    My mom is at the Henley House in St. Catharines and her floor will be implementing this program starting next week! I'm excited to see the transformation! God bless this doctor for his incredible insight and dedication!

    Some families are too focused on finding what is being done wrong by staff than actually engaging . It's lovely to see how passionate this guy Dr David is. He has been doing many interviews and he has broken down in all of them! Good man!

    Well done, I hope this spreads like wildfire!! Making people happier is always a good thing. The man with the baby doll makes me cry. My Dad loved his "little baby" and cared for it, loved it and talked to it.

    This is very good program i do visit this facility from time to time and do have interaction with both patients and staff ,and have seen the great change and transformation of this place , I love the bright colours ,i am estactic ,and excited to see the interaction with staff and residents . I love that its homely ,and you really feel like home ,my aunt has been on the list for over 6years now for Malton Village and still have not received a call ,because of necessity i had to put her in another nursing home where all she does now is sleep ,when she first arrived there she was playing the piano ,she loves music and loves to sing in this nursing home ,there is nt much opportunity for her to still do these things ,its sad also that all the nursing home are not adapting to this program ,i believe my aunt would be better off at this nursing home ,due to the level of activity that is available ,i visit her quite often and tried to engage her as much as i can ,she is now 94 and i believe if she had this program she will live to be 102 like her mother when she died , very good Malton Village keep up the good work

    I just learned that there are 5 Butterfly facilities in Peel. Shouldn't this be the attitude not only behind every 'memory care' unit, but also every residence where people require assistance, weather senior or younger? Not warehousing, but homing in a family-style, accountable (health regulations, staff and family) larger home for living.
    The same could be said for classrooms in schools.

  • @doninocencio8153
    @doninocencio8153 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That thing needs to change, absolutely! However the Butterfly Model much needed is just a coat of paint on the system, what's really important is take the profit away from seniors care, private corporation care more about profit than care. Thus lead us to the very important issue of the staff patient ratio. In Canada the ratio varies up to 1:18, it is impossible for a care giver to do a decent job. We should learn from Norway, where the ratio is 1:2, how they do it? We should look at how the manage their economy in first place, specially how they manage their oil revenues.

    The main problem is that Family members do not do enough to spend quality time with their aging, dying relatives. The ratio of patient to care worker is 20 to 1. Virtually impossible for a care worker to give personal attention. The system needs Family members to participate.

      The way this video paints a picture of health care workers in Ontario and LTC facilities in Toronto is insulting and disrespectful to all the people that continue to work in this emotionally draining industry usually going above and beyond to help treat their residents with dignity, respect and compassion. It is also evidence that people sitting on their behinds writing about a job really do not understand the job and the day to day activities required to provide care to residents living in LTC care facilities. Talk is cheap.

      @@Only-interested-in-the-truth So, let's just keep things the way they are? What a ridiculous statement to protect the status quo and reject change. Your talk is cheap - the Butterfly Project is living it, and I know because my mother is there and I see with my own eyes what is going on.

    • @Only-interested-in-the-truth
      @Only-interested-in-the-truth 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mongoose000 It is not about keeping things that same. It is about making well researched and informed changes instead of running around just following aimless trends. You have one mother and in my career I have worked with 1000s and 1000s of people living in long term care facilities as well has my own family. This is not the only model. There is no magic answer to these issues and efforts to make improvements are and have always been in play. Critical thinking vs emotional thinking is needed when you have needs that out way your resources.

    • @mongoose000
      @mongoose000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Only-interested-in-the-truth Sure, there's no magic answer. But the system is crippled, and the change has to start somewhere. Perhaps, this is it. No offense to you either.

    some of the residents have no family. I have become a make shift niece for some in Redstone. The concept that they don't explain in the video is that eating at the long table is to make a family atmosphere. The staff become family. We have people here that since it is the best place for them to be are far away from their family and visits a far and fewer between just to make sure that the care is the best. This place if vibrant and loving and everyone is doing their best tp make sure that everyone of the residents is happy and feels Loved

    I would like to know if this is a non profit or a for profit Home. When the bottom line is profit either the cost for good care is exorbitant or the care is not sufficient.

    i really like this concept as i'm nearing that stage, but i would never move there because even if this place has improved the rest of the community needs a complete over haul and the peel police need to clean up their act, i have heard nothing good coming from peel county over the years, this may be the only shining light in that community

    We must raise the quality of life for ALL people, of any age.
    We must lower the cost of living, to raise the quality of life.
    If people weren't so busy and feeling worn out as bolts in the machine always chasing those paper notes, they would easily find more time to get the most out of life, and be better able to share it with their aging population of loved parents. We end up being so compartmentalized and disconnected by regulation within this present day democracy. It causes people to drift apart, and end up reduced to sending modern day texts, when we used to pick up the phone, after we used to be around actual people before that. We became distanced making sure to be bolts in the machine, and called it the new norm.
    The universe does not want people to remain too busy chasing shiny things, being 2 paycheques away from potential homelessness and eating life shortening garbage.
    We need to promote the arts and sciences, embrace automation, while it will effectively delete the expectations and needs for forms of currency.

    A beautiful concept that is already being implemented through Recreation Therapy departments in many long term care homes across Ontario. The idea of engaging people in meaningful activities based on their interests, abilities, prior occupations, etc. is not some new fad, it is actually the basis of a Recreation Therapist's role and there is an incredible lack of recognition for the recreation department in this clip. The staff in this documentary were incorrect in assuming that just because residents do not participate in the scheduled group programs, they are ignored, abandoned in their chairs in the hallways and left to fend for themselves. Participation and engagement in activities is documented by recreation staff in LTC just as nursing, personal cares and dietary reports are completed by other departments. This is to ensure that ALL residents are being engaged in activities that are specific to their interests. Individualized programs implemented on a 1:1 basis are just as important as group activities and always have been. There is no doubt that the changes within this unit were wonderful, but it would have been nice to give some recognition to the recreation staff that have likely been using this approach for many years now.

      My Mom is in LTC with dementia and the recreation program doesn't reach her. There is no individualized program. I have to pay my own caregivers or she isn't take to any programs. I find that recreation is just like the rest of the care in LTC. There is not enough staff and so if you have dementia you are left behind.

    • @ashleysillen3460
      @ashleysillen3460 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I said "many" long term care homes...not necessarily ALL of them. There are absolutely homes within the province that do not currently have the Recreation Therapy approach within their recreation department and still primarily focus on group activities. However, there are MOHLTC regulations in place specifying that all residents within the home should be receiving equal opportunities to participate in recreational activities...dementia or not. I'm sorry this is not the case for your mother, but I would suggest speaking with the recreation staff within the home. There is a chance that they may be engaging her in alternative types of individualized activities but you just don't know it. Every resident has a care plan with a recreation component attached, you can always ask to see what their interventions and goals are for your mother. And if they consistently aren't engaging her in any type of programming or don't have a care plan set up for her, it should be brought to the attention of the administrator of the home.

    Congrats on sharing 1/2 truths and propaganda. The model of care you are promoting is a product being sold that costs $$$. It is a business model and product being sold. LTC facilities should not just be jumping on board to any trend of fade. This is irresponsible. Changes should be made based on research based evidence instead of pushing ideas that are not the only way to make positive changes that do not work for all facility demographics! Most LTC facilities have been incorporating all of these things for years. It is not a perfect system or world. Congratulations on being clueless and helping to sell a product vs neutral research based ideas and concepts. Once again this tear jerking video shows how bias and dangerous the media can be. Disappointing! Shame on you.
