- In tribute to Michael, our LIVE performance of "It's A Matter Of Time" from our 50th Anniversary Tour kickoff party at the 2019 Toronto Jazz Festival, featuring special guest David Wilcox.
"Michael is the best musician I`ve ever worked with," states Downchild leader and co-founder Donnie Walsh. Bassist Gary Kendall echoes that sentiment "We lost a brother, a band mate, a co-writer and a dear friend. If you met him, you loved him. A creative genius."
We're honoured that Michael was our friend and band mate for over 30 years and that his final recording was our 50th Anniversary - Live At The Toronto Jazz Festival album, where he performed live alongside our special guests Dan Aykroyd, Paul Shaffer, David Wilcox, Kenny Neal, Gene Taylor and Erja Lyytinen.

Omg. Michael Fonfara was a legend. The first time i heard him was in Port Credit Ont. I actually did a double take when i heard him, and he just turned to me and smiled. He was unbelievable. My husband loved Jane Vasey, but for me, Downchild was and will always be Michael Fonfara. Safe Journey Michael!
so glad i made it to that gig, it was a blast..... but it was also when i learned michael was sick.... we only got to hang out once more after that... he was not only a hell of a player, he was a first-rate friend... i'll miss him forever, but it was 50 pretty damn good years.... happy trails, bud.
As usual, Michael played his butt of on this show......so happy we have it on tape for everyone to hear!
@@DownchildBluesBand yeah, i'll be saving it long-term.... oddly, buddy what shot it caught my back end for, like 3/4 of the flick..... so i def know i was there... and a note to donnie.... in trail , i told you how i remembered grossman's and jane..... i did not say how i had a huge crush on her that i would never dream of troubling her with.... so sometimes, maybe at that big old knob hill barnyard, i'd pop out cuz i had a night off, from roadie-ing.... and jane would be, like, d'ya mind if i sit with you? cuz then i won't get so hit on..... and i was honoured..... so anyways, when i realized my buddy mike was in downchild now, i had a pretty warm glow... ok, that's maybe enuff sentimentalizing awreddy.....
like, i saw him with the Checkmates opening for the Stones, with the ducks and 5 rogues i think...... and 30 yrs later we were yakkin about the stones, for other reasons, , and we somehow realized, he was 19, i was 12..... 'kin 'ell, eh?... the old tangled web.....
I saw him several times at Lafayette tap room💃 in Buffalo N.Y. love love loved him dearly 😭 he will be missed💔💔💔

To paraphrase Donnie Walsh's comments: Fonf was the greatest musician that I will ever meet. His talent, his resume, & his stories, (& a wonderful person)!! Truly one-of-a-kind....
The Best blues band in the world by a mile. Donny, you have a soul and I will never forget your home hospitality in Peterborough when Linda (God bless her soul) brought me to your house and we had couple cocktails on the water front. I will remember that forerever.
