Maundy money is fascinating, I like that it’s a tradition that is still upheld. I don’t think I could let anyone including royalty touch my feet too 🦶🏻 Great stuff Christopher & BCC 👍🏻
Hi Christopher. An interesting historical context to Maundy money. Happy Easter to all at Britannia.Great coins by the way. I don't think they will turn up in my change, mores the potty.
As ever, beautiful coins and fascinating history. Maundy money is some of my favourite coinage as it's not circulated and is available in limited numbers. I don't have a complete set of Maundy coins, but I have a threepence from 1762 and an Edward VII Fourpence from 1907, both of which I love
I notice the Charles II set has Roman numerals for 1,2 and 3 pence but IIII for the 4 pence. Also the George III set has the middle coin quite badly worn so I'm guessing that it went into circulation? Interesting coins.
It was quite common for Maundy money to circulate normally - especially the threepence and fourpence. There was (if memory serves) no difference in design till the 20th century
Yes I noticed that too when editing the video apparently IV is also an abbreviation for Jupiter so to avoid having a god named on clocks Romans used IIII as well. -CC
Maundy money have some stunning designs but my favourite is the current one 👍 , correct me if I’m wrong but the only way to get Elizabeth II maundy money without being a part of Maundy Thursday is though 2000, 2006 and maybe 2012? Silver proof year sets
So stupid question - how many coins does a recipient of Maundy money get? I understand £5.50 is given in the red purse made up of a £5 coin and a 50p coin. So the white Maundy purse will contain 96p made up of some combination of 1p, 2p, 3p and 4p? Is that correct? Or is it just the 4 coins?
I came up against that very same question and all the sources I found were very vague regarding giving the value of maundy money as to the age of the monarch. From what I have been able to understand the number of recipients correlate to the age of the monarch but in the white pouch there are just the 1,2,3 and 4 pence silver coins. I have a friend of the family who took 2 people to the service to receive maundy gifts and she confirmed as much. 😁👍 -CC
@@BritanniaCoinCompany Thank you Christopher for coming back to me. Recently started following your YT channel and came over here to as you mentioned Maundy money and I was curious. Appreciate your insight and thank you very much again - keep up the highly informative content and great work!!!
Beautiful coins Christopher and a history lesson . Mind you I don't think I would like my threepenny bit washed by the monarch lol😀. Which year is the most collectable? I presume it goes with the youngest Monarch to reign. Take care ☀️
Not necessarily the youngest there is a George III unc set from 1763 that quite the hefty price tag. 1831 William IV there is a gold proof set too which is rather expensive haha! 👍 -CC
Great channel, love all the history but want to humbly request you give details on any givens coin or coins current worth £££.... Please I have collection of coins and Maundy money is def part of it. It was left to me in a will.

There are some lovely coins from Maundy. Additional to the service some long serving Royal Mint staff also get a set. -CC
@@BritanniaCoinCompany I didn’t know that some royal mint staff also got them 😀 , I don’t think there’s a single downside to working at the mint

Around £21.000 and counting
Oh 70 years worth of sets that'll be a large price tag haha! -CC
My mother’s step dad got some money not sure if it was Maundy, but he was born one day after the queens coronation, he then went on to lose them.
Whoopsie -CC

I have a 1765 2d and 4d if anyone interested
Very nice! -CC
I started coin collecting 25 years ago and read up on maundy coins that these 1765 are rarest of maundy coins so I tracked 2 down.
A rather strange pronunciation of monarch!
