Take a shot every time I say "city" in this video
Actually don't, that would be very bad for your health and legally reckless on my part >:)

An elderly friend of mine who grew up in the bottoms of Kansas City married Pendergast's lawyer's daughter. His father-in-law was Pendergast's right hand man. He told me some stories that were amazing. Kansas City really didn't experience that depression because drugs, prostitution, and gambling created a booming economy.

I'm pretty sure my great Grandfather was one of the Treasury Department agents who helped take down his political machine in the city when he was in prison for tax evasion edit: I believe his name was Cornelius J Daly

An Irishman working to take down another Irishman. Sounds pretty Irish to me

If you’re interested in political machines i suggest you look up Edward Crump. He ran Memphis for 45 years and even got to pick a few governors.

My family was pretty involved in machine politics in Boston when it was a thing. It’s what allowed the Irish there to rise out of poverty. It’s what allowed my grandfather to go to law school, become a detective, and then a city councilman. The anglo establishment in Massachusetts hated my irish grandfather, but with machine politics, working with unions and police, he brought up the Irish with him.
It’s because of him and the Irish Italian machine in Boston that we didn’t remain in the lower class in America, so I’d say their actions were justified. They secured their peoples future.

people always say that bread and circuses are bad things because it is always considered a way for rulers to distract the people from corruption and tyranny.
But with Tom Pendergast and Huey Long cases, maybe bread and circuses aren't always a bad thing. especially the bread part.

If you want a proper fuckin' machinist, Claude Wathey of Sint Maarten comes to mind. Henry Kissinger had this to say about him.
"Anybody who can last for thirty five years in government has my unstinted admiration."

When I heard of someone with the name “Stark” as governor of a state, I thought about this one old film I saw on a flight, _All the King’s Men_ , where the main character, named W. Stark, becomes governor of his state and quickly becomes corrupt. While Stark in the film is probably based more on Huey Long, I still thought it was an interesting coincidence.

The Hotel Bothwell In Sedalia Mo (had a speakeasy in the basement). Boss Tom called Truman to a meeting there where he informed him that he was his pick for senator. Tom is also why KC survived the depression better than most... KC never experienced prohibition.

Very well researched video and let’s hope that machine politics stay in the past because it will be horrible that machine politics continue to exist to this very day from the local to all the way to federal level. It will be crazy if it still exists right ?
