Those are some of the longest silences I've ever heard in music. Like, I can't think of a single piece that uses empty space like that. Pretty damn interesting, if you ask me.
They're long silences alright, but I can hear the ambient noise of the Nexus in those spaces. The dialogue too, even though there's nothing there. Out of my speakers, this song would push that noise away, then subside again like the tide. It sounds fine to me on its own, but you only get the best of it when you're there playing the game.
The silences are so long there's actually nearly twice as much silence as there is music. For most of the piece it goes 1 measure of music followed by 2 measures of silence, repeated.
@@Tulanir1 same for the character creation theme, except that one even with how similar it is to this was actually composed to be heard on it's own and has background sounds on the 2 silence measures, yet that is the one that didn't make it onto the ost disc... Weird.
you have no idea how hard I laughed when I listened to the new dirty colossus theme and heard ANOTHER choir. the new music's fine, on its own there's nothing wrong with it but DAMN does it miss the point.
I can see what they were trying to do, but it comes off as though the composer's philosophy was: "If there's a second of silence, put some AHHHHHH-ing there and it'll be epic."
@@suedonnym It seems like the composer did not care or understand what made the old tracks so fitting, good and memorable. He probably wanted to put his own spin on them but got so carried away in the process of trying to make them sound different, that now most of his tracks sound almost nothing like the original and convey a completely different picture (Grand and epic instead of atmospheric, melancholic, simple etc). The new tracks are by no means bad, but they just don't feel or sound like demon's souls to me.
@@reaver5247 My thoughts exactly! I like a lot of the new tracks but they don't convey what they used to. The Tower Knight theme used to sound mocking and haughty with its laughter, then it crept into a slow, almost melancholic section, the laughter juxtaposed by the wailing chorus. The new one is just bloated and bombastic.
At the end in the remake this track lost its calm and resting feeling for a melodical tone, which is more for show. Don't get me wrong, is good; but it lacks of the intention of this piece (Which is a theme meant to rest and breath, just as the arragement is with its long silences: like a litteral deep breathing).
Real Human sculptors temple was top but to me it was the weakest hub world so far. Just didn't have the same atmosphere or interest as firelink, Majula, etc

The nexus, with all those blood ponds of players jumping off ledges for science, but creating the most depressing lobby ever. I was always amazed at how the interaction between players added even more depth to the atmosphere of the game instead of ruining it (in a "you're alone but you're not the only one" kind of way). This game was everything.
It wasn’t for science.. it was for PURE WHITE WORLD TENDENCY or PURE BLACK.. if you die as a phantom it doesn’t affect your world tendency and you needed certain tendency for trophies and equips
Here's how I feel. Demon's Souls has better, more intriguing stories. But Dark Souls has vastly better gameplay and the main story is more coherent. If Demon's Souls and Dark Souls were books, I'd enjoy Demon's Souls more. But since they are games, I prefer Dark Souls. It works better as a game. But really, all in all, I love them quite equally.
For me personally Demon's Souls gets by on the sheer strength of it's art direction and the atmosphere of each of its areas, also I find the minute to minute level design to be better than Dark Souls, and some of what it does like you said is infinitely more intriguing. But yeah, Dark souls has better gameplay and the interconnected world gives it a wholly different feeling to Demon's, though I wouldn't go so far as to say it's plot is more coherent. I think Dark souls spells out a lot more of its plot for the player oddly enough, whereas Demon's leaves much more up to interpretation. But yeah, I love them both XP
Dr Famine Strange because I feel the opposite. I think Demon's Souls has a way more coherent story that has some great stuff in it, but ultimately at the end of the day, I felt like there was more that could have been done with the story. Stylistically, I like Demon's Souls and Bloodborne more, but Demon's doesn't ever feel like it has a climax, probably due to how rushed and broken the game was. They didn't even have enough time to finish the last quarter of the game. Dark souls is extremely convoluted, but I feel it's story is stronger, mainly because I'm a sucker for how nihilistic it is.
The weak version of this song in the remake is the only reason I can't fully love the remake. Otherwise it would be perfect. They could have just included the original soundtrack and it would have been fine...

drewskyGALE To me, the backstep is way better. The dodge could benefit from some more clearly displayed s and most mechanics ( level up, upgrading, repairing ) were watered down. I respect you opinion, but to me, DkSII was truly disappointing. Still fun to play, though. It's tough love, I guess xD
PyramiDie Well to be completely honest if I'm going to compare all 3 games to each other then clearly Dark Souls II is the worst of the 3. What I miss the most from Demon's Souls were bosses like Flamelurker, False King and the Maneaters were brutal. Dark Souls II just took the approach of more is better. The bosses lacked substance. They thought "how could we make it harder" rather than how they could make the bosses more memorable. Flamelurker was a bitch without the flame shield and it was an epic fight.
What an absolutely beautiful song to an absolutely beautiful game. Games that are this hard and rewarding deserve to do well. Lets hope the sequel lives up to this.

The silent spaces are great. It's somehow like you can hear the room the music was recorded in. When you listen with headphones, you can actually hear some movements from the instruments, like little scratching noises. I really like that, it's very calming to me.

Unquestionably better than the remaster, I'm not going to be one of those guys who says everything in terms of music is worse in the remaster but this track in particular highlights what's missing in the remaster's soundtrack which is the principal of restraint.

***** Since you mentioned Firelink Shrine here were no real character arcs with the people in Firelink Shrine either, not interesting ones anyway. Most of them remained static, and their "arc" is "suddenly going hollow because." Petrus might be the exception, or Lautrec potentially if there was any time spent with his character but otherwise nah. I liked Laurentius but that's about it as far as Firelink squatters go. Patches too I guess but he doesn't appear in Firelink until well late into the game and he's just a carryover from Demon's Souls so whatever. There wasn't much to Firelink itself either besides being a tiny enclosed space that connected to other areas with some nice background scenery. If I ever went back there it was to either get to those other connected areas or to sell my stuff to Frampt or perhaps to dick around for a bit with some weapons and armor I had if I happened to be there, otherwise I'd just move on. I prefer Majula since it actually seems like a nice place I'd like to go back to. More spacious, undeniable scenery, and there are a number of useful NPCs that end up there. You have several vendors, two covenants, some loot to find, and a few questlines to complete. All four houses are actually worth going to, three for vendors (including one for covenant-related things and the other being the blacksmith of course), and another for item loot and for the questlines if you want to complete it (Cale of course). I would also say Maughlin definitely has an arc, and whether you think it makes any sense or not, Licia has too even if it is a sort of twist equivalent to the "NPC going hollow because." I guess she's supposed to be the game's Petrus though they leave it to the player to figure out exactly what she's done. And whether or not they have "arcs" the blacksmith has as much personality as DkS1's blacksmiths, and Shalquoir definitely has a lot of personality (I'd argue there's a subtle arc with her too, with more dialogue and growing seemingly more somber as you near your journey's end). And I'll take Saulden over DkS1's useless crestfallen asshole any day but that's just me. Not to hate on Dark Souls 1, but seeing the unwarranted drivel said against 2 that's just a Matthewmatosis echo chamber and the uncritical dick-riding 1 gets despite its numerous flaws, a lot of which 2 fixed, I think the proper record needs to be set straight and evened out here.
Every track is better in the original, for my taste anyways. The soundtrack is by far my biggest issue with the remake, it's a downgrade in every way. All the unique and interesting choices made for the original soundtrack have been discarded in favor of the most generic orchestra and choir combination you've ever heard. The instrumentation and melodies of the original soundtrack gave it an incredible atmosphere that is nowhere to be found in the remake.
@@MarkHogan994 As a first time listener to both, I can't really say that I prefer one over the other. I mean I get why everyone likes the old tracks, but I like the new ones too. And maybe it does ruin the original intent, but perhaps the new intent is just as valid? Like with maiden Astrea, in the original it was meant to show you your betrayal of a genuinely nice person who used their demon powers for good, but in the remake, it feels like it's meant to be a theme for Garl, her knight, who is her last line of defense. All in all, I won't judge your opinion, because it's as valid as my own, but for petes' sake people, just because it's different doesn't mean it's bad. Worse maybe, but not bad.

It's different for no reason, and it's worse overall, even if the new devs intended another aproach or a new interpretation of the scene, it was not their right to do so, and that's the problem with the whole remake, they really really missed the point of the original game, all the points in fact, they wanted to do their own thing it seems and sell it as what people loved.
Lunk firelink shrine which dark souls 1 was useless as a hub unless your talking firelink altar which is better but still nowhere near the levels of the nexus

Played DS1, DS2 and Bloodborne and just started Demon's Souls. All games have fantastic "hub" music (considering firelink shrine the hub of DS1), but this one is definitely the most calming one for me, such a nice song.
I've played ds1, 3 and BB and just started demons souls, not too far in but I just love this song, this and the hunters dream music are my favourites. Also is ds2 worth buying cause I've heard so many mixed reviews, I know this comment was a year ago but just wondering
DS2 is my least favorite one, but i think if you don't mind spending the money or can find it on sale, i still recommend playing it. It has it's good moments as well, and it's always nice to see how things can be done "wrong" in this series, makes you appreciate the other titles more. But that's just my opinion! You might end up loving it :D
MrToastedCrumpet dark souls 2 is worth a play through it has done thing better then the other parts of the series and other stuff is just a step in a different direction not bad a good game but just held down by the fact dark is in the title

I know that PS5 probably will be able to keep the remake nice and shit, but I have no desire to buy a PS just for this game. What I wanted to say is just that I would be happy if they decide to make PC-version of Demon's Souls as well, not just on PlayStation.

The song for when you first realize that you've been killed but aren't allowed to die. For this reason, way back then when I first played it, I came to the conclusion that Demon's Souls was one of the most horrifying predicaments for any video game protagonist to find themselves in. I'm hard pressed to think of actual horror games that bad.

This is still one of the most special pieces of video game music, to me. It's so relaxing and unsettling at the same time, and it evokes this equally mixed nostalgia for me. Over two years ago, I beat Bloodborne, my first From Software game. That very same month, I got into my car wreck and moved into my own apartment, closer to work so I wouldn't lose my job. I was alone and scared and had no money or transport, and Demon's Souls was the first game I played there. It was the only comfort I had. Sometimes even if I didn't feel like playing, I would leave the game running in the Nexus with this music on, just to keep me from feeling completely alone.
It's such a haunting yet simple tone. Something about Demon's Souls, from the atmosphere down to the logo font sticks with me in a way that no other game can.
Yeah, this tracks remake in particular is just noise. I'll say that most of the Remake tracks are fine on their own but in comparison with the OG OST they aren't as good i feel
My friend was playing this game when I stayed overnight and already fell asleep but through the sleep I could hear this song I got real mysterious feeling. It is so aesthetic, pure magic.
What easily describes this for me is, being outside when it is raining crazy and thundering (almost being struck) but finally making it inside a home with towels and coffee/tea. Warm after a dreadful experience.

The best hub world/safe haven track of any Soulsborne game so far. Hunters Dream comes a close second though. I just don't get why this had to be changed so radically in the remake. As an aside, I do love how two of the places you can find the Maiden when you return to the Nexus is over by Stockpile Thomas, (as if she's comforting/spending time with him) & waiting by whichever Archstone you've used, waiting for you to return. She might not have much dialogue but FromSoftware did a great job of endearing her to the player.
At 3:22 you can hear someone knocking/ brushing up against either their instrument or turning the page of sheet music in the background It's subtle but definitely noticeable especially with earbuds
God damn this takes me back. I remember getting back from school excited to play more only to spend a bit too much time in the Nexus and take a surprise nap. I really liked to just close my eyes and listen to this piece to decompress.

Demon's souls is one of the best video games I have played. look at this ost, this ost is so beautiful , calm with a touch of sorrow strange but you feel safe, the nexus is a masterpiece itself. a true fucking unique experience.
Entirely agree. It serves so well to put a great deal of contrast between the sense of safety in the Nexus and then immediately warping to, say, The Tower of Latria aswell. Its truly excellent.

As you walk out, to the lower levels...another statue is in parallel; he gently falls from his lofty height; his robes masking his human shape, giving him formless shape. Towards the Shrine of his own worship, now prison to humanity. He stays there, where no light shall ever shine. The statue stands unseen by most, now as a monument to times passing.
Can't believe this game is 14 years old. The From Soft experience still feels so fresh to me, and this gem was my very first. The thick atmosphere and the silent areas of Demon's Souls brings serenity to my soul.
Calling it now, with the release of the DS Remake, Silvagunner is going to upload just the first 7 seconds of this song and the rest is utter silence. And then we'll tear him limb from limb.
First time I played Demon's Souls I saw that message where the Witch would be sitting. At the time I didn't know because it was empty space. Then I laughed when I saw her sitting there later, of course the message was gone but I still remembered ahaha.

The nexus' athmosphere was one of the best in videogames. It makes you feel safe.

@@suedonnym It seems like the composer did not care or understand what made the old tracks so fitting, good and memorable. He probably wanted to put his own spin on them but got so carried away in the process of trying to make them sound different, that now most of his tracks sound almost nothing like the original and convey a completely different picture (Grand and epic instead of atmospheric, melancholic, simple etc). The new tracks are by no means bad, but they just don't feel or sound like demon's souls to me.
@@reaver5247 My thoughts exactly! I like a lot of the new tracks but they don't convey what they used to. The Tower Knight theme used to sound mocking and haughty with its laughter, then it crept into a slow, almost melancholic section, the laughter juxtaposed by the wailing chorus. The new one is just bloated and bombastic.

Don't get me wrong, is good; but it lacks of the intention of this piece (Which is a theme meant to rest and breath, just as the arragement is with its long silences: like a litteral deep breathing).

The nexus, with all those blood ponds of players jumping off ledges for science, but creating the most depressing lobby ever.
I was always amazed at how the interaction between players added even more depth to the atmosphere of the game instead of ruining it (in a "you're alone but you're not the only one" kind of way).
This game was everything.
It wasn’t for science.. it was for PURE WHITE WORLD TENDENCY or PURE BLACK.. if you die as a phantom it doesn’t affect your world tendency and you needed certain tendency for trophies and equips

Here's how I feel.
Demon's Souls has better, more intriguing stories.
But Dark Souls has vastly better gameplay and the main story is more coherent.
If Demon's Souls and Dark Souls were books, I'd enjoy Demon's Souls more.
But since they are games, I prefer Dark Souls. It works better as a game.
But really, all in all, I love them quite equally.

For me personally Demon's Souls gets by on the sheer strength of it's art direction and the atmosphere of each of its areas, also I find the minute to minute level design to be better than Dark Souls, and some of what it does like you said is infinitely more intriguing. But yeah, Dark souls has better gameplay and the interconnected world gives it a wholly different feeling to Demon's, though I wouldn't go so far as to say it's plot is more coherent. I think Dark souls spells out a lot more of its plot for the player oddly enough, whereas Demon's leaves much more up to interpretation.
But yeah, I love them both XP

Strange because I feel the opposite. I think Demon's Souls has a way more coherent story that has some great stuff in it, but ultimately at the end of the day, I felt like there was more that could have been done with the story. Stylistically, I like Demon's Souls and Bloodborne more, but Demon's doesn't ever feel like it has a climax, probably due to how rushed and broken the game was. They didn't even have enough time to finish the last quarter of the game.
Dark souls is extremely convoluted, but I feel it's story is stronger, mainly because I'm a sucker for how nihilistic it is.

As someone who prefers Dark Souls, I can honestly say The Nexus beat Firelink Shrine by infinity. Firelink can't even begin to compare. =')

PyramiDie Well to be completely honest if I'm going to compare all 3 games to each other then clearly Dark Souls II is the worst of the 3. What I miss the most from Demon's Souls were bosses like Flamelurker, False King and the Maneaters were brutal. Dark Souls II just took the approach of more is better. The bosses lacked substance. They thought "how could we make it harder" rather than how they could make the bosses more memorable. Flamelurker was a bitch without the flame shield and it was an epic fight.
What an absolutely beautiful song to an absolutely beautiful game. Games that are this hard and rewarding deserve to do well. Lets hope the sequel lives up to this.

The silent spaces are great. It's somehow like you can hear the room the music was recorded in. When you listen with headphones, you can actually hear some movements from the instruments, like little scratching noises. I really like that, it's very calming to me.

I am being honest I like some of the new material but just not most of it. Which is why the new soundtrack is so disappointing imo they had the tools to make something great but squandered it by not reading the room. It gets so bad in some spots though that I don't understand how blue point could have been anymore tone deaf like with dragon god, I laughed out loud when I first heard the remake of dragon God's song.
The only good remade tracks in the remake has to be the main theme and Adjudicator (which is the ONLY boss they followed the original melody for)

***** Since you mentioned Firelink Shrine here were no real character arcs with the people in Firelink Shrine either, not interesting ones anyway. Most of them remained static, and their "arc" is "suddenly going hollow because." Petrus might be the exception, or Lautrec potentially if there was any time spent with his character but otherwise nah. I liked Laurentius but that's about it as far as Firelink squatters go. Patches too I guess but he doesn't appear in Firelink until well late into the game and he's just a carryover from Demon's Souls so whatever. There wasn't much to Firelink itself either besides being a tiny enclosed space that connected to other areas with some nice background scenery. If I ever went back there it was to either get to those other connected areas or to sell my stuff to Frampt or perhaps to dick around for a bit with some weapons and armor I had if I happened to be there, otherwise I'd just move on.
I prefer Majula since it actually seems like a nice place I'd like to go back to. More spacious, undeniable scenery, and there are a number of useful NPCs that end up there. You have several vendors, two covenants, some loot to find, and a few questlines to complete. All four houses are actually worth going to, three for vendors (including one for covenant-related things and the other being the blacksmith of course), and another for item loot and for the questlines if you want to complete it (Cale of course).
I would also say Maughlin definitely has an arc, and whether you think it makes any sense or not, Licia has too even if it is a sort of twist equivalent to the "NPC going hollow because." I guess she's supposed to be the game's Petrus though they leave it to the player to figure out exactly what she's done. And whether or not they have "arcs" the blacksmith has as much personality as DkS1's blacksmiths, and Shalquoir definitely has a lot of personality (I'd argue there's a subtle arc with her too, with more dialogue and growing seemingly more somber as you near your journey's end). And I'll take Saulden over DkS1's useless crestfallen asshole any day but that's just me.
Not to hate on Dark Souls 1, but seeing the unwarranted drivel said against 2 that's just a Matthewmatosis echo chamber and the uncritical dick-riding 1 gets despite its numerous flaws, a lot of which 2 fixed, I think the proper record needs to be set straight and evened out here.

Every track is better in the original, for my taste anyways. The soundtrack is by far my biggest issue with the remake, it's a downgrade in every way. All the unique and interesting choices made for the original soundtrack have been discarded in favor of the most generic orchestra and choir combination you've ever heard. The instrumentation and melodies of the original soundtrack gave it an incredible atmosphere that is nowhere to be found in the remake.
@@MarkHogan994 As a first time listener to both, I can't really say that I prefer one over the other. I mean I get why everyone likes the old tracks, but I like the new ones too. And maybe it does ruin the original intent, but perhaps the new intent is just as valid? Like with maiden Astrea, in the original it was meant to show you your betrayal of a genuinely nice person who used their demon powers for good, but in the remake, it feels like it's meant to be a theme for Garl, her knight, who is her last line of defense.
All in all, I won't judge your opinion, because it's as valid as my own, but for petes' sake people, just because it's different doesn't mean it's bad. Worse maybe, but not bad.

Played DS1, DS2 and Bloodborne and just started Demon's Souls. All games have fantastic "hub" music (considering firelink shrine the hub of DS1), but this one is definitely the most calming one for me, such a nice song.
I've played ds1, 3 and BB and just started demons souls, not too far in but I just love this song, this and the hunters dream music are my favourites.

DS2 is my least favorite one, but i think if you don't mind spending the money or can find it on sale, i still recommend playing it. For this reason, way back then when I first played it, I came to the conclusion that Demon's Souls was one of the most horrifying predicaments for any video game protagonist to find themselves in. This is still one of the most special pieces of video game music, to me. It's so relaxing and unsettling at the same time, and it evokes this equally mixed nostalgia for me. Over two years ago, I beat Bloodborne, my first From Software game. That very same month, I got into my car wreck and moved into my own apartment, closer to work so I wouldn't lose my job. I was alone and scared and had no money or transport, and Demon's Souls was the first game I played there. It was the only comfort I had. Sometimes even if I didn't feel like playing, I would leave the game running in the Nexus with this music on, just to keep me from feeling completely alone.

My friend was playing this game when I stayed overnight and already fell asleep but through the sleep I could hear this song I got real mysterious feeling. It is so aesthetic, pure magic.
What easily describes this for me is, being outside when it is raining crazy and thundering (almost being struck) but finally making it inside a home with towels and coffee/tea. Warm after a dreadful experience.

As an aside, I do love how two of the places you can find the Maiden when you return to the Nexus is over by Stockpile Thomas, (as if she's comforting/spending time with him) & waiting by whichever Archstone you've used, waiting for you to return. She might not have much dialogue but FromSoftware did a great job of endearing her to the player.

Towards the Shrine of his own worship, now prison to humanity. He stays there, where no light shall ever shine. The statue stands unseen by most, now as a monument to times passing.
Can't believe this game is 14 years old. The From Soft experience still feels so fresh to me, and this gem was my very first. The thick atmosphere and the silent areas of Demon's Souls brings serenity to my soul.

First time I played Demon's Souls I saw that message where the Witch would be sitting. At the time I didn't know because it was empty space. Then I laughed when I saw her sitting there later, of course the message was gone but I still remembered ahaha.
