  • Niki Lauda presents many images to race fans the world over.He is The Man Who Came Back From The Dead, following his astonishing recovery from the fiery accident in the German Grand Prix of 1976 that so nearly killed him.
    He is a triple World Champion. The man who advised Ferrari in his retirement. The man who quit racing to start his own airline, and came back to win again.
    Lauda is all of these men, and more.

    Niki Lauda is one of the most analytical and cagey drivers ever. His honest and straightforward answers during interviews are always fun to hear, and in my mind, he's among the greatest F1 drivers of all time.

      Bill Dumas Definitely my favorite. His honesty is refreshing.

    • @mikew7984
      @mikew7984 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But we know "analytical" is DOMINATED by Ayrton Senna; Lauda is (2nd) up that Ladder.
      Timeline would had been so interesting with: Senna, Lauda, Hunt, Scheckter, and Schumacher ---- all out during the same seasons. Challenging their MINDSETS against each other. (may any other have shared the same emotions, that Schumacher was found to have?)

    • @FEARYOYOYO
      @FEARYOYOYO 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikew7984 Exactly, he was the only driver that could keep up with Senna during the Mercedes race. Well maybe not keeping up but there was a gap between him and the rest of the drivers. So definitely one of the greatest.

    I remember reading a great story about Lauda from when he was at Ferrari. He couldn't speak Italian, and he couldn't get the team's engineers to make the changes to the cars that he wanted made. He actually learned Italian so he could speak directly to Enzo Ferrari, who then ordered the team to make any changes Lauda asked for. Lauda drove the car to the championship.

    Luca Cordero di Montezemolo in an interview told that Lauda, at Ferrari, was nicknamed "golden ass" because with his back he felt all the vibrations of the car. Sometimes, in not important tests, the mechanics, to make a joke, while he took a break away, only slightly changed a few details of the set-up. Although the change was minimal, almost imperceptible, Lauda, as Lauda drowe again the car just after a lap, came back to the box and asked the chief of the mechanics "did you change something?"

    I have been watching F1 since the late 60's. I think only people who have actually sat in an F1 car and tried to get it out of first, then around a track, have any idea how difficult it is to just drive them. Let alone race them. All the drivers deserve props. Can you imagine competing on the Nurburgring on a dry track, et alone a wet one?

    We all have our favorites, usually from our younger days. Enzo Ferrari and Ferdinand Porsche thought Tazio Nuvalari was the best ever. Enzo lived long enough to see all these guys race. Even though Clark will always be my favorite, I have a hard time disagreeing with Ferrari. But search TH-cam for Schumacher racing go karts and you will see an absolute master tactician who doesn't just pass opponents but does so in a manner that puts his pursuer at a disadvantage.

    No, I am a Yank. I hate lists, but it is a start. Yes, you listed other great drivers. I think Andretti and others who were successful in F1, Indy and Sportscars are a special breed. I like Derek Bell a lot. An excellent driver, a good team player and most of all a gentleman. I think time will bring Schumi up the list. Graham was a great character, but a bit hard on his cars. Rally drivers deserve a lot of respect, too.

  • @Phantom096
    @Phantom096 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Did not think about that. Forget the F1 tracks and lets bring Vettel and his favorite RB to LeMans. I was looking at the LeMans layout it would be close. On the straights the LeMans spaceship with its top speed could get the advantage but on the corners the F1 could have the advantage. They should set it up for the fans it would be interesting to see the out come.

    Very true. These cars are hard to drive then and now but for the most part these drivers are in a go kart by the time they are 4 years old just to get to F1 some day. Racing in the rain is one of the reasons why I mostly watch F1 as far as racing goes. They say F1 cars are the fastest race cars in the world right now. Too bad it is not that popular in the USA but Bernie is trying.

    I LUV THIS GUY lauda & WALKER it's so hard to fully understand how different these guys (racers of the day) really are (to race in tubes of fuel). I raced moto & my sense of survival always meant that I would finish 2nd -3rd-4th ..17th

  • @MsLilyhorse
    @MsLilyhorse 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Prost is still under-rated. The more I learn about that era of racing the more I respect Prost. Especially when you consider those beasts he used to drive. How many of today's drivers cold handle those turbo monsters. Just a couple maybe.

  • @Phantom096
    @Phantom096 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very true! Prost is my second favorite driver of all time. His magic was his driving style for me. Very little electronics if any and 1200 hp of Turbo boosted engine yet he drove it as if a computer was driving the car. How do U do that. Till this day experts don't know how he did it. Ayrton knew this. In contrast everyone could see how hard Ayrton had to push all his cars.

    @philateliceun Schumi picked his red helmet for 2000 because Barrichello, who joined the team, had the same colours as Schumi had on his 90's helmet (white and red). Irvine had a red helmet in 1996, 97, 98 and 99. That's the official story :D

    Senna was the greatest naturally fast driver ever. But Prost knew how to preserve the car and the tires, and still be in the position to win. Prost had to deal with Senna, who was a terrible team mate. And Prost was disciplined, and put the time in on the track in testing, and in meetings with the technical people. If I owned a team I would want Prost as my #1 driver. He wasn't perfect, and Frenchies can be difficult, but what a driver. Senna learned a lot from him.

    I agree. Keep in mind that these are superficial F1 fans. They are still around today for the current F1. The true F1 fans that study the details of the sport will tell U that Prost was something special. U would think the die hard Ayrton Senna fans would do a little research on Prost and why Ayrton feared him so much.

    I just noticed something, look at 1:14, you see lauda's helmet? Doesn't it have exactly the same color as Michael Schumacer's helmet? Does anybody know if that is the reason why Schumacher chose that color? I never knew much about lauda and this is the first time I saw him with that helmet, maybe it is a common fact that shumi's helmet is a dedication to Lauda and I am just being incredibly ignorant :D

Are U Italian by any chance?

    I think Prost studied his craft, and therefor came to conclusions on how to handle the engine and the cars. Senna was pure, raw talent on a different level than anyone ever. 1) Senna 2) Fangio 3) Prost 4) Clark 5) Lauda 6) Stewart 7) Villenueve 8) Schumacher 9) Mansell 10) Assorted Italian drivers over the years.
