I was so lucky or fortunate to see Cozy Powell play live with Rainbow, Black Sabbath and on the most diminutive drum kit with Peter Green from Fleetwood Mac. One thing i noticed was the thickness of his drum sticks. They were FAT - close to a tree 😂
Cozy, Dio, and Blackmore....just legendary. Stargazer is from one of the great albums, 'Rainbow Rising'; and following only a few weeks after Rush's '2112'... What a year was 1976! It's interesting, how you categorised Cozy. Maybe, it was just a UK thing. I don't know; but Cozy was a star drummer, for us. If you saw Rainbow, live, the two bass drums were emblazoned with 'Cozy' and 'Powell' rather than the band's name. I recall him being on Children's TV (where he broke the world record for the most drums played in 60 seconds... 400... Had to look that number up! 😊). He had solo hits in the UK, such as 'Dance with the Devil'. Well, 'solo' insofar as the artist was named as Cozy Powell, but included other musicians (such as Suzi Quatro on bass). Over the years he played with virtually everyone who was anyone: The Jeff Beck Group, Rainbow, Michael Schenker Group, Gary Moore, Graham Bonnet, Brian May, Whitesnake, Emerson, Lake & Powell, Black Sabbath, Malmsteen etc, etc. He appears on over 60 albums. He was friends with Bonham (both being in the Birmingham area at the time) and other local artists (Robert Plant, Noddy Holder, Tony Iommi et al). It's not lost on me that I may have been overly exposed to him and his like, with me also being 'local', relatively speaking. Noddy Holder's name was carved (by Noddy, one assumes) in one of my school desks! 😂 Nevertheless, and in short, Cozy was a legend, and remains so in my eyes. Thanks for doing this. 👍🏽
Brilliant that you went to the same school as Noddy Holder!! Going to give Rooney a hard time about being a drummer and never hearing Stargazer, or at least, Cozy's drum intro!! Finally, probably some Anglo-centric bent from us lot that grew up in awe of Cozy!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums "Powell died on 5 April 1998 following a car crash while driving his Saab 9000 at 104 mph (167 km/h) in bad weather on the M4 motorway near Bristol". In the rain, on the phone with his girl (which has a whole story with that) and not wearing a seat belt :(. He was into motorcycles, cars and racing, so he loved speed. Was VERY sad of his death.
From Jeff Beck Rainbow Schenker Sabbath Emerson Lake and Powell and Whitesnake. A true original . Precision chops feel ,he had it all R. I. P we lost a great one Have a great day my friend.
Great reaction Andrew! That opening fill by Cozy sets the tone for the entire track!! Yes, I think he lived/played a bit under the shadow of Bonzo, but those that know KNOW that he was legit and a fantastic player! This song certainly exemplifies that! Cheers!
Rainbow with Dio and Cozy Powell were incredible. There's a live album called "Rainbow On Stage" that is in my opinion one of the greatest rock live albums ever made. Definitively recommended 👍
I second that...as a kid in the 70s I used to listen to the song " Mistreated" over & over & over, for an hour or 2 at a time, for no particular reason. Just because.
Agreed, the live album is their best album, even better than Rising. Their best songs are on the first album, sadly the production on that album was very weak, if only Martin Birch had produced it. Their live shows however let us hear the first album as it should have been. Though I will say even better than the live album are their live performances from the 1977 tour on youtube. Hearing the same song each gig played differently is amazing.
Jimmy Bain & Tony Carey, unsung heroes of this track,Cozy is the monster at the wheel,Blackmore is sublime & Dio soars like the wizard never did....Rainbow Rising is one of the best & most underrated albums of the rock genre
On the LP this track is followed by the more frantic 'A Light in the Black' - and they started playing both live, but dropped the latter during the tour; it is said because Cozy would run out of oxygen 😅
The number of times I have listened to an unheard track and thought WOW, that's Cozy! One of the few great drummers who you just recognise that sound!!! R.I.P. Cozy.
Cozy is fantastic. I saw Rainbow back in the day, and they were so good. Great reaction. Edit: please do a cover! Also check out Cozy's earlier work with Beck, and later with Schenker.
Incredible song from Rainbow rising and the greatest lineup they ever had. Cozy is obviously on fire here, but Ritchie Blackmore was never better. He’s playing in another dimension here.
Cozy Powell was one of the best drummers of his time and deserved much more recognition. If you want to hear him at his best, get his “over the top” CD. On it, his version of the 1812 overture is priceless.
I'm one of the non drummers that watch your channel. This is one of the best rock songs ever written. I never saw Cozy in Rainbow but was lucky enough to see him in Whitesnake and The Michael Schenker Group. He was wonderful. In all my time of watching gigs there are only two drum soloists that really stay in my memory, one is Neil Peart and the other is Cozy Powell ( his solo is to the theme from the 633 squadron and 1812 overture). Try "Kill The King" next or "Gates of Babylon"
When Ritchie auditioned drummers for Rainbow, his audition was to ask them to play a shuffle for 15 minutes. That was the audition. He knew he wanted endurance, so he hired for endurance.
Apparently, Cozy was the only one that he felt was totally comfortable playing a shuffle...'He was the only one who could play a shuffle..' quipped Blackmore later.
Great band. Got into them when the live album came out in 77. Loved Dio and Cozy. Cozy was an absolute beast on that live album. Stargazer one of their best songs. iommi said they used to play Stargazer on the tour bus before Dio was even in the band
Bill Ward LOVED stargazer....On the bus, Black Sabath played it often and referred to it as ' that song with the drum intro'. Nobody was starting songs with anything like that at the time! Cozy paved the way for drummers to open songs with cool motifs- think Lee Kerslake 1981 Over the Mountain.
Hi Andrew, fantastic analysis. Cozy one of my fauvorite drummers as a musician into a band. He wasn't a showman player or the faster or the most ability with sticks but his playing was soooo wonderful into any band were he played. I love him. Please check "Lost in Hollywood" from Rainbow's "Down to Earth" Album
Unfortunately, this guy never heard of Cozy Powell. He never heard of Ian Pace either. Sheltered in NZ lol nice guy just not into Rock. Bonham and Ward, he knows. Ward, nobody knows strange. Lol
you need to listen to Cozy on Black Sabbath's Headless Cross. simple, yet so delicious and groovy. also awesome drums production with massive reverb, yet having clarity to it
Cozy's real name was Colin Flooks. He took the moniker Cozy from jazz drummer Cozy Cole. He'd been a major force in drumming since the 60s and to this day is one of rock's greatest drummers.
Cozy Powell could play with anyone......he was that good. So good that when Carl Palmer bowed out of ELP, Keith Emerson and Greg Lake invited him onboard without reservation. Powell was terrific with Rainbow and this was an epic effort moving seamlessly with Richie Blackmore, Dio, Jimmy Bain, and Tony Carey. Brilliant stuff!!
I think it was on Tiswas - that legendary Saturday morning show we all used to watch in the late 70's/early 80's. He was on there with Robert Plant in 1980 just after Bonhams death & laid down half the drum tracks for material that was to become Plants first solo album ( Phil Collins was the other drummer!)
Rainbow, Dio, Powell, Tony Carey and Jimmy Bain were the classic lineup of Rainbow that also foreshadowed the Genre of Power Metal, both musically and lyrically. Powell himself has been said to be a major factor in establishing doublebass drumming in rock and metal, with this song in particular being quoted as an early and influental one. I'm pretty sure I've heard double bass drums on earlier songs, but he's definitely one of the GOAT. Can't wait for the next, I love me some Rainbow :D Now, I know I say this on every comment (and I need to comment more tbh) but you also need to check out Jan Axel "Hellhammer" Blomberg, especially on the studio version of Dimmu Borgir's song "The Chosen Legacy". You'll know why when you're done :P
Cozy's band credits are Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Emerson, Lake and Powell, Whitesnake, Michael Schenker Group and the Jeff Beck Group. Some pretty big names. And to think he did all this by the age of 50 and has been deceased 25 years.
Cozy Powell ...Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Jeff Beck band, Brian May band...but the only to take the place of Carl Palmer...! Check it out: Emerson Lake and Powell from 1986
That is a masterpiece what an album too. I saw Cozy Powell with Whitesnake in '83 and he was amazing. He did the Dambusters and Mars Bringer of War off the Planet Suite in his solo spot. The best drummer I've ever seen.
Now that you’re delving into Cozy couple of points he held his snare left stick over palm, he came from Jeff Beck group so some jazz influence (maybe explains that left stick action) Very well respected amongst the musical fraternity of the 70s and beyond Ps I saw the Rainbow Rising Tour at Sydney Hordern Pavilion in Nov 76
There's a great video clip of MSG 'Into the Arena' live in 80-'81 which shows his left hand traditional grip which is a must for Cozy fans & drummers alike! - also he played on a ton of sessions - alot of them soul & r&b in the late 60's when in his late teens - apparently, there is a whole album of soul covers that he did with Jeff Beck from @69-70 somewhere....unreleased still, to my knowledge.
Ive held a genuine pair of drumsticks used by cozy , they were like cricket stumps , I know how that sounds , however I'm not exaggerating , try to look into it , he got them custom made and even the fastest marching sticks are like tooth picks next to cozies sticks.
I have loved Cozy since I heard him playing on Rainbow's album "Rising" from 1976. A great musician and an incredible drummer! I also have his solo albums on vinyl! Great albums as well!
The opening / intro ( and subsequent occasional fill ) bombastic "blitz" ( known as the Cozy Quads ) , were always a left hand lead ( if the left hand stayed on the snare then the right was free to introduce different pitches from the various toms ) ... From early '74 he was a household name in the UK due to his solo hit singles ( most noticeably Dance With The Devil ) on the RAK label .
As a guitarist and fan of Rainbow Rising (the whole album is THIS awesome) since I bought it in 1979... this is my fav Cozy drumming ever - He was obviously playing with master musicans, and allowed his 'head' - amazing... this and Tom Sawyer are IT for me ..
Wait til you get to the other half of this request, which I'm sure is A Light in the Black! Its the companion piece to Stargazer and really ties the whole thing together.
Man, that timing is funny! Listen to this.. When he passed away in 98 i was 10 years old and it was my that time i started writing on a diary in an attempt to fix my ugly letters, i was already into buying magazines mostly for their free CD's and then i saw on the mag cover Cozy was no longer with us. I then wrote it on my diary and it was literally on the first page so everytime i opened it i was remembering that tragic event. I quit writing after sometime and today guess what, 3 hours ago i had just purchased a new diary to start writing again personal stuff and thoughts and haven't done that since then! Now i just witnessed your reaction with my newly diary laying on the speaker monitor. I think it's a good idea starting the diary with that. Cheers man, keep the good stuff coming!
Apparently the song would have gone longer but it had to be faded because the tape was running out. That isn't a synth, it's a symphony orchestra in the background
I'm in the middle of learning this one for my band, and I kept getting stuck on the intro, because of the 5/4 right before the verse starts! glad that you pulled up the notation so i could SEE the drums :D
In the live version of Still Im sad, there is an extended drum solo from Cozy which is one of the most remarkable feats of musicianship in all of rock music. Absolutely incredible. R.I.P. You were really one of the best
Cozy Powell didn't overcomplicate things, he just hit the drums very hard when it mattered. In his day, he was probably the most famous and in demand drummer in the UK, a celebrity known to the wider public beyond music circles, having hit records under his own name, working as a session player, and playing with many of the premier rock musicians of the era. Just to mention a few: Jeff Beck, Michael Schenker, Gary Moore, Whitesnake, Robert Plant, Emerson and Lake, and Brian May.
Your in Cozy world. Read his wiki. He was a hired gun in his later career. Played with so many legends in his career. (RIP Cozy) He is my all time favorite.
Cozy was playing at this time,2- 26"×14" bass,2-14"×10" toms,2-16"×16" floor toms with of course paiste 2002 cymbals,an absolute bombastic drummer, check out kill the king.
When getting to know CP stuff, do not forget two fine songs he did for Robert Plant on his first solo album Pictures at Eleven (so, in a sense, succeeding Bonham) - these were Slow Dancer and Like I'd Never Been Gone. They are not about virtuosity but they are about stalwart and reliable drumming.
Cozy Powell was in his element playing with Rainbow. So many top-notch band members collected for this band, and each could only do their very best to put out the greatest sound for every song. This is the epitome of "Super Group." Rainbow has not achieved the same success since this ensemble were together, but I'm not saying they were garbage either. You get used to a certain sound, and when it changes, there comes critique.
Cozy Powell was in Bedlam after the Jeff Beck group later on did solo albums and played with Robert Plant, Emerson Lake and Powell and White Snake also Gary Moore .
🤩👌💥💯🎶 Cozy "Cotzy" Powell was quite under rated, partially 'coz' of his relatively short career on sticks and kicks in those few groups which raised in the familirity this kinda "genre". On top of that thinking late Ronnie Jay Dee was a recording artist before The Beatles is also often forget fact... Nicely done män and keep on rockin with these kinda awesomeness of music. 🤘😎 🇫🇮 💙
The remarkable thing about this song and the album is the small amount of time they spent in the studio. The whole album was recorded in 10 days and done in one or two takes plus overdubs. The sister track to this, "A Light In The Black", the base was recorded in on take. Another 8 minute blast.
THIS my friends. Is what we call in the industry a 'STONE COLD BANGER'!

That is a masterpiece what an album too. I saw Cozy Powell with Whitesnake in '83 and he was amazing. He did the Dambusters and Mars Bringer of War off the Planet Suite in his solo spot. The best drummer I've ever seen.
Cozy, Ronnie, Richie at their best. Legends
So good
Cozy is a beast, and this one of the best composition of a truly classic and epic song
Love this
Now that you’re delving into Cozy couple of points he held his snare left stick over palm, he came from Jeff Beck group so some jazz influence (maybe explains that left stick action)
Very well respected amongst the musical fraternity of the 70s and beyond
Ps I saw the Rainbow Rising Tour at Sydney Hordern Pavilion in Nov 76
There's a great video clip of MSG 'Into the Arena' live in 80-'81 which shows his left hand traditional grip which is a must for Cozy fans & drummers alike! - also he played on a ton of sessions - alot of them soul & r&b in the late 60's when in his late teens - apparently, there is a whole album of soul covers that he did with Jeff Beck from @69-70 somewhere....unreleased still, to my knowledge.
That really is a great pick! Haven't heard that song in a long time. Epic song, and the vocals, wow!😮
Check cozy Powell drumming on the Valhalla track on the the tyr black sabbath album
Ive held a genuine pair of drumsticks used by cozy , they were like cricket stumps , I know how that sounds , however I'm not exaggerating , try to look into it , he got them custom made and even the fastest marching sticks are like tooth picks next to cozies sticks.
So true!!!! Tree trunks!!
I have loved Cozy since I heard him playing on Rainbow's album "Rising" from 1976. A great musician and an incredible drummer! I also have his solo albums on vinyl! Great albums as well!
Rainbow - A Light In The Black ///is just non stop blasting from Cozy! Please react to Cozy Powell with Brian May - Resurrection (from Queen)
First comment to draw attention to Cozy's 'quads'..Cheers from a fellow drummer & Cozy fan!
Absolutely no problems whatsoever !
The best drum intro ever
To me this is absolutely top 3 of best songs ever, I can hear it over and over again without getting bored of it.
Just awesome .
Tytanic drum intro, one of the greatest of rock!! Cozy had a orchestral style of playing drums!
Fun fact: John Bonham got Cozy Powell the gig with Rainbow. Bonham was friends with Blackmore and told Ritchie he needed a heavy drummer for Rainbow.
11:15 wow that part actually sounds like the kids theme tune - "Paint the whole world (with a Rainbow)"!...
Thank you for this reaction! I enjoyed this drummer's view on one of my all time favourite songs . Keep up the good work! 👍🏼
The "synth thing going on" was the Munich Philarmonic Orchestra kicking in.
I will never forget watching Cozy play this with those two HUGE bass drums....He was fun to watch
Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow - one of the most underrated rock bands.
Finally ... that's what she said. Please do a reaction on "When Death Calls" by Black Sabbath with Cozy on drums
Saw them live in Lisbon 1982 (with Joe Lynn Turner on vocals)
Now we are in business! Many thanks. THis is also my request granted. :)
Your in Cozy world. Read his wiki. He was a hired gun in his later career. Played with so many legends in his career. (RIP Cozy)
He is my all time favorite.
Was there a cooler drummer?!?
Andrew...Cozy probably only metal drummer that used a traditional old school drummer's grip
You should see Elizabeth Zharhoffs reaction to this. 😮 " Dance with the Devil is another Cozy Powell classic from way back. 👍👌
Cozy played with Jeff Beck group, Rainbow, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath and also with Brian May's band. I believe he played in other bands as well.
Cozy was playing at this time,2- 26"×14" bass,2-14"×10" toms,2-16"×16" floor toms with of course paiste 2002 cymbals,an absolute bombastic drummer, check out kill the king.
I think that he later covered this kit in chrome shells...legend
@simonagger206 that kit was when he moved to yamaha, tom sizes were standard 14",15" and 16",18" floor toms.bass drums 26, on stargazer it was a ludwig
Ah yes, Cheers for the reminder!!
Cozy Powell along with Barriemore Barlow and Bill Bruford are among my personal favorites.
Masterpiece 😍😍😍🤘🖤
Gracias por la reaccion ...excelente !!!
Cozy eterno..!!!
Cozy! ❤❤
I’m not a drummer, but I always thought CP had a nice tone and sound to his playing.
Check out Cozy Powell's hit on the drums "dance with the devil". Not many drummers have top 20 hits!
I'll check it out!
Masterpiece. This is the best song ever written.
Masterpiece!
Cozy was in Jeff Becks band years before Rainbow and was a successful solo artist in the early 70s
Cozy Powell was in Bedlam after the Jeff Beck group later on did solo albums and played with Robert Plant, Emerson Lake and Powell and White Snake also Gary Moore .
Talking about Call and Response. Check out the Response to Stargazer, Light In The Black. Cozy really hammers those drums on that track
Those 3 records with Dio... masterpieces!!
🤩👌💥💯🎶
Cozy "Cotzy" Powell was quite under rated, partially 'coz' of his relatively short career on sticks and kicks in those few groups which raised in the familirity this kinda "genre".
On top of that thinking late Ronnie Jay Dee was a recording artist before The Beatles is also often forget fact...
Nicely done män and keep on rockin with these kinda awesomeness of music.
🤘😎 🇫🇮 💙
One of the most epic openings. And you passed it by like it didn’t happen.
Instead we get a 5/4 blabber
This is such a cool video, great analysis on your part
Thanks for watching!
one of my all time favourite tracks
The remarkable thing about this song and the album is the small amount of time they spent in the studio. The whole album was recorded in 10 days and done in one or two takes plus overdubs. The sister track to this, "A Light In The Black", the base was recorded in on take. Another 8 minute blast.
