He's a good man that Hayden for not making you feel like sh*t. We all make the odd silly mistakes like this and you're a very savvy, on to it woman at the best of times. Be kind (and others on here) because you are so tired and stressed from all you've been doing the past week with your Dad moving and then wham with the Covid situation - it's heightened all that anxiety and it's hard to see clearly in that funk. Now you can rest up, hole up for a while and things will be ok. Even the the Ranger, it's a vehicle and hardy. And yeah, Covid isn't this gremlin lurking on every surface ready to leap out at you. Take precautions, do the right things, be sensible and you'll be fine. Your Dad will be fine, what a lovely man and grateful to his kids for helping.

I remember travelling in a diesel truck and running low on fuel when climbing a steep hill. Engine problems followed. Lesson learnt: When you live in a rural area keep your fuel tank topped up, especially if lockdown is possible. I hope your mechanic was able to reassure you and give support. So thankful that this virus outbreak seems able to be kept under control.

There's a little gauge on your dash board that tells you roughly how much fuel you have in your tank, never think you've got enough fuel to get you there, because you probably won' t . All ended well, but make sure you change your fuel filter asap. Good luck

Hayden was indeed the hero of the day. Well done Hayden.
Diesel engines do not like air in the fuel line. My small diesel tractor has clear diesel filter. If I run out of diesel I have to turn on the ignition to run the diesel pump, then open inlet and outlet screws at top of the filter housing to let the air out.
Glad your filter hand priming worked to get the "money light" to go out.

Yeah, you should never run out of fuel, especially modern engines, and especially diesels. probably sucked up crud in the tank and could damage the pump as it runs dry.
I've never ran out of fuel, but should take it to have the filter replaced and fill the tank to full to clear any air locks in the fuel system - hence why your engine was hard to start, even when some fuel in it.

I was towing my 5th wheeler through Taihape several weeks ago thinking I probably had enough to get to Waiouru, but decided not to chance it and shoehorned my way into a small station. Refuelling can be an issue with a 30ft 5th wheeler. It's incredible how quickly you get to the bottom of a tank of diesel with 3300kg on your tail. I'll carry a container of fuel from now on thanks to this, cheers for the helpful paranoia?! Hope your dad got his internet sorted. =)

Your ute has what's called an OBD2 diagnostic protocol. A relatively inexpensive code reader can help you identify a major problem or if the gas cap is loose. A trip to the parts store should get you sorted. Easier on the nerves if you can even tell a mechanic over the phone what code is present.

That EML would be that you not fully primed the fuel when you ran out of fuel. You would have primed it enough to get the engine to start up with a little struggle. The struggle would have been the air bubbles in the fuel lines. It would have cleared on its own after a good run on a motorway. Its the same with any diesels if they run out of fuel it will need priming again such as the diesel heaters. Petrol engines are pretty much refuel and go after a couple of turns.
I have had Fords for years. I find it is best when you priming the filter is to take it off and pour some fresh diesel into the filter and return it. Then prime it. That way their be very little or even no air at all going into the fuel lines between the filter and the engine which in turn allows your engine to start with almost no struggle at all and as the engine is running. Let it idle and the engine will prime the fuel and will draw out most of the air. Do not turn the engine off imediately after driving as this can allow any air in the fuel lines to the filter.

I've got a transit custom, the fuel light comes on with about 50 miles range left in the tank, when the range gets to zero you can go anywhere from 10 to 30 miles before you run out, I've "tested" it many many times, the garage gamble just adds to the fun of driving.

Regrettably they have fallen to the bottom side of just ordinary anfd purchasers find them not meeting expectations. On a recent 2100km journey I embarked on the only broken down vehicle I came across was a 2 year old Hilux. We offered assistance but the driver declined. He just said that its the rotten DPF filter crapped itself yet again. Oh NOT what a feeling.

ITS OK, after you run out of fuel, the fuel rail has no fuel in it so when you have put fuel in and started to crank over to get fuel to the engine the fuel rail sensor sees low pressure and puts the warning lamp on. After the car is running and turned off 5 times with no fault the lamp then goes out as no faults 👍
Don't over press the top of the bleed pump as you was with engine running you can damage it

As far as covid is concerned, we have been so used to living without it here in New Zealand, it is disconcerting when it rears it's ugly head again. It's easy to be cavalier about covid until it affects either yourself or loved ones, so good for you that you are concerned about Hayden's Uncle and your Father.

I had an engine warning light come on on a car once and took it to a garage. They decoded the warning and reset the system as everything seemed fine. A few weeks later it happened again but this time the light had gone out in the morning. This went on periodically, once every few months until I realised that it always happened going down the same hill where there were speed humps. There seemed to be a particular speed and therefore frequency of passing over the humps which would upset the system and outside of that everything was fine. I had the car for years after. Odds are it was a faulty sensor or loose connection to the sensor somewhere.

Doesn't everyone run out of fuel at some stage? Any fuel injected engine is going to get upset once air gets into the system, diesels especially. However, as you read in the manual, the manufacturers allow for the inevitable in their design. About the worst that could happen is any foreign matter and water at the bottom of the tank might have traveled into the system, especially as you were going up and down hills. My guess is, your mechanic will tell you to replace the fuel filters.

    • @nigelmarx3578
      @nigelmarx3578 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@Paolo G well, every fuel tank I've had out of a vehicle and I've cut up has had a lower spot with a drain to collect condensation etc. I've run a large fleet of petrol and diesel vehicles and motorbikes on a farm and draining crud out of fuel tanks was a fairly regular occurrence as they were often filed from farm tanks and jerrycans. Yes, i know injected petrol engines self-prime, but it can take a while cranking to get the fuel to the motor. That's what I was meaning. And Perkins diesels with CAV injectors on farm machinery can often run a battery flat in the bleeding process. I know modern diesels are much better (I now run mostly Toyota diesels) but getting as much air out after running the fuel system dry is still important.

You don't say how far you went with the fuel light on, but seems to have run out quickly. Could easily have been the hill. You'll use a lot towing, anyway.
Those symbols are a general warning from the computer. Should be a record in the computer of what the problem is. Needs a special reader... Workshop job. Usually the car goes into limp mode when that comes on - reduced power to protect the engine.
Best get it checked. Just in case. Chances are they'll clear the faults and say nothing wrong.
Good you got back. Good luck.

It sounds like you had the same problem as me. I always gett 400km out my rank while towing my van. Well, I filled up in this little country town in western NSW, and immediately felt that the truck was down on power, so I had to go down through the gears more quickly than usual, and then I ran out of fuel at 320km. I had to wait for road assist to get more fuel, filled up at the next town, and all the power was back, and 400km for the tankful. I would say I collected some dodgy fuel, and it looks like you did the same.

Its a good idea to never let your tank get below half, because if it gets really low all sorts of crud can be sucked up from the bottom of the tank into your injectors Karen. Our Dodge is a petrol engine and i am very particular about not letting the tank get under half full
for that reason, also being mindful of the shakey economy at the present time.

Just a heads up....the engine management light when orange/yellow with light up for hundreds of different reasons. If you have a major problem the car will tell you to stop ie low oil/oil pressure, over heating, alternator fault...all problems that you need to pull over for. I see loads of cars sat at the side of the motorway and i bet most will be because they don't understand what warnings lights mean. Your car has heaps of sensors on it and I'm guessing your maf sensor detected a fueling issue (running out will do that 😏). Diesel engines are not like petrol engines when they run out...you get trapped air in the lines due to fuel density and the older engines needed bleeding at the injector. Yours is a modern common rail diesel engine and even if you did nothing other than crank it over then sooner or later it will fire as it will self purge ( you do need a good battery though) I bet your car coughed a few times before running out didn't it? That's the time to stop ✋ and don't try to restart until you have more fule. So in a nutshell, if you see a warning ⚠️ light don't panic just get to the next safe spot and check it out( off the motorway/main road) hope this helps you. Best wishes to you both.

Tut tut Karen, you're being a right woman driver in this video !
Suggested bedtime reading - the car's user manual ! It should say what's left in the tank when the low fuel warning light comes on - and if you have the caravan on the back - half the distance remaining.
Considering you're driving off-road pulling a caravan, you should be on hybrid tyres / 'partial off-road' or whatever they call them. They should have fairly normal looking tread on the centre band of the tyre and be knobbly on both edges for better grip off road. Put them on the back wheels first !
How many diffs ('differentials) has the car got ? If it's 3 then there's no problem selecting 4x4 on the tarmacked roads and quite a good idea to do in the rain when towing. As soon as you're about to go off-road, you may as well select 4x4 mode every time - it's much better to not get stuck at all than have to faff about getting free again ! The audience won't know any different and it'll save looking like a dipstick. Has the car got any diff locks or other traction features ? Read about them and understand them so you can use them to your advantage. A nice rope could be a useful thing to have to hand if there's a risk of getting stuck on soft ground anywhere. A skid to stand the jockey wheel onto could be a good idea too. Imagine being on soft ground and stuck towing the van - but then if you unhook the van, and get the car out onto harder/drier surface - then pull the van on a skid with the rope - just to pull the van away from the boggy ground before hitching back up to the car again.

Never, ever, let your fuel get below half empty if you can help it. It’s not safe for you and very bad for your car engine. This could be an expensive oversight. Running out of gas puts you in danger as well as other drivers. You’re way too smart for this rookie mistake, especially during this lockdown. Take it to the garage, you’re no mechanic.
