    No wonder Trevino dropped 6 shots in the final round. Imagine having to play 18 holes with someone as slow as Sanders. It's enough to drive a man to distraction.

      @Steve Smith I had a Porche 911 as my first car at 17 (it's been downhill since LOL--have a nice truck though). Jags are nice, in the 80s I always wanted the XJ6. BTW, What coast? I live 10 min. from HWY 1 in Southern Cal.

      @Steve Smith Wow, we make the best of wherever we are though. I feel that from you. BTW, my honeymoon in '95 was a drive from Ventura County to almost SanFrancisco....on $300, with 1/2 off coupons for everything. Wine, food....a week we'll never forget. We had the time of our lives, my wife and I. Hearst Castle and the beaches are a must if you come by Carmel...which is a beautiful little city. Will watch Bullit this summer for sure, it's been at least 10 years since I last saw it...awesome chase scenes. Love your music choice, I of course always have Beatles and U2 going, plus the 70s stuff you mention...What a fool believes is one of my all time favorites.

      Without a doubt the best bunker shot, I'd ever seen on 17; only other time i can think of, was when Seve hit a similar type bunker shot, but not from the downhill lie Sanders had to deal with.

    One of the most interesting moments in golf history. Brilliantly perfect commentary from Henry Longhurst, all live of course, yet it's so fantastic it sounds scripted and dubbed on later. Apparently Ben Hogan, watching on TV in Texas, shouted 'Walk away from that putt Sanders' after Doug suddenly bent down to remove what turned out to be a non-existent impediment on his line and then re-took his stance, it's clearly different from the first one and very awkward looking. Why didn't he just start again ? Lee Trevino, by then out of it, supported Doug all the way up the last, you can hear his distinctive voice shouting 'PERFECT !' as the first putt is on its way - then of course it died on that very deceptive little upslope before the hole. On the film which shows the putt from face on rather than from behind, Trevino is visible, and his anxiety as Doug bends down is clearly perceptible. That other film also shows the true length of the putt, much nearer 4 feet than 3, maybe even a little over 4 !
    Doug Sanders wrote that he'd always had a private superstition about white teepegs. On the 18th tee, needing a 4 to win after his astounding escape from the Road Bunker got him a 4 on the 17th, lee Trevino said 'Here Doug, use this it's one of Champagne Tony's'. Lee's caddie had been with Tony Lema, killed in a plane crash in 1966, who had won the previous St Andrews Open in 1964. Doug looked at the teepeg Lee had given him. It was white. He briefly considered saying no but dismissed the thought, it would be rude, insensitive and besides, on this short wide open last hole, what could possibly go wrong ?
    So he teed off using it.

      @Steve Smith I agree his second shot is what fundamentally caused the bogey. A bump and run is risky with the valley of sin in play. He played the right shot, but the tension caused him to hit it too hard. Instead of a 20-30 foot downhiller he left himself with a 50 foot one.

    • @ysgol3
      @ysgol3 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Steve Smith Oh yes, I agree, I was simply analysing the putt.
      Doug had got himself into that position by playing wonderful links style golf all week. He wrote that as he walked to the green before his second shot he was asking himself why he was doing this, he knew the distance, then decided to keep on walking because he thought he'd look ridiculous if he turned back half way !
      It seems that the pressure of the moment made him somehow convince himself that a pitch would be better than the run up he was so expert at.
      Hard to believe it was 50 years ago next month !

    • @ysgol3
      @ysgol3 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Steve Smith Yes dead right !
      I still think it's the best pressure bunker shot I've ever seen.
      I think Hogan's remark was about Doug breaking the cardinal rule that when you break out of your stance you must restart it completely.

    I was there that fateful day in 1970 as a 14 year old. It truly was amazing. You just have to feel sorry for Doug Saunders - the pain of that missed putt must have haunted him all his life. Nicklaus was a powerhouse. Interesting to note that Nicklaus, Saunders and Trevino all raise their left foot during their swing. I knew Nicklaus did it, but I hadn't realised Saunders and Trevino also did. It must have been more normal then and maybe that why I do it also. It certainly gives me more rotation in my swing.

    The most interesting fact about this tournament relates to Lee Trevino. He blew a 2 shot lead on the last day and finished third. But he has always said the pain and sorrow he felt for Saunders missing his short putt to win made him change his own putting style. As a direct result he won the next two Open championships playing the fastest game of any golfer of his generation.

    Hogan was right, Sanders should have started his putting routine over after bending over to pick up what turned out to be nothing in his line.

    one of the all time great convergence of circumstances. Trevino blows lead playing with the glacially slow Sanders. Sanders hits one of the all time great bunker shots. People say Nicklaus wasn’t a great bunker player. It didn’t really matter because he hardly ever hit it in the bunker. In his prime he would skip tournaments he had great chance winning to watch his kids little league games. If he wasn’t a great father he probably would have won 100 pga tournaments. Finishing 2nd 20 times in Majors is just amazing. I know it works both ways when winning with good breaks but imagine those if a few of those 20 players that finished 1st were never born Jack could have had say 30 majors
