I took two workshops with Nita at Sand lake lodge years ago. Loved her demos. Very dynamic and fun to watch her create. She was so sharing in her knowledge and made it fun. I learned so much from her. Sweet lady and Inspiring artist.
I just came across her work recently and purchased this book. I am absolutely in love with how she painted and I imagine it would have been a thrill to see her working at it in person. :)
I just started painting watercolor this year and love this book. I agree that a lot of it is a bit more advanced, but I do think a beginner can get much of value out of it. For me her warm up exercises are great for fueling the imagination and also for helping me to find my own style. I think if you aren't a more advanced painter yet you have to really let go and be willing to experiment and not be discouraged . For me, I think that happy accidents can occur when you try techniques that might be out of your comfort zone. Also, just to do something and let it sit for a while and see what is going on in it. This is all part of learning. Thank for this great review and all of your tutorials and reviews.
The first full page spread is not the White House but the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan. Beautiful place, beautiful painting as are all of Anita Engel’s pieces.
She is awesome and TY for sharing...I covet her book. So many watercolorists love her. I wish we had more of her vids. Have only recently come to know her art and no wonder everyone loves her. She is painting in heaven now. I cannot wait to watch her there. Just another thing to look forward to in going home.
Great review of this beautiful book. Thanks for the reminder that technique comes last - I am just starting to appreciate how much there is to learn about watercolor ; it is easy to get overwhelmed. As you said, you can still take away much inspiration from the book even if your skill level is very different.

I don't know why I'm just now seeing your flip-through videos, but they are great. Funny that you say at the forefront of this video that it's more advanced, as this is probably the 2nd or 3rd book I retrieved from the library when I first started to paint! I was overwhelmed by her techniques, but so loved her style (and still do!) Thanks for offering us so darn much in the subject of watercolor! PS There are some cool, short online demos of hers here on youtube...just enough to give one an idea of how she creates her paintings.

i saw this book earlier and fell in love with the paintings!! i really want to buy it but im still debating with myself if i should just invest on something more beginner friendly but still has realistic approach since im still a beginner watercolorist
Haha, that's a great question actually! I think this one is REALLY good for showing you what is possible. I also bought several books that are more technical and for beginners, and I must say they helped, but seriously lacked in inspiration. So if you can afford it, I'll get this one too at some point 😊🎨
It looks amazing! but that's also a technique you use for photography. If you put the focus on a specific point of the photo and you achieve to blur the rest out ( some lenses can clur everything around an object ) than the whole image will look better. But to be honest, the realistic way she drew all this paintings is very very special. On some of the pictures it takes some time to understand that it is not real.... ^^
Yes - I agree (: It's a fascinating book, especially considering the actually technique she uses to achieve these effects. I find it challenging to get the same effect of photography in painting. I see some artists on Instagram using a combination of wet-in-wet and dry brush to get that.

I actually got a really good one for you! (: People in Watercolor by Trevor Waugh. Focuses on people and figures. Has lots of beginner advice and exercises. I loved it! If you search for Trevor Waugh on TH-cam I believe you’ll find some vids of his too.
Just want to share some thought about ART::::: "All art is, without a doubt, an expression of the soul; and within art we have drawing and painting, which as part of this expression brings three-dimensional elements to the two-dimensional plane of paper, creating the illusion with perspective and colors, light and shadows; expressing what the eye observes through the interpretation of a soul. There are no bad pieces, only bad receivers and observers who have not understood the perception of the soul, nor the intention of the artist." SO, just have fun doing your art...., that's what count..... GOOD DAY!!!!
Have this book since long too, it's amazing: the possibilities with watercolor are infinite, you can't do all these things with oils...it's the reason it's still the most important technique for all Designers...even in times of digital painting, which is certainly nice, but the abilities to paint traditionally make the difference...no possibility to push the UNDO button...;-) Studios like CD Project for example ( The Witcher) at Warsaw write often in their job offers that ability to paint traditionally is an advantage...since the breathtaking work of Walton Ford the arrogance of oil painters towards this medium is broken: He showed impressively you can even paint huge formats in watercolor in oil painting like mode...and you haven't to worry about all this toxic stuff without you can't handle oil paints without greater effort...:-)

I read this book a few years ago; it was okay, but I found her palette arrangement confusing. On another note, I refuse to have anything to do with Mackinac Island's Grand Hotel, pictured at 2:44 near the beginning of the book. If the hotel hadn't disgusted me so much with its policies and behavior, I would've featured it in my Mackinac Island travelogue.
Yeah, I heard that too, but now I'm glad I didn't. Anyway, this was a good review. I might try this sort of painting sometime to break out of my comfort zone; usually, I like more control in my watercolor painting.

the works contained in the book are fantastic but compared to other books on watercolor the book is excessively difficult and can generate a sense of frustration.
I don't mean to be rude here and I'm not watercolor expert but it looks like there artist just squirted wet paint on a wet paper, added more water and let it run. Then added whatever foreground the background called for. I mean what's so great about being loose?
