      Why can't you be color blind instead of focusing on color? People like you are so obsessed with color and it's extremely unhealthy and dumb. Who gives a fuck what color this woman is?

    • @ChanelofStuff
      @ChanelofStuff 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Because they're both people of color and they like to connect through this similarity in a subculture that is represented mostly by white people. You're the one who seems a little obsessed in stomping on her garden and having such a negative and "extremely unhealthy" demeanor. The person who uploaded this video was obviously happy about the compliment so there was no need to be so rude.

    After watching the men's 40 years of goth I agree that this one was a little more costumy. The pin up I was sad to see because in my head I was waiting for Rockabilly. But then like you said there were no really dark colors and it just didn't feel right. I do wonder why they haven't shown an all white look that some goths like to wear.

    As someone who wears Lolita she did terrible with it. There are loads of comments explaining what's wrong with it. Mainly the wig and the make up are really cringeworthy.

      LOL. I'm going to have to look further into Gothic Lolita. I know what is is and what it looks like, but I'm not into it so I wasn't sure what was off. I really appreciate the comments here explaining what was off about what was shown in the video.

    if you think pastel goth is bad wait till you see bubble goth XD from what i understand it's basically goth style clothing and accessories only with colors instead. spikey bracelets only they're pink or green or blue or whatever, big goth style boots only white or pink or cyan blue, leather corset top only it's pink or white.

    As an elder goth myself, I've seen Native American goth, Chola goth and African goth and they're awesome in how each incorporates the dark aesthetic with ethnic style. My personal goth aesthetic tends to be mostly literary, though I tend to wear cameos with everything, lol. Victorian goth and steampunk are natural extensions of each other so I don't know why there's even an argument. Heck, Pirate goth is a thing. Being a Black goth chick, I've always made it a point to not be elitist about the different types of goth looks. Pastel goth is spooky cute, a la Wednesday Addams rocking a holographic unicorn dress. Pin up/rockabilly can also be goth aka The Nekromantiks. The Death Rock style seemed to be going for early Gitane Demone. Awesome review and I just subscribed to your channel.

    I enjoyed this video so much. I am an elder Goth myself. At 50 I was around just as the scene was created and although it has morphed over the years my style tends to stay mostly the same. I like the way you described Nu Goth. I believe it is indeed a simplified version for people who do not have the time, money or patience to go through 2 hours or more of makeup and dressing.
    I think Lolita Goth never really took off in the US. I saw and continue to see it in Asian cultures or those who appreciate dolly culture. I will always prefer a good old fashioned Victorian Goth look for myself and I love seeing it on others as well. The sheer effort of it all and the grandeur is so aesthetically pleasing. I have no idea why TH-cam took 2 full years to bring you to me but better late then never. lol Off to check out more of your channel.

    You look beautiful! I love your fan. I think if they really felt the need to add in Pin Up, they could have easily went with the "first" Gothic 50's pin up- Vampira! ;) My style of goth is like that...blood red lip, streamlined black dresses and pants, black velvet, a bit minimal in comparison to peers in my age group (early 20s) I guess. Perhaps a bit like a beatnick, too haha! Great video! I enjoyed your point of view.

      Thank you, Ms. Autumn and I agree with you. Pin Up is a great style, but I wouldn't think she looked goth if I saw her on the street. Maybe not goth, but definitely alternative. The Vampira look (or even Morticia) would be more 1950s goth.

    Love your video and opinion. I'm now over 40 years old and I've been there done it. In high school I was old school Punk Rock then Death Rock with Christian Death, Joy Division, The Sisters etc. Then as I got older I was involved in the Cleopatra Records New School Goth like Rosetta Stone, The Wake, Two Witches etc. and that was all me until I grew older. Now with mortgage, growing up in life I cut my hair, became clean cut and worked my way up. Still love the music but I don't dress up anymore. As a matter of fact I'm now just a hardcore retro video game toy collecting sporty goth if that makes any sense. lol. Yeah! :) I'm not a young kid anymore that can work at Hot Topic and look cool for minimum wage and live with my parents. I got a family to feed and a life to make so yeah I tapped out of the cool looks and grew up. Yet still.. I have the joy of enjoying all my past nostalgic stuff in my home and man cave. That's the way I roll. Love your video! : )

    I don't necessarily think Nu Goth is Goth. The actual Goth scene is about music and art, and Nu Goth is just a fashion trend started by hipsters who don't know what Goth is actually about.

    • @gothicsoulflower3950
      @gothicsoulflower3950  8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Oh I see. I thought maybe they were goths, but not "uber-goths". Yeah, if they're not into goth music and art that's no bueno.

    • @DomesticatedGoth
      @DomesticatedGoth 8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I know actual Goths who are into the rest of the subculture who are into Nu Goth, and I know "~edgy~" hipsters who just see it as a look to seem all 'dark' and 'witchy'. I guess it's like the Mall Goths and suchlike, some people will get into this properly, some people will appropriate the aesthetic for shallow reasons.

    • @gothicsoulflower3950
      @gothicsoulflower3950  8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      That's true. If someone wears blue jeans and a white t-shirt and they listen and love goth music, then to me they're goth - unless they clearly don't identify themselves as such. I feel goth fashion is an expression that comes FROM the music and the art.

    • @DomesticatedGoth
      @DomesticatedGoth 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Some of my best Goth-y musical conversations have been with people who don't look at all stereotypically Goth - especially people who may have looked Goth in the '80s, but now look more mainstream.

    • @gothicsoulflower3950
      @gothicsoulflower3950  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes! With getting older, having kids, etc. it can be a challenge to dress gothic. Especially with jobs - particularly among professionals. I myself took a break from dressing goth due to various jobs.

    i can't see myself belonging to any of these labels. I just don't like being labeled period. However, I wear a lot of black, dark makeup, tattoos, I love the Goth Culture but I also love all those styles. I dont know anything really about the Goth culture, music and art wise, I just know that its beautiful & have always seen myself different which is what i find beautiful about all of this from the beginning. But i love learning about it all. I just turned 31 & just have always felt like i gravitated with this culture, because where i grew up no one really is into that except for me haha.

    I Think we all should try to see the positive aspects of those new sub-subkultures like pastel oder especially hipster goth. Firstly it makes the entire subkulture visible for lots and lots of people who are not rly IN the scene, but some of them could start to like it and learn more about goth as a lifestyle kind of thing, it´s a possibility for our community to grow. And secondly it makes it easier for us to go shopping in "normies" shops. Even if the examples in the video were like super easy examples without a lot of detail in the particular outfits - I think it was a nice try anyway!

    • @gothicsoulflower3950
      @gothicsoulflower3950  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, mostly. I like the different styles, but if it's not connected to gothic rock then it really isn't goth. The music is the nucleus of the goth subculture. If goth was strictly about fashion, there would be no issue. There's nothing wrong with starting with the fashion first since it's the visible aspect of the subculture, but wearing the style with no love of the music is just that - dark fashion, not goth. :)

    Nu Goth is trad goth but with modern cuts and patterns, basically. It shares elements with hipster fashion but so does Pastel-mostly just because the hipster look is popular with a lot of people even if they aren't actually Hipsters.

      I think Nu Goth is popular because it's more "attainable". Nu Goth also looks good on a wider range of people, imo. I will always love trad goth, but I don't think I can pull it off any longer.

      gothicsoulflower I can definitely see that. I know its a lot easier for me to dress up tights and a top now that i'm older and don't have the kind of money or time to devote to my wardrobe, than some of the more involved or extreme looks I wore as a teenager ( and especially now that I actually have a kid myself) Although I also just generally like it for aesthetic purposes, a lot of Nu Goth has a very witchy look to it that I really dig.

    Lolita was off. Think the wig and shoes were definitely off,and something about the dress seemed odd, but was too small for me to get a good view on here so will double check after I finish the comment. . Pastel goth was off a bit also, it was close, and is meant to be more creepy cute with a mix od pastels and cartoon ed out themes in a way, rather than black and spikes and dead things. Pin up and steampunk were way off and definitely have their own fashions, but we're missing the goth elements that cross over and bring the fashion back to actual goth. (much like lolita is it's own fashion, but has a goth cross over with some darker colors, or with kuro and shiro lolita). nu goth is like new age wicca goth, so kind of a cross of darkwr colors with wiccan or pentagram themes in prints or jewelry (her necklace and tights ). Romantic goth is more towards older historical goth (think rennasance dresses being more flow and long), as opposed to victorian goth, which is more victorian England style with longer skirts,fitted bodiced bustle gowns, fitted jackets, top hats, parasols, corsets,etc. Think they touched on some but missed many subgenres and lack in full details that make the styles unique from each other.

    • @gothicsoulflower3950
      @gothicsoulflower3950  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting take on that. Again, I don't know much about Lolita other than the basics so I wasn't sure how much they got right. And yeah pastel goth - no. But, creepy cute? Yes. I think that's where I was getting hung up at. Creepy cute is definitely goth, with cartoony elements.

      +gothicsoulflower (Dasia Denise) been into dark my whole life but discovered lolita few years back. so naturally I wear mostly gothic lolita myself. kuro lolita, being just black ,as opposed to regular gothic lolita which is black and say deep burgundy for example, seems to be more of what they were going for but went awry on. I agree with you on a lot of your points. I was wearing 'Goth' styles when I did not know it was Goth in the 80s. I am 47 now. (Even when I was a child I fought not to wear colors and even took black shoe dye to color my clothes. My mother was furious) So it is interesting to see what is considered Goth and what is not by today's fashion judgments. I agree that I would probably not consider Pinup or Pastel as Goth but offshoots of it. Still I am not one to say what is and is not 'really' Goth. But I am sure that a lot of younger people would not consider me Goth either now that I have moved from Victorian but into a more Boho-Goth style. (Think Stevie Nicks) All of the frills but less constricting! LOL Loved your vid. :)

  • @justinosborne5280
    @justinosborne5280 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The goth subculture originated in a music scene called positive punk. It centered around Goth Rock, Deathrock, Post punk, Darkwave, Coldwave, aka ''the batcave club.'' Bands such as Bauhaus, Blood and Roses, Alien Sex Fiend, Christian Death, Specimen, Siouxsie and the banshees, etc started it all. Since it was all about the music, it was about creating your own clothes. Unfortunately, the 1990's media had to make the label very known, sabotaging its reputation; this was do to the rise of new heavy metal and gangster goth trends. Most goths today, although much less in number, are a propagation of the 90's goth trends. There are many more annoying goth trends today that are less mainstream. Unfortunately, most goths are not doing anything to support Goth Rock and Deathrock musicians. All metal head goths, cyber goths, Nu goths, and pastel goths are all goths. Goth is too fluid a definition and everybody gets included, making underground genre tags pretty much useless.

    • @gothicsoulflower3950
      @gothicsoulflower3950  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I disagree with "most goths are not doing anything to support Goth Rock and Deathrock musicians". Of course there are some, but there are plenty of goths supporting their music. Outside of attending shows and purchasing their music and videos, what more can be done? I do agree that goth is becoming too fluid, which is not a problem until it strays away from the music and the appreciation of darkness. I do see that happening currently, but it's happened before and those in it to be trendy will get bored and move on to the next thing.

    • @folfelit

      They didn't get it right at all. Gothic lolita has nothing to do with western goth. No strong music associations, different aesthetic, etc. Gothic lolita is a substyle of lolita, not of goth, they just share some elements.
      The makeup was atrocious in the video. Old gothic lolitas did very natural Japanese makeup, as in some mascara, a hint of blush and that was it. Modern (or OTT/over the top) gothic lolitas also don't look like the video at all. They have a feminine dolly look, which is still all about the eyes and cutesy. They don't tend to shade under the eyes at all, and the brows should be really soft, not harsh like this. That really shitty "geisha lip" looking bs is more racist stereotyping than anything else. The wig was goddawful, the sausage curls were too thin, and not even a popular look for gothic. And you never show your petticoat, that's just in bad taste, not that she was even wearing the right kind. She needed a cupcake or A-line petticoat, her dress was limp.
      They actually messed up the majority of the substyles. And confused related styles for goth. Steampunk is not goth. Rockabilly is not goth. (Gothabilly and some psychobilly is) Pinup is not goth. These things can be related or share elements, but they aren't goth. The only non-goth style that made sense was punk, because goth came from that.

    • @gothicsoulflower3950
      @gothicsoulflower3950  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree that Steampunk, Rockabilly, and Pin Up aren't goth. But I thought they got Trad, Romantic right. The clothes were a bit costumey, but it's a 4 minute video, so it wasn't too serious for me. I don't know much about Gothic Lolita and your comments regarding that is interesting.

    • @folfelit
      @folfelit 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +gothicsoulflower (Dasia Denise) Trad and romantic were okay, but they felt cheap. I realize it's a low budget type production so I'm a bit over critical, but its just such a shame the poorly researched parts really stood out to me. Trad and Romantic felt alright, just a bit cliche, definitely not the worst, you're right. They just felt sort of like they're cosplays of the style, you know? With the costumey cheap ebay version of goth. It's like crow makeup in clothing form.
      Everyone is definitely free to have their own take, like with the steampunk debate (I only say it's not because most steampunks either identify as their own thing/fantasy historical fashion, or as a form of romantic punk rather than goth)
      Thanks for responding, I liked your video, you have a sweet and open minded approach that this bitter old crow appreciates, haha.

    I like that they started with Punk. Romantic was alright. Slightly costumish but not bad and mostly accurate. Cyber Goth was done fairly accurate save for the dreads. Pastel they got right I believe. Steampunk isn't Goth. It is its own subculture and more of a cousin to Goth. Pin-up, I think they meant Gothabilly but that looked more like Rockabilly. As for Nu Goth. I thought it looked alright. It didn't look hipster really, more like Hippie. Which makes sense. Hippies did influence Goth a lot as they were around the same time period.

      I actually really like the Romantic Goth, even if it was a bit costumey. Probably because I love long skirts and flowy things. You didn't think the dreads for Cyber Goth was correct? Were they too bright? Not full enough? I'm just curious.

      Heh. I'm similar. I'm a fan of Victorian Goth and Military Goth personally fashion wise.
      Well I recall some Cyber Goth friends and a few other TH-camrs pointing them out. I personally can't say much on it, Cyber Goth isn't exactly my expertise. But something about the wrong materials I believe.
