    I've tried everythign to remove the bolts. Propane, pounding with a hammer, they won't come off. I can't balance them, I can't sharpen them, I can't replace them. The only thing I have left to try is an impact wrench and a breaker bar. None of these videos help because the bolt don't come off.

    I had a friend replace my blades last time, since I have a spinal condition that limits what I can do. Was feeling good so I did it myself this time and replaced them, putting them on exactly how he did. It wasn't mowing great and still isn't, so I looked this video up. I put them on backwards lol. Mike this is a really good simple honest tutorial and no added stuff that confuses people. Although I did like your comments at the end about the misery of the job! I already had my mower on a divided ramp to get access because my blades were wrenched down so tight! So, I found your video to make sure there was not something I was missing because they were on so tight. Finally, I had to actually use a piece of plastic pipe to extend the moment-arm (increase torque) of the box-end 15/16 wrench. Even had to use both legs / feet to push on the extended wrench to loosen the last one that was on even tighter than the other two! It was a job to keep the blade blocked with a small 2x4 piece while I positioned myself under the mower, and assured it would not slide off the ramp from my pushing the wrench/pipe extender with my legs! I am alive to post this thank you for the assurance that I was not missing anything, especially the difficulty of this task! Keep up the great tutorials. I will keep a tab on them for other things.

    It might be good to mention that if you plan to buy new blades know what you need. For instance, the John Deere blade has a 7 point star pattern where others may have a 6 point star pattern and others may just have a small hole on each side of the mounting hole. If unsure, take your blade off and look at it first. Or, take it with you when you go to purchase the new blades.

    I usually lift one of the rear wheels (Just grunt and lift) and put a block under it.
    That gives me enough height to easily reach the blade bolt on that side.
    Make sure to chock the wheel on the other side and set the parking brake.
    If you drill a 1/2" hole in the top of the deck a couple of inches in from the tip of the blade sweep you cal put a bar in from the top to hold the blade from rotating while you loosen the blade bolt.

    I have a John Deere S100 bought brand new last year it has 15 hours on it. I was told that if I was to use the washout port to do it after every mow but to wait for the mower blades and spindles to cool down before applying water which I have done. I just mowed for the first time this year and after I finished washing it out I ran the mower blades to air dry the under side of the deck and I heard a loud whirring noise like metal rubbing on metal. I’m thinking it may be the spindles as I can hear it when I grab the mower blade and move it by hand but I’m not completely sure. Any thoughts of can I fix it with adding grease or will I need to replace the spindles?

    I have a question that may seem strange, but I have a reason. I hired someone to do an annual check up on my lawnmower, a John Deere X350 . I’ve decided I don’t trust said person. No receipts no job description.. do blades come painted? My blades are stainless steel looking and they have rust on them and it was just done towards the end of February. I have used my mower twice since. There are no stickers on the blade or anything. Blades are expensive.

    I had a hard time trying to get the blades off of a John Deere 125 Automatic (Twin cylinder) with a 12" long 3/4" box wrench. I didn't want to take the deck off. I needed to jam the blades stuck, so the blades wouldn't turn while I tried to unscrew the blade's nut. On the grass discharge side, I put a 2"x4" through the discharge hole and that worked well enough. I then smacked the 3/4" wrench end with a mini-sledge and it came loose.
    On the other side, I could not figure out how to jam the blade to keep it from turning. I tried a couple things like jamming a wrench between the deck and the blade, but it wouldn't catch enough. By some luck, I noticed a hole was drilled in the top of that side of the deck. I brought various phillips screwdrivers and I found one that fit the hole reasonably well. That allowed me to smack the wrench with the mini-sledge and loosen the nut.
    For both sides, I lifted the deck and put two brick thicknesses under it. That gave me enough clearance to work. I tried PB Blaster on the second nut, but I'm not convinced it helped.

    • @MowerMike
      @MowerMike  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep PB blaster never did me any favors. I understand your pain I have struggled with many a blade. Your best bet is to go buy a cheap battery powered impact and zip those bolts right off.

    I just flip the deck over and grind the blades before I put it back on in the spring. It's pretty easy to do as it is shaft drive. Although I think it is time for new blades as the tips are starting to get rounded and that is the most important part of the edge.
    On the other hand, getting the snow thrower attachment on and off is a real pain. It's heavy!

    • @MowerMike
      @MowerMike  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Damn that sounds like a bigger mower than I have ever worked on. What model is that? I agree the end of the blades do all the work

      @@MowerMike Kubota GR2000. I got it thrown in with the house deal. It was sitting in the garage with the thrower attachment on when we viewed the house so I figured I was going to need it and asked to have it thrown in when I made my offer, which it was. It has a 20 hp Kohler and a 48 inch deck, so not any bigger than most garden tractors, but laid out differently. Everything is horizontal and shaft drive except the belt that connects the three blades together on the deck.
      For the extra 3 times as much money, not only do you get orange paint, but also some sweet but unnecessary features like 4 wheel drive, power steering, shaft drive, and a hydraulic for the deck and thrower. Because of the hydraulic, the deck comes on and off super easy. It can set the deck right on the ground and pick it up from there too. The thrower not so much, because it is sooo heavy and you have to lift it. It is a 2 man job.
      But for my money you save a lot (over 50%) and get the same functionality going with a Cadet or a Deer and a separate walk behind thrower. That is what most of the folks around here run. It is what I would have got too if the Kubota wasn't sitting in the garage and the owner wasn't willing to throw it in with the house. If you painted the Kubota yellow and parked it beside a Cadet most people couldn't tell the difference.

      Disconnecting the spark plug was mostly important with walk behind or other engines that don't have an ignition cut off (like a key switch). There is that VERY unlikely possibility that turning the engine could cause the plug to fire and possibly send the piston down turning the crankshaft and blade. VERY remote possibility. But, Safety First!

    • @Nonplused
      @Nonplused 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MowerMike It is a good idea on magneto engines in case the ignition isn't totally killed and a spark plug fires. Probably more applicable to a push lawn mower than a garden tractor with the key out.

    Wouldn’t it be helpful to let people know that the mower deck does come off so you can not only change or sharpen blades, but also so you can inspect, clean, or replace belts while the deck is detached? Seems like trying to access the blades from the chute area with the deck attached is completely unnecessary and a lot more work....
