On rewatch The Social Network is leagues better than The Kings Speech. No competition

Zodiac is absolutely better than Social Network.

It’s debatable. I for one like the social network more but zodiac is also one of my favorite films

Intriguing. Point about Fight Club: The narrator/Jack doesn't think his boss is beating him up. He also is reminded of his first fight with Tyler is because he - like in this particular scene - was assaulting himself. Admire the focus from Kermode in this podcast. Howard has his moments too.

Jack seems really proud of himself for picking up on themes in Fight Club (its social satire and deconstruction of masculinity for example) that he apparently thinks are subtle and require multiple viewings to appreciate, but one of my issues with the movie (besides it being technically amazing to look at) is how completely on the nose and self-satisfied it is with itself. It's a fun movie to watch and its performances are solid, I don't dislike it, but its source material is pretty childish (one of the rare cases where the film is waaay better than the novel, which oddly enough I think is also the case with Gone Girl). I've just always felt like Fight Club was trying really hard to be another Clockwork Orange but the material itself just isn't up to snuff and all the subtext about masculinity and daddy issues and pop culture materialism is *so* heavy-handed that you end up with younger guys like Jack raving about how clever they are for "getting it." That's why every kid in college (including myself) had a poster for it on their wall and why Roger Ebert, in one of my favorite of his lines ever, said Tyler Durden seems like he tripped over a Nietzche display at Borders on his way to the Starbucks. I also think the film tries to have its cake and eat it, too, with some of the violence. But Fincher is such a brilliant director that he really elevates it, and in terms of tone and direction it's definitely entertaining. But I think "Se7en, " "Zodiac" and "The Social Network" are probably my top Fincher picks, personally.

See, this is interesting because I always read the unsubtly of the book to be the point - Jack is just as fake and plastic as the items around him. It's on the nose because it's supposed to be. The book also has a strongly satirical eye towards heterosexuality as well which the film does well to portray but it doesn't get picked up quite so much by critics. I mean, the central point of Fight Club is that Jack and Project Mayhem aren't heroes, they're just as fucked up and reactionary as the world around them because they're self-loathing men who've never connected with someone else.
