I once read that Corey Taylor had heard a homeless man say: "You can't see California without Marlon Brando's eyes". He found that so interesting he wrote this song about it. I read that a loooong time ago, so take it with a grain of salt ;)
Disasterpiece is also CRAZY. The lyrical content is really graphic (it's essentially the inner thoughts of a kid who's relentlessly bullied in school) but god DAMN do the instrumentals, specifically the drums, go hard as FUCK.
Older Gen X here. I have always been a metal fan but avoided listening to Slipknot for a long time. Then when I finally listened they became one of my favorite bands ever. I love seeing people discover them too. 🤘
Older millennial here. I was the same. But I was a teenager when nu metal came out. It was new and everyone jumped on it. I remember hearing this song for the first time. Totally changed my mind and chilled my metal elitism out. 🤘
This song was what made me really love Slipknot. I was 10 y/o when heard it for the first time (10 years ago), then couldnt stop till this day. Listen more from the Self Titled, you wont regret
If I Remember correctly they said if they wore the mask it kept there identity sacred. But more importantly if I remember correctly by wearing the mask they could be them selves and nobody could judge them for who they really are
Dude,. so glad that you've given them a shot. I listen to everything from rap to jazz and classical pieces, but Slipknot is just something that never fails to hit when it comes on.
Bro this is one of my favorite songs EVER. It's so groovy to me, I love the screaming, the rapid guitar, it's just... It's amazing! It's also really, really fun to run from people while listening to this!
Man the entire self titled album is pure alchemical gold. Eyeless, Liberate, No Life, Diluted, Scissors - these tracks really shine but it's an album that you can press play. Loved the video! It'd be cool to see your reaction to the secret track on this album, Eeyore. :) You can find it at the end of Scissors.
If you want some crazy good lyrical bars I would highly recommend Psychosocial/ Nero Forte (also headbanging the entire time) if you want pure RAW Slipknot anything from their first 2 albums should please your craving :) Also great reaction!
I love your reactions! So honest and not scared to say when you don’t like something! Too many TH-camrs are scared to be honest incase they offend someone
Missed old slipknot energy, im 31 and loved them since i was 5 yrs old and this was the first album i listened to and the absolute best album by them , they brought alot of big energy and great highs and lows with a great lyrical creativity, they became famous in 99' at ozzfest which doesnt exist anymore unfortunately, look up ozzfest and the bands playin back then , your welcome
I re introduced myself into slipknot this past month after not listening for 15 plus years, boy oh boy it’s even better the second time around. What an iconic band with an iconic sound.
I'd be highly interested in what you think of Primus - it's different to say the least! Super popular band among percussionists and bassists. Most recognizable songs will be "Jerry was a Racecar Driver" and "My Name is Mud".
YO I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO SAY THIS TO HIM! PRIMUS IS MY FAVORITE BAND! the songs off of frizzle fry are my favorite, especially Frizzle Fry and Mr. Knowitall
First video of yours I’ve seen and idk if you usually go and look at lyrics like that but as a metal head I truly appreciate you doing that and breaking it down. Most people take metal at face value and can only hear the aggressive vocals but don’t bother to look more at it. Thank you
This was the first Slipknot I ever heard. They were playing a festival in 99 a short time after this album dropped, and they opened their set with this track. I had gone to see Primus, System of a Down, Machine Head, and others but left blown away by these guys. Bought the CD at Newbury Comics the next day. Dude at the counter had no idea who I was talking about, lmao. To this day my favorite Slipknot song.
ozzfest 99. system of a down, deftones, godsmack, slayer, rob zombie. all were there, but i consistently tell everyone that slipknot's performance there blew every other band away and cemented their road to stardom. 14 year old me was so impressed, and paying to attention to the rest of the crowd walking away from the stage after their set, so was everyone else.
Understanding many types of music is what makes music great. Being open to new sounds and rhythms is good. Glad you can see what many people see, without bias. Great video.
Just found the channel being a Slipknot fan, it came up. I do have a band you should see (maybe you already have) called Jinjer. Lots to choose from but I love teacher teacher live. Jinjer is freakin amazing.
I remember listening to the CD for the first time when I was 13 and I was immediately hooked with Eyeless, Wait and Bleed and Spit it Out. I was so scared my mom would confiscate the album for being too hardcore that I locked it up somewhere so she couldn’t access it. 20 years later my mom found that said lockbox in the basement and I rekindled with the CD😅😅
man talking about their music being about bringing the energy, I got to see them live about 15 years ago and it was the craziest show I ever saw, they were acting like maniacs the whole time!! you should check out their "wait and bleed" next!!
I remember as a kid hearing this for the very first time and my mind was legit BLOWN !!!!!!!!! Ever since everytime I hear this song I still get that adrenaline hit and go CRAZY !!!!!!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Slipknot actually puts a lot into their lyrics, they take a very poetic approach burying a lot of meaning in metaphors so you can enjoy it breaking down they lyrics or listen to the musical energy or break down the musical complexities in the use of instruments. There's a lot going on under the surface.
Highly recommend Slipknot-Disasterpiceses Full Concert (Live in London 2002). That live performance was awesome. They just went there to destroy that stage and liberate the madness.
I heard you say something about them rapping in a previous video, so I figured I should say listen to "Spit it Out". I also saw a comment already say Disasterpiece so can't mention that one.
personally I think it means that you need marlon brando's eyes (eyes that have seen suffering and bullshit) to see the california (a person with a hidden agenda/false face) for what it really is and not just the facade
This gave me flashbacks to my 19 year old self working in a VERY uptight professional office setting with this as the ringtone on my Motorola flip phone, set to THE LOUDEST possible ringer volume 🤣
This is probably my favorite Slipknot song ever. This is the only album of their's I listen to still. But then again I only listen to really heavy metal (compared to this) regularly. Can't wait to see you react to the heavy stuff! Bwahaha 🤘😂
I remember when I first heard Slipknot. I was buying from a local CD store in Madison, WI and had tossed a couple of other CDs on the counter. I had chatted with the clerk as I came through before, and he reached over to a counter display and tossed this CD into the mix. Looking at it, I was all, "I don't know, bro." He just smiled, "Trust me." Popped it into my Discman after climbing onto the bus and HOLY SHIT! I caught them on their first tour with Coal Chamber, and their live show was INSANE! Been a fan ever since.
I was once listening to this song in a car, it was summer. My side window was opened and I stop on the traffic light and looked at the the guy in the car next to me. In this moment song goes MOTHER FUUUUUUUKEEEEEEEEERRRR=) I was so confused, but the guy in other car showed me horns( |..|.), blessthe guy!)
their 1st album (this song is from it) is really all over the place and i love it for that. also the band was originally 9 members, and 2 have since passed away.
This album sounds like it’s straight from the gutter. Just dirty, grimy, chaotic and raw. And it’s fucking lovely! It’s like you turned the corner into a dank ass alleyway and Slipknot is all set up there and immediately starts playing as soon as you take the turn. You’re like “What the fuck did I just walk into?!” 😧 Followed shortly by “Ok let’s fucking go then!” 🤘🏻🔥🤘🏻
I work on a Bering Sea Pot Boat and Slipknot is one of the best things to listen to while on the water hauling Gear the Rare energy of Slipknot will take you to another level when you’ve been up for 30+ hrs fishing with no sleep in sight
The message of seeing california thru brando's eyes fits because theyre also famous and corey empathizes with the lense of celebrities. This song was written early, before they even recovered from their years of struggle. Before they lost paul and began a new one.
Good stuff, first time seeing your channel. You see any of Slipknot's rivals at that time Mushroomhead. Another mask band, Mushroomhead- Solitaire Unraveling
about the Marlon Brando line, Corey said in an interview he heard a homeless guy screaming that in a corner. Says he laughed at first but then "the more you think about it the more it makes sense" and eventially used it in a song
I grew up listening to rap, pop, motown / r&b [from my dad] & EDM ish. I never really bumped metal until I first heard Slipknot's first single "Wait & Bleed" in 1999 from a CD single. I was into turntables heavy at the time & that's what drew me in to the band. Slipknot made me a metal head.
Slipknot is the band I turn on when I get pissed off at my family or people just piss me off😂 FYI: This whole first album is a banger. From Corey’s screams to Joey’s (RIP) incredible drumming
Vermillion part one is my shoutout to try as its a little more chill and emotional. Once you get through their old stuff you will find out that these guys have some insane range. And choose violence.
That weird drum break in the intro is the amen break. It's the most sampled drum beat in history, and it has been used in everything from Hip Hop to Breakcore to car comercials. It's from a Gospel/Soul/Funk record called Color Him Father by a band called The Winstons in 1969.
That self titled album hits hard coming out of the gate. From 1-6 are so good. Good working music, a little metal therapy….. however you deal with life.
Everyone's a metal head. They just dont realize it yet
I believe it's easier for people that are more connected to their "primal" side or physical mind 🤷♂️
Then you haven't met my dad if you think that lmao
I like that idea.
fr i’ve been saying this
.
"Are you playing a guitar that fast my brother?"
Slipknot-"YEAAAAAAAAAAAAA"
lol
as a guitarist that started learning guitar with slipknot…. trust i know
That YEEAAAAAAAAAAAAA was a "Here's your sign" moment lol

Just wait until someone convince him to listen to "DragonForce - Through the Fire and Flames"
He's gonna lose it! 🤟🤯🤘
I once read that Corey Taylor had heard a homeless man say: "You can't see California without Marlon Brando's eyes". He found that so interesting he wrote this song about it. I read that a loooong time ago, so take it with a grain of salt ;)
Yeah, that's the story I remember hearing about it.
I recall reading it was Joey but I could be wrong
It’s true. That happened when he was visiting San Francisco in the 90’s
Heard that too. Reminds me of the “welcome to the jungle” story from GnR similar situation
That's the story :)
Disasterpiece is also CRAZY. The lyrical content is really graphic (it's essentially the inner thoughts of a kid who's relentlessly bullied in school) but god DAMN do the instrumentals, specifically the drums, go hard as FUCK.
The whole IOWA album has to be the best display of metal drumming ever recorded. RIP #1
Mostly the first line that's really graphic 😂
@@p4fizzle real i know people love joey rip, but man i feel like they dont give him the credit he deserves. his drumming is INSANE
The whole Iowa album is heavy as fuck it’s great
Iowa was their sickest album. And their self titled album too. But Iowa takes the cake when you wanna go hard.
I miss old Slipknot. It was so chaotic.
The best of Slipknot. Period.
Straight from the go Slipknot
Thankful I got to see them in ‘08 with the famous lineup.
Dark dark stuff. Relateable in hard times.
But if they stayed the same, that's not being chaotic ;)
Back in the day, everyone's all about "SIC" but I'll never forget the first time I fucking heard Eyeless!!!!
I still prefer (sic), but Eyeless is still amazing.
@@waltysalamander The mix of drum'n bass with guitars is what got me with Eyeless... but the entire album is amazing, hard to pick a favorite
Most people who don't listen to Slipknot would HATE some shit like this. Appreciate your openness. Much love
Older Gen X here. I have always been a metal fan but avoided listening to Slipknot for a long time. Then when I finally listened they became one of my favorite bands ever. I love seeing people discover them too. 🤘
Same, I refused to listen to Nu-Metal for so long due to stupid prejudices.
Older millennial here. I was the same. But I was a teenager when nu metal came out. It was new and everyone jumped on it. I remember hearing this song for the first time. Totally changed my mind and chilled my metal elitism out. 🤘
Younger gen x, even in 1998 I was like, Who the fuck and What the fuck. 😂
Dude I’ve been a fan since I was 12. I heard them on a radio when I was visiting Florida. I’m 25 now and haven’t stoppped listening
It's one of those bands that I dunno why seem cringey if you haven't listened to them but they're actually good
You gotta give 'Left Behind' a listen. To this day it still defines Slipknot for me
As I close my eyes
shit song. Slipknot = 1st album

Im 13 and im obsessed with slipknot.
I first heard them when my dad started playing it while cooking and i fell in love with it the first time
Ha that makes me feel really old
You gotta check out “Snuff.” One of the most heartbreaking songs ever written and a complete 180 from what you’ve heard so far.
Absolutely came here to say this
This song is their musicality turned up x10.
It's gotta be the live version with just Corey and his acoustic guitar
If I Remember correctly they said if they wore the mask it kept there identity sacred. But more importantly if I remember correctly by wearing the mask they could be them selves and nobody could judge them for who they really are
get him onto the hard stuff first mane
Can't wait to see you reacting to People = Shit or Spit it Out!! 🔥🔥🔥
Yes! Those. I second this
Been a fan for 20 yrs. Eyeless has always been my fav.
Yes, this shit is so fucking raw! Talent and emotion is so next level on this entire album. It gets me pumped that you dig this
Joey was a beast on the drums 🥁
Been listening to Slipknot since 2003. One of my top 2 favorite bands. The other is Slipknot. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
