  • We Are Family showcases the value of Dementia Care Matters' 'Feelings Matter Most' philosophy for people living with dementia, which recognises that people living with a dementia are more feeling beings than thinking beings. Filmed at Landermeads Nursing Home, in Nottingham, UK, the film shows how the Butterfly Household Model of Care identifies that quality dementia care is all about the beauty of the moment and sharing and celebrating life. The film also explores how the model of care works from a training and financial viability perspective. It's a powerful story about love, family and living in the moment.
“The essence of great dementia care is understanding that a person with dementia does not have behaviours; they have feelings.” - David Sheard, founder of Dementia Care Matters and creator of the Butterfly ModelTM.
We Are Family premiered on November 8th, 2018 at the UK Dementia Congress in Brighton, England. On November 9th, 2018 Landermeads won Best Care Home in the UK at the National Care Awards - a very well deserved award!
We Are Family is the fifth film in the multimedia film series Side by Side: Love and Joy in Dementia Care by Dr Cathy Greenblat and Corinne Maunder. Watch all the films and get in touch with us here: www.sidebysidedementia.com.

They’ve nailed it, not just for dementia care, but for all care.

"A person with dementia does not have behaviours, they have feelings" - powerful words, powerful film. Why can't all care homes be like this? It just makes so much sense, and as someone who has visited a number of these fabulous Butterfly Households I can attest to the fact that it works beautifully. I wish my mom had had a place like this. Feelings really do matter most in dementia care. Thank you for making this wonderful film.

I just LOVE the Butterfly Care Homes approach. I long for this approach, which acknowledges the primacy of the emotions in dementia, to become 'the way we do things around here'. Thank you, David and team, for reminding us that 'Feelings Matter Most'.
