you are 100% right about this topic. i have 2 guitars i bought 3 years ago that have maybe 10 hours of play time on. lol with that being said i havent bought another guitar since. why? because i simple dont need another one. good topic, thanks for sharing!
We buy guitars for diffrent reasons and different sounds we want when we are writting music, then they collect dust because it's use is no longer needed. The best players can make the worst guitars sound incredible becuase they can make that connection with the guitar. I have the belief that the the soul and song of the tree is in all guitars and can make a connection with the player. There is a sybiotic releationship, and an instant connection that is made with a guiatr and it lets you both sing. There is nothing sadder than a guitar that is not played and not allowed to share its voice... not alllowed to sing. I try to cycle my guitars as I practice so I never lose the feel or connection.
I just like guitars as projects, mostly for paintings. You can get a guitar that sounds as good and plays as good as a 4,000 LP for 200 bucks. My two favorite guitars of my collection to play are those two. Only real difference is that i feel bad when my expensive guitars get dinged. Guitars are like engagement rings. Odds are you will never get more out of an expensive one than you will a cheap one. Its the hands that ring/guitar is on that makes it valuable.
This is a great therapy video, i have 19 guitars 2 bass guitars 5 guitar heads and 4 4x12 cabs, and im always looking to buy another guitar, when I dont need it. I think at this point it would be more fun to actually build a guitar like you did and kind of make it your own. Great vid for us gear junkies, GAS is real thing 😋
In the modern TH-cam world where incessant infomercials have become so prevalent that people think being sold to constantly is *normal* your videos like this are very much needed. Ppl- it doesn’t need to be an all or none thing- just consciously set aside whatever time you have to spare on a regular basis and *practice* and play the guitar instead of spending time looking your brain with GAS exercises I’m sure there are guitarists out there where the majority of their time with guitar is spent online rather than playing. Recognize your reward system has become highjacked by the quick dopamine hit dynamics of GAS
Collecting is great and all but I'd personally rather have a handful of instruments that I really connect with and play regularly rather than a massive collection where I hardly play any of them. I've become really picky about what I keep in my collection even though I still do buy and sell stuff now and then. I genuinely would take my partscaster over a fender american ultra any day of the week. To each their own though.
I have 4 guitars: 1) Yamaha Pacifica H/S/S style. 2) Gibson Les Paul Special with standard humbuckers 3) Squire Telecaster 4) Peavey JF-1 semi-hollow body. Each are unique unto themselves, and have their own tonalities. I have no desire to get any more guitars, and I play them all. I don't care what it says on the headstock, either. When I tried out each of these guitars, each one spoke to me after playing it.
The issue is that most of us are guitar owners, not artists. So, this is not about having a good enough guitar so we can be better players, this is only about having. Now, I too asked this question after buying another korean Ibanez that I didn't need. So I noticed the "having" aspect about this, my nihilism kind of kicked in and I stopped buying. And the same as you, I have guitars that I don't even play anymore, so I'll try to sell them, not inspired by minimalism, but because I'm in need of money right now 😅
The great thing is that nobody likes to think about is that most of the guitars we own these days even the super cheap ones are probably of better quality guitars than what our heroes recorded with decades ago, sure a true 1959 Les Paul is going to be worth a fortune in money and have great sounding pickups but I do not think it will actually play as well as a $200 Les Paul copy of today, as technology has advanced with cnc machines to make even the cheapest guitars that alot of people stick their noses up at of a better quality instrument than legendary expensive ones from the past that people garner as the best because that is what our idols played, but other than their price and our heroes playing them in the past I do not think they are any better quality than todays guitars & I am willing to bet today has the best quality guitars statistically than past eras
I bought a Gibson SG Standard in 06 with my graduation money. I put it thru hell for a long time, I'm lucky its still playable. I genuinely fell in love with it in the last 5 years. It took me that long to understand. I just bought my first Gibson Les Paul Standard 2 weeks ago. I intend to buy one more SG and one more Les Paul. In that order. This new LP is inspiring me to be a better player
I bought 93 Korean strat and put vintage bill lawrence lead humbucker on it that was given to me by a friend. Plays and sounds as good as any guitar i have ever owned. 125 dollars.😊
I had fun building Teles. Shopping for rare parts, learning to spray some nitro. Built one for and one for my son. I never feel the need to buy any more Teles. I bought a Casino Worn for my birthday because I wanted a hollow body. I’m good for now, having fun playing in a 60s cover band. Building Marshall 18 watt amps when I have time. Life is too good to always be gassing for stuff. I love your message! Go play guitar! 😊
Pulled a trigger recently on a new used guitar and I'm glad I did, kicks previous guitars assess and now it's my number one (of nine) 🤷 previous were okay and still some of them are, but when the amount of awesomeness becomes much different then i start selling not loved ones.
I've been dealing with this lately too. Now to just get my Bullet Mustang back. Laugh all you want but that Mustang and an old Behringer are 2 of the most comfortable electric guitars I've ever played.
I had one of those Fender Player Mustangs for a while. I sold it and sort of feel like an idiot. It was really comfortable to play. It sounded great too. Now I've got a Fender Duo-Sonic. It feels good too, but I just liked the Mustang better. I think it's all in my head. You know, the one that got away.
Great video, and something we all need to ask ourselves, "Do I really need it?" I've had to talk myself down quit a few times. If it's your dream guitar/amp/etc, then go for it if possible. Anything else, try to be objective and wait and see if you still have that same itch for it
Have as many as you like. I see people wasting money on things that give far less satisfaction. It's a hobby enjoy it. If you have disposable income it's yours to spend before you die.
This video couldn’t come soon enough. I have to sell most of my gears due to some financial mistakes. Amongst them, a Gibson LP 01’ standard, SC20H and many of my pedals. I can keep the LTD KH-602 purple my 5150 combo and most of my BOSS WAZAs. Thanks for making this video.
I hear you, I've been buying gear for many years, and plan to retire early so I'm buying even more while I'm still working, and not just guitar gear, some bass, but keyboards and synths. I have about 35 guitars; 3 basses, 5 organs including 3 with 25 to 30 note pedalboards, piano, at least 15 synths including full modular rigs, a high end workstation and a high end arranger. 11 tube amps, 1 x 40W, 2x50W, 7x100W, 1x180W, 1xdigital modeler amp. My 100W are mostly half stacks with one full stack for my 100W plex. Helix Floor, HX-Effects, Fractal FM9, and a handful of pedals (not really a pedal user). There there are software plugins, DAW, and other software. I have more gear on the way too.
This is sooooo true…. Until about a month or so ago I owned 6 guitars. I own my very first guitar I bought 30 years ago (squier bullet Strat from 94), fender American vintage ii 57, Gibson sg special in ebony with 2 p90’s, Gibson sg faded, Ibanez ax120fmt and two peavey Strats. I’ve bought and sold over 100 of these damn things over the last 15 years. Guess which ones are my favorites? The squier bullet, the Ibanez, and two peavey Strats. None of these guitars are worth over 200 bux a piece. The 3 I have that are over a grand a piece though I just look at and say why? I’m going to bring it down to two Strats, one for me and one for the kid and my Ibanez. It’s all I need.
I always ask myself those questions when I’m looking into buying a guitar. Now, I’m to a point where I play (mainly) three guitars. One main, one backup, and one for drop tuning.
I currently own about 14 guitars. That's plenty for me. Each one has its own role and purpose. So i do play all 14 guitars. I do not have any interest in any more guitars because I've got the type of guitars i wanted and actually needed. One of the 14 guitars was given to me. A Peavey Wolfgang Special. All it needed was a tremolo bridge upgrade. I upgraded to a genuine Floyd Rose. That guitar plays and sounds phenomenal. I play it alot. So yes, i do appreciate all the guitars i own. I need no other guitars.
Right now I’m smitten by a sunburst Vintera II 60s Strat. I think it could be my favorite. But I’m also trying to take a deep breath and wait because I have three amazing strats already. Appreciate the tips. It’s right on time with what I’m facing 👊
I own too many guitars. Many I play regularly, some near every day, some are cheap, some very expensive. ALL hang on the walls and many are potential trade goods but I enjoy them. I work to improve the herd through smart deals and trading up. Looking for a OM42 Martin right now. Likely trade in 2-3 others plus some cash to do it but it is a beautiful and sweet sounding instrument. I will never need a better 6 string acoustic. I have played dreads for years but when sitting the body size is now bothering my shoulder. The 000/OM body size is a lot more comfortable. I have played a D35 for years but now it is getting too uncomfortable, I am OAS. (old as sh*t) But like you I have some that are beautiful but get no attention so will maybe consolidate several into one VERY nice one I will likely play daily.
I’m going through this right now. My number one favorite is the Gibson/Epiphone inspired 355. I have two other LPs, but that guitar feels so good…. I saw Stuart Matthewson play a gold top on a Sade dvd. It never left my mind. Now that I’m a better musician, I want that gold top with p90s. Do I need it? No. Does it do something different that my other LPs can’t? Well they have humbuckers so, maybe? I just know I’m going for that gold top. And I’ve always wanted a 12 string. I gotta do it. lol
Someone had to build the structure you live in before you could live in it. Your vehicle had to be made before you could drive it. Here's to the guitar repairing, restoring, building, wiring, modding, and assembling people in the world. We create so that others can create with our creations. I love having a vision of a guitar build and then creating that vision. If they perform better and look better than what most people put together, then that is on me. I apologize in advance. It's rough out here. But I am happy.
You can't have just one gun. Or guitar. I just got back into playing guitar and bought 500 dollar gretsch because I'm a Malcolm fanboy. I will shop an acoustic, a shredder (kramer or ibanez), a bass and i think I'm good. Already have my own Roland drum kit. Then I need some harmonica. Then bagpipes. A marching snare because I want to join a Scottish pipe group.
Just sold a guitar today I had 3 I didn’t use that one for a year and 8 months . And when I compared it to my USA strat that I recently I acquired it was nothing
All the answers are NO. But, as a longtime fan of Pantera and Dimebag, I had to buy a Dean ML. And I will hold onto that until the nursing home takes it away. There is one other that has value, that I will keep. The others come and go. Gotta be able to let some things go, or trade. Have fun with it. That's why we are here.
I've got a good start, a cheap tele, a cheap sg, and a vintage super strat. I can get more sounds than I can use. Don't feel like I'm missing anything and enjoy playing what I have. If I see a good deal on something worth picking up I won't hesitate, but I'm not actively looking. Jake, you might need to let a few (dozen) go.
...its all about the hunt, but Im certainly glad I got obsessed with chasing guitars and acquiring a lifelong skill,... as opposed to other collectable based hobbies. ...50 watches in your collection wouldn't have improved you're time reading abilities much;)
You must be reading my mind. I just inherited some money. I already have everything I need. But I'm seriously considering buying a Majesty. My main guitar is a Schecter SLS FRS Evil Twin, and it's amazing. Buying a Majesty will not improve my abilities nor my social status in any way. The only reason I'm buying it is because I'll probably never have the cash again. The Fishman in the Evil Twin is about as good as it gets for my style, and I'm not expecting the Majesty to sound "better." The piezo feature is interesting but i have a 1979 Guild acoustic already. I can't really come up with a single good reason to buy the Majesty. But, I'm going to...
Hey Jake, Good for you showing restraint buying that Gibson Les Paul. I do ask myself the same questions when thinking about buying a new instrument. one question I often ask is "will this instrument inspire me?" Big Jake looks awesome 🍺
Great video! I also own approximately 50 guitars, and ask myself the same philosophical questions as you do. Sometimes the philosophy is half the fun! What did I learn from this video? That I may “need” a 5150 classic amp. There is no hope.
I got a highland. I wouldn't trade for anything a hedgehog 15 years still going strong and I've bought many other guitars and wasted my money cuz they don't play as good. They don't sound as good and they don't feel as good and I think it's just because we get used to one thing and that's what we love that one thing that makes you feel it
Okay, if you're asking, I say buy it if you can afford it. Why? If you can get more out of it than you can buy it for, then it is a money-maker. That is something your other guitar can't do for one. And my second reason is that I have never played a real one. So buy it, play it, fall in love with it, or sell it and make money. Win-win.
LOL how many 🎸 guitars does a guitar player need ? JUST 1 MORE! 😂😂😅😊 LOL .. Put your money 🤑💰💰 💵💵💵 into multiple effects pedal with SIMS . Speaker Sims Amp Sims etc .. Cheers 🍻 🥃🥃 🎸 🎵🎶🎶🎶
Here's some dubious advice: don't buy the Gibson Standard. Put money aside, sell a couple of your other Gibsons, and find a used Custom Shop Gibson R8 Les Paul. I suspect that could end your GAS for Les Pauls
So, if we are to stop buying new guitars, stop modding our guitars, and all our guitars are good enough as they are, then I guess you kind of boxed yourself in to not showing any new guitars you buy, not showing any guitar mods on your channel, and not changing anything on any of your guitars on your channel. It will seem hypocritical if you do, now. Just a thought.
If you listen to everything I said in each video, I didn’t say “never” to do any of these things. I basically said “be happy with what you have unless X, Y, or Z.” We live in a society that makes us think we must continue to consume instead of looking around and appreciating the things we already have. I will continue to mod, do guitar reviews, etc. for those who have asked themselves the requisite questions and decided to move forward with a new guitar purchase or a mod. I said that we may not need to buy another guitar if it doesn’t do anything new for us. But what if it does? I said not to buy new guitars because they are hyper inflated. But what if it’s on sale? I said not to mod our guitars because the mojo might escape or it might take away its spirit. But what if a cheap mod would take that existing guitar to the next level? Just like everything else in life, nuance matters. This channel exists to address the nuance. The recent videos exist to advise people to think about these questions before making decisions one way or the other. It is not hypocritical of me to continue making the content I always have; I have not boxed myself in. Rather, I will continue to make content for myself and those who have made the decision to move forward in one way or another. I understand your position on this but I respectfully disagree.
@@BigJakeMusic Ok, I agree with this reply. Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention. I will leave my comment so that others may have a little more clarity, in case they missed these points also. Rock on.

I have a severe case of GAS at all times it seems. However, I have learned to curb that greatly.
I try myself... except when life has taken away my inspiration and enduring personal issues... eventually I come back...
I just like guitars as projects, mostly for paintings.

In the modern TH-cam world where incessant infomercials have become so prevalent that people think being sold to constantly is *normal* your videos like this are very much needed.
Ppl- it doesn’t need to be an all or none thing- just consciously set aside whatever time you have to spare on a regular basis and *practice* and play the guitar instead of spending time looking your brain with GAS exercises
I’m sure there are guitarists out there where the majority of their time with guitar is spent online rather than playing.
Recognize your reward system has become highjacked by the quick dopamine hit dynamics of GAS
These are good affirmations

I’m willing to agree with this
Love the positive vibes 👍✌️

Additional guitars have diminishing returns. I think all of us think about being a 1 acoustic and 1 electric player.
I had fun building Teles. Shopping for rare parts, learning to spray some nitro. Built one for and one for my son. I never feel the need to buy any more Teles. I've owned Vintage/Custom Shop/Custom Order and after Retiring from Playing Live....if it Stays in Tune "I'm All Good"! Spot On Video!
Have as many as you like. I see people wasting money on things that give far less satisfaction. It's a hobby enjoy it. If you have disposable income it's yours to spend before you die.
Yeah, but does it really make you happy or should you spend the time playing instead of gear shopping?
Well said Jake.
(But this attitude won't get you that Sweetwater sponsorship!)
I know it’s very hard, but you’re making the right decision. Keep the things that are sentimental. Everything else can be replaced someday ❤️
I hear you, I've been buying gear for many years, and plan to retire early so I'm buying even more while I'm still working, and not just guitar gear, some bass, but keyboards and synths.

I can only speak for myself but I think I’m looking for that one guitar that I’ll wear the frets out on.
Nice cutout in the background. Hes the key to all of this
So, what else am I supposed to spend my money on?
Great video! I also own approximately 50 guitars, and ask myself the same philosophical questions as you do. Sometimes the philosophy is half the fun! What did I learn from this video? That I may “need” a 5150 classic amp. There is no hope.
I would buy the Gibson anyway. 😆
😶😬🤫🤐
so in the end you bought the guitar anyways? ;)
😬😶🤫🤐
I got a highland. I wouldn't trade for anything a hedgehog 15 years still going strong and I've bought many other guitars and wasted my money cuz they don't play as good. They don't sound as good and they don't feel as good and I think it's just because we get used to one thing and that's what we love that one thing that makes you feel it
My main issue is my skill, I'm well aware that my guitar is better than me :)
Win-win.
Hahaha, I got way more guitar (3) than I deserve because money is easier to acquire than talent.
Time to start selling guitars Jake.
Life is short. Buy what you like and sell when you have too many!
LOL how many 🎸 guitars does a guitar player need ? JUST 1 MORE! 😂😂😅😊 LOL .. Put your money 🤑💰💰 💵💵💵 into multiple effects pedal with SIMS . Speaker Sims Amp Sims etc .. Cheers 🍻 🥃🥃 🎸 🎵🎶🎶🎶
You got the Gibson didn’t you?
Yea.
I have 3 guitars - 335 - Strat - and acoustic….
Poly is a better finish 10 to 1 over nitro unless you love your guitars looking road worn in no time.
A very important topic!
Greetings from Brazil! United against G.A.S.! Conscious consumption!
Here's some dubious advice: don't buy the Gibson Standard. Put money aside, sell a couple of your other Gibsons, and find a used Custom Shop Gibson R8 Les Paul. I suspect that could end your GAS for Les Pauls
same here as yours...
Go for the old school 5150 60W 212 combo and thank me later.
I want to but a Chinese country gentleman guitar for 300.00 im i crazy 😮
"resale value" is the doucheiest reason ever when considering any gear
It’s never good enough.
Referring to Gibson as "master built instruments " is pretty humorous.
Rock on.
