    I find it so cool how he always improvised his parts night to night (within the chords and structure of the song) it keeps it fresh. That’s a sign of a great guitarist. I love the royal variety performance myself. Great video!

    Wow! Amazingly researched footage of The Beatles’ performing this song along with accompanying tabs and your incredibly deft performances which illustrate the depth and breadth of George’s guitar playing knowledge and prowess. Your video also minutely chronicles, through different versions of one song, George’s ongoing creative evolution, experimentation, and exploration of complimentary sounds and chord voicings. He was such a skilled player!
    “Guitar George knows all the chords” as sung by Mark Knopfler in “The Sultans of Swing” by Dire Straits. And it’s true because there are countless examples, in the Beatles’ music, where George plays such perfectly tasteful chord-centric guitar licks - “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window”, “Fixing a Hole”, “And Your Bird Can Sing”, “All My Loving” - just to name a few! Harrison gave depth, colour, and visual and aural texture to the sound of The Beatles. He was incredible in my books. John and Paul deservedly get the lion’s share of the credit, but remove George’s guitar playing and Ringo’s drumming, and we’re left with beautiful black and white sketches vs the rich and lush multi coloured masterpieces that we all know and love! This is just my opinion, but your excellent video inspired these thoughts.
    Thank you.

    The Beatles were remarkably sophisticated and musically knowledgeable even in those early days (1962-64). They all had remarkably good ears and they remembered and practiced what they heard other bands and artists doing that interested them. They were very curious and anxious to learn all they could, often incorporating new chords, riffs, rhythms and arrangement ideas into their original songs, liberally adding Major 7ths, 9ths and Diminished chords and such.
    Interestingly, they rarely repeated an idea or a chord pattern once they had recorded it, but moved right on to the next new bit. All of this is a very useful lesson and example for up and coming musicians and bands as to just what the level of diligence and effort is required to make truly memorable music. This rigourous musical ethic sets them apart from virtually every other pop band in their time. However, it should be remembered that George Martin was their “secret weapon” and he added a thick gloss of musicality to their music that they did not yet possess.
    As tasteful and innovative as George was as a guitarist, he was not in any way a jazz player, nor did he want to be. I have always sussed that George's excellent solo in “’Til There Was You” was taught to him by a jazz guitarist, perhaps one that he was introduced to by Mr. Martin. There are no recordings of him playing in anything like that or even in that style before TTWY, and none after it. There is nothing on “With the Beatles” (“Meet the Beatles” in the U. S.) that is remotely like George’s playing on TTWY. Great as it is, it’s a curious outlier.

    • @blueskygal255
      @blueskygal255 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      agreed - definitely think the solo was done with martin's help.

    • @Glicksman1
      @Glicksman1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Luke Hopkins I realize that he played it in Hamburg and on the audition tape. He might have learned how to play his part, including some of the more sophisticated chords, from a jazz guitarist in Hamburg.
      However, on the audition tape, it was different and not quite as on the money as it had to be for the EMI recording. Mr. Martin, whose ears were impeccable, surely heard this and might have had someone come in to sharpen him up on it. It's flawless on the recording (who knows how many takes it took to get it right) and Geroge never attempted anything like that again for good reason.
      George was a brilliant musician in many ways, but a technically adept guitarist he was not, which he admitted. He did what he had to do in the band but kept it fairly simple. For example, he struggled with the descending arpeggios on "Help". They ultimately had to record the basic track without them and George later overdubbed the part with great difficulty. The problem probably was that he didn't know how to hybrid pick, that is, use the pick as well as his other fingers. It's easy that way.
      Nothing against George, who I have always respected, but it is what it is.

    You are so good at breaking down the Beatles' songs. I wonder if you might do something similar to Besame Mucho and Some Other Guy? They only ever really played these seldom, but their arrangements were still very good.
    Besame Mucho shows George's guitar playing with those minor chords and MinorMajor7 chords in there if I'm not mistaken.
    And Some Other Guy was a tour de force by George in his early playing in The Cavern and on BBC live never on their singles or albums until Live at BBC CD was released years later.

I know that Tony Sheridan teach the Beatles some things while they where in Hamburg, but after that era, they continued evolving for better. Changes were noticeable in the first recordings same way as you showed on this video with this song. Have you any comment about this , I'll be very pleased of hearing what ever story you can tell.
