Are there any UNAM students watching? Did I forget any important facts?
Well, just to clarify something, UNAM is the name of the institution not of where you are, thats the main campus of the UNAM, CU or Ciudad Universitaria is where you are, UNAM have multiple University campus, (CU, 5 FES) high schools campus (9 Preparatorias, 5 CCH's) that all only here in the Zona Metropolitana, theres a lot more in other states and in other countrys.

Maybe just to add a sport fact. for all of those people who dont know. Mexico has a College (American style)football league since the 40's and pumas is the name of the team as same as the soccer team

Dhar Maitri yet most students at Unam don’t have a job. I Went to unam in 2012 and my friends couldn’t get a job with a bachelors they are still getting their masters, they are engineers. My friends from Monterrey tech did and so did my UAEM fam as pharmacist.
I ended up going to Cal Poly and the payment is ridiculous.. but make way more than they do and their degrees are worthless in the states.
J Rox That’s sad. I know what you mean though. I studied in the U.S. and the day I came back with my diploma I received three job offers. Not fair. I know. So many things are so wrong in Mexico. This being one of them. I did work for a few big companies but ended up going back to the U.S. and worked for another big company in L.A.

Easy Spanish That's an amazing feeling. I agree. But I have seen a problem too, some students think they are better than everybody and they see themselves as a part of an elite, which is very sad IMO. I've heard a lot of stupid assholes in the UNAM downgrading other great schools such as the IPN or the UAM, that's fucking stupid if you ask me.
Autonomous means it's independent from the government.

A free university, as many other in each México's states. It is not easy to be accepted as a student by that university UNAM, because the entrance exam is very rigorous.
And since it doesn't charge big money for you to attend it, there's no budget to make it grow. Life gets more expensive every year but tuition here doesn't. I think most students should be made aware of the importance of actually contributing a bit more than a peso to their school.

Actually UNAM and the other publicly-funded universities of Mexico City, and Mexico State (UNAM, IPN, UAM, Chapingo) are about the only "free" universities in Mexico, and it's a BIG issue for the rest of the students in the country. Tax money covers their tuition, their meals, transportation, and sometimes even housing. And they do receive a growing budget, which is the reason why they're able to afford good equipment, infrastructure, etc. Meanwhile, you go to any other part of Mexico and you're expected to pay from the equivalent of 50 dollars to 300 dollars per semester. Granted, it's still nothing by American and Canadian standards, but the inequality is the thing rants are made of. We don't get free anything and our research lines, infrastructure and other necessary educational equipment are constantly being threatened by budget cuts. The moral argument of paying 0.5 pesos per semester to symbolize everyone can attend university is complete bullshit. Yeah, anyone can attend uni, so long as it's UNAM, which means you have to move into CDMX and that is an economic reality most mexicans cannot even dream of affording.
I attended a public university in northern Mexico and I've friends and coworkers who have attended UNAM. Judging by their experience and my personal anecdotes working with them, I'd say it's actually overrated. The reason why it's the best university is because they put big money in to make that so while other unis have to make do with the scraps of a centralized federal budget.

rol de canela its still hard to get in the major you want through pase reglamentado, especialmente si es medicina o cualquier otra carrera o campus de alta demanda, yo estudié prepa de la unam y aún así tuve que hacer examen to get in. Its not that easy, even tho the majority of my classmates here are also from prepa o CCH, and taking into account that en la segunda vuelta del examen, de casi 700 aspirantes, nos quedamos 16.
So yeah, probablemente deberían restringir un poco más los lugares del pase, to give a chance to all the outsiders, but without eliminating it entirely
Hello! Wow, as you say in the video for the most mexican students the UNAM is like a dream. Since i was a child it was for me... in march 10th i applied and twelve days later i knew that i was accepted in the UNAM betwen more than 10,300 i was chosen and they offered just 162 places, i cried so much because my dream came true, i put so much effort and it worked, i'm so proud of myself and i'm gonna move to mexico city to study medicine in the best public university of Mexico 😍

As a Mexican, I wish Mexican TH-camrs did interesting videos like you, because most Mexican TH-camrs (not all but most) make videos about stupid jokes based on stupid shows like jackass on MTV or do video blogs about what they bought at the mall or just talk a lot of trash that doesn’t give us anything, just to mention a few, Eva de Metal, Pepe Problemas, Escorpión Dorado, Werever Tumorro, etc etc etc, Felicidades, you make great content.

You should check out BullyMagnets, they make videos about history and many of them are about the history of Mexico, they sometimes go to the historical places as well

I've paid nothing to attend college in the US. People are just lazy to apply for scholarships or financial aid. Of course not everyone qualifies for financial aid but a lot of those who do don't apply.
Taking the bus (6.50$) and subway (3$, with student discount) to school just one day is more expensive than my entire major, and im a chemist. The cost of the second semester chemistry lab is around 10,000 a student, and its one of the cheapest. Without mentioning that its like the 2nd or 3rd best university in Latin America.

I love the UNAM. I studied there in the summer of the early 1980s and lived in Colonia Condesa and Chipilco. Many of my professors were refugees from the dictatorships of the 1970s.

They've had an MD/PhD program going on for a few years now and I have worked with some of those students. These guys end up at Mayo Clinic, NIH, Harvard, Stanford, and other, equally prestigious sites in Europe doing a LOT of very high-level research. And still pay the same tuition. It's CRAZY.
I would like to explain what the “Autonomous” part actually means and it’s much more than just “freedom of speech” or having their own security system.
Education in Mexico is ruled by the Secretary of Education (SEP) which is the highest authority regarding education in our country. SEP is responsible for the education system, programs, contents, funding, school systems, hiring teachers and personals, etc. In all the public schools of Mexico from kindergarten to university.
By giving the University autonomy it means the college self determines. In other words, even when it’s still part of the public education system ruled by SEP, UNAM has its own board who makes the decisions from the subjects and content they teach, to hiring staff and how they decide to use public funding.
Of course there are still national regulations that still get decided by the federal government, but because the University is an Autonomous one it gets to work with the government to decide their own ways of ruling and functioning internally.
This is also very important because, perhaps you don’t know this, UNAM is not limited to College education. UNAM system is spread across the country with “extensions” of the university in different states (Like state branches) and dozens of high schools within the UNAM systems.
The Autonomous part mean all this schools are ruled by the college board. Which is why a UNAM high school might have a different curricula from other public state high schools.

Regarding what your friend was saying about UNAM: He said that after graduating you have a duty to do something that benefits society. Is that a duty that's enforced? Or is it more like a verbal contract or something that's strongly believed by the student body?
That duty is not enforced. For instance, when I graduated from college me and a group of friends created a software that the school of biological sciences at IPN uses for their research, that’s one way to give back to society for providing you free education
Tangerine Travels yes it is enforced.after you finish your career if you want your title and professional card (cedula) you have to make a year of not paid job in order to retorne to the society what they gave you trough their taxes for your education. It is called servicio sicial.
Not enforced. UNAM is the best university at México, if you study there you have an implicit duty with your country, that's what he meant. Anyway in most universities they will teach you everything focusing on giving you the "tools" for each student to be helpful at society and making our country a better place. Viva México!
The servicio social is a requirement even for people graduating from private universities who don't finance their education through taxes. What the guy in the video was talking about was a moral duty of giving back to society that's not enforced but voluntary.

you have the wrong definition of autonomous, autonomy in unam means we get to decide what new mayors we create and what old mayors go or what changes we make to existing mayors, it also means that the dean is elected by us and not by the government, but it doesn't mean that we are independent, cops can come in, cops come every Sunday to the soccer match, it is a comon mistake tho, a lot of students have the wrong definition
Lo de la elección del rector es engañoso, ya que todos han ocupado, antes o después, un cargo público. En cuanto a la seguridad en el estadio, es sentido común, ya que el 80% que asiste no representa a la comunidad universitaria. Creo que la autonomía reside en, como dice este chico, tener la capacidad de fijar una postura social, política y cultural independiente al triste régimen que gobierna.

As much as I know, Autonomy meaning for this institution is oriented to the self determination of their own syllabus for each bachelor degree, without prior approval of Ministry of Education.
Ulises Juarez It’s also related to the public funding. Autonomous means each public university is not only free to decide their internal protocols and regulations, they are also the ones who decide how to use the public funding they receive.
It means the autonomous universities are self determined.
I agree with what you say almost entirely. Soccer and football matches are an specific scenario in which the University requires assistance however policemen do not interfere with any other areas.

Nat von Humbolt No es que tengan menos, quienes son aceptados en Prepas o CCH son ya Universitarios. Y en el proceso de selección entré a través de la Prepa en COMIPEMS y a través del examen de admisión a la carrera y honestamente no tuve que ser ninguna de esas figuras que mencionas para entrar, sólo tuve que estudiar. La UNAM siempre intenta dar un cupo mayor del que puede para no dejar fuera a los que obtuvieron el puntaje, pero no tiene recursos infinitos, empezando porque no tiene un presupuesto infinito. Quien te quiera vender la idea de que hay otra forma de entrar aparte de los exámenes o es un corrupto o es un huevón que sobreestima su pírrico esfuerzo para estudiar. And that's just it.
Yo soy egresada de una vocacional y jamás estaría en contra de los pases reglamentados de los cch o prepas, finalmente los que entran a la superior con ese método se lo merecen, son chicos que desde que iban en la secundaria sabían sus responsabilidades y metas, se quedaron en la unam y se mantuvieron constantes para obtener su pase. El examen esta regalado para el que estudia, ya sea el de la unam o el de cualquier otra universidad, solo el flojo es el que se queja; quieren entrar a medicina con 80 aciertos. 😒
Jny Jan he visto gente que quiere entrar a medicina y no sabe sumar fracciones (for real tho) estaba en mi curso para entrar a la universidad, aunque soy de prepa de la unam no me alcanzó el promedio, y había varios que no sabían ni lo básico.
El problema no es tanto la falta de lugares y la demanda (que también hace falta muchísimo presupuesto para hacer otro campus para admitir a más personas) si no el nivel educativo de las instituciones afuera de la unam (no las vocacionales, si no colegio de bachilleres, cetis y esos)
@@piratekid1 no es cierto tanto el poli como la unam dejan entrar a cualquier que logre pasar el examen.
Pero el problema es que muy pocas escuelas preparan a los mexicanos para estas escuelas y su nivel de exigencia.
Y solo algunos están realmente capacitados.
Y no ayuda que la mañoria de los mexicanos (en especial los adolecentes) tengan una cultura anti-intelectual o acepten una ignorancia complaciente buscando no aprender y si lo hacen muchas veces se quedan con lo que en las escuelas les dan.

For the first point, thats why we actually call it CU, Ciudad Universitaria (University city) because the size and independence. Because UNAM, is CU and more than other 10 schools all over Mexico City that teach under UNAM's name.

It was really interesting, but as one of the comments said you only saw like 2% the Ciudad Universitaria campus is HUGE, it even has it’s own transport system (buses) the food is also really cheap and delicious, there are many sports you can practice, there is an Olympic pool, there is a healthcare facility, a store (like a target) a pet hospital, a lot of cultural and sport activities on Fridays at “las islas” there are a lot of murals, almost at every faculty (not sure about that word) has it’s own mural (medicine school mural is made out of glass and represents the four elements, the race mixture, and Mother Earth feeding her children). UNAM also has a bike service go go all around CU (for free as well). You can take language lessons for 1 Mexican peso (2 pesos if it’s Russian or German) per semester. Biblioteca central is enormous and it’s open 365 days a year. UNAM is the best school in the world! And once you are a part of it you can say out loud and fiercely “yo soy UNAM”

Super interesting video dan. I do know the UNAM Pumas, a football club in Mexico - never thought that this is a university - learned something new! Really like the history behind that and it’s awesome that the tuition costs are basically nothing! Great work even though the mic was unplugged 😂
Rob's Quest He forgot to mention (or perhaps he doesn’t know) that UNAM is not just college education. There are dozens of public high schools and adjacent schools that belong to the UNAM system across the country.
There are also “extensions” in important cities across the nation, meaning even if you are outside Mexico City, you can still be a UNAM student (hence the National part of it)

@@Eugene_Kum Well, not officially, the programs require foreign students to have a basic level of Spanish. However, no matter your area, the university offers permanent Spanish courses for all foreign students (free, I think).

Im a student in UNAM, im the third Generation to study in CU (the main campus) in my family and i can say that is a pride that goes beyond the academic part. A lot of children in México grew up spending their sundays in the gardens of the university and going to the activities and the museums inside the campus because CU its open to the public, anyone can enter the terrains no matter if you're a student or not. So even if nobody in you family studied there , there is some kind of mystique about this place in the subconscious of most mexicans. Also, even when the tuition is of only $0.25 (you can pay more if you want, most student pay more as a retribution) its extremely hard to enter tho the UNAM: only 8% of the people that applies for the exam makes it. I have several friends that tried 2 or 3 years in a row until they got a place in the university. This is not only because in the UNAM you can find people of all economic backgrounds, but also from all around the country, people from all the states move to México City just to study there. Its an absolute pride to be a part of CU, even in the richest families that can pay for a private university, getting into the UNAM is a thing to brag about... its a prestige that money can't buy.
The university also has a key political nature: ever since its creation it has been the most critical antagonist of Mexican Government, which more than one time has responded with violence to the student's protests, being the most atrocious one the students masacre of 1968, when the government responded with gunfire to a pacific student meeting, killing hundreds of unarmed people, a crime that was hushed for decades and its still a taboo topic in the government. So being part of the UNAM is not only a symbol of excellence but also one of rebeldy.

Hey mate!! The most amazing place you could visit within CU grounds is the Centro Cultural Universitario, a place which is definitely worth to show in your channel. I don't mean to spoil, but here's a tease: there's the first and most refined concert hall in Latin America: Sala Nezahualcóyotl (hehe, yup, I'm a musician, so I cannot help talking about it). Also, there are other halls designed for the Arts: Sala, for Theatrical plays; Sala Miguel Covarrubias, for Dancing performances; Sala Julio Bracho, for Cinema; and Sala Carlos Chávez, for chamber music. And the latest addition: Museo de Arte Universitario Contemporáneo, a Museum that easily rivals with that Soumaya Museum you once visited in Polanco. Near to the cited CCU, it's the Science Museum Universum and the wild, provocative and sensible intervention of the natural space: Espacio Escultórico, a place that looks like a modern Stonhenge, a dramatic scenery as if taken from a Stanley Kubrick movie -stone monoliths made by a sculptor, encircling a capricious formation of volcanic black stones.
I'm telling you, Ciudad Universitaria is much more than you could imagine. Gotta go there again and shot some more videos.

Ivan G its the Central Library, in Ciudad Universitaria, right infront of the school of philosophy and letters, next to the Law School and the stadium, across the School of Architecture, next to engineering, that's next to Chemistry thats next to Medicine (ok I'll stop now, iit was just to put an example of how big of a deal it really is).
And there's more murals all over the campus, even in the subway stations close to it, cause it was built during a time of "muralismo", and thats when Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Juan O'Gorman, Siqueiros and all those showed up. I recommend you looking up the mural on the stadium and the one in the Antonio Caso auditorium

After the political movement of 68 I understand anywhere in mexico the police can not enter to any university , here in north mexico studying university is expensive, for example medicine, engineer, is like $6,000-$7,000 pesos semester just tuition.

Thanks for the video Dan. There also another super important thing about UNAM: for decades, it has been the stronghold of left-wing ideology in Mexico City. Many left-wing politicians and leaders came from there and had a lot of influence on the city and the on country. If UNAM "falls", so will eventually and gradually the strongest left-wing thinking factory of Mexico as a whole. To a good extent (and thankfully), Mexico City is as liberal as it is because of UNAM. So, as you can guess, there has been an intense effort by the government to damp liberal thinking there by introducing state-aligned, high-ranking officials. Therefore, the 'Autonomous' designation remains at the heart of the UNAM existence.

PS. The mexican movie Güeros (2014) could be said that touches on the 1999 strike, it's never adressed but you can tell that was the foundation for the plot.

About the tuition cost, yeah that's the minimum but if you want you can pay more (as I used to go to private schools so my parents think that they at least should pay the inscription fee). But the 20 cents can only be paid in the university, if you pay for example un HSBC or other banks you have to pay at least $100 pesos (I believe). But yes, some people still pay 20 cents

Hi! The second greatest university in México is the National Polytechnic Institute, you should visit it! We have also nice contemporary art and the progress spirit. It's located in the north zone of the city, and once you are there you are also near to the most important religious center in México: La Villa de Guadalupe. It's hardly recommended to visit it, it'll give you a vision of mexican idiosincracy and faith. Again, if you want a tour I'll be pleased to give it to you. Greetings! 😀

Hey there! I'm student in the UNAM and I think it's interesting that you talked about the university's autonomy. What you said in the video is what everyone thinks what the autonomy stands for in UNAM, but it isn't true. The university is still part of Mexico City, it's not and independent body. The reason why the university is autonomous is because the university itself can decide who is the dean, how the budget is going to be distributed, education wise etc. It's not about being an independent state.

Most state Universities In Mexico have the word Autonoma In their name because they are institutions that govern themselves, as in they make their own structure and choose their staff , faculty and budgets. they may use teaching methods freely, choose content to teach freely and government may not impose any of it. It does not mean they are independent from mexican laws.
