  • I visited the Karoo National Park in July of 2021 while driving down from Limpopo to Cape Town. Join me as I explore this unique park in 24 hours.
“The Karoo National Park, founded in 1979, is a wildlife reserve in the Great Karoo area of the Western Cape, South Africa near Beaufort West. This semi-desert area covers an area of 750 square kilometres. The Nuweveld portion of the Great Escarpment runs through the Park. It is therefore partly in the Lower Karoo, at about 850 m above sea level, and partly in the Upper Karoo at over 1300 m altitude.
The Karoo National Park is a sanctuary for herds of springbok, gemsbok (or Oryx), Cape mountain zebra, red hartebeest, black rhinoceros, eland, kudu, klipspringer, bat-eared foxes, black-backed jackal, ostriches, and, since fairly recently, lions. It also has the greatest number of tortoise species of any park in the world - five in total.”

What options are there for tar only routes? I don't like to drive on gravel with my car.

Alexander, your review of Karoo was really sad! Had you continued, rather than doing an about turn on the drive, this would have taken you on a circular route, which you did mention in your commentary, bringing you back to the top of Klipspringer and in the process taking you through a far more interesting part of the park. It there that we have enjoyed sightings of both lion and rhino. Admittedly one must decide on whether doing a visit to the park or merely a night stop there.

Hi Mike, yes you’re actually right. I did leave feeling a little sad and disappointed, but I imagine that had I stayed one more day that my experience would have been entirely different. Even though my stay was short, I did still really enjoy my stay and loved the unique beauty of the place. I would love to visit again someday and experience the entire park. Thanks for your feedback, I really appreciate it and hope that you enjoyed the video.
      Regards,
      Alexander

Hi Alexander, when you return suggest you consider Afsaal Cottage for your stay. Stand-alone accommodation at a remote location ( minimum 2 night stay ) is ‘next level’ as Ed Barth might say!

      I’ll definitely remember that, thanks!
