Beatriz of Dia - A chantar m'er de so

  • The Comtessa de Dia (Countess of Die), probably named Beatritz or Beatriz (1140-1175), was a trobairitz (female troubadour). She is only known as the comtessa de Dia in contemporary documents, but was almost certainly named Beatriz and likely the daughter of Count Isoard of Diá (a town northeast of Montelimar in southern France). She was married to William of Poitiers, but was in love with and sang about Raimbaut of Orange (1146-1173). Beatrice's poems were often set to the music of a flute. Five of her works survive, including 4 cansos and 1 tenson. "A chantar m'er de so" is the only existing song by Beatriz which survived with music.
    The song is taken from the album "Le Royaume Oublié - La Tragédie Cathare" (2010). Pictures feature Eva Green as Sibylla, Queen of Jerusalem, in the "Kingdom of Heaven"

    Imagine being so mad at your boyfriend that you compose a jam like this, give it to a performer, and send that performer to your boyfriend's house to sing about how mad you are at him. Damn.

    Translation:
    I must sing of what I do not want,
    I am so angry with the one whom I love,
    Because I love him more than anything:
    Neither mercy nor courtesy moves him,
    Neither does my beauty, nor my worthiness, nor my good sense,
    For I am deceived and betrayed
    As much as I should be, if I were ugly.
    I take comfort because I never did anything wrong,
    My friend, towards you in anything,
    Rather I love you more than Seguin did love Valensa,
    And I am greatly pleased that I conquered you in love,
    My friend, because you are the most worthy;
    You are arrogant to me in words and appearance,
    And yet you are so friendly towards everyone else.
    I wonder at how you have become so proud,
    My friend, towards me, and I have reason to lament;
    It is not right that another love take you away from me
    No matter what is said or granted to you
    And remember how it was at the beginning
    Of our love! May Lord God never wish
    That it was my fault for our separation.
    The great prowess that dwells in you
    And your noble worth retain me,
    For I do not know of any woman, far or near,
    Who, if she wants to love, would not incline to you;
    But you, my friend, have such understanding
    That you can tell the best,
    And I remind you of our sharing.
    My worth and my nobility should help me,
    My beauty and my fine heart;
    Therefore, I send this song down to you
    So that it would be my messenger.
    I want to know, my fair and noble friend,
    Why you are so cruel and savage to me;
    I don't know if it is arrogance or ill will.
    But I especially want you, messenger, to tell him
    That many people suffer for having too much pride

      (Dr Prof Emeritus James Karl Lyon, UCSD),
      your translation is a fierce kiss & fond embrace through the veil.

    “The great secret from preventing love from making us unhappy is to try never to appear in the wrong with your lover, never to display eagerness when his love is cooling, and always to be a degree cooler than he. This will not bring him back, there is nothing for us to do then but to forget someone who ceases to love us. If he still loves you, nothing can revive his love and make it as fiery as it was at first, except the fear of losing you and of being less loved. I know that for the susceptible and sincere this secret is difficult to put into practice; however, no effort will be too great, all the more so as it is much more necessary for the susceptible and sincere than for others. Nothing degrades as much as the steps one takes to regain a cold or inconstant heart. This demeans us in the eyes of the one we seek to keep, and in those of other men who might take interest in us. But, and this is even worse, it makes us unhappy and uselessly torments us.” Émilie du Châtelet (1706-1749)

    Je chanterai ce dont je n'aurais pas voulu [chanter];
    Tant je me plains de celui dont je suis l'amie,
    Car je l'aime plus que toute chose :
    Auprès de lui ne me valent pitié ni courtoisie,
    Ni ma beauté ni ma valeur, ni mon esprit ;
    Car ainsi je suis trompée et trahie
    Comme je le devrais l'être si j'étais déplaisante.
    De cela je me console, car jamais je ne faillis envers vous,
    Ami, en aucune manière.
    Au contraire, je vous aime plus que Seguin n'aima Valence*
    Et il me plait fort que je vous surpasse en amour,
    Mon ami, car vous êtes le plus valeureux ;
    Envers moi vous faites l'orgueilleux en paroles et conduite,
    Et vous êtes affable envers les autres gens.
    Je m'étonne [de voir] comme votre cœur se montre orgueilleux
    Envers moi, ami, et j'ai des raisons d'en souffrir ;
    Il n'est pas juste qu'un autre amour vous prenne à moi
    Pour nulle chose qu'elle vous dise ou permette.
    Et rappelez-vous quel fut le commencement
    De notre amour ! Que jamais le Seigneur Dieu ne veuille
    Que la séparation soit de ma faute.
    La grande bonté qui demeure en votre cœur
    Et le riche prix que vous avez, m'inquiètent,
    Car je n'en connais aucune, lointaine ni voisine,
    Si elle veut aimer, vers vous ne s'incline ;
    Mais vous, ami, vous êtes si bien expert
    Que vous devez bien connaitre la plus parfaite ;
    Et vous rappeler nos accords.
    À mon mérite doivent servir mon prix et ma naissance
    Et ma beauté et mon plus parfait courage,
    C'est pourquoi je vous envoie en votre demeure,
    Cette chanson, pour qu'elle soit mon messager :
    Et je veux savoir, mon bel et doux ami,
    Pourquoi vous êtes si cruel et si farouche envers moi ;
    Je ne sais si c'est de l'orgueil ou de la mauvaise intention.
    Mais je veux que tu lui dises, messager,
    Que trop d'orgueil nuit à maintes gens.

      The text and melody are. But the style, instrumentation, and arrangement is speculative. Jordi Savall (the arranger) is playing viol here, an instrument which didn't even exist in the 12th century. The reality is, we don't know how this music was actually played or how it sounded. It's a matter of looking at what historical evidence there is, and then filling in the gaps with artistic license.

    its so incredible that this beautyful music was created in the same age where it was absolutely normal and fully common that men where slaying and slaughtering each other with swords, daggers and axes; it comes from the same time when people get burned alive on pyres on puplic squares...
