ERIC F I agree, they put Edgar Allan Poe but no Rozz, I'm tired of people not even in the subculture making lists like this because they miss huge icons like Rozz
Peter Murphy's voice gives me chills. I saw him live twice. YUM! I wanted to be Elvira SO BAD when I was a kid! Too bad some things just never did catch up. 😂
As far as that goes too many people ignore Charles Addams, creator of The Addams Family who requires Recognition, and do not forget Ronald Seral, creator of that other much less known Macabre Comic Strip : 'Saint Trinians' . Let us not forget Edward Gorey . The listing for musical influence was terrific but Gothic Culture has a much bigger pool of influence than just Tim Burton and E.A. Poe, the problem is too few look that deeply into it, some are just too young, others are just un studied . As you say Lovecraft cannot be ignored .
I agree, but I think this video may be more towards a more mainstream audience. Considering that, they did a pretty good job. Gothic literature would be a nice Top Ten list.
I get it. But, the reason why I said Lovecraft is because of how his works influenced a lot of people, so I thought they would put him in there because of that. :P
KeyOfTheTwilight I know a bunch of goths who are yet to read anything from him but I mean por did have an impact on near everyone making a pretty big impact on culture in general let alone the subculture, he is often the introduction to the gothic side of things for any babybats, he is taught in school, ya know, I agree lovecraft is influential I just don't think he is as influential as poe
The only one I don't understand at all is Trent Reznor. Personally I would've absolutely added Rozz Williams, Andrew Eldritch, and Voltaire to the list. I totally agree with Robert Smith being number one. While their music isn't goth, I definitely see how Alice Cooper, Rob Zombie, and Marilyn Manson especially had an influence. Marilyn Manson was and is a huge influence on me. Without him I may never have discovered goth at all let alone that it was something I identify with and something that would become a comfort to me. It frustrates me when people are elitist about not listening to or liking Marilyn Manson because he's not goth enough or too mainstream or whatever.
I agree with you - Rozz and Eldritch would have made great additions. And I had goth friends in the 90s who were listening to Marilyn Manson, so I he's been an influence for a quite awhile..
gothicsoulflower I was in middle school so it must've been the early 2000's when I got really into him. HIM was a big influence too. I have a giant poster of Ville on my door lol.
I consider Amy Lee and Evanescence to be "gateway goth" because I listened to them before I was goth and they probably had a major part in me eventually becoming a goth, I still love their music although a big part of that is just nostalgia for me
At first I was confused by Alice Cooper being on the list, but Alice Cooper did influence Alien Sex Fiend so I guess it makes sense. Amy Lee I guess can be thought of similar to Manson. Their music isn't goth, but both are sometimes mistaken for it, and I'm sure there have been some introduced to goth music through them. A part of me is slightly annoyed at the inclusion since there are so many other people that could have been used instead, but I guess since the two are far more mainstream I can't begrudge them being on the list too much.
I actually agree with what you said about Manson. but where I grew up, he brought out a lot of the goth scene along with NIN. Most people wouldn't agree with this, but heck.. I am happy for Tim Burton. I remember being a kid when the crow came out and I was happy I saw the crow soundtrack with the cure being the first song on the list. Burn was my fave song for years. I also agree that Smith has a classic style that can continue into the ages. I am proud to state that the kids(mine) love beetlejuice also. When I started the goth scene is was Suzie and Joan Jett. Amy Lee was evanescence and to be honest, she was main stream. Alice Cooper actually do influence a lot of goth, he is metal but he also does influence goth because of how he dressed prior to the 80's. He would wear gothic bondage outfits and various things. I even have seen Elvira with red hair, and in person at Toronto Comic Con. I TOTALLY FAN GIRLED OUT!
You saw Elvira?! I would have fan girled, too. Lol. I think Cassandra Peterson is actually a redhead, so Elvira with red hair (of any shade) would make sense. And I love me some Joan Jett! As for Alice Cooper, I was focused on the music but you bring up a good point on his spooky/macabre theatrics and his dark style and I do agree with you there.
They sure did which is a pity. He was a HUGE influence on goth, especially goths in the US. Now that you mentioned him, Rozz should of replaced Alice Cooper or even Aliester Crowley IMO.
I think they were also trying to avoid overcrowding the list with musitions which is why they kinda trew a bunch in as honourable mentions, they were trying not to make the culture look too 2 dimensional
I love Amy Lee. although she is not Goth. She has inspired me to be Goth. But I think they could have put a lot more people in it. Like Anne Rice, Stephen King, Bran Stoker,Elizabeth Bathory, Vlad Dracula (the actual Dracula instead of a actor although the actor is amazing) But I like it.
You cannot deny that she is a goth Icon I know Evanescence changes dear musical genre by every album the release but the thing that have stood out the most is when the band did Gothic metal so you cannot deny that she is a goth icon yes she is my queen so I would like to hear anything against her ...
I feel like her fashion sense is gothic and her music tends to have darker elements. So I’m not mad that she’s listed as an influencer, especially as she was an introduction into goth style music for any Emo kids who found goth later on
Bela lugosi is in a movie called Plan 9 From Outer Space Directed by: Ed Wood Bela Lugosi was casted in the movie after his down fall in Hollywood. Ed Wood wanted to cast him after Lugosi became to depressed to cheer him up. The movie was intended to help him get back in spirit of acting. Sadly before the movie was finish Lugosi passed away. But the movie was still published in his memory. many actors with bad back lash from media (etc) were casted as well. This movie is labeled one of the worst movies ever made ment to be serious it has turned into comedy classic.
I wonder why Goth icons like Robert Smith always denied being Goth, I suppose for fear of limiting their appeal. I see what you mean regarding poe. He would never have said "oh I am sooo Goth" lol
industrial and industrial based artists were a big influence on Goths from like the late 90's and early 00's same with kind of....'goth lite' bands like Evanescence since they were so available to the mainstream at the time, (although a lot of people from that era that don't like her because Evanescence is sir of associated with annoying 14 year old Mall Goths ) which is why they tend to get put on lists like this (and Marilyn Manson is a huge fan of The Cure)
Amy Lee is lead singer of Evanescence; there music has more than a few style's incorporated in it. There early music before they became popular has a very haunting quality, their first CD (fallen) was a major hit when it came out and has a very pop goth metal quality to it. Their 2nd album (the open door) incorporated very awkward Victorian classical sounds with the alternative metal music. Their most recent one which is self titled had a much more electronic sound. I wouldn't call their music "goth" music but it's music that is goth appropriate and has gothic influence. As for Amy Lee herself the reason she's listed is because of her style specifically when she's on stage. She's always had that gothy style that is very eye catching. Early on she did more modern goth with bondage pants, blouses with pin's in it and lace arm bands with a teased ponytail. Later on she went more into Victorian style mixed with shredder style so she would have bustle skirts with uneven layers and torn up tulle paired with doc martens and a fancy corset. She's actually one of the people who brought the corset back into style. Her stage look has a lot of crazy aspects to it but it's all very dramatic, kind of goth glam shredder pixie. I'm sure you've already heard her music; it can be very hit or miss for people. Either you love it or you hate it no shame in either.
In my own personal opinion, I think that some unintentional Gothic icons are David Bowie Johnny Depp Johnny Cash Jim Morrison Wes Craven Tim Curry just to name a few, others icons, who weren't mentioned, but were reasons why I dressed Gothic, growing up, & still occasionally do, are Vincent Price, Pete Steele, Dani Filth, Boris Karloff, & the Undertaker. I'll also admit that, Cyndi Lauper influenced me, sorta, for Gothic/semi-punk style, but that's just me.
I highly recommend watching Sweeney Todd, but I personally loveee that movie. (It came out when I was in 8th grade (I'm still fairly young: 22 years old) but I became obsessed with it) It is a musical though, it was on Broadway for a while, so they do sing a lot of the movie.
Cool. I don't mind singing in a movie, such as musicals. As long as there's dialogue as well. I'm talking about "operas", where they sing every line for the entire movie. :/
I like the list. I agree with your two choices for top two. Lately it seems like not a day goes by that I don't listen to 'Cities In Dust' at least once. I love that song.
Hii! I just stumbled across your channel and I fell in love with your videos! You just gained another subscriber ^^ and yes Marilyn Manson isnt goth, but he has influenced me so much in who I am today :3 hes my idol lol
Do a video of you reacting to Amy lee. Please 😂 you should react to songs/music videos like lithium, bring me to life and sweet sacrifice! It's be a fun little vid for a real goth!
Manson & Dita (when she was with him) introduced me to goth even though his music isn't goth and I think she was simply posing as goth because she loved him. They were the gateway to me realizing I could dress in all black and it had a name. I would have put Siouxsie as number 2! Siouxsie and the Banshees was my introduction to real goth music. Have you had a chance to watch Sweeney Todd yet? I love that movie. ☺
Haven't had a chance to watch Sweeney Todd, yet. It'll probably be seen during one of my binge watching days. And we goths are introduced to the subculture in many different ways. I didn't realize it at the time, but my gateway to goth was Depeche Mode. They're not goth either, but some of their songs are pretty dark. :)
I made my own list but I did eleven because I couldn't do just ten. 11. Elvira 10. Voltaire 9. Bela Lugosi 8. Tim Burton 7. Edgar Allen Poe 6. Ian Curtis 5. Andrew Eldritch 4. Peter Murphy 3. Rozz Williams 2. Robert Smith 1. Siouxsie Sioux
I agree that I would never have placed Alice Cooper in the list but I do like him. And except Ian Curtis most of the 'Honorable Mentions' would never have popped in my mind with the thought of Goth. Marilyn Manson definitely influenced a lot of people to look into the Goth world. Love him too. I thought the list was interesting and I definitely agree with #1.
I think they did a good job with this list and I was SO happy with their choice of #1. Some of honorable mentions are questionable, but at least they didn't pick crappy artists.
You need to see Sweeney Todd!!!! It's a lovely film....they don't sing through the whole movie. Definitely agree that Siouxsie Sioux and Peter Murphy should've been WAY higher on the list.
Yes, Alice Cooper WAS a big deal " In His Time " for those of us who are older who remember him from the 70s he was possibly the most outstanding figure on this list in regards to Musical Talent regarding Goth influences . Is he said himself everything changed when in a sea of Musical Good Guys he decided that he wanted ho be the Snidely Whiplash of music, the Dark Villain .
Gareth Morgan I'm 19 and love his shit, like he is definitely an influence on my experience as a baby bat, people should really stop taking swings on the para-goth, like just because it isn't goth doesn't mean it can't be a good way for people to find goth
One Goth Icon that SHOULD have been on this list is the man who invented the goth look. Dave Vanian of the Damned. s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/6a/a2/53/6aa2535326ee3c964a296cf34a98d0f6.png And they also should have at least mentioned the legendary Gary Numan.
I see a ton of people complaining or at least commenting about various bands or munitions they would put in, but I would disagree, im not saying they had no influence on th scene, but If we talked about every band there would be no room for other inspirations, I think it was wise to limit the number otherwise the list could come off seeming to limit the culture and paint us in a 2 dimensional light
The didn't mention bram stoker with out stoker then no Dracula no bela lugosi as Dracula. bauhaus wouldn't of done bela lugosi's dead. There might not of been vampire movies. Also should of been mentioned Andrew eldritch, specimen at the batcave , queen victoria the victorian era she wore black, vlad janicek and damien Deville nosferatu.
I personally like Alice Cooper. I almost stepped on him near the Montblanc store in Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall. at 6' 209lbs, I am a large man, and at the time I was 60 lbs heavier. Alice Cooper is tiny. Neither one of us was paying attention. I apologized, and he laughed it off. Ian Curtis had considerably more influence on the subculture than Alice Cooper. Also, Vincent Price needed to have at least an honorable mention.
Alice cooper and Marilyn Manson are metal. NIN is definitely industrial, which i guess could be like an offshoot of goth. Siouxsie Sioux should definitely have been higher on the list, but I’m glad Robert Smith was #1
I honestly believe Andrew Eldritch should have been on this list. If not as an official number, an honorable mention at the very least. ....I've never even heard of this "Trent Razor" fellow, until now.
Oh, okay. Thank you! I haven't heard a lot of Evanescense and I know there's debate on whether they're goth or not. Either way, I have a little research to do. :)
+gothicsoulflower (Dasia Denise) now you know. We also have ex-voto another goth rock band. goth is about enjoying the darker things of life right? and a lot about music but Its about the style too but a lot music.
I think that You are Awesome though. I don’t want to come off as You are wrong but just much Younger than Some of Us Old Buggers that remember way back When?! By the way, I was very Young when Alice Cooper or Black Sabbath came out and learned more about this as a young 12-13 year old Girl in 77-78. I told You that I am a lot older. I was born in 65 making Me 55 as of last month. Anyway, thank You for sharing this list with Us. I hope that I came off as judgmental. I just meant to be informative. You Rock, Girl!!! Or, Sorry, You Goth!!! 😊👍🏼👋🏼
I think Ian Curtis should be #2 or even #1 and Trent Reznor should be higher, Industrial/Ambient Music is huge in Goth Culture and Trent is the mastermind behind

I guess since I maybe 2 decades older than You or more; I have to say that I believe that Alice Cooper could be considered the first real GOTH Singer, Song Writer and Musician. If You listen to Some of His earliest work; since there were no technical Goths; His earlier songs; I would consider totally Goth. He wrote Dead Babies in the early 70s or late 60s. It was considered Horrible by The “Good, and Moral People/ Parents.” It was about how some Parents would put toxic cleaners under the sink without any locks and Children that got into them died from being poisoned. That and “Under My Wheels,” about wanting to run over a significant Other. Anyway, I am not saying that You are wrong just much Younger than some of Us Old Buggers. I really believe that Alice Cooper and Ozzy Osborne with Black Sabbath were the Precursers or Original Goths. In fact, when Ozzy was asked, “Why did Your band decide on the name Black Sabbath?” His answer was honest and said they had seen “People dressing up in horror costumes, Men in Drag Horror Characters and standing in long lines to see “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” He and His band mates could not believe that the fans of the movie were doing this and not for just Halloween showings of the movie. The movie was so controversial about a Woman that was a Virginal Wife, other women and it had gay or Homosexual People and Partners in Drag. That was seriously, taboo for the late 60s and 70s. Ozzy and His Band mates decided to name Themselves after the scariest Horror Icon that They could think of and that Was Black Sabbath. Going along the lines of People love or like scary or horror movies and scary names.
Who ever wrote this list clearly did not understand the Goth subculture. Alice Cooper and Rob Zombie are Shock Rock/Horror-Core, and have no business on a list of Goth Icons, just for starters. I wouldn't call Marilyn Manson Goth, either, but, I begrudgingly accept that along with Trent Reznor they inspired and influenced the Goth revival of the late 1990's. I feel like they left too many major Goth Icons off the list in favor of gothy pop stars. I'm glad they included Edgar Allan Poe, since he is the father of the Amercian Gothic novel, but I wish they included more actual Goth icons like Morrissey, Edward Gorey, or Gloria Swanson. I liked your response better than I did the original video.
S. M. Mannix I would disagree, I know a plethora of baby bats and all of us would agree that without these non goth stepping stones we would never have found our way, if the list was all goth musitions it would be reductionist. I view shock rockers as cousins and some of our closest allies. It may stem from my broadly alternative background (I am alot more than just a goth) but I feel we should not be so defensive of our borders, so what if someone likes emo music and goth music and decides to say they are both? It's not harming anyone, and while the industrial scene may have some bad apples isn't it just as well that it is revitalizing the scene and helping new people discover the subculture
No Rozz Williams from Christian Death/Shadow Project?? Probably the number one American Goth Icon. Often imitated, never duplicated!
I sadly have not seen Murphy live. I bet his voice is even more amazing live. And Elvira was the shit when I was kid also.
I don't know, I think they should've put HP Lovecraft in there too since they Put Edgar in that list. :P.
As far as that goes too many people ignore Charles Addams, creator of The Addams Family who requires Recognition, and do not forget Ronald Seral, creator of that other much less known Macabre Comic Strip : 'Saint Trinians' .
Let us not forget Edward Gorey .

As you say Lovecraft cannot be ignored .
I agree, but I think this video may be more towards a more mainstream audience. Considering that, they did a pretty good job. Gothic literature would be a nice Top Ten list.

Siouxsie would be 1 for me too. I love her so much ahhhhhh
Overall I'm impressed by this list! Murphy and Siouxsie should have been right up there with The Cure, though.
Agreed!
me and my god sisters have a black cat named edgar allan paws
I consider Amy Lee and Evanescence to be "gateway goth" because I listened to them before I was goth and they probably had a major part in me eventually becoming a goth, I still love their music although a big part of that is just nostalgia for me

I feel like Vincent Price should've at LEAST been an honorable mention. Love the video! And Watchmojo's video lol
No Sisters, Nephilim or The Mission? WTF?
Agreed! Sisters and The Mission are personal favorites of mine and were not included. I would of replaced Crowley with SoM or even Rozz Williams.
I actually agree with what you said about Manson. but where I grew up, he brought out a lot of the goth scene along with NIN. Most people wouldn't agree with this, but heck.. They missed Rozz Williams...
They sure did which is a pity. He was a HUGE influence on goth, especially goths in the US. Now that you mentioned him, Rozz should of replaced Alice Cooper or even Aliester Crowley IMO.
Yes, the sorting is a bit strange, as you said... I think they wanted to pick only the mainstream and most know artists from the subculture
That would make sense. I would have thought that Rozz Williams was more well-known, but I guess he's not mainstream enough.
I think they were also trying to avoid overcrowding the list with musitions which is why they kinda trew a bunch in as honourable mentions, they were trying not to make the culture look too 2 dimensional

Cure was my first concert at 9 years old I was so in love with him!!!!!!! I’ve always been goth at heart!!
You are my hero I’m multiracial and my mom never understood me and my love for gothic culture.
I generally liked the list but I think the Doors would have been a much better choice than Alice Copper.
Oh, I agree with that! Love the Doors and they're sound is more "eerie" than Alice. But I like both artists, so no harm done.
And that's the best way to enjoy music, IMO. I used to be "the music must be goth or dark or I'm not interested". Luckily, I grew out of that.
Bela lugosi is in a movie called

Ryan Siemens I understand Bowie and Morrison but they should have gone for Andrew Eldritch and Rozz before they even hit on Poe or Tim burton.
So glad they put Robert at number 1!!!!!🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
they do sing in the whole thing because it's a musical, but it's great.
I highly recommend watching Sweeney Todd, but I personally loveee that movie. (It came out when I was in 8th grade (I'm still fairly young: 22 years old) but I became obsessed with it) It is a musical though, it was on Broadway for a while, so they do sing a lot of the movie.

+gothicsoulflower (Dasia Denise) Yeah I get that haha. No, theres talking too.
Yeah I totally see Ozzy as metal, not Goth.
obviously
Yeah, he did have an effect on the scene tho
the first song i never knew who sung it , its has always been so pretty to me . took me 31 years to find out who sung it lmao. time to go download!!!
I breathed a sigh of relief when they chose Robert Smith for number one.
I like the list. I agree with your two choices for top two. Lately it seems like not a day goes by that I don't listen to 'Cities In Dust' at least once. I love that song.

gothicsoulflower It's almost like goth finds us lol! :)
Yes! So true.
Siouxsie Should have been 2 but the list isn't bad :)
Love your videos :)
Thank you and I agree. Siouxsie should have been a lot higher than #6. Robert Smith and Siouxsie kind of go together in my mind. :)
I made my own list but I did eleven because I couldn't do just ten.
11. Elvira
10. Voltaire
9. Bela Lugosi
8. Tim Burton
7. Edgar Allen Poe
6. Ian Curtis
5. Andrew Eldritch
4. Peter Murphy
3. Rozz Williams
2. Robert Smith
1. Siouxsie Sioux
I didn't like that they put Voltaire in the teaser, but not on the list.
I like that they put Manson on there but missed Trent reznor, while completely ignoring Rozz Williams who was a huge inspiration for both of them.
Where is Vincent price in this or would he be considered a horror icon?
I agree that I would never have placed Alice Cooper in the list but I do like him. And except Ian Curtis most of the 'Honorable Mentions' would never have popped in my mind with the thought of Goth. Marilyn Manson definitely influenced a lot of people to look into the Goth world. Love him too. I thought the list was interesting and I definitely agree with #1.
I think they did a good job with this list and I was SO happy with their choice of #1. Some of honorable mentions are questionable, but at least they didn't pick crappy artists.
The list should be named "Top 10 MAINSTREAM goth icons"
beeasaautiful
Jinx Dawson would have been awesome on that list
GORLLLL i have the same phone case!!
No Mary Shelley. No Fields of the Nephilim. No Gitane Demone. But at least, Peter Murphy.
they do sing in Sweeny Todd but it is amazing
Good to know!
One Goth Icon that SHOULD have been on this list is the man who invented the goth look.
Dave Vanian of the Damned.

And they also should have at least mentioned the legendary Gary Numan.
yea i definitely prefer vampira over elvira but sure
also do people even know any other the cure song than a forest
Amy lee is alt bordering emo (Im not hating on her I really love her voice) and trent was industrial as well as Marilyn Manson.
Cheyanne Starr Well said! 👍👍👍
Siouxsie Sioux should definitely have been higher on the list, but I’m glad Robert Smith was #1
Cassandra Peterson even still looks good to this day yummy
I honestly believe Andrew Eldritch should have been on this list. If not as an official number, an honorable mention at the very least. ....I've never even heard of this "Trent Razor" fellow, until now.
I definitely agree that Eldritch should have been included.
Amy Lee is female lead singer of band Evanescense i think
Oh, okay.
Agreed.
Amy was my gateway drug lol
Kitten5710 exactly, she may not herself be goth but she is a vital step for alot of the baby bats I know
I think that You are Awesome though.

The cure ❤️
NO vINCENT pRICE? WfT?!
S. M. Mannix I'm just pissed Peter Murphy was tenth and Andrew Eldritch and Rozz Williams were no where to be seen
The list is literally backwars. Excluding Smith.
Also, Amy Lee and Cooper? What the hell have those that made the list been smoking?
You can't say they had no impact though
