So happy you mentioned coconut oil not being a miracle product suitable for everything. It annoys me so when I mention to people that it doesn't suite my skin because it clogs my pores and is drying and the response I get is "oh you need to use more if you think it's drying". Sigh..
Exactly!! Huge breakouts on the face & doesn't moisturise skin on the body! I cook with it & that is it! Hate seeing so many skin recipes with it in. There's barely a body butter recipe on YT without it.
I was shocked when I discovered it's comedogenic was a 4...the ratings go up to 5. So wow, totally blown away. I use it very rarely, but prefer not to use it at all. I'll use a light oil...I love safflower (and it's a 0!). it's considerably less viscous than a lot of other oils, so I just change my formula a little (e.g. add more shea or wax). To me coconut just smells really good, but that scent can be easily duplicated. Also, YES on baking soda. Loved it as a scrub until I discovered how important pH is. I actually use pH test strips when a concoction allows me to...not really sure it picks up the pH in lotions. But I know the ingredients and I know their pH... so no biggie. I love your channel...it has really opened my eyes when it comes to preservatives, etc. Sometimes all natural...well, it sucks tbh. Ty!!!
I have such a love/hate relationship with Pinterest. I am so grateful I found your channel to help me navigate the ideas I find on there and create safe and effective skincare products.
I'm right there with you! There is so much inspiration and joy on Pinterest, but also a lot of really misleading, well-intentioned stuff. These days I use it mostly for soap design inspiration and trying to figure out how to dress myself like an adult LOL.
Way to go Marie, can't even tell you the number of times I've clicked on a wonderful "shampoo" recipe and found it is liquid castille soap and essential oil! Or a GREAT lotion that is ALL oils and some eo's, that's it. It's thanks to your beginner's course that I know to pass these right on by. See you can teach an old dog new tricks! I'm learning things everyday about oils, preservatives and additives that make my homemade products truly great for me, myself and I!
I'm so happy to have helped you be able to sort the wheat from the chaff, as they say :) Wasting ingredients on bad recipes is always so disappointing!
I'm not a fan of the DIY that combines store bought lotions, shampoo, etc. For me it defeats the purpose of why I choose to DIY for my family. I have noticed a lot of what you're saying. After doing DIY for awhile (still very, very far from being a pro at it), most of the time I can look at a recipe or idea and know if the combination is going to work out or not..however when I first started "dipping my toes in" there were a few fails from using Pinterest 😊
Oh no! I can't use food as makeup?!?! Or Elmer's glue and activated charcoal as a face mask?!?! Or mix baby lotion, vitamin e cream, and Vaseline for the world's best lotion ever?!?! I'm so disappointed......😂🤣😂 I got such a good chuckle out of this video! You rock Marie!
Cynnara Tregarth that's me! Haha! I can't help myself. There's just so much stuff to make fun of on Pinterest! Oh wait! Another good one! Did you know you can cure cancer with hydrogen peroxide?!?! TRUTH!!
Hi! I am new to your channel and new to DIY makeup. However I am so thankful that I stumbled upon your channel! You are amazing and I love that your advises are backed up by science and research. I myself bought a bunch of ingredients such as beeswax, aloe vera gel and was about to start making my skin care at home. However I felt that I was missing some information(and as we know information is powerful) so I decided to research more. Anyways, I really like your channel, your spirit, and am very excited to watch your videos and read your book! Great job!
On Pinterest the worst are the ones that sounds really convincing and so many people actually made it-----its home made laundry detergent, 1 bar (or 4.5 ounces) shaved bar soap (a homemade laundry bar, Dr. Bronner’s, Kirk’s Castile Saop, Ivory, ZOTE, or Fels-Naptha) 1 cup borax 1 cup washing soda. mix together use 2 tablespoon per load. its really cheap to make and it dose save you some money at beginning...... But if you look deeper into it, it become obvious that this will not work in a long run.
Here are some readings that I did while I was researching for a good home made laundry detergent, its turn out I better leave that to the expert (just like Sun screen). naturesnurtureblog.com/homemade-laundry-soap-problems/ www.fluffloveuniversity.com/cloth-diaper-myths/the-bad-the-worse-and-the-ugly-why-we-dont-use-homemade-detergents/
+Emily Cai Wow, what interesting reads! Thank you for sharing. That all definitely makes sense, I’ve never tried homemade laundry detergent but I definitely won’t now!
So happy to find your channel. A smart and charming person with wonderful-looking recipes. Looking forward to catching up on your videos. Yes, there is so much misinformation out there, and lots of bad info in the beauty and skincare community.
Castile soap! That is my all-time nightmare (you should have seen what it did to my hair when I, naively, made a shampoo with it). Aaaargh!!!! But hey, I learned...the hard way :). I'm just glad it wasn't as bad as it could have been...
Oh goodness, you are certainly not alone there! My hair did surprisingly well with soap as shampoo for years, but once I started learning more about the structure of hair I was surprised that it did!
Ugghhh the mistakes I’ve made in the past ......thanks Marie for this video. Mistake 1 - I “washed” my hair in bicarbonate of soda mixed with water and vinegar. Ended up with a hard, matted, backcombed looking mess. Mistake 2 - I brushed my teeth with coconut oil mixed with bicarbonate of soda and clogged my drains. I don’t think my teeth benefited either. Mistake 3 - I filled a spray bottle with tap water and added essential oils to use as worktop, floor cleaner & room spray. Bottle grew mould and oil & water don’t mix. Mistake 4 - I used coconut oil all over my body, clogging my pores and got trapped in my bedroom once because I couldn’t turn the door knob with greasy hands. I couldn’t get my clothes on, my skin was so oily. Everything I touched was oily and disgusting. I can sort of laugh about it now but I’m still feeling raw about my stupidity. On the plus side coconut oil at the correct ratio is great in my CP soaps.
Oh no! 😂 This post is tooooo real LOL, I've definitely been trapped in my room by body butter in the past as well LOL. At least we can laugh and learn about it!
Absolutely agree. Lemons/lemon juice has a PH of 2 - 3 which is way too low for skin, and the same is true for Baking Soda which has a PH of 9 which is too high. Safe mixing practices are key!
Girl, Snark is my primary language of choice. lol. I swear social media has caused me to have chronic migraines from all of the face palm moments I have when I hear people doing stupid things with ingredients they don't understand (like a video of peppermint essential oil being placed on the tongue of a very newborn - like under 2 week old newborn this morning). I've learned to just stay in my hula hoop and admit to myself that I can only be me and can't change other people and their interpretations of information. lol. Thanks so much for sharing your wealth of research. I've completely enjoyed seeing your growth as an awesome influence on the soap & bath/body maker community.
So how do people get a lotion to emulsify with beeswax? I see that on Pinterest alll...the...time. Great info, as usual. Thank you muchly for you effort and commitment to educating us Marie.
I know, right?! They are somehow bending the laws of physics and chemistry to their will... or they are being less than honest about the stability of the product... hmmm 🤔
Borax (sodium borate) and beeswax can act as an emulsifier. (I used this in the first homemade lotion I created. Did it work? Yes. Would I recommend it? NO.) Unfortunately, the natural community is also usually terrified of that, too. So they end up using beeswax and tend to deny how horribly it performs...
Some others misconceptions I notice: soap as a shampoo, "creams" made without an emulsifiers (just mix some oil and some water/gel, maybe some wax and voilà...!), essential oils used without any awareness of the products (good ratio, photosensitivity ecc).
All so true! I'm also tired of all the "lotions" that are actually body butters. I imagine they gift them to friends who wonder why it's the greasiest lotion they've ever used haha.
Great video, Marie! Anyone making a DIY that you are going to use externally or internally should always research the recipe and ingredients. And NEVER make a hydrous product without a broad spectrum preservative........Vit E is NOT a preservative.!!!
I wouldn't recommend it, oxalic acid poisoning sounds really unpleasant! www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3527234/ That said, I think your jaw would probably seize up before you managed to eat enough spinach to poison yourself LOL
Great learning lesson for a DIY newb... some things are obvious lol. I was wondering if you could maybe do a diy for deodorant? I, like many others can't use baking soda and now I know why it's so damaging but so many recipes and natural deodorants sold in health stores actually carry baking soda. I am doing as much research as I can for the right recipe with correct ratios and would love to hear your input or even better, see a recipe that you might recommend in a diy video.
I'm still working on a baking soda free deodorant that actually works. I've found a lot of recipes for what are basically just armpit body butter since they don't do anything for odour :( I do not want to publish another one of those! The more "natural" deodorants that I've seen on shelves that don't use baking soda use active ingredients I haven't been able to buy, and if I can't buy them, then I assume most other people can't, which is obviously a problem!
I posted something on Facebook about coconut oil clogging pores so it's not meant for use on your face last winter and I STILL get people commenting about how it's so amazing and doesn't cause problems and yada yada yada...
Aghhh haha, that sounds so frustrating! As with all skin care things we can always say "your milage may vary", but that greasy coconut oil throne that so many people perch on is genuinely baffling to me in most cases haha.
Your recipe for the fizzy foaming face scrub is okay because it has citric acid, right? I've been wondering about baking soda myself- so much conflicting info!
Yes! The acid and base react to bring the pH down :) I've written more here (www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/no-longer-recommend-baking-soda-high-ph-cleansers/) with lots of links to more reading!
I've been suggesting using a baking soda as an exfolient ON DRY SKIN... then a spray bottle of vinegar to get it to fizz... then shower as normal. Total time on the skin is about 4 min. I thought the alkaline followed by acid a good thing...especially since it is right before a shower. What's your insight on this?
I wouldn't. There are SO many other physical exfoliants that don't have a detrimentally high pH-why wouldn't you use any of them instead? There's nothing beneficial about abrading your skin with a rough high pH cleanser; countering it with vinegar may help, but vinegar on its own is too acidic for the skin, so that can also be bad for your skin given the baking soda is unlikely to be perfectly distributed-there will definitely be high and low points. Why not just use sugar or salt?
Fearmongerers: Sodium bicarbonate is a CLEANING AGENT! How DARE big food corporations put it into our store-bought cookies! The dangerous part is that they target these "cleaning agent cookies" to KIDS!!!" Me: bisodium carbonate is baking soda???? 😐

Yeah, eeeesh. That's not going to help anybody with acne prone skin :/ At least all coconut oil will do is clog pore, though-baking soda scrubs obliterate your acid mantle and create a high pH environment that allows acne causing bacteria to thrive! ACK!
OMG!!!!!! I found a recipe for dark circles from Pinterest , which includes: Coffee + Coconut OIl. So I tried it,put it on for 15-20 minutes, took off remained Coffee and let the oil to stay on my skin. In the morning when I woke up, I saw pores under my dark circles ,on my cheeckbones, really BIG PORES, I have never seen them before on my face. And my dark circles are not getting briter instead they are getting darker. I really want to cryyyyy. I have this dark circles under my eyes, they are really bad, they are not dark as others, they are more dark blue, navy or dark purple, actually you can even see my veins. I dont know what to do,it really looks bad,I cannot even counter it and hide it under foundation etc. Pleaseeeee someone help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow... yeah. I can't think of anything about coffee and coconut that would do anything for dark circles. They MIGHT have been thinking about caffeine, which is present in coffee, but it's water soluble, so coconut oil is not a great medium, and coffee is... dark and stains... and dark circles are what we are trying to get rid of haha. This DIY "remedy" sounds so bad that I might even call it a troll-yeesh. If you want to try a proper caffeine serum The Ordinary has a good one for a very reasonable price :)
Humblebee & Me Oh wow I didn't realize it was illegal in Canada. It's made from hemp with no THC in it so you don't get high. It's supposed to help with pain. I am disabled and chronically ill so I take opioids for pain but I would love to switch to a non-opioid pain reliever. I just don't know if CBD infused lotions are truly effective or just a fad like all of the essential oil "cures". Thank you for answering.
Here's a big list of places I've found it all over the world: www.humblebeeandme.com/make-it-up-preorder/. It's hard to say too specifically since you could live in Antarctica for all I know 😝
Also totally agree with you on purchasing store bought products and making DIY's, it seems so pointless and usually ends up being more expensive then the natural version.
Also, if you have a look at "creams" made by Asian youtubers u will notice that none of them knows how to make proper cream. They only mix aloe vera gel, vitamin e oil, almond oil, lemon juice, glycerin and all sorts of food ingredients. Absolutely awful, not to mention dangerous.
Thankfully no! That would make swimming very challenging :) You can learn more here: www.theecowell.com/blog/do-your-cosmetic-products-penetrate-the-skin

I love your expressions and your videos are so informative. Keep doing what you're doing!
Thanks, Alita!
Loool Marie threw so much shade😂 Thank you for your honesty!

When I was first getting started with DIYing I spent a lot of time on Pinterest. Ever since discovering your website I don't go on it at all anymore.
I still love it for figuring out how to dress myself and do my hair haha 😝
I love the idea of the vaseline and lotion :) I know I;m going against what you're saying but I can't wait to try it.
If you're going to try it, please just palm mix, don't make a big batch-it will not be safely preserved at all!

Thank you for another extremely informative video :) a lot of people need to see this!
Thanks, Michelle!
Lemons and or Lemon Juice applied to the face is the Pinterest thing that drives me insane. It's seriously dangerous! Loved this!
Absolutely agree. Lemons/lemon juice has a PH of 2 - 3 which is way too low for skin, and the same is true for Baking Soda which has a PH of 9 which is too high. Safe mixing practices are key!
YES! This video could've been SO much longer (and snarkier, lol) if I let it. There's a lot of bad ideas out there.
G girl Marie did an excellent video on why not to use beeswax and lotions. Definitely worth checking out
I've been making her lotion for years. I just wondered why there are so many on Pinterest claiming to work. Baffles me 🙃
I know, right?! They are somehow bending the laws of physics and chemistry to their will... or they are being less than honest about the stability of the product... hmmm 🤔
.............I learned my lesson lol
Borax (sodium borate) and beeswax can act as an emulsifier. (I used this in the first homemade lotion I created. Did it work? Yes. Would I recommend it? NO.) Great video, Marie! Anyone making a DIY that you are going to use externally or internally should always research the recipe and ingredients. And NEVER make a hydrous product without a broad spectrum preservative........Vit E is NOT a preservative.!!!
YES!!!!
All so true! Not just Pinterest though, also TH-cam! Some bad recipes around!
Oh, absolutely! Yikes ha.
Now I want to find the lethal dosage of spinach :)
I wouldn't recommend it, oxalic acid poisoning sounds really unpleasant! www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3527234/
That said, I think your jaw would probably seize up before you managed to eat enough spinach to poison yourself LOL

I see. Makes sense. Thank you for all your research thus far :)
Humblebee & Me salt sounds good to me...back to the kitchen I go...
you look super pretty!

Thanks for watching!
Pinterest has some useful stuff, but there's a lot of nonsense too.
Sometimes I end up places where I wonder "... did the National Enquirer start a social network?" 😝
The worst thing I think I've seen was a post about clearing acne and it said to use coconut oil as your only moisturizer. Ewww nooooooo just please no
Yeah, eeeesh. That's not going to help anybody with acne prone skin :/ At least all coconut oil will do is clog pore, though-baking soda scrubs obliterate your acid mantle and create a high pH environment that allows acne causing bacteria to thrive! ACK!

Humblebee & Me thank you.
You may just have thin skin under your eyes. Are you quite pale? You also may not be getting enough iron.
What about baking soda in body or foot scrubs?
Why wouldn't you use a different exfoliant, like sugar or salt, that doesn't have the extreme pH?
My favorite misconception is that if it's natural it must be safe... Arsenic is natural...
So true!
Making liquid soap from bar soap pins irritate me!
YES! I tried it... sudsy boogers :(
Can you do a video about CBD oil infused products?
I don't use this product and it's not legal here, so... no...
Where can I find your book?
Here's a big list of places I've found it all over the world: www.humblebeeandme.com/make-it-up-preorder/. It's hard to say too specifically since you could live in Antarctica for all I know 😝
YES!!!!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
😂
Oh my gosh pintrest has some terrible stuff posted to it with such bad fails 😂
Also totally agree with you on purchasing store bought products and making DIY's, it seems so pointless and usually ends up being more expensive then the natural version.
More expensive and less effective... yay? Great combo, lol! :P
ICH. The only good thing about a recipe like that would be the joy of creation :|
I thought skin absorbs everything

LOL🤣 love it

Agree with you on most but our skin does really absorb everything unfortunately... on that I do not agree.
Absorb and penetrate are different. The better term of the two is everything penetrates the skin. Not everything is absorbed, which concludes with entering the bloodstream. www.annmariegianni.com/how-much-does-our-skin-actually-absorb/
