Sometimes it will take months before you realize a problem with buildup has been created. I'd hate that for you. I want to see how this gorgeous crown progresses!
I have 4c grade hair and wax does work well in slaying my thick hair during retwisting but luvlocs06 is correct. You won't notice the buildup until later down the road. Wax is not water soluble and it ends up making a home inside of your locs when your new growth matures. I used Jamaica Mango & lime in the first 8 months in my journey and the buildup was atrocious. Even multiple ACV detoxes couldn't get it out. I ended up using lemon dish detergent to cut the build up out. Your hair looks similar to my grade. Have you ever tried aloe vera gel ? The real organic kind straight from the plant . I cut the leaves and use the gel during retwisting. Works like a charm and Its water soluble . I've been growing my hair for three plus years. I recently cut the sides and back off . Afterwards I dissected the discarded locs and I could still see some buildup at the very end of my locs back when I used the wax. All the newer hair was clear.
I have locs as well, Try out Taliyah Wajid strong hold yellow top. It sulfate free , paraben free . No build up. It’s is a water base product but it come out of your hair easier . Just a suggestion. Love your locs btw !

But I wish I would of went with what I like,and I'm paying for it with my money. And now I regret it so much,but it is what it is,started my loc journey last year October 11th,and loving my results so far. My 4th round doing them,and praying the process continues to go well. Your predicament can be solved. It would be worse if it were the other way around. You can always thicken your locs. Manually by combining them or naturally by allowing them to marry together. I personally stay away from locticians. They always seem to tell their clients how to do their hair. Part of the fun and personal achievement is managing your own hair and it turns out unique in it's own way rather than how a stylist thinks it should look. Not to mention they can be expensive.

Because I wanted them thick badly but when she said the size I have to start off with, and I didn't say anything else. And I started my locs last year October 11th,and telling me to come every 2 to 3 weeks to get them retwisted. To me that's to often,so I go a little longer because when I had another set of locs before this,they were getting twisted to often,they thin at the roots,and starting popping out. I'm not trying to experience that again. Also when I come those 2 to 3 weeks she charge me $70,only a dry wash,not a regular shampoo wash,and so my scalp get clean with sea breeze. And also I don't get any styles,and they just hang down. So you right it can be expensive, but it's her rules,regulations,shop,and I respect that. But during quarantine I been washing my own hair,detox my scalp once,and retwisted them. I look at tutorial videos on TH-cam,watch,and learn from them. And since the conovirus break with everything being close Friday was my second time doing it on my own. I'm very proud of myself, and you do what you got to do. When I go out grocery shopping or to pay bills individuals give me compliments. But I try my best.

Your hair is beautiful. Be very careful with the products, even oils. Especially with thicker locs, assume anything you put in your locs will stay in them. You seem to already know wax itself isn't good.. but truthfully as they mature, product use of any kind can lead to build-up because they get trapped in the inner matrix of the locs themselves.
I use a mix of castor and jojoba oil to retwist my hair because castor oil is a thicker oil and actually keeps my retwist pretty well (I only retwist every 2 months and hav very thick hair) mayb try that, or even just castor oil or a mixture of it and ur favorite other oil. Im not a pro or anything but Iv seen what build up does to locs and gel is often a leading cause, ur locs r so beautiful I would hate to see that happen to you. U just hav to come to the realization that ur retwist doesnt need to look "perfect" to be beautiful; health over asthetics always 😊

My hair is the same with gel (aloe Vera, Taliyah Waajid tight hold) it just doesn’t hold or causes build-up. I tried this mixture I saw online: coconut oil, honey, and I added aloe Vera to break up the honey more. And it held my retwist amazingly! It looked like a pro did my hair ! It’s natural and doesn’t cause buildup so maybe you could try that
have you tried using oils for your retwist? I've also heard aloe vera gel straight from the plant can be great for getting hold/shine but avoiding buildup!

Try making flaxseed gel! It’s super easy and the hold is amazing!!!!! AND it’s all natural! Just flaxseed and water! Boil it and you have a great hold for your hair that will wash right out! I think it will work much better for you than the wax! I had to cut off my previous set of locs bc of the buildup from “loc wax” trust me! It weighs your hair down and eventually will make your hair hard and heavy! 😫
I love those Locs. I made mine thin but then I realized they were so many, now I'm retwisting holding them two to three strands. I'm not yet there but hopefully it will be soon. I love your Locs.

I haven’t used many product before. I’ve only tried gel and the the Jamaican locing gel and wax worked better so I’m just sticking to that for now
