  • The Duel in the Sun.
Two of the finest golfers the game has ever seen went toe to toe at the 106th Open Championship in 1977, the first to be held at the Ailsa Course, Turnberry.
Having separated themselves from the rest of the field, American duo Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus, who did battle just months earlier at Augusta, went head to head under clear skies.
In a final day that would be remembered for years to come, would it be major number 15 for the Golden Bear or could then 27-year-old Tom Watson claim his second Claret Jug?
Re-live this Great Final Day from 1977.

Is this the most iconic head-to-head in Open Championship history?

Match play for the Open. Two of the best with the most, bringing their A game. I know you guys love you some Watson, we do too. I still hate that he lost to Cink. The finest links player to ever live.

One of the great sporting memories of my childhood. We were visiting friends that day and my dad, a massive golf fan, was glued to their telly for the whole afternoon.

Nicklaus had the rare ability to want to stomp you into the dust while playing, to be bitterly disappointed to lose, and to be genuinely happy for his opponent's victory. Watson showed himself to be a champion on the course and truly courageous in real life when he resigned from his home club when it denied membership to the founder of H&R Block because he was Jewish. Two great champion golfers and two giant humans.

"When you've played your best but still lost, shake your opponent's hand, say " well done", mean it and remain friends" ---- Jack Nicklaus. This should be etched above every golf club entrance in the world.

That final green got Tom 32 years later!!! Almost identical shot in, different wind! Jack did hit a few thin right slaps at the end, 3 in a row. Still almost won!

peter mcevoy played with nicklaus in the first 36 holes of the 77 british open.
he said jack's ball striking that year was the best he ever saw but nicklaus's putting was dire.
jack lost the 77 open in the first two rounds.

What "make " was Watson's putter? Wilson designed by Arnold Palmer or 8802 ? Anyone know for sure ?

Jack made more long putts than he missed short ones, hence the 18 major victories.

Last head to head that was even in the same ballpark in todays game was Michelson vs Stenson also at the Open….but not as classic as this match

Greatest head to head match in golf history. CASE CLOSED. OPEN AND SHUT. Each man at one point had a two shot lead. Nicklaus then raised it to three, and Watson still came back to beat him!! If Jack's birdie on the 18th hole isn't the greatest of all time, tell me, what is? His errant drive landed in a spot where most elite players could barely advance it. Jack not only gets it out, he reaches the green. Now for the whipped cream on the sundae. He makes his thousand foot putt for birdie!! It actually was somewhere in the 60 foot range. After losing by one shot, Jack shakes young Tom's hand and tells him he was better that day. How great was Jack? He came to the Open the next year and won it again!! Enduring greatness, on and more importantly off the course.
