- Mount Rushmore was a rock band in the late 1960s hailing from San Francisco, California. They played heavy blues rock with some acid and psychedelic elements.

Hey, guys...it's Bull from Mount Rushmore. Very cool to see folks listening after all these years. This tune was our very first session on the second album...and our first time to fire up all those new Marshall stacks and new drums. Turn 'em up! We'd been playing this little jam live for a while before we started the record, so we decided to include it and spoofed Moby Grape a bit with the title. Thanks again, and Play on!
Hey Bull, what do you and the rest of band think of the band Handsome Boy Modeling School using the core riff of this song for their song, "Rock n' Roll (Could Never Hip Hop Like This)" from their CD titled 'So, How's Your Girl?'
I can't speak for Travis or Smitty (unfortunately Kimball has left us) but I consider imitation to be the sincerest form of flattery so I'm good with it. I think their cut is pretty cute although I don't think hip-hop could ever rock and roll like this. I also think they must have been smokin' something good and surfing some pretty obscure threads to locate this track. Smitty blew through my town this past summer and we got our first face-to-face in over 40 years and that was a cool BS session, but I forgot to tell him about HBMS.
My cousin Christy Kimball was married to Terry at the time of his death and never remarried. I heard all kinds of good stories about him and met him once up here in Washington. Christy is alive and well! Mike Bolan

Hey Mike it's Harold Tuttle,I had the best time of my life when I got to come out to play bass with Rushmore. You saved my young ass when Smitty turned to me at my first jam with you guys and said, hope you have a round trip ticket.you Fullerton told him I had had good stage presence, you told him I was hanging in there. I always thank you for that. We had so many laughs running up to the mike stand and doing the early version of head banging. That was Lewiston Idaho 69. I went on play with Asleep at.the wheel, Emmy Lou Harris, Danny gatton Jonny Stewart, brother of Billy, got session work in Tampa with Dave Bellamy. Played bass on Spiders and snakes, Billy don't be a hero. Started my own group, The Barking Spiders, ended up with Biker Joe Warren, I play Bass, slide, cowrote a lot of the music for that one. I even got married but I can't stop playing. Gettin ready to make another album featuring me! Talked to Fullerton a lot a few years back, he was like a brother to me. Any how thanks for all the good ones, Family Dog, Hollywood. Not so much WallaWalla. Great to see you still at it your brother Harold Davidson.
Hey, Harold. I'm so glad I accidentally picked up this post. I don't visit very often. There is another from you asking about a MR reunion. We actually sort of tried in '17 when it looked like there was going to be a big hoo-haa in The City for the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love and it seemed, for a short time, that we might play at said event. Sadly, the best laid plans...
I love your story above. A lot of those days are a bit hazy and the focus helps fill in blanks. I remember the head banging scene, because I was making an effort to bump up my stage presence at that time, and I recall the fun. Also, according to your resume, Travis and I were right. I would love to hear some of your new stuff if we can figure out a way. I'm on FB which I visit more often...keep me posted if you can. Great to hear from you, my brother.

Right on, brother! The music was fresh: creative, heavy with a bit of Hippy. Today's metal is too fragmented and tries to scare people. 65-75 music shows musicians having fun playing!

Amazing, I was checking out my Nitzinger for my Nitzfix and Low and Behold, I see Mount Rushmore. My cousin is Bull, the lead guitarist . I would never thought a relatively forgotten psychedelic rock band would be revered today on you tube. It makes this old Texas hippie proud.

I picked this album up around 1974 in Hollywood Platterpuss records. I have it somewhere in my many record boxes. I enjoyed searching for groups that weren't played on the radio. This is nice.

Hey @mike bolan did you know that your "Toe Jam" is considered one of the legendary sampled drum breaks in hip hop history? Handsome Boy Modeling School sampled the drums in 1999 for "Rock N' Roll could never hip hop like this" I hope they paid you guys some royalties.
I did know they had done it, but didn't know until now that it was legendary. No royalties, of course.

Indeed. 3 of us were from the Spokane, Wa area. Smitty and I played together in the early 60's. I knew Kimball and his reputation but hadn't played with him...they were 3 or 4 years older than me which is a lot when it's 16 and 20. The guitar player in Kimball's band showed me a bunch of stuff when I was a teenager. I was pretty adventurous so I bailed to San Francisco before them, when I was barely 18 and joined the fledgling MR. When MR lost our first bass guy Danny Wai, I called Kimball and he relocated to SF in 68. Thanks

@@vizualnoize I believe he relocated to North Idaho from LA about the time I moved to Cabo 2 years ago. He was looking for a place in the mountains. He was from the Moscow Idaho area growing up.
I remember seeing a double stack of 100 Watt Marshalls with the Mount Rushmore name stenciled on the back of the speaker cabinets for sale at a local music store after the guitarist had died. I slobbered over them but could not afford them at the time. They inspired many local people from the Fruitland-Hunters Washington area and I was in bands with or knew many of them. The Wright Brothers Band, a guy named Lawton, John Hudspeth, Clody, Junior and Robert Chavez, The McClane Family. Clody & Robert both played drums for the early Mondo Bando in Spokane before Mondo Bando went west to Seattle in the summer of 1975. th-cam.com/video/zbRzuo9uVAc/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for posting this song by Mount Rushmore. Do you have any others you might share? I saw them open for Blue Cheer in St. Louis around 1966-68. My first rock concert... Great stuff!!!
Mount Rushmore actually originated from the small rural farming towns of Fruitland-Hunters Washington State.

Hey Bull, where did you guys record "Toe Jam" and do you remember how many tracks you had back then (e.g. 4-Tracks, ½” 8-Tracks, 1”, etc.)? It fascinates me how good your record still sounds today (and how full of life it sounds) given how woefully inadequate the recording technology was for the time. Just goes to show how amazingly talented you guys were and how high the bar was set back then.
Gold Star in Hollywood. This was a one-take live cut with no overdubs or editing, and I think it was the 4 track room. Only the rotary effect and some panning added in the mix. The memory is slightly hazy, but that's what I remember. I do know we only did 1 take, live. The new gear was very inspirational, obviously.
By the way, 8068...thanks for the kudos. I finally agree with you and I think our cuts hold up, especially since we were actively resisting the "hit machine" in those days and I'm now astounded that we got away with so much on a label like Dot/Paramount.
