The perfect coupling of Fischer-Dieskau and Karl Richter's talents has produced such lucid, inspirational performances that teach us how to listen to beauty. Vielen Dank, meine Herren.
For a long time in my younger years, I had fallen into the habit of listening to this recording every morning as I was preparing to go to work (the choice was aided by the fact that I had only a handful of records at the time). This cantata and Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer)-also sung by DFD-were then among my proudest and most favored possessions!) The alluring long notes, which DFD’s mellifluous voice with its remarkable phrasing, masters so effortlessly; the cheerful sound of the oboe, often in dialogue with the voice; and the graceful harmonies of the piece with its generally lilting pulse (in the second Aria, for example); all conspired to attract me to this masterwork. - Now, after a lifetime of listening to Bach and all the great subsequent composers, my love of good music has deepened-and the glorious Bach cantatas, especially numbers 56, 82 (particularly Aria 2, entitled Schlummert ein, ihr matten Augen, with its elegant and enchanting intonation, as well as 140 (Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme), are still among my favorites-and I am grateful to TH-cam, and to all those individuals who post these works, thereby making them easily accessible to me and to a broad audience throughout the world. Thank you!
My God, what a voice, what great art of singing, famous Fischer Dieskau. Varying from clarion strenght to utter sweet delicacy. Absolute perfect diction. About too beautiful and moving to stand. Thx. Ulrich. Now I am going to look for das 'Mache dich mein herze rein' von D.F.D. In youtube ?
He sounded exactly the same in the concert hall - and he was able to powerfully project and "float" a quiet note over the audience to the back rows. I have never encountered this level of vocal technique anywhere else!
This is my idea of vocal perfection….DFD had such a glorious voice, made free by his technical understanding and control. I can listen to him sing for hours and never tire of him!
Some of the most beautiful music ever written sung as only DF-D could. He had such breath control and phrasing, so musical. We are fortunate that this beautiful voice has been so frequently recorded.
I saw him all 3times he came to Los Angeles. Two Schubert song cycles and Mahler’s “Das Lied von der Erde” with the LA Phil. He was, by far, the most accomplished singer with perfect diction, breath control, phrasing, interpretation and the most beautiful voice. He had charismatic stage presence. I’ve heard those soft held notes floated in a hall of 3000 people with those in the back being able to hear. He was in a class of his own.
Thank God composers DID continue to compose after Bach!! I can’t imagine living without them, although, if Bach’s recordings were the only ones available to us I wouldn’t complain, as long as the singers I love were included!
Rudolf Duthaler, Oboist.

Yes , Karl Richter was indeed a genial, universal musician.

Ah, a soul mate!
You said it so well. I have many of his Bach recordings.

Why did anyone bother to compose music after the great Bach? Debussy got it right when he said: " Le vieux Bach, qui contient toute la musique...."
