This last week Kalei and I went to another volcanic island across the pacific, Java, and to the wonderful city of Bandung. We checked in on the development of our new line, ‘Oli, and documented some of that here for you.
Husni Nasution started Genta Guitars in 1959 with a goal to make high quality musical instruments. A few decades ago my father started working with him and his sons, Awan and Suar, teaching them about ‘ukulele and creating the Pono line of ukulele and guitar. Hunsi passed away some years back and now that my father has retired, this is a 2nd generation collaboration between our two families on a new line, ‘Oli.
The culture and warmth of the people in this factory and around the city of Bandung is always astounding to me. There’s truly an Aloha spirit and the effort put in by all of us collectively will ensure that ‘Oli delivers its meaning, joy and happiness.
All NEW original song ideas from Kalei! (Pretty cool stuff, right?!) All three instruments played are tenors. The first is from the Hawaiian Koa line, the second is a cedar top Macassar ebony, and the third is an all quilted maple. (Recording w a travel recorder, we'll come with our regular sound samples soon for proper comparing)
Talks are with Suar Nasition (His brother Awan runs the company as well and I’ll have to interview him next time) And also with Derry Surya Ganda Permana, manager of quality control.
Hope you enjoy! Let us know your thoughts and mahalo for watching and sharing!
Kalei's musical spirit shines brightly! Good luck with your Oli" ukuleles
Yes, and thank you!
OMG! Amazing vid and beautiful playing by Kalei! And so much awesome stuff I spotted on the 'Oli ukulele--sunburst 🤯 and the EXTREME detail in those inlays?? Not to even mention the lattice bracing and tone or beauty of the thing!
Amazing to meet some of the team from Genta working at the 'Oli luthier workshop! S U A R! So dashing, what a genta-leman! I just got into some of his music recently and it reminded me a lot of the album Sino by Cafe Tacvba, one of my favs! Dreamy kind of psychedelic tones, love it.
The team over in Java seems so chill, it's so apparent yall have a great relationship and that there is aloha in their craft and love in their instruments. My love back to all of you!
Yer so cool! Thank you so much. Yes, the team over there is truly a blessing.
So stoked Kalei went along on the trip as you guys chatted about this in your podcast. Wow, them inlays are a piece of Art. They sound lovely Andrew, new song for new Uke 👌. Take care and safe journeys. Thanks to owner for taking the time to explain their history, always fascinated and gives provenance to how the luthiers homed their skills. Have a great week.
Yeah so glad he came! Thanks Mike!

Such an emotional video with all the music performed by Kalei and the insights in the working process of building Oli ukuleles. Thank you so much and all the best.
These headstock inlays are sooooooo beautiful. if I had enough money I would have bought all of these ukes…
Mahalo!
Diggin it. Would love to see more builders shops. This continues to be one of the most educational channels on TH-cam.
Mahalo!! ❤
Like the story of your two families and looking forward to seeing more Oli ukuleles at your site soon.

Thank you!

🙏🏼mahalo
I'm excited for this model!
Cheeheee!
I clocked Kalei in at at least Mach 5! My god! I think that's not actually sunburst, that's the left over scorch marks from Kalei playing each of those instruments, yowza
🤣I know right
Gossshh, I live near Bandung and I just missed once in a lifetime chance to meet Kalei 😭
Can’t say enough good things about my Pono. These luthiers are top-notch. The ‘Oli ukes look and sound great. Although we know Kalei could play a pineapple or a cigar box and it would sound great!
That cedar/ebony sound! Oooohweee! 🥰 Love the video, but what's up with some HMS foodie vlogs?! 😉
Thx Chris! Oh man, I started to but it's more fun to eat than film and the food was too good! 🤤
...and very cool video!
🙏🏼 mahalo!
Thank you for sharing. Where can these instruments be found in Hawaii?
They will be at our store, The Ukulele Site, soon!
Se bem que alguém do Brasil poderia importar alguns modelos.
