It must be quite a challenge to craft with color blindness. I can only imagine. But it doesn't stop you and that's what's so great. Keep up the good work!
My dad spent years as a tv repairman and worked on all types of electronics (before they were computerized). He was color blind and usually managed to tell the colors of the wires apart, but on occassion, he would consult us on the wire colors.
I primarily work with UV resin but I'm a huge fan of painting the polish directly onto a cured piece, letting it set, and then putting a layer of resin above it. I've also used gel polish, where you put it under the UV lamp to set. I especially do this with tiger-eye magnetic polish. Makes a great galaxy effect!
One thing I love is that the appreciation of art/a piece is subjective and like you said, you'd use it again if it was the look you were going for. Rather than dismiss it. Tfs
Before I was introduced to resin, I painted 4 photo frames with nail polish exclusively. And I don't mean just a frame/border! These were full scale paintings made with nail polish. Pity I can't attach a photo here, but I assure you it was fun! A bit like resin pour but with less control (and the "paint" came in tiny amounts, so my paintings were small, about 20x20 cm). The good thing was that some photo frames and random nail polishes are quite cheap, so each painting only cost me under 5 GBP/USD.
Lol 😆 I have headphones on and live in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA 🇺🇸 where it is hot and humid and we get downpours out of nowhere. Actually, we are expecting rain tonight so I thought oh my gosh I didn't think it was going to rain THAT MUCH, and so I got up to take a look out of the window expecting a storm but what I got was a peek at a VERY DRY CAR 🤣 Anywho, can I just say how much I truly appreciate the time and effort, you put into experimenting - which really benefits us, not to mention the cost of materials that you have to absorb with doing these experiments. I hope to buy you not only one cup of coffee in the near future, but the entire pot. ❤
I paint my silicone mold with nail polish and let it dry before adding resin and it works quite well. It does stain the mold somewhat but doesn’t seem to effect future pours.
I've tried the nail polish and had two different results ; one of them I used a small amount of nail polish and they came out beautifully. The other one I used was a cheaper nail polish and I think I used too much because it never set. God what a mess. I'm glad you had good results. I 'm definitely going to try it again and be really careful about how much polish I use.
I saw this video before, but rewatched it and realized these would look really cool with the stained glass projects you've showed us! Im totally trying this today!! Thanks as always Steve! Funny thing, my husband has got to where he recognizes your voice! He'll ask me, are you watching Steve? Im like, of course I am!!!
I really enjoy these videos! I have a huge excess of eyeshadow and nail polish that I'm about to break out as I do my first resin project (coasters!). Thanks for all of the information. 🖤
Such a fun and affordable way to tint resin. Here in the USA we have a chain store (Dollar Tree), that sells nail polish for $1.00. I even found a 3-pack of small bottles for $1.00. So many choices! TFS
I'm new to resin and I am finding your videos very helpful... I wouldn't say that mold with the crinkles in it is ruined. I would take a paint pen or some inks and paint on and wipe off leaving color in the cracks I think that would look neat. then dome the clear over it. or attach an old looking picture or gems or... then dome over it. I feel like I need some bangle molds now. and some caftan dresses so I can be like Mrs. Roper. LOL That's from an old American TV show called three's company.
I tried my polish but i was using a weird, harsh-smelling brand of resin and i felt like the fumes when mixing them was gona poison me! Haha! I kinda sent myself into a panic cuz my lungs kinda hurt but now I think it was just a panic attack. Anyway, I'd rather use mica or alcohol inks! 😊😛 However, nail polish works wonderfully on painting resin pieces or inside molds even! Thank you! Learning a lot from u! 💜
I liked the pendants and the bangle but wasn't a fan of the coaster. Thrilled to know how these turn out, i have too many polishes to count so gonna try these in a few molds myself
Really good video. Looking for tips as I'm looking forward to having a go at this resin craft. Got loads of eyeshadow and never heard of mica until seeing this resin craft. Didn't know mica is in everything and is what makes the cars, makeup shimmer etc. However the abuse that occurs mining the stuff is not a surprise
As you say, you do these so we don’t have to and that is really appreciated Steve. 😘 What do you do with all the ‘stuff’ you make in your experiments? I have this vision of you surrounded by boxes of ‘things’! Though I’m sure that’s not the case! Take care. 🤗
@@SteveMcDonaldArtsandCrafts I did this! the nail polish starts to set by itself in the resin and then you can move it around to make very cool designs.
Thank you for doing this. I wanted to know if this would work with nail polish/varnish mixed in or if it would be forever sticky n never cure. I have tons of nail Laquer that would look really nice with the few resin projects I have in mind. Thank you.
Honestly, you picked great colors together! Why? Because you can see TONES of colors if not the colors themselves. Those who are colorblind learn to discern colors based on tone, which is something that those of us who aren't struggle with sometimes. You can see subtle differences where we cannot. In many ways, this is an advantage. If you get the tones right, the color doesn't matter. All colors go together in nature. Matter of fact, my ex mother in law painted before she went completely blind (retinitis pigmentosa). She was able, in her later years, to tell what color of paint was what (at least the base color) by weight. Amazing stuff.
Mermaid pigment works, the same with holo powder. Both mixed in the resin or painted on. Chrome painted on would work too, I think, could be great with the bubble technique! Great suggestion!
there’s a type of polish called gel polish that is essentially uv resin and you have to cure it under a uv lamp! and the glitters and pigments used in polish is basically what u use in resin as well
I was really surprised that this actually worked. They turned out really pretty. I wonder how it would work if you added more nail polish to try to make it more opaque?
Some polish works and some changes either color of resin or polish. I've been doing resin for a year or so. I've always used polish. You can't add a lot of polish though.
Thank you so much for sharing this. I have a lot of nail polish and will definitely try it. Does it matter what type of nail polish you use? The type I have is the gel polish.
What happens if you suspend orbees (water crystal gel spheres often used to passively water plants) in resin? Do they remain imbued with water or so they shrink backdown?
I love your videos. Very informative. I have a question for you, can you use clay in resin and what are the long term effects. I can make the flowers in resin but I like the way they look in clay. Thanks for your help
I know I'm not steve but yes I believe you can use clay in resin or to coat clay with resin. I've seen many people do it and pictures of finished products
Is keeping the resin still for five minutes ALL you do for bubbles??? 🙀 Mine still had way too many bubbles. Or do you do something else when you mix the resin n hardener in the first place??
Hi, Steve. Thanks for your experiments, very interssing. A Question: Can i use nail varnish as transparent colour mixin with eyshadow powder oder with acrylic colours? Are this dangeres, are ther chemical reactions? Does it work together? Please, can you try it in a video?

I love this--"I do this so you don't have to" perfection--thanks for being the great mentor you are!!
I knew it would work. I've been putting nail polish in my resin for years.
Yep, seriously old news. lol. But this guy also says wear a mask or ventilator for nail polish 🤣🤣
Not old news to everyone though is it
No it's not old news. I'm grateful for this because I'm now getting into resin and was wondering if I needed to buy dye
@@lilly3am it’s that because its mixed with Resin?
If u use more polish will it be darker or will it effect the resin?
Thanks you answered one of my questions 👍🏾
Oh wow I have so many bottles of nail polish.
Gel nail polish works great for a uv resin tint too.

Steve for being colored blind . You make some amazing crafts. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Such pretty, translucent colors. You could make a faux stained glass art piece with that mixture.👍
Nail polish doesn’t usually have names because there are soooo many various shades that are so similar, most brands just give them numbers.
This turned out better than I expect, and I really liked the color of the bracelet, lemonade colors!

I love the pastel pink color in the Bengal

You can make good acrylic Nails using some old cheap false nails as mould very tricky not tried it myself
Thank you! Also, what about gel nail polish? You most likely need to use UV to cure the gel nail polishes.
I'd try it with uv resin instead. Then the light could cure both.
This is amazing! I almost didnt watch this cause I figured there was no way it would work. I wonder how metallic/ opaque nail polish would fair now.

I wonder what would happen if you put enough polish in to make the colors more opaque if they would react or set properly!
Do they keep their colour over time?
