I accidentally came across a way to get powdered solder without sanding, scrapping, grinding etc.. If you use a brass scouring pad to clean your tip (which you should do instead of a wet sponge) then you will find dust size particles of solder at the bottom of the container. A simple pop can cut in half is great to hold the brass scouring pad. Every time you clean your iron, the brass will scrape off tiny particles of solder that will gather at the bottom of the pop can. Spread this out on a flat container and gently blow off any flux or burnt debris, then sift it to remove any larger pieces of solder and it's ready to be mixed with paste.

@@koolhifi8934 Put salt in a cup, get a 24v or higher voltage power supply, put the solder in the positive and some metal in the negative, this will sinterize the solder into nanoballs far smaller than what you can get mechanically, it will let you make the expensive kind of solder paste this way.

Might be better to use a file to powder the solder so you dint have a lot of garbage in the solder.

Instead of using a Q-Tip to pile up the solder dust you should have used a razor blade. It would have been quicker and cleaner.

Guys below relax.....there is a thing called LEAD FREE SOLDER! Just do not use leaded solder to try this and you will NOT have to worry about lead poisoning! I would not go through all of this trouble, though, to make soldering paste, but if you just don't have any around at the moment and REALLY need it then.....maybe.

Inhaling solder remains dangerous regardless of the material used (even if some are a little more dangerous). Just, always wear a mask when doing this kind of work. Even a medical mask is always better than nothing for occasional work and covid has probably left us with some in stock somewhere.

that's a lot of work for so little payback.. awesome idea though but if you're doing repair work it probably would be cheaper to buy pre-made.

And it's full of junk from the sanding paper. Particle size isn't small enough for use with stencil. Not to mention this solder job would have been possible with plain soldering wire as the large concave tip is doing the distribution.

In fact, it is practical when the product itself is difficult to obtain or even more expensive because of this difficulty or if you need it urgently.

When we work in welding, we wear a mask. When we prepare a product, we also wear it. This technique is no more or less dangerous than welding.
Reading you, one might believe that opening a bottle of hydrochloric acid is more dangerous than actually using it.

Would of been easier with a wood file it took me like 10 min or less to get 4 times what he got idk how much time he wasted but by the look of the video and him having a hard time sanding it must of been a while.

When you can find it which is not necessarily the case everywhere without having to have it delivered with a shipping price more expensive than the product itself.
