Same! I had to go back and check, and it only appears in one shot. I blame the fact that there are 2 other shuttles (Vader's and the Rebel's) that get more screen time and don't feature the stripe.
So true!

We noticed in only 40 years? Fire those prop guys now! (After we do some investigating)....they retired about fifteen years ago......awkward.
that's kind of amazing that the film used its own actual merchandise
Makes sense, saves a lot of time and money when toy makers are making props for you, especially low detail background props. especially considering ROTJ was made with keeping costs in mind after TESB production going over budget almost bankrupted george
Star Trek did that all the time when it comes to background ships. Some vessels straight up have Stabilo Markers glued to a kitbash of toys.
That's been common knowledge for decades, they used a lot of the official model kitsch for Return of the Jedi.
Makes this the greatest franchise of all time
For the mandolorian they needed more stormtrooper armour so they got the 501st cosplayers to fill in
So regarding the "Dark stripe" down the middle denoting it as the Emperor's guard, the Bad Batch finale did this too! During the epilogue sequence where Nala Se is delivered to the imperial base, she is accompanied by Clone Commandos with a similar grey stripe on their armor. Behind the scenes material refers to these Clones as "Royal Guards". So it's nice to see that little bit of consistency.
Also for Legends fans? The name of that base is "Mount Tantiss." Do with that info what you will.

To be fair, some of them like the rebel ships are different.
Well the ties didn't have solor panels; solar collectors they had. Think about that. You could make a real supeority fighter with the difference. It's important. All wavelengths. knock it off with solar panels. Do solar panels have copper tubing? No. Do collectors? Yes.

Imagine if this TIE variant replaced the "TIE Scout" in canon, it would've served as a better explanation to how Ben made it to Exegol with seemingly just a TIE fighter. It would've made sense too since plenty of these were clearly stationed in the Death Star 2 when it got destroyed. And given that Ben is an excellent pilot, we could infer that he'd studied the history of TIE variants and knew exactly which one he should find in the Death Star 2's wreckage...
Trying to make sense of anything in RoS is an exercise in futility
I mean Vader was present, perhaps his Tie Advanced was on the Death Star? Maybe he has it brought from his flag ship

I personally like the legends all-red Royal Guards TIEs but the TIE Vigilant is very nice. In my headcanon, the all-red Royal Guards TIE's are more ceremonial and the TIE Vigilant is the more common and practical version used by escorts for the imperial elites including the Emperor.
I would think the red would be used to make a fake ship convoy like as a discretion from the real shuttle used by Palpatine
I go with the idea that the TIE Vigilant is used when the Royal Guard wants to keep a low profile. After all, at a glance, its unlikely you'll notice the differences between a TIE/IN and a TIE Vigilant. The reason that the Royal Guard decided to keep a low profile was because they didn't want to draw angry Corellian Corvettes or Gunships down upon them.
The all red Royal Guard TIEs are also used as well.

When you said the bit about them participating to devastating effect in the Battle of Endor, I thought about the F4F Wildcat and F6F Hellcat of WWII.
The Hellcat looks quite similar to the Wildcat, and apparently some Japanese pilots mistook it for such, attempting maneuvers that the older and slower Wildcat couldn't keep up with only to find the Hellcat still on their tail and firing at them.
I can just imagine a Rebel pilot in the heat of battle assuming its a standard TIE/ln and underestimating it, perhaps thinking it lacks shields so a glancing blow should be enough to finish it off.

An EC Henry video about a forgotten or custom ship: Even Better
Realizing he is talking about a TIE fighter variant: Priceless
I LOVE how you do this: take something obscure and make it an actual, lore driven thing.
I think its safe to say that George Lucas' personal investment of his own imagination and creation of lore has long since been surpassed by nerds everywhere.
I think the truth is simply that his model makers were trying to break the monotany and throw a little variety in while putting these models together. They knew, at that time, that their little trilogy was a success, but I don't think even they were trying to will a ficticious universe into existence. I also don't think they had a backstory for every varying detail that set aside one ship from another.
I would say George is both proud and a little embarrassed at the way people have taken the reigns on this story and run with it.
@@Andy_Sidaris Ok, sure. An entire universe with teddy bears and one woman and a back story for every single droid, alien, and ship with a blemish that grazed the screen for a split second.
@@Andy_Sidaris And there lies the problem.
Generally speaking, the Star Wars audience is only interested in the cinematic material. When you start creating novelizations, you eliminate a huge chunk of the audience. There is a niche audience who embraces the books or comics or whatever alternative medium there is, but its a niche audience. When you start adding characters and content to the movies that have backstory rooted in the alternative mediums, then you abandon the audience who isn't going to have read or observed that material.
Marvel has been making this same mistake with their movies, as of late. In order to keep up with character arcs, now you are expected to watch the crappy series that are produced for Disney Plus. Its a bad plan for appealing to the widest audience.
Star Wars original trilogy did everything right to completion within those three movies. We didn't need any further development in characters or plot. And building some of these characters reteoactively....cough cough....Boba Fett, is just cheap fan service.
@@Andy_Sidaris I'm not so sure. I know that episode 4 is associated with the title now, but I'm not so sure it was back in '77. I didn't see it in theaters back then and I don't have a vintage vhs cassette to verify.
I really think he added the episode 4 later on.
Again, I'm just not positive.
What I don't believe is that he had this whole universe, characters, and story lines all mapped out from the beginning. He's good, but I don't think he's that good.
@@vladikuz I'll bet that would have been inspiring if I could read that language.
I honestly think my favorite part is the inside. It makes so much sense to have this comfortable cockpit for long flights and I don't think I've ever seen anything like this before. Not sure if you can use this in another ship, but apparently real life navy submarines have the best food out of any naval vessel, because they spend months and months out at sea. Love your videos, would love to see a Star Wars submarine.
I think his Resistance Y-wing would fit a lot of the same characteristics: relatively long missions, slightly more comfortable than a regular fighter, and he even included a galley. It may only have missions of a week or two instead of months, but I think given the relative sizes I think the parallels are there.
Not only food, but some nuclear submarine have pretty great crew amenities that even better than surface warship. There's even a swimming pool and a sauna on the Akula ballistic missile submarine.
Where was the cap hook and the bathroom door ????
I recall watching a marine or some other kind of infantry talking about MRE's particularly the candy bars and other dessert options they had and he said "when you're under distress for that long, a small smudged up piece of chocolate can really brighten up your day". I imagine they know how miserable being underwater and camped for months at a time can be and try to provide any comfort they can allow the troops to have.
I suspect the food quality on those submarines is quite a bit better for the first week or so when they would be able to have things like fresh fruit, milk and never frozen meat.

The TIE-VGs stayed outside the Death Star II during the Emperor's visit to shepherd the swarms of TIEs orbiting the station, as following the defections of Kasan Moor, Crix Madine and other Imperials, the Emperor was becoming increasingly aware of not only the rebel threat but other factions emerging within the Empire who wished him dead, wishing to reshape the Empire in their image, most notably amongst the increasingly downtrodden Imperial Navy who often bore the brunt of heavy engagements with the Rebellion.
Inside the station, he had the perceived protection of his faithful apprentice and the 501st who were also on Endor. The TIE-VGs were another layer of protection for the increasingly paranoid Sith Lord.
...in my opinion.
Either that or due to the increased threat from Rebel cells, they were preparing to run a combat exercise to make sure the base defenses were up to snuff. While yes these TIEs we're superior to the standard ones, they likely weren't all that much better than something like an A-wing or X-wing.
I played the X-Wing flight simulator extensively when I was a kid, and it felt so authentic that I often have to remind myself that the durability of the Alliance fighters was probably exaggerated for the benefit of the player. So, I have a knee-jerk reaction with a comment like "a somewhat improved TIE Fighter was devastating to B-Wings" because the B-Wing in that game was an absolute tank. Fun fact: the Y-Wing was my ultimate TIE Fighter hunter because its cannons were so close together and center-line that a dual-blast would almost always hit with both, instantly killing a TIE Fighter in one volley.
Of course, I played my fair share of the TIE Fighter simulator, in which I killed many Alliance ships in nothing more than an upgraded TIE Fighter with shields. The TIE Interceptor was a beast. The TIE Defender and Missile Boat were power-creep monstrosities.
That's some amazing rendering work, given the limited amount of source material. Outstanding job! You should work on the next Star Wars!

Gideon Thangcin If they did a even slightly higher budget version of the shorts they’re putting out now they could tell some interesting stories with the ship as the frame rather than the character(s) necessarily.
Daniel McElroy exactly, so the first episode could be about a Spice Freighter for example and the characters are just there to set the premise. Then the next episode could be about an obscure Class of Gunship or something and tell a story with different characters that fit the premise. Kind of like Gundam Evolve if you’re familiar with that

3:34 interestingly, the clone commandos on Mt Tantiss in the Bad Batch have been titled as Imperial Royal Guards in concept art. They too have a grey stripe down the middle of a similar shade.
The way you explained this mysterious tie feels to me that it could actually work within the lore, and as a specialized tie
The only problem I have with the “roomy” cockpit idea is that you would think Vader’s TIE Advanced would have the same feature since he is much more of a higher up within the Empire as opposed to the royal guards. Maybe it could be that the cramped cockpit of the TIE Advanced reminds him of his past days flying around in his Jedi starfighter, and prefers not to have the luxury’s that come with his position within the Empire. Still, this is cannon for me, great video! Can’t believe that new things are being found in these movies!

Two winks? Isn’t that just a blink?
I always felt that “solar collectors” was a misnomer and that the TIE’s wings were radiator panels, compensating for the ship’s compact fuselage.
Otherwise, we don’t see solar collectors anywhere else and it wouldn’t work in deep space, whereas plenty other ships have large surface areas that would appear to aid in heat dissipation more than anything else (like S-foils).
I think that they aren't only solar collector but also massive solar batteries that can store Energy to use in deep space's flight
That would also explain why TIE fighters are prone to blow up upon impact:
One hit to the storage of that amount of energy and all the ship goes kaboom
@@thewitch7342 Except the panels are one of the few places TIEs have been seen taking a hit and staying intact; their fragility is the lack of shields. It's a very elaborate explanation for something we don't see anywhere else on starfighters.

Thats trippy, when the Vigilant model is on display towards the end, it rotates every 10 seconds, so skipping 5 ahead perfectly reverses it.
In a lot of games the standard tie fighter has rockets and more power guns than the interceptor’s. This tie variant you modeled could be a great explanation for them. They have hyperdrives, shields, and rockets for VIP protection.
0:42 I immediately recognized the TIE fighters in question. I actually had one of these toys when I was eight years old. I've always wondered, I had a TIE fighter toy as a kid in the late '90's, action figure sized so they could sit in it properly, and I've always wondered why the back end was completely different than the movie version as well as why the wings were wide set and shorter. Mine had no batteries in that protrusion but retained it as part of the ship anyway and had little bits on it making it look like important parts of the fighter. It's notable "feature" was spring loaded wings that would pop off when it got shot down as it were. I used to explain it as a hyperdrive equipped TIE too!!
I remember noticing it, while watching the return of the jedi and realizing "wait a second that tie is weird" I also remembered notice that from a shot to another every time you can see Luke watch the battle it's always the same sequence of battles in the background

What would a capital ship built by *Incom corporation* look like?
Hmmmm...there is the Y-95 "Titan" dropship used to transport AT-ATs and AT-STs, and they made Cloud City. Those two projects could inform the design of Incom capital ships.
It would have S-foils. Yes. On a capital ship. It would basically be designed with all its heavy weapons on fixed mounts, and all its turrets for anti-fighter/bomber purposes, and would be focused on being very fast and maneuverable for a capital ship, with an operational goal of getting behind other, larger vessels and firing all its fixed heavy batteries and torpedoes right up their -bums- engines.

@@mrj8149 Yep, the Tarkin Doctrine was responsible for the decommissioning of every single fighter the Republic that preceded it used with a handful of exceptions.
@@draagedeh1983 the big difference is those were piloted by people who can fight hand to hand better, these are pilots through and through who can melee as well.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate just how cool looking the Royal Guard Flight suits and helmets are.
Why? Because its red.
@@SephirothRyu No. Because is looks awesome.
@@oceankim8791 You not understand da wayz of Gork an' Mork!
Superb as usual.
Could you do a video on the AT-ST seen on Hoth? It always looked quite different to me, with heavier weaponry, but canon sources only barely recognise the fact.
You've done it again! Another very plausible and logical extrapolation of an obscure ship. I really like the idea of a "luxury model" of a usually spartan piece of Imperial equipment.
I enjoyed your fan-fiction explanation for the non-standard TIE fighter. It fits well into the existing canon (such as it is). Thanks for the video!
Return of the Jedi: *exists*
ECHenry: reveal your secrets
In my experience with ship building games, particularly at the fighter scale, I've found that increased durability almost never "makes up for" poor maneuverability. Either you're agile enough to make your enemies miss, or you're not and you die.
Elite Dangerous, No Man Sky, World of Warships...
all of them, my most effective combat vessels are the ones that can... *Piccolo voice*
DOOOOOOOOODGE!!!!
...so I guess your statement tracks!
In Rise of Skywalker, I couldn’t help but wonder how Kylo Ren got from the Death Star to Exegol with what seemed to be a standard Imperial TIE that survived the explosion, which obviously lacks a hyperdrive. I guess we could assume that he found this mystery TIE.
There is a theory that it was Vaders Tie. Which likely was highly modified
@@jonathanmiller2161 Highly modified to also survive a huge reactor explosion, a violent crash landing into an ocean, and to then sit idle for over thirty years in a ruin. Pretty amazing mods to something which started off as a disposable vehicle for disposable pilots.
Very interesting idea on this, we'll keep this information on note
I love this take! It’s head canon for me now and I would love to see it transfer on screen some day, some how.
Imagine being an ILM worker from back then scrolling TH-cam and finding this video
Ooooh, another mystery imperial ship in the "Pride of Tarlandia", we see it's bridge and that's it, maybe you could render that
Isn't that one of the ships that the legendary Baron Soontir Fel failed to protect at Endor?
That's just a standard Star Destroyer bridge. The Falcon flies around it at start of shot and same width as ESB.
@@ShannonCarter55 it's not, it's much larger, and it's the bridge of a communications battlecruiser
@@grandayatollah5655 not that large. Don't forget few shots later we have a massively undersized CR90. Besides Star Destroyer bridges should've been bigger in ESB as it makes the bridge crew miniature people compared to the Falcon.
@@ShannonCarter55 it's supposed too be big, it's the bridge of a battlecruiser
Was the vigilant tie-fighter the only one on DS2 with hyperdrive? What kind of tie Ben Solo found and got to Exegol?
Canonically it was a Tie Scout (unknown model designation) which was for sure less well-appointed than the Tie/Vigilant.
@@entropy11 perhaps the Vigilant was an upgrade to the Scout class, but more expensive, therefore less common, or the other way around
Ben solo found a TIE plot. The most powerful of TIE variants
i was randomly recommended this video last night. im glad it was because ive just been binge watching all of his videos ever since. These are so good, glad i found this channel.
Love how you included Ryan’s models. (Don’t know if I spelt his name right) I really like the star fighter animations that he designs.
I know they rely on the equipment to see, but I've always thought that the wings would make the pilot have terrible peripheral vision
Ship with two extra pixels: *Exists*
EC Henry: *Turns it into a new, special ship*
Has anyone ever noticed how the side of the tie fighter looks like the separatist logo
😆
Im just spitting facts
I love this head canon for the Tie Vigilant!
You should make this as a fan produced model. Perhaps an STL file for 3D printers? Love it! I remember the toys and think it's great that they were actually used in the movies.
I think "Tie Protector" is a better name
Sounds like a rip-off Tie Defender
Tie Guard better
@@firedelete2171 also nice but both are better than his name tho
shut up woman
How much would it cost to have you desighn a custom ship
I am also curious as to this question.
I too would like to know. One idea for an easy one could be the "Twin-X" which would be the same school of thought that led to the real world Twin Mustang (basically, like the name suggests, two mustangs attached side-by-side).
I love your explanation! I really do think that this is perfect since the Empire would only need to mass produce regular TIE fighters.
You're right since regular TIEs don't have a hyperdrive installed, they're gonna need some long range fighters. Awesome video!
headcannon
"this is where the fun begins"
I had one of those little tie fighter toys, maybe still do, not sure. But if you pulled that little protrusion out the back, it was attached to the little pilot molded into his seat. I think the Darth Vader one did as well. Good video!
That TIE variant was also sold by Tonka in 1995 in a larger play scale version. I currently still have it and always questioned what that big box in the back was compared to other TIEs!
I seem to remember the back section was for Playability.. Otherwise you couldn't hold the thing as the wings Always fell off. I hot glued mine and mounted them in a deep picture frame.
I can not get enough of your content, regardless of if it's new, or old!
This was a really cool explanation about the begging the scenes of the movie. The story you created for the fighter was just as awesome!
I think there was a rumour that in the first or second film there was a shoe placed in a large effects shot. Never looked myself. I grew up watching them and now love what is on offer. May the force be with you. loved the video
Lucas: runs out of money for computer art so buys a group of cheap toys to make up for it
EC: allow me to make up my own canon on the spot!
