, my circle of family and friends are black, and we all TIP. I TIP much higher especially when the service is great. But I never go to any restaurant without a good Tip being in the budget... I would hope that you would take off the part in the title that states we dont like to Tip.... Otherwise, very informative...

The first time I ever knew anything about tips was about 1960. Back then, when you went to Morrison's cafeteria, your food was carried to your table by a black waiter. They made more money than the average person at their job. There was always a head man who was in charge. He hired and fired. These positions were highly prized because of the income.
